Spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Episode INTERmission and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth follow. The remake project has reached the end of its second chapter: Remake retells and radically expands Midgar, while Rebirth follows the survivors across the wider world and ends at the Forgotten Capital. Aerith’s apparent death, Cloud’s conflicting perceptions, Zack Fair’s surviving timeline and the defeat of the Whispers leave the final chapter deliberately unresolved. Square Enix has announced that the third game, officially titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is planned for spring 2027. This recap explains what happened, what changed from the 1997 story, and what the final game must answer.
What is the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy?
Square Enix is retelling the 1997 Final Fantasy VII as three standalone games. Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first entry and concentrates on the party’s escape from Midgar, greatly expanding that portion of the original. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second entry, taking the characters through the world outside Midgar and culminating at the Forgotten Capital. The announced third game, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is intended to complete the reimagining.

This is not a scene-for-scene remake. The new trilogy keeps familiar characters, locations and conflicts but introduces the Whispers, alternate outcomes and timeline imagery that make the future different from the 1997 game. The result is a story that can echo the original while asking whether its most painful events are fixed.
The original game has sold more than 15.7 million copies worldwide, according to Square Enix’s 2026 figure. The trilogy uses that established story as its foundation, but each release is written to function as a substantial standalone chapter.

What happens in Final Fantasy VII Remake?
Remake begins in Midgar, a vast city powered by mako extraction. Shinra Electric Power Company draws mako from the Planet to generate energy, and the environmental cost drives Avalanche’s resistance. Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER operative now working as a mercenary, accepts Barret Wallace’s job to help bomb Mako Reactor 1.
Cloud joins Avalanche
The reactor mission introduces Cloud’s combat partnership with Barret and the ideological conflict at the center of the game. Cloud treats the operation as paid work; Barret sees it as a necessary strike against Shinra’s exploitation of the Planet. The bombing succeeds, but the destruction and casualties immediately show that Avalanche’s cause is not morally simple.

Their meeting draws him into another part of the city and eventually reconnects him with Tifa Lockhart, his childhood friend and a member of Avalanche. Tifa, Barret and Aerith become the emotional core of the group while Cloud’s memories begin to show cracks.
The Sector 7 plate collapse
Shinra targets the Sector 7 plate to destroy Avalanche and make the disaster appear to be the group’s fault. Cloud, Tifa and Barret fight to stop the operation, but the plate collapses. The tragedy kills residents and members of Avalanche, including people close to the heroes, and convinces the survivors that Shinra cannot be opposed through limited sabotage alone.
The collapse also changes the party’s immediate goal. Aerith is taken to her home, where the group learns more about her background and the Cetra, the ancient people connected to the Planet. Shinra’s interest in Aerith is not merely political: the company wants to exploit her heritage and the knowledge it may provide.
Shinra’s experiments and the climb to headquarters
Cloud, Tifa and Barret rescue Aerith after Shinra captures her. Their route leads through the company’s headquarters, where President Shinra is killed. The apparent murder does not resolve the threat, because Sephiroth remains present as the larger danger and the party is framed by the chaos around the president’s death.

At headquarters, Professor Hojo’s research exposes the connection between Jenova and the experiments that shaped Cloud’s life. Cloud’s recollections of Nibelheim and his identity as a SOLDIER operative do not line up cleanly. The game establishes that his memories cannot be treated as a reliable record, a problem that becomes even more important in Rebirth.
The Whispers and the Arbiter of Fate
The Whispers are shadowy manifestations that intervene whenever events begin to diverge from the sequence associated with the original game. They protect what appears to be a predetermined history, forcing characters toward familiar outcomes and punishing deviations.
Outside Midgar, the party confronts the Whispers and defeats the Arbiter of Fate, the entity directing them. This victory is the trilogy’s decisive break with the 1997 timeline. Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith and Red XIII leave Midgar to pursue Sephiroth, but the future is no longer guaranteed to follow the same order or produce the same deaths.
Where does Episode INTERmission fit?
Episode INTERmission is a Yuffie-focused story included with the Intergrade version of Remake. It takes place during the Midgar events rather than after the party leaves the city. Wutai ninja Yuffie Kisaragi infiltrates Midgar to steal a powerful materia, and her mission intersects with Avalanche’s broader struggle against Shinra.

Yuffie’s operation ends with her leaving Midgar, setting up her later reunion with Cloud’s group. The episode gives her an independent motivation and establishes her as part of the remake project before she becomes a full member of the traveling party in Rebirth. Square Enix describes the story as an original Yuffie arc occurring during Remake; its announcement is available through the Final Fantasy Portal.
How does Rebirth begin after Remake?
Rebirth opens after the escape from Midgar. Cloud recounts the Nibelheim incident and his history with Sephiroth, presenting a flashback that becomes a major test of what he remembers correctly. The party reaches Kalm and then travels through a much larger world instead of remaining inside one city.

The route includes the Grasslands, Junon, Corel, Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon, with the Gold Saucer providing another major stop. The expanded geography changes the rhythm of the story: the characters are still hunting Sephiroth, but they are also confronting the Planet’s wider crisis, the Weapons, the Cetra legacy and the possibility that history can be changed.
The traveling party expands
Cloud, Tifa, Barret and Aerith remain together after Midgar, with Red XIII now traveling as a full member of the group. Yuffie joins after her separate Midgar mission, and Cait Sith enters the story around the Gold Saucer. The larger ensemble allows the game to explore competing views of Shinra, Wutai, the Planet and the risks of changing destiny.

The Nibelheim flashback appears to explain Cloud and Sephiroth’s shared past, but details do not fit together perfectly. Cloud’s confidence in his own history is repeatedly undermined, and Sephiroth exploits that uncertainty. The mystery is not simply whether Cloud is telling the truth; it is how memory, identity and outside influence have shaped the person traveling with the party.
What happens at the Forgotten Capital?
At the Forgotten Capital, Aerith prepares to pray for Holy, the defensive power associated with the Planet. Sephiroth descends as the party reaches her, and the scene deliberately presents more than one possible visual and emotional reality.
In the apparent physical outcome, Sephiroth kills Aerith. Cloud’s intervention, the white materia and the game’s overlapping timeline imagery make the moment difficult to interpret as a single, settled event. Cloud perceives a separate strand in which Aerith survives, while the rest of the party experiences the loss and begins to mourn her.
The game does not confirm that the alternate-world Aerith can return to the main party’s reality. It instead uses the contradiction to make Cloud’s perception part of the unresolved plot. The group continues toward the Northern Crater, carrying grief while Sephiroth advances his plan to summon Meteor and exploit the Planet’s Lifestream.

How are Remake and Rebirth different?
The two released games have different jobs within the trilogy. Remake establishes the characters, Midgar’s social conflict and the rules of the altered timeline. Rebirth broadens the setting, grows the party and turns the question of changing fate into an emotional crisis.
| Game | Primary setting | Narrative function | Party development | Ending point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII Remake | Midgar | Introduces Avalanche, Shinra, Sephiroth and the Whispers; ends the original timeline’s control | Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith and Red XIII | Escape from Midgar and pursuit of Sephiroth |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Kalm, the Grasslands, Junon, Corel, Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon, the Gold Saucer and the Forgotten Capital | Expands the world and tests whether the future can be changed | Adds Yuffie and Cait Sith to the traveling ensemble | Aerith’s apparent death and the journey toward the Northern Crater |
The spoiler burden also changes. Remake tells you that the 1997 sequence is no longer a fixed script; Rebirth shows the human cost of that uncertainty through Aerith, Cloud and the people around them.
What remains unresolved before Revelation?
The final game has several story questions to answer, but no complete plot synopsis has been published in the official announcement.
- Can the alternate Aerith strand affect the main reality? Cloud sees a version of events in which Aerith survives, but the game does not establish whether that world can interact with the one occupied by the rest of the party.
- How does Zack Fair’s timeline connect to Cloud’s? Zack’s survival in another strand is shown as part of the trilogy’s expanded reality. The precise relationship between his world, Cloud’s world and the Whispers remains unknown.
- What will Cloud remember? His fractured memories affect his understanding of Nibelheim, Sephiroth and his own identity. The final confrontation must resolve whether he can distinguish personal memory from implanted or borrowed experience.
- What are the Whispers, ultimately? Their defeat removed the force that enforced the old sequence, but the trilogy has not fully explained their origin, their relationship with Sephiroth or the Planet.
- Can the Planet survive Sephiroth’s plan? Meteor, the Lifestream, Holy and the Weapons remain tied to the endgame conflict. The party’s personal losses and the Planet’s survival now form one connected crisis.
When and where will the final game release?
Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the third and final entry, planned for simultaneous release in spring 2027. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox PC.

What should you play before the final game?
For the clearest story order, play Final Fantasy VII Remake, then Episode INTERmission, then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. INTERmission can be completed during or after Remake, but placing it between the two main games explains how Yuffie reaches the point where she joins Cloud’s group.

- Finish Remake. You need its Midgar events, the Whispers and the defeat of the Arbiter of Fate to understand why the sequel’s future is uncertain.
- Play Episode INTERmission. This supplies Yuffie’s Midgar mission and her motivation before the wider journey.
- Play Rebirth. Its opening assumes the escape from Midgar and its ending depends on the altered rules established in the first game.
- Keep the original 1997 game optional. It provides context for the trilogy’s echoes and deliberate changes, but the modern games establish their own continuity and do not require the original to be playable first.
What is the story’s position at the end of Rebirth?
Cloud and the surviving members of the party are traveling toward the Northern Crater after the Forgotten Capital tragedy. Aerith’s death is the apparent physical outcome, yet Cloud’s separate perception prevents the scene from being a simple confirmation that every version of her is gone. Sephiroth remains the active enemy, seeking Meteor and the Planet’s Lifestream, while the party must also understand the timelines created after the Whispers fell.
That is the exact handoff to Revelation: the characters have left the Midgar-focused opening behind, but neither Cloud’s identity nor the fate of Aerith, Zack and the Planet has reached a final answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII first?
No. The remake project establishes its own continuity, so the two modern games can be followed without completing the original. The 1997 release is useful as context for recognizing which scenes and outcomes the new trilogy is intentionally changing.
Can I play Rebirth without owning Remake?
Rebirth is the second standalone title, but its opening and major mysteries assume that you know the Midgar escape and the Whispers’ defeat. A recap can provide the facts, yet playing Remake gives the timeline break and character relationships their full dramatic context.
Is Aerith definitely alive in another timeline?
The game shows Cloud perceiving a strand in which Aerith survives, but it does not establish that this version can cross into the main party’s reality. Whether the strand is an alternate world, a perception shaped by Cloud’s fractured mind or something else is reserved for the unresolved story.
Has Square Enix announced an exact Revelation release date?
No. The official announcement gives spring 2027 and lists the release platforms, but it does not provide a specific day or a complete plot synopsis.
