Firefox usually installs on Windows by downloading Mozilla’s installer in another browser, opening it, and approving the User Account Control prompt. On Windows 10 or 11, you can also install Firefox through Microsoft Store. The important exception is Windows S mode: Mozilla says Firefox currently cannot be installed from either Mozilla’s website or Microsoft Store while S mode is active. If the installer reports “The installation seems to be incomplete/corrupt,” check free space and disk health, then reinstall; a clean install may be necessary if ordinary reinstalling fails.
Use the exact error and your Windows edition to choose the right path below. A download that will not start, an installer that will not open, an organizational block, and a corrupt-installation message are different problems and should not be treated as one generic failure.

Identify where the process stops before changing anything. This prevents you from applying disk-repair steps to a download problem or trying the Microsoft Store when S mode is the actual blocker.
- Will not download: note which browser you used and any message shown before a file is saved.
- Downloads but will not open: record whether Windows displays a security warning, says the file is blocked, or does nothing.
- Starts and then fails: copy the complete installer error, including punctuation.
- Already had Firefox: determine whether the existing copy came from Mozilla’s website or Microsoft Store, because the two distributions use separate Firefox profiles.
- Windows edition: check whether the computer is in S mode. Mozilla identifies this as a specific installation restriction.
Do not bypass a company, school, or family-safety restriction on a managed computer. Ask the administrator to approve Firefox or provide the approved installation method.

How do I install Firefox with Mozilla’s official installer?
For a normal Windows installation, use another browser such as Microsoft Edge to obtain Firefox, then run the downloaded installer.
- Open your current browser and go to Mozilla’s official Firefox download page.
- Download the Windows installer. Mozilla says the installer automatically offers the best available Firefox version for that computer.
- Open the downloaded installer from your browser’s download list or your Downloads folder.
- If User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes, verify that the publisher is Mozilla and approve the prompt when you have permission to install software.
- If Windows displays an additional security warning, read it before choosing to run the file. Do not launch an installer whose source or publisher you cannot verify.
- Let setup finish, then start Firefox from the Start menu.
A standard installation approved with administrator credentials normally goes into Program Files and is available to all users. Mozilla also notes that if the installer is run without administrator approval, it may install into that user’s home directory and be available only to that user.
What if the downloaded file is not an administrator installer?
Do not assume that running the file as another user will fix a policy restriction. On a personal computer, sign in with an account allowed to install applications or ask the device owner to approve the User Account Control request. On a managed device, use the organization’s software portal or contact its administrator.
Can I install Firefox from Microsoft Store?
Yes, Mozilla documents a Microsoft Store route for eligible Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. Search Microsoft Store for Mozilla Firefox, select the official result, and choose Get. Store-installed Firefox receives updates through Microsoft Store rather than through the normal Mozilla installer process.
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Search for Mozilla Firefox and check that the listing is the official Mozilla application.
- Select Get and wait for Windows to download and install it.
- Launch Firefox from the Store page or Start menu.
The Store and Mozilla-download versions are separate distributions. Mozilla warns that they create separate Firefox profiles, so bookmarks, history, extensions, saved logins, and other data in one profile may not appear automatically in the other. If you switch routes, identify which installation contains your data before removing either copy.
Windows may also require you to set Firefox as the default browser again after a Store installation. Change that manually in Windows Settings if the default-browser choice did not carry over.

Why will Firefox not install in Windows S mode?
Windows S mode is a platform restriction, not a damaged Firefox installer. Mozilla says Firefox cannot currently be installed from Mozilla’s website while S mode is enabled, and Firefox installation from Microsoft Store is also disabled there.
To use Firefox, follow Microsoft’s current process for switching out of S mode, then retry the installation. The relevant control is presented in Windows Settings under activation or S-mode information; labels and navigation can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Switching out is a one-way change in normal Windows configuration, so confirm that you understand the consequence before selecting it.
Downloading the Store app does not solve this restriction. If the computer belongs to a school, employer, or child account, an administrator may control whether S mode can be changed.
How do I fix “The installation seems to be incomplete/corrupt”?
Mozilla’s exact message is: “The installation seems to be incomplete/corrupt. Please check your hardware and disk setup and/or re-install.” It can result from incomplete or corrupted Firefox files, disk errors, insufficient free space, or a hardware and disk configuration problem. The message alone does not identify which cause applies.

Open Windows storage settings and confirm that the drive receiving Firefox has available space. If the drive is nearly full, remove or move unneeded files, empty the Recycle Bin, and retry the installer. Leave enough room for Windows temporary files as well as the Firefox program.
2. Check the disk
Use Windows’ built-in drive error-checking tool on the destination drive. In File Explorer, open the drive’s properties, select the tools or error-checking area, and allow Windows to scan and repair errors when offered. Save work first and follow any restart request. A disk check that reports problems, repeated read/write errors, or a drive that disappears should be treated as a storage-health issue rather than a Firefox-only problem.

3. Uninstall the existing Firefox copy
Open Windows’ installed-apps or Apps & features list, select Firefox, and choose Uninstall. Restarting after removal can release files that were still in use. Keep your Firefox profile data if you may need bookmarks, passwords, history, or extensions later.
4. Download a fresh installer from Mozilla
After uninstalling, download a new installer in another browser and run it again. Do not reuse a partially downloaded file. If the same message returns, continue with the clean-install procedure rather than repeatedly launching the identical installer.

Open Windows Update, install available updates, restart when requested, and retry Firefox. Mozilla includes keeping Windows up to date in its guidance for this error because installer behavior can depend on the operating system’s current components.
When is a clean Firefox install necessary?
Use a clean install when ordinary uninstalling and reinstalling still produces the incomplete/corrupt message. A clean install removes the remaining Firefox program folder after uninstalling, restarts Windows, and then installs a fresh copy.
Before deleting anything, back up installation and profile folders that contain data you might need. The program folder and profile folder are different: removing the program files is intended to clear damaged application files, while deleting a profile can remove personal Firefox data. If you are unsure which folder is which, stop and obtain help rather than deleting folders at random.
- Uninstall Firefox from Windows’ installed-apps list.
- Close all Firefox processes and other open work.
- After uninstalling, locate the remaining Firefox program folder, commonly under Program Files or a per-user application directory, and remove only the leftover program files Mozilla’s instructions identify.
- Restart Windows. This clears file locks and completes removal.
- Download a fresh installer from Mozilla and run it with the required permissions.
- Restore or select the correct Firefox profile only after the new installation opens successfully.
If the clean install fails again, preserve the exact error text and the disk-check result. Repeated failures can indicate a failing drive, broader Windows corruption, or a policy restriction. Mozilla directs users with persistent problems to its desktop support forum.

Which Firefox installation route should I choose?
For a computer that is not in S mode, either route can provide Firefox. Choose based on who should manage updates and whether an existing profile matters.

Do not switch routes casually on a computer that already has Firefox data. Open the original installation first, confirm where its profile is stored, and plan how you will move or retain that data.
What should I do if the installer opens but Windows blocks it?
Capture the exact Windows message before trying another download. A security warning, an administrator-policy notice, and the incomplete/corrupt Firefox message point to different causes, and Mozilla’s disk guidance does not establish a fix for every block.
- Confirm the installer came from Mozilla’s official download page and was not renamed or altered.
- Check whether your Windows account is permitted to install applications.
- On a work or school computer, ask the administrator for the approved package or exception.
- If antivirus or endpoint protection identifies the file, follow the organization’s review process instead of disabling protection blindly.
- If the message names a network, proxy, or download failure, preserve that text and consult the relevant Mozilla or Windows support documentation.

How do I preserve Firefox data while fixing installation?

Uninstalling the application does not automatically mean that bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and extensions should be discarded, but a clean-install operation can become destructive if profile folders are removed accidentally.
- Record whether the current copy came from Mozilla or Microsoft Store.
- Open the working copy, if possible, and verify that important bookmarks and passwords are present.

Stop repeated installs when the drive check reports errors, Windows cannot maintain the destination drive, or a managed-device policy blocks the installer.
