For most players, buy the standard digital FINAL FANTASY VII port on Nintendo Switch: it is the complete 1997 adventure with useful speed, encounter, and battle options. Choose the physical FINAL FANTASY VII & FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered Twin-Pack if you want a cartridge and also want FFVIII. Choose FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE only if you own Nintendo Switch 2 and specifically want a modern, action-focused retelling of the Midgar section plus the Yuffie episode.
The three Nintendo releases, compared
Nintendo and Square Enix use the Final Fantasy VII name for three substantially different products. The standard Switch download is the original 1997 role-playing game. The physical twin-pack places that original game and Final Fantasy VIII on one cartridge. REMAKE INTERGRADE is a separate Nintendo Switch 2 release that reimagines only the opening Midgar portion of the story.

What the standard digital port is
It is the original game, not the remake
Nintendo describes this product plainly: “This game is a port of the original FINAL FANTASY VII.” That means the game follows the complete 1997 campaign, with its original structure, turn-based Active Time Battle system, pre-rendered backgrounds, character models, and world map. It is not the modern action-RPG interpretation released as REMAKE INTERGRADE.

The original campaign is the right choice when your priority is seeing the whole story in one purchase. You are not buying only Midgar or an opening chapter; the port contains the complete original adventure, including the later locations and endgame. The visual presentation remains based on the 1997 design rather than the remake’s reconstructed environments.
The three convenience options
The Switch port adds three options intended to reduce friction without changing the underlying campaign:
- 3x speed: accelerates gameplay so routine movement, travel, and battles take less time.
- Random-encounter disabling: lets you turn off ordinary random battles when you want to explore or move through an area without interruptions.
- Enhanced-battle mode: provides a combat aid for players who want to get through fights more quickly or with less difficulty.
These features are optional. You can leave them off for a more traditional pace, use them selectively during exploration, or combine them when replaying sections you already know.

Nintendo’s regional listing gives this edition a March 26, 2019 release date and a 3.9 GB download size. The same listing names Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and US English language support. It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, so the digital edition works whether you play docked, prop the console on a table, or use it as a handheld.

The listing also marks the game as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Compatibility means the original Switch version can be played on the newer hardware; it does not turn the port into REMAKE INTERGRADE or add the remake’s modern combat and presentation.
What the physical twin-pack contains
One cartridge, two complete games
The documented cartridge option is the FINAL FANTASY VII & FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered Twin-Pack. Square Enix’s store description says both games are included on a single cartridge and that no download is required. This makes it materially different from buying the standard digital FFVII edition: you receive a physical package and a second full role-playing game rather than a standalone download.
Square Enix lists December 9, 2025 as the twin-pack’s release date and previously announced a European physical edition. Because physical distribution varies by region, verify that the cartridge’s regional version is compatible with your console and that the seller is offering the edition you intend to buy.

Who should choose it
- Cartridge collectors: you want a boxed game rather than an eShop download.
- Gift buyers: a physical package is easier to wrap and hand over than a digital code or account purchase.
- Players who also want FFVIII: the second game is part of the package, not a separate purchase.
- Resale-minded owners: a physical copy can be lent or resold subject to local market rules and the condition of the package.
The trade-off is equally clear: there is no documented standalone physical Switch cartridge containing only FFVII in this release lineup. If you do not want FFVIII, the twin-pack gives you more content than you asked for and may cost more than the digital port. Compare the current total price, stock, region, and return terms before ordering.

What REMAKE INTERGRADE changes
A partial remake on Nintendo Switch 2
Square Enix describes REMAKE INTERGRADE as “a partial remake of FINAL FANTASY VII, first released in 1997.” The phrase “partial remake” is the key buying distinction. This version retells the story through the party’s escape from Midgar; it does not cover the complete original campaign in one game.
It is built as a modern action RPG rather than a port of the 1997 mechanics. Expect real-time combat, redesigned environments, expanded scenes, and a substantially different presentation of the opening section. The package also includes FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, a side story centered on Yuffie.
The hardware requirement
REMAKE INTERGRADE is a Nintendo Switch 2 product. It is therefore the choice for owners of the newer console who specifically want the remake’s visual and mechanical approach. It is not the version to buy for an original Nintendo Switch if your goal is simply to play FFVII on the hardware you already own.
Buying REMAKE INTERGRADE first can also create an expectation problem: completing its Midgar section does not provide the rest of the original game’s journey. If you want the entire 1997 story immediately, choose the original port or the twin-pack instead.

Choose by the experience you want
You want the complete story in one game
Select the standard digital port. It is the only single-product choice here that delivers the full original FFVII adventure while also providing optional speed and encounter controls. It is the most direct route for a first playthrough of the 1997 game.
You want a cartridge and do not mind buying two games
Select the physical twin-pack. You get FFVII and FFVIII together on one cartridge with no download required according to the product listing. This is the practical physical choice, but it is not a cheaper or simpler substitute if you only want FFVII; the second game is part of the deal.
You want modern action combat and upgraded presentation
Select REMAKE INTERGRADE only on Nintendo Switch 2. Its strengths are the real-time action system, rebuilt Midgar environments, expanded scenes, and Yuffie episode. Its limitation is scope: it is a partial retelling, not the complete original campaign.
You own both a Switch and a Switch 2
Think of the products as complementary rather than interchangeable. The original port gives you the complete classic story and can run on either console. REMAKE INTERGRADE gives you a different, modern interpretation of the opening chapter, but requires Switch 2 and does not replace the original game’s later chapters.

Common buying mistakes
Mistaking the ordinary eShop listing for the remake
The regular FINAL FANTASY VII listing is the original-game port. The presence of the same title does not indicate remake content. Check whether the product name includes “REMAKE INTERGRADE” and whether the listing specifies Nintendo Switch 2 before paying.
Assuming a physical standalone cartridge exists
The documented physical option is the VII/VIII twin-pack. If a listing claims to be a cartridge containing only FFVII, inspect the publisher, region, included games, and download requirements carefully. The official twin-pack description specifically identifies one cartridge containing both games.
Assuming Switch 2 compatibility equals a Switch 2 upgrade
The original port’s Switch 2 compatibility allows it to run on the newer system. It does not add the remake’s action combat, Midgar reconstruction, or Yuffie content. Those belong to REMAKE INTERGRADE.

Physical availability and stock are not uniform worldwide. Before ordering the twin-pack, confirm the seller’s region, the package language information, whether the listed release is the December 9, 2025 edition, and whether the cartridge is actually included rather than a download code.
