Patch 7.4 changes Red Mage and Gunbreaker in different ways: Gunbreaker gets more cartridge capacity and charge-based access to Gnashing Fang, while Red Mage’s Manafication is reworked to grant different effects and extend the reach of its enchanted melee actions. Players in a Reddit discussion disagreed over whether those changes smooth out awkward burst windows or dilute the jobs’ distinct rhythms. The thread shows a debate, not a representative measure of player opinion.
What changed for Gunbreaker
Square Enix’s Patch 7.4 notes adjust Gunbreaker’s resources, cooldowns, and damage actions—not just its cartridge cap.

- Bloodfest: Its recast time drops from 120 seconds to 60 seconds. It adds three Powder Gauge charges, and the maximum number of cartridges rises to six.
- Gnashing Fang: It becomes a charged action with two charges, giving players more flexibility in when they execute it.
- Other burst costs and potencies: Double Down falls from 1,200 to 1,000 potency and now costs two cartridges instead of one. Potencies for the Gnashing Fang combo and Continuation actions are also reduced.
- Sonic Break: Both its direct potency and damage-over-time profile change.
The official Gunbreaker overview, reproduced in the player discussion, explains the intent behind the Bloodfest and Gnashing Fang adjustments. It says that spending Bloodfest during a burst could overflow cartridges, and that forced distance from an enemy could make Gnashing Fang’s recast a hindrance during burst phases. That stated rationale points to resource management and recovery from encounter downtime; the accompanying potency and cost changes mean the update also alters the damage sequence itself.
What changed for Red Mage
Red Mage’s changes center on Manafication and the enchanted melee sequence. The official Patch 7.4 notes list these adjustments:
#1 Best Overall
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
- Embolden: Its magic-damage increase for the user rises from 5% to 10%.
- Manafication: Its recast falls from 120 seconds to 110 seconds following the removal of Enhanced Manafication.
- Enchanted melee range: Manafication temporarily lets Enchanted Riposte, Enchanted Zwerchhau, and Enchanted Redoublement reach targets up to 25 yalms away.
- Manafication effects: It grants three stacks of Magicked Swordplay rather than six Manafication stacks, and now grants Prefulgence Ready directly.
- Vice of Thorns: Its potency rises from 900 to 950. The two Enhanced Manafication traits are removed.
The notes document what the ability now does, but they do not explain Square Enix’s specific reasoning for Red Mage’s new stack system, direct Prefulgence Ready grant, or temporary melee range. It is therefore possible to describe the mechanical effect without presenting a motive as fact.
Why players disagree about job identity
In the Patch 7.4 discussion on r/ffxiv, one commenter called the Red Mage changes “More class homogenization/simplification. This is removes the class identity of Red Mage and its melee phase.” Another pushed back, arguing that Red Mage still has melee phases and that the particular Manafication sequence was not essential to the job’s identity. Other comments welcomed a less awkward burst in some fights.

- Challenging trials, dungeons and raids for groups of up to 24, and exciting player-vs-player (PvP) content for groups of up to 72 players
Gunbreaker responses were similarly mixed. Some players were surprised by the six-cartridge cap and two Gnashing Fang charges; others saw them as ways to avoid cartridge overflow and retain burst execution after a forced disengagement. The thread’s quoted official explanation is useful context, but player reactions remain individual views. Its comments do not establish how the wider player base feels.

| Question | Gunbreaker | Red Mage |
|---|---|---|
| What is being adjusted? | Cartridge capacity, Bloodfest timing, Gnashing Fang charges, and several potency and cartridge-cost values. | Embolden’s self-buff, Manafication’s recast and effects, temporary enchanted-melee range, and Vice of Thorns potency. |
| What burst friction do the changes address? | The official overview cites cartridge overflow on Bloodfest and Gnashing Fang cooldown disruption when mechanics force the job away from its target. | The notes establish the new sequence and range, but do not state Square Enix’s rationale for these changes. |
| What is the identity debate? | Whether extra capacity and charges make burst easier to recover or change the feel of managing Gunbreaker’s burst. | Whether changing Manafication’s role and extending the melee actions’ reach softens a defining part of Red Mage’s melee phase. |
These are not the same kind of rework. Gunbreaker’s official explanation directly links two adjustments to specific execution problems, while Red Mage’s notes describe a changed ability package without explaining the design motivation. Whether either job’s distinctive rhythm has been diminished is an interpretation, not a mechanic stated in the patch notes.

Patch context
Patch 7.4, Into the Mist, was scheduled for release on December 16, 2025; the notes were updated December 23, 2025. The update also introduced the Arcadion Heavyweight tier, the Mistwake dungeon, the Hell on Rails trial, and broader system changes. The job adjustments are one part of a wider patch, but the identity discussion turns on how they affect each job’s burst sequence.
