Final Fantasy VII Rebirth explained: story, chapters, and its connection to the original game

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second standalone game in a planned three-part remake project. It begins after Cloud and his allies escape Midgar, follows their pursuit of Sephiroth across a much larger world, and reaches the Forgotten Capital. It does not retell all of the 1997 Final Fantasy VII, and it is not simply a scene-for-scene reproduction: familiar locations and story ideas remain, but their order, emphasis and presentation change.

The game is designed to work as its own release while continuing the narrative established in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The sections below explain its boundaries, adaptation choices, chapter structure, exploration, and spoiler-sensitive endpoint without inventing an unverified chapter list.

What Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the middle entry in a remake project planned as three separate games. The first game, Final Fantasy VII Remake, concentrated on Midgar. Rebirth starts once that portion of the journey is over and expands the setting to the regions beyond the city.

Calling it a sequel is only partly accurate. It is a narrative continuation of Remake, but both games belong to a larger reimagining of the 1997 original. Calling it a complete remake of the original is also inaccurate: the original game’s later events are being distributed across multiple releases, and Rebirth stops at a defined point rather than reaching the end of the entire story.

#1 Best Overall
Final Fantasy VII REMAKE INTERGRADE & REBIRTH Twin Pack (PlayStation 5)
  • Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
  • Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
  • Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
  • Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration

The developers describe each entry as a separately balanced game. Character levels and abilities do not carry over from one installment to the next, so Rebirth is built to provide its own progression rather than requiring a completed save file from Remake. Narrative continuity remains important, but the games are intended to stand on their own as individual experiences.

Where Rebirth’s story starts and ends

Starting point: the escape from Midgar

The opening follows the party after its escape from Midgar. Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XIII are no longer confined to the industrial city; the central objective becomes following Sephiroth’s trail through the wider world. Director Naoki Hamaguchi described that objective as tracking Sephiroth “across the expansive world” after the team leaves Midgar.

That change in scale is the defining structural move from Remake to Rebirth. Midgar’s dense urban chapters give way to roads, wilderness, settlements and distinct regional environments. The party’s movement is not merely a sequence of cut-scenes between towns. Travel, investigation and optional activities are built into the way the story unfolds.

Endpoint: the Forgotten Capital

The journey extends to the Forgotten Capital, the major endpoint identified by the developers. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura has said that the locations depicted reach that destination, where the story’s most consequential fate awaits. Producer Yoshinori Kitase likewise described the game as beginning after the escape from Midgar and continuing through the Forgotten Capital.

This endpoint is important because it defines the game’s scope without implying that Rebirth covers the complete 1997 plot. Wutai is not part of this game’s route; Nomura said it is being held for the next installment. The route also does not reproduce the original game’s geography in exactly the same order.

How Rebirth compares with the 1997 original

The safest way to understand the adaptation is to separate what is retained from how it is rearranged and expanded. The remake project preserves recognizable story ingredients, but the developers have deliberately avoided an unchanged retelling.

Comparison point 1997 Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Story span The original continues through the full game, including events beyond the Forgotten Capital. The second remake installment begins after Midgar and ends at the Forgotten Capital.
Location order Uses the original game’s established progression. Retains many landmarks but changes the order of some locations.
Wutai Appears as part of the original adventure. Deferred to the next remake installment, according to the developers.
Adaptation method The 1997 release presents its own linear-era interpretation of the story. Keeps most original elements while adding new scenes and new story devices.
Sephiroth’s role Important to the wider plot, with his presence developing across the original’s progression. Given a more driving presence in the portion of the journey covered by this game.
Exploration World-map travel and optional activities follow the design conventions of the original PlayStation era. Large regions, region-specific chocobos and extensive optional content are central to the experience.

This comparison explains why neither “faithful remake” nor “completely new story” is sufficient. The recognizable route, characters and dramatic landmarks remain, while sequencing and added material create room for surprises.

What the journey looks like without an invented chapter list

The official interviews used to describe the game’s scope do not establish a complete, verified list of chapter names. They identify the opening and endpoint, discuss the changed location order and explain the exploration structure, but they do not provide a definitive chapter-by-chapter itinerary. Any list presented as the official sequence would therefore need a separate authoritative source.

Readers can understand the progression through broad narrative stages instead:

  1. Leaving Midgar: the party begins the game outside the city and establishes the pursuit of Sephiroth as its main objective.
  2. Crossing the wider world: the group travels through multiple regions, each with its own environment, traversal options, settlements and side stories.
  3. Following Sephiroth’s trail: the main route links the party’s movement to the investigation of his plans and to the wider mysteries introduced or expanded by the remake project.
  4. Reaching the Forgotten Capital: the game arrives at the location named by the developers as its endpoint, bringing the covered portion of the story to its most consequential turn.

This approach is more accurate than assigning unverified names or claiming that the game follows the original’s itinerary exactly. It also reflects how the developers describe the experience: a journey through varied regions rather than a short chain of urban missions.

Why exploration and side content matter

Rebirth is structured around travel as much as around its critical path. Hamaguchi said the team designed the game around moving through different regions while following Sephiroth’s trail. Region-specific chocobos support that design by giving the party ways to navigate terrain and discover places that are not on the direct story route.

Optional content is not a token collection of diversions. Hamaguchi described its volume as “nearly double” the main-quest content. That is a developer comparison of the amount of material, not a promise that optional play will take precisely twice as many hours as the main story. It also does not mean every player will see the same amount: completion-focused players will spend far more time in regional activities than players who stay on the critical path.

The game allows players to return to regions after the main quest has moved on. That makes exploration a revisitable layer rather than a one-time checklist. A practical way to approach it is to complete enough local activities to understand each area, continue the story when ready, and return later if a traversal ability or unfinished objective makes a location more useful to revisit.

How the remake changes the original’s presentation

Preserved landmarks, expanded scenes

Kitase describes the adaptation goal as retaining most elements from the original while avoiding a straightforward recreation. Familiar places and story beats provide continuity for returning players, but additional scenes and altered transitions give characters and conflicts more room than they had in the 1997 format.

That expansion affects pacing. A location that functioned as a short stop in the original can become a larger explorable region, while relationships and character reactions can receive scenes that did not exist in the earlier game. The result is not a claim that every original moment has been replaced; it is a different distribution of attention across the same broad journey.

The Whispers and uncertainty

The Whispers are one of the clearest examples of newly introduced material. Kitase called them a new element added to “shake up” the storyline and create anticipation about where events were heading. Their presence means players familiar with the 1997 game cannot assume that every future beat will occur exactly as remembered.

The developers’ comments establish the Whispers as a deliberate storytelling device. They do not, by themselves, prove any particular fan theory about alternate timelines, parallel worlds or a predetermined replacement ending. Those interpretations belong to analysis and speculation, not to the basic factual explanation of what the team said it was trying to accomplish.

Character emphasis, especially Sephiroth and Aerith

Sephiroth as a more immediate force

Kitase says Sephiroth has a more central, driving presence in the portion of the story covered by Rebirth than he did in the equivalent stretch of the original. The pursuit is therefore not just a distant reference to a villain from Cloud’s past. His trail shapes where the party goes and why the group continues into unfamiliar regions.

This emphasis changes the rhythm of the adventure. Exploration and optional activities broaden the world, but the main route repeatedly returns to the question of where Sephiroth has gone and what his movements mean for Cloud and the others.

Aerith’s fate as a guarded theme

The Forgotten Capital gives Aerith’s fate a central place in the game’s dramatic build-up. Kitase identified that fate as an important theme in the interview while declining to reveal more. That restraint matters: the official comments support treating it as a major narrative concern, but they do not authorize a single definitive explanation of every final scene or its implications.

Spoilers: what the Forgotten Capital endpoint means

The following section discusses the game’s spoiler-sensitive endpoint.

Reaching the Forgotten Capital places the party at the story location associated with one of Final Fantasy VII‘s most consequential events. In Rebirth, that destination is also where the remake project can most visibly diverge from a player’s memory of the 1997 game. The Whispers, added scenes and changed sequencing have already established that familiarity does not guarantee an identical outcome.

The responsible conclusion is narrower than many fan theories: the game deliberately asks players to question how the remembered story will unfold, and Aerith’s fate is a major part of that question. The available developer statements do not support reducing the ending to one confirmed timeline explanation. Players seeking an interpretation should distinguish what the game depicts from what its symbolism or alternate possibilities might suggest.

Is Rebirth a sequel to Remake?

Yes, in narrative order: Rebirth continues after the events of Remake and begins with the party outside Midgar. It is also the second installment of a remake project, so “sequel” alone can be misleading. The game’s purpose is to continue a reimagined version of the original Final Fantasy VII, not to launch an unrelated follow-up story.

Each entry is balanced as a standalone release. Levels and abilities do not transfer between games, which lets a new player begin Rebirth as its own role-playing game while preserving the larger narrative connection for returning players.

Is Rebirth the whole original Final Fantasy VII story?

No. It covers the journey from the escape from Midgar to the Forgotten Capital. Wutai is reserved for the next installment, and the remake project is planned as three standalone games. The original game’s events beyond that point are therefore outside Rebirth‘s scope.

Where to check editions and availability

Square Enix’s official product information lists physical and digital editions, while the PlayStation Store lists the game for purchase. Edition names, platforms, prices and stock can vary by country and can change after launch, so check the official store page for the territory and platform you intend to use. Those commercial details are separate from the story scope: buying any edition does not turn Rebirth into the complete original-game remake.
