A black screen during a Windows game is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The monitor may have lost its video signal while Windows and game audio continue, the graphics driver may have stopped responding, one game may conflict with software, or the entire PC may be overheating, unstable, or restarting. First identify which of those is happening. Then work from reversible checks—power and cables, the Windows graphics-driver reset, and display-mode switching—before changing drivers or hardware. The steps below separate a display-only failure from a system crash, a one-game problem from an all-games problem, and an update-related failure from a problem with no obvious trigger.
What exactly goes black when you play?
Watch the PC during the failure before pressing the power button. The detail that distinguishes a lost display signal from a full system crash determines which fixes are sensible.

| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Record before changing anything |
|---|---|---|
| The monitor says “No signal,” but fans, lights, or game audio continue. | The display path or graphics driver may have failed while Windows is still running. | Whether the keyboard responds, whether Ctrl+Alt+Delete opens a screen, and whether the monitor recovers by itself. |
| The picture is black but sound continues and shortcuts may still work. | The game or Windows compositor may be stuck in a display mode, or the driver may have timed out. | Whether switching windows, pressing Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, or waiting restores the image. |
| Windows freezes completely, the keyboard does nothing, or the PC must be held at the power button. | This is a system-stability problem as well as a display problem. Heat, an overclock, hardware, drivers, software conflicts, or power delivery can all be involved. | Temperatures if available, what was running, how long the game had been open, and any event, stop-code, or reliability message after reboot. |
| The computer restarts on its own or shows a stop code. | Windows or the hardware detected a broader failure. Treat the stop code and reboot timing as evidence rather than assuming the monitor or GPU is defective. | The exact stop-code text, whether the restart occurs only under 3D load, and whether it began after an update or hardware change. |
Also note the scope: one game or every game, desktop applications or games only, and whether the failure starts after a consistent amount of play. Intel recommends recording the symptoms and the activity that preceded them, then checking whether the failure can be reproduced. That record prevents random changes from hiding the cause.
What should I try before changing drivers or hardware?
Start with checks that cannot permanently alter Windows. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance uses these as first-line actions for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

- Confirm monitor power. Make sure the display is switched on, its power indicator is lit, and its input is set to the connector used by the PC. If the monitor has an input button, select the correct HDMI or DisplayPort input.
- Reseat the video cable. Turn off the monitor, unplug the cable at both ends, and reconnect it firmly. If the cable or connector is visibly damaged, stop using it. A laptop with a dock or adapter has additional connections to check.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press
Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows may beep and the display may flicker briefly while the graphics stack restarts. This does not reinstall the driver or erase game settings; it is a temporary recovery attempt. - Cycle Windows display modes. Press
Windows key + P, pressPagain to move through the choices, and pressEnter. This can recover a picture sent to a disconnected second display or an unintended projection mode. - Test a basic workload. After the desktop returns, play a video or use the desktop for a few minutes. If ordinary work is stable but a 3D game triggers the failure, record that distinction rather than repeatedly forcing a restart.
If the screen remains blank and Windows is not responding, use the PC’s normal restart procedure if possible. Repeated forced shutdowns can lose unsaved work; reserve them for a system that cannot be recovered any other way.
Could the cable, port, or monitor be losing the signal?
Yes. A bad connection or display input can look exactly like a graphics failure. Test the signal path only after the free checks above, and match the replacement to your actual setup.

| Different compatible cable | Use a known-good cable of the same connector type and a suitable length. HDMI users should test HDMI; DisplayPort users should test DisplayPort rather than switching types without the required adapter. | If the problem disappears, the original cable or its connection is suspect. The test does not prove that a new cable is required permanently. |
| Different port on the PC or monitor | Move the cable to another compatible output or input, then select that input on the monitor. | A single loose or damaged port becomes less likely if another port remains stable. |
| Another monitor or television | Connect a known-good display using the same type of output where practical. | If the second display also loses signal under the same game load, investigate the PC, driver, or software rather than the first monitor. |
Intel’s troubleshooting guidance includes changing the video cable or port and trying another display for its documented graphics cases. Those are diagnostic options, not a guarantee that HDMI, DisplayPort, or the monitor is the cause.
Did the black screen begin after a graphics-driver or Windows update?
A close timing link changes the safest next step: roll back the affected driver when Windows offers that option, and use the computer maker’s package on an OEM system instead of assuming a generic driver is appropriate.
Check the timeline
- Write down the date of the graphics-driver, BIOS, or Windows update and the first game session that failed.
- Check whether the problem occurs in the desktop, in every game, or only with a particular graphics API or title.
- Undo only the change that has a clear time relationship. Changing several drivers and settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret.
Roll back or reinstall through official support
In Device Manager, open Display adapters, open the affected adapter’s Properties, and inspect the Driver tab. If Roll Back Driver is available and the issue began after the update, Microsoft recommends trying it. The button may be unavailable when Windows has no previous package to restore.

For a laptop, prebuilt desktop, or other OEM system, check the PC manufacturer’s support page and model-specific instructions. Customized power, display, or switching-graphics behavior can depend on that package. For a separately installed graphics card, follow the GPU manufacturer’s official driver instructions. Do not tell every system to install the newest generic package: “newest” is not automatically “compatible.”
Intel’s documented black-screen cases also include updating BIOS and graphics drivers, checking cables and ports, and trying another display. Those recommendations apply to the hardware and cases Intel describes; they are not universal directions to flash a BIOS or change firmware when the timeline does not support it.
When Windows is difficult to use
Microsoft’s blank-screen recovery options include Safe Mode. From the Windows recovery environment, use Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and restart to choose Safe Mode. The exact screen can vary by Windows version and recovery state. In Safe Mode, remove or roll back the suspected change using the official vendor procedure, then restart normally. Avoid treating a third-party driver-removal utility as a routine first step; use the manufacturer’s documented clean-install or removal process if one is required.
How do I tell whether one game or background software is responsible?
If the desktop and other games remain stable, investigate the affected game before changing system hardware. If several games or applications fail, isolate Windows services and startup programs.
Test a single-game failure
- Install the game’s official updates and check its support or known-issues page for the version you are running.
- Use the game launcher’s file-verification or repair function if it provides one.
- Temporarily choose a lower graphics preset or windowed mode. This is a diagnostic change: if it stops the black screen, note which setting changed and restore features one at a time.
- Disable optional overlays, capture tools, or monitoring layers one at a time, then retest. Re-enable each item after the test so you know which change mattered.
A title that fails only after a particular amount of play may be exposing a thermal or memory-stability problem even when the game itself is the visible trigger. A title that fails immediately after its update may instead have a version-specific bug. Keep those possibilities separate.

Use a clean boot for several-app failures
Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure starts Windows with a limited set of services and startup items. Use it as a diagnostic state, not as a permanent performance tweak.
- Sign in with an administrator account, type
msconfigin the taskbar search, and open System Configuration. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first helps avoid disabling core Windows components.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled startup items, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart and reproduce the game failure. If the black screen disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups or individually until the conflicting item is identified.
- When finished, return to System Configuration, choose Normal startup on the General tab, re-enable the items you need, and restart. Microsoft specifically instructs users to restore normal startup after troubleshooting.
What if the PC freezes, restarts, or shows a stop code?
A system-wide freeze or restart requires broader stability checks. Do not buy a power supply or graphics card solely because the monitor went black; first gather evidence about heat, settings, drivers, hardware connections, and power requirements.
Return performance settings to stock
Temporarily undo CPU, GPU, or memory overclocks, undervolts, aggressive tuning profiles, and custom fan curves. AMD’s stability guidance emphasizes checking whether CPU, GPU, and RAM are operating at factory-recommended settings. A game can expose an instability that lighter applications never reach.
“For system stability issues, it is essential to verify the following: Are the system hardware components (CPU, GPU, RAM) operating at factory recommended settings?”

Check cooling and the pattern of failure
Record temperatures with a trusted monitor while reproducing the problem, if you can do so safely. Look for a repeatable relationship between a rising temperature, fan behavior, and the black screen. Clear external dust from vents, verify that the PC has unobstructed airflow, and follow the computer manual before opening a case. Do not continue a test that produces an unusual smell, visible damage, or rapidly escalating temperatures.

Check power and seating carefully
- Confirm that the graphics card, where user-accessible, is fully seated and that its auxiliary power connectors are attached as specified by the PC or card manual.
- Compare the installed hardware with the system’s documented power requirements. An apparent power problem can also be a cable, connector, driver, or thermal problem.
- On a laptop or sealed system, use the manufacturer’s service guidance or qualified support rather than opening the device without the required procedure.
AMD lists overheating, unstable overclocking, outdated or corrupted drivers, conflicting software, incompatible or faulty hardware, and inadequate power requirements among possible causes of stability problems. Intel explains that Windows can detect and attempt to recover from a graphics-processing timeout during demanding work such as gameplay. A timeout is a clue to investigate, not proof that one particular component has failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I check DirectX?
Check DirectX when the game reports a DirectX error, a graphics API error, or a version mismatch. It is less useful as a general response to every black screen.
- Press
Windows key + R, typedxdiag, and pressEnter. - Allow the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to collect information, then review the System tab for the installed DirectX version and the display-related tabs for reported problems.
- Use Windows Update for the current DirectX components supplied for your installed Windows version. Do not download “DirectX” packages from unofficial sites.
Microsoft describes DirectX as Windows components that let software—especially games—work with video and audio hardware. The DxDiag result helps identify the environment; it does not by itself prove that DirectX caused the black screen.

- Do not change BIOS, voltage, fan, and driver settings simultaneously. Make one controlled change, test, and record the result.
- Do not leave a clean boot enabled. It disables normal services and startup programs; restore normal startup after the test.
- Do not keep stressing an unstable machine. Repeated crashes, unusual heat, electrical odor, or visible hardware damage are reasons to stop and seek qualified help.
- Do not purchase a cable, GPU, monitor, or power supply without a matching test. A replacement is justified as a diagnostic step only when the connector and observed symptoms point to that part.
When should I get professional help?
Seek the PC or component manufacturer’s support when the machine repeatedly freezes or restarts after stock settings, when Safe Mode and the official driver procedure do not restore stability, or when hardware must be removed or reseated and you are not comfortable doing it. Bring the symptom record: game and Windows versions, update dates, display type, exact stop code, whether audio continued, temperatures if safely measured, and which cable, monitor, or port tests changed the result.
For a display-only failure, support can focus on the monitor and signal path. For a full-system crash, provide the restart or stop-code evidence and ask for stability diagnostics rather than requesting a replacement part based only on the black screen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a black screen during a game permanently damage my graphics card?
The symptom alone does not establish physical damage. Stop testing if you notice abnormal heat, a burning smell, visible damage, or repeated uncontrolled shutdowns; otherwise, use the recorded timing and recovery behavior to guide software and hardware diagnostics.
Why does the game audio keep playing when the monitor is black?
The game process and audio pipeline can continue even when the display driver, display mode, cable, or monitor input has stopped producing a picture. That is why the graphics-driver reset and display-mode shortcut are useful early tests.
Should I use a third-party driver-cleaning tool?
Not as a routine first step. Try the rollback, Safe Mode, or clean-install/removal procedure documented by the PC or graphics-card manufacturer, because OEM systems may depend on customized components.
How can I capture useful evidence after the next crash?
Write down the exact time, game, display message, whether audio and keyboard input continued, and whether Windows restarted. After reboot, check Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer for entries at that time and preserve any stop-code text before making another change.

No. A cable swap is worthwhile when the signal path is suspect, but DisplayPort systems need a compatible DisplayPort test and a successful swap only identifies the original path as suspect. A cable cannot explain every full-system freeze or restart.
