Black, white, red and purple armor dyes are not dependable purchases from the Beauclair merchant. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine, you normally find a dye formula in loot, then craft the color with one dye solution and four additional ingredients. Bastoy Prison Ruins and Mont Crane Castle are sensible places to search for black and white formulas, but current evidence does not establish that either container always produces that color in every edition or save. The same caution applies to the documented red and purple locations. Once crafted, a dye can be applied to an eligible Witcher-gear piece and removed later with a purchased dye remover.
What must be installed before armor dyes appear?
Armor dyes are a Blood and Wine feature. They recolor individual pieces of Witcher gear; they are not a system for changing every ordinary armor set in the game. You also need access to Toussaint, because the dye merchant, the documented formula containers and the crafting ingredients are tied to that expansion’s content.

Check your edition and entitlement first
On September 29, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered includes both expansions even for owners who previously had only the base game. Its support guidance tells owners to install the current update and gives separate free-download instructions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you already own the game, check that entitlement and update path before buying Blood and Wine again.
A prospective player can also use an edition that explicitly includes the expansion. The publisher says the physical Nintendo Switch Complete Edition game card includes Blood and Wine, along with the rest of that edition’s content. Store listings and regional availability can change, so verify the package description for your platform before purchase.

Reach Toussaint
After the expansion is installed or unlocked, travel to Toussaint and enter the Beauclair area. The merchant near the Beauclair port and beach is the practical starting point for ordinary dyes, dye solution and dye remover. You do not need to find a special quest to make the black or white recipes once their formulas are in your alchemy inventory.
Can I buy black, white, red or purple dye in Beauclair?
Usually, no. Historical merchant-stock lists associate the Beauclair dye merchant with blue, brown, gray, green, orange, pink, turquoise and yellow. They do not list black, white, red or purple as dependable merchant colors. Stock can vary by edition, overhaul or mod, and a universal current price has not been established, so treat the merchant as a source of common colors and remover rather than a solution for the four sought-after colors.
What the merchant is still good for
- Buying ordinary-color dyes when the available stock includes them.
- Buying dye remover so a recolored piece can be returned to its default appearance.
- Purchasing or replenishing dye solution when you have the coin and the merchant offers it.
For black, white, red and purple, search for the formula first. A formula is the permanent recipe unlock; after learning it, you can craft additional batches whenever you have the listed ingredients.
Where can I find the black dye formula?
Search the skeleton or treasure container at Bastoy Prison Ruins in western Toussaint. Older location guides identify that site as the black-formula spot, making it the best first stop when you are following a map. Newer guidance warns that formula colors are not proven to be fixed to named containers, so Bastoy is a candidate search location, not a guaranteed black drop.
Route and search procedure
- Travel to the Bastoy Prison Ruins fast-travel point or approach the ruins from western Toussaint.
- Explore the prison remains and inspect the skeleton or treasure container associated with the older black-dye directions.
- Read any dye formula you obtain from the inventory. If it is a different color, continue through other documented formula containers rather than assuming the save is broken.
- Once the black formula is learned, gather the recipe ingredients and craft it in the alchemy menu.
Black dye recipe
Black requires 1 dye solution, 1 Nigredo, 1 Stammelford’s Dust, 1 coal and 1 crow’s eye. The dye solution is the shared base; the other four ingredients are the color-specific components. Ingredient names can differ slightly between historical guides and item databases, so use the spelling shown in your own game’s alchemy screen if it conflicts with an older list.

How do I get white armor dye?
Search the highest level of Mont Crane Castle. The documented target is a lockbox on a table beneath a wooden roof or awning. As with Bastoy, older guides associate this box with white, while more recent information treats it as a formula-search location rather than an unconditional reward.
Mont Crane search steps
- Enter Mont Crane Castle and work upward until you reach the uppermost accessible level.
- Look for the table under the wooden roof or awning and inspect the lockbox.
- Read the formula if it is white. If the container produces another formula, mark the location as searched and move to the other sites in the circuit below.
- Craft white after the formula is learned.
White dye recipe
The white formula uses 1 dye solution, 1 Albedo, 1 arenaria, 1 verbena and 1 mistletoe. These are consumed when you craft the dye, so check the alchemy quantity before travelling back to your armor chest.
Where are the red and purple formulas?
Red and purple also come from exploration rather than a dependable merchant purchase. Their documented locations are tied to a quest chest and a roadside camp, respectively, but neither location has a published guarantee that every edition and save will roll that exact color.
Purple: The Tufo Monster cellar
During The Tufo Monster contract, use the quest key to reach the basement or cellar and inspect the chest there. This is the commonly documented purple-formula candidate. If the chest contains another color, finish checking the wider formula circuit instead of repeatedly reloading under the assumption that a fixed purple reward must appear.
Red: the cave camp east of Dun Tynne Crossroads
Follow the road east from Dun Tynne Crossroads until you reach the cave camp. Search the box beside the bed. Guides identify this container as a red-formula candidate; the current evidence does not establish a universal fixed-color result.

Red and purple recipes
- Purple: 1 dye solution, 1 Hellebore petals, 1 pringrape, 1 wolfsbane and 1 grapes.
- Red: 1 dye solution, 1 Rubedo, 1 beggartick blossoms, 1 berbercane fruit and 1 cortinarius.
Keep the exact pluralization and spelling used by your edition’s item names. Some older databases use different spellings for plant and alchemical ingredients.
What other places should I search for dye formulas?
If Bastoy or Mont Crane does not produce the expected color, search the other documented containers. Treat this as a circuit for finding formulas, not a list of twelve guaranteed one-color rewards. The following examples come from older mapped guides and newer formula-location compilations.
- Arthach Palace: a bag behind a white tent is associated in older maps with turquoise.
- A Knight’s Tales: inspect the dresser in the hut visited during the quest; older guides associate it with gray.
- Fort Ussar: search the documented container associated with green.
- Northwest of Fox Hollow: inspect the skeleton near the den; older maps associate it with brown.
- Beauclair cemetery crypt: search the skeleton in the crypt; older guides associate it with yellow.
These sites are useful because they expand the number of containers you can check. They are not evidence that a particular color must spawn there in every platform edition, mod setup or save. If you are missing a color, inspect enemies, chests, bags and skeletons encountered during Toussaint exploration rather than stopping after one failed named location.
What are the recipes for every documented armor-dye color?

Your best route depends on whether you already know a formula and how much exploration you want to do. No published source establishes a drop percentage or a controlled comparison showing that one named chest is more reliable than another.

How do I apply a dye and remove it later?
After crafting a color, apply it from the equipment interface to an eligible Witcher-gear piece. The game presents the dye option on gear slots that support recoloring; ordinary armor that is not eligible will not accept the item.
- Open the equipment screen and select the Witcher-gear piece you want to recolor.
- Choose the dye command shown for that slot.
- Select the crafted color and confirm the change.
- To restore the default appearance, use a dye remover purchased from the Beauclair merchant and apply it through the same equipment interface.
Dye remover is purchased rather than crafted. Keep that distinction in mind when planning a long exploration session: the merchant is useful even when it cannot supply the rare color you are hunting.

Why did a documented chest give me the wrong color?
The most likely explanation is the loot behavior itself, not a broken quest. The available evidence does not establish the exact algorithm that assigns colors to formula containers for every edition and save, and newer guidance specifically warns against treating historical Bastoy or Mont Crane directions as fixed rewards.
- Confirm that Blood and Wine is installed and that you are searching the correct container, not a nearby generic chest.
- Read the formula you actually received; the container may still have supplied a valid dye formula.
- Search additional documented containers in Toussaint rather than repeatedly reloading one location.
- Check ingredient names in your own alchemy interface because older guides and current item databases can spell some components differently.
- If the dye option is missing on a piece of equipment, try an eligible Witcher-gear item; dyes are not universal armor cosmetics.
There is no reliable published black-versus-white drop rate to use for estimating how many chests you should open. Any guide that gives a precise percentage without a cited controlled source is adding certainty that has not been established.

- Verify access: update the game and confirm the expansion entitlement before spending money on another copy.
- Visit Beauclair: identify the merchant, buy remover if you expect to experiment, and note which ordinary colors are available in your edition.
