FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE is the first installment in Square Enix’s remake project, telling an expanded version of events in and around Midgar. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is the second installment: it follows Cloud and the group after they leave the city and travel across the wider world. Start with Remake for the beginning of this story; choose Rebirth if you have finished it and want to continue.
How do the stories differ?
FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE: the Midgar story
Remake is the first standalone entry in Square Enix’s remake project. Its story follows the party’s escape from Midgar and gives the city’s events more room than they received in the original game. Square Enix describes it as an expanded treatment of this part of the story. Square Enix’s official FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE page provides the game’s project framing and story scope.
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: beyond Midgar
Rebirth is the project’s second game. Cloud and his companions leave Midgar and travel across the planet in pursuit of Sephiroth. It continues the remake project’s story rather than retelling the same Midgar section. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Portal Site describes it as the second entry and presents its wider-world premise.
Do you need to play Remake before Rebirth?
For the story in sequence, yes: play Remake first, then Rebirth. If you have completed Remake and want the next installment, Rebirth is the follow-up. That is an order-of-story recommendation, not a claim that one game is better. If you are deciding where to begin, choose Remake.

Rebirth platforms
In its current “Available Now” announcement, Square Enix lists FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH for PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC. Availability and editions can vary by market and storefront, so check the local listing for the platform and edition you want. The platform list is from Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Portal Site; older launch-era platform announcements may not reflect the current list.
Optional Streamlined Progression
Rebirth includes an optional Streamlined Progression feature. Square Enix says it can provide battle advantages including unlimited HP, MP, and ATB gauge, as well as 9,999 damage, letting players put more focus on the narrative. This is an optional assistance feature; it does not, by itself, establish a full comparison of the two games’ combat systems.

Do save data from Remake or INTERmission unlock anything?
Square Enix’s official FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH page documents in-game summon bonuses associated with save data from Remake and INTERmission. The page also specifies storage and account conditions. Check the instructions for your platform and account before expecting a bonus; save-data eligibility is not a blanket guarantee across every setup.

The official comparison information establishes the games’ story order and broad setting shift, but not a full mechanics-by-mechanics account of their gameplay. Choose based on where you are in the story, rather than assuming that the documented optional progression assists amount to a complete combat comparison.
