Choose by the kind of play you want: protecting a party, keeping it alive, fighting up close, or attacking from range. The ranking below is an editorial guide to approachable options—not an official Square Enix difficulty list or a measure of job strength. It reflects starting access, role responsibility, movement and positioning, and the early learning curve; your preference may put a different job first.
Square Enix’s job guide, marked updated for 7.5, describes the roles and current job roster but does not rank beginner difficulty. The recommendations for Warrior, White Mage, Dragoon, and Summoner also align with a recent beginner guide, which treats “easy” as a manageable entry point and a useful party role rather than low power.

How to read this beginner ranking
FFXIV begins with classes that develop into related jobs. The starting classes include Marauder, Conjurer, Lancer, and Arcanist, which lead to Warrior, White Mage, Dragoon, and Summoner respectively. Other classes and jobs become available as you progress; an early choice is not necessarily permanent. Square Enix’s free Starter Guide Series includes an episode on unlocking other classes at level 10, alongside videos about character creation, class quests, dungeons, and other basics.
Ranks here are a practical editorial order, not a measured difficulty scale. Tanks and healers carry direct survival responsibilities, while damage dealers learn different approaches to close-range fighting, ranged attacks, and casting. The best first job is the one whose responsibilities and combat feel you want to learn.

The 10 best FFXIV jobs for beginners, ranked
1. Warrior
Starting class: Marauder. Role: Tank.
Warrior is a strong first pick if you want to lead the party through encounters and learn tanking from an original starting class. Tanks have high HP and defensive training; Square Enix describes a tank as “the party’s shield.” That responsibility means paying attention to incoming danger and keeping the party’s survival in mind, so choose Warrior for the role—not because tanking has no learning curve.
2. White Mage
Starting class: Conjurer. Role: Healer.
White Mage is the straightforward entry point if your preferred contribution is restoring and supporting teammates. Healers mend wounded allies and can also mitigate damage, remove detrimental effects, and revive fallen party members. The role asks you to watch the group as well as your own actions, making it a good fit for players who enjoy support and responsibility.
3. Dragoon
Starting class: Lancer. Role: Melee damage dealer.
Dragoon gives a new player a direct route into close-range damage. Melee DPS rely on combos and careful positioning, so expect to engage enemies at close quarters rather than attack safely from afar. A recent beginner guide recommends Dragoon as an approachable DPS option; it is a sensible choice if that active, up-close style appeals to you.
Rank #2
- Access to all expansion content from Heavensward and Stormblood, unlocking additional jobs, areas, story quests and more ways to explore: flying, swimming and diving
- A flexible class system that allows players to switch freely between a variety of classes and jobs, including new additions red mage and samurai, and reach the new level cap of level 70
- All the hallmarks of the FINAL FANTASY franchise, including an engaging storyline, genre-leading graphics, and HD real time cut scenes.
- Robust gameplay features such as player-managed Free Companies, diverse party finder features to group up with other players with ease, and a variety of fun activities in the Gold Saucer area, all designed to accommodate a dynamic player community.
- Challenging trials, dungeons and raids for groups of up to 24, and exciting player-vs-player (PvP) content for groups of up to 72 players
4. Summoner
Starting class: Arcanist. Role: Magical ranged damage dealer.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSummoner is a ranged damage option for players drawn to magical attacks. Its Arcanist starting class also connects to Scholar, offering a related job path as you progress. Magical ranged jobs use arcane arts, and casting times can constrain movement; consider whether that rhythm suits you. A recent beginner guide includes Summoner among its approachable DPS recommendations.
5. Machinist
Starting class: Not an original starting class. Role: Physical ranged damage dealer.
Rank #3
- A new adventure awaits in Norvrandt
- New jobs, including gun breaker and dancer
- New playable races: Viera and Hrothgar
- Level cap increase from 70 to 80
- New cities to explore: The Crystarium and Eulmore
Machinist is an option to consider later if you want ranged damage without choosing a magical caster. Physical ranged DPS attack from a distance and can provide support, so their positioning demands differ from melee fighters. It is not one of the original starting classes, and this ranking does not establish a specific unlock level; check the current in-game job requirements before planning around it.
6. Bard
Starting class: Archer. Role: Physical ranged damage dealer.
Bard starts from Archer and suits players who want to contribute damage from range. The physical ranged role also brings support, while avoiding the close-in positioning associated with melee. That makes Bard worth considering if you want distance and party utility more than a tank’s defensive responsibility or a healer’s focus on allies’ health.
Rank #4
- Customer must have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to play Stormblood
- Increased level cap up to level 70
- New Jobs – Red Mage and Samurai
- New Beast Tribe and Primal
- New Alliance Raid
7. Paladin
Starting class: Gladiator. Role: Tank.
Paladin is another starting-class route into tanking. It belongs on a beginner shortlist if protecting the group sounds more appealing than dealing damage from the back line. Like any tank, it comes with direct responsibility for party survival; choose it for that role rather than assuming a tank job is automatically simpler than DPS.
8. Dancer
Starting class: Not an original starting class. Role: Physical ranged damage dealer.
Dancer offers the physical ranged style: attack from a distance and contribute support while dealing damage. Its role avoids the melee requirement to fight up close, though it is a later job rather than one of the original classes. The official roster confirms its role, but the sources do not establish a specific unlock level here.
Best Value
- Increased level cap from 50 to 60
- Dark Knight: Tank - Wields a two-handed greatsword and the power of darkness to deal damage to their foes
- Astrologian: Healer - Tap the power of the stars to cast potent healing magicks, while drawing energies from constellation-based divining cards to support your party
- Machinist: DPS - Deal damage from afar using a combination of firearms enhanced with various attachments, and mechanical turrets deployed on the battlefield
- Included in this expansion pack is a new race called The Au Ra, a new City-State - Ishgard, new Primals Bismarck and Ravana, and Flying Mounts
9. Red Mage
Starting class: Not an original starting class. Role: Magical ranged damage dealer.
Red Mage is a later magical ranged option if you want arcane attacks and are comfortable learning a job beyond the original starting classes. As with other magical ranged jobs, casting times affect movement. No specific unlock gate or comparative ease rating is established here, so treat it as a play-style suggestion rather than a guaranteed easiest pick.
10. Monk
Starting class: Pugilist. Role: Melee damage dealer.
Monk gives Pugilist players a route into close-range damage. It ranks lower for a first choice because melee play involves combos and careful positioning, a different set of demands from attacking at range. If you want to stay close to enemies and learn that style from a starting class, it remains a valid first path.

What not to pick as an ordinary starter job
Square Enix’s current 7.5 job guide also lists limited jobs: Beastmaster among melee jobs and Blue Mage among magical ranged jobs. They have a special limited-job status, so they should not be treated as ordinary beginner recommendations alongside the standard job paths above.
The job guide is the best place to confirm the current role roster and job information. For a broader introduction, Square Enix’s free Starter Guide Series covers early systems and progression, including unlocking other classes. Both resources are useful complements to choosing a role, not official rankings of job difficulty.
