1. Classify the symptom
Note whether the Decky icon is absent, Decky opens but one plugin fails, or several plugins fail. Write down the exact error and the last change before it appeared, such as a SteamOS update, a new Desktop Mode service, or a plugin update. 4. Install pending SteamOS updates
Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates. Apply every available update, restart when prompted, and test the Quick Access menu again. Decky may need its installer rerun after the operating system changes.

5. Disable recent third-party Desktop Mode software
If the failure began after installing software outside Steam, temporarily stop or disable that software in Desktop Mode. Reboot and retest. This isolates services that alter networking, startup behavior, or system files without removing Decky itself.
6. Check for a port conflict
Decky requires ports 8080 and 1337 to remain available. Close or reconfigure services using either port; the Decky README calls out Syncthing as one example. 8. Prepare a way to type
A USB-C or Bluetooth keyboard makes installer and terminal input easier, but it is optional. Decky’s instructions also support the trackpad and the on-screen keyboard. Connect the input device before downloading or launching the installer if typing is difficult with the touchscreen.

9. Rerun the official Decky installer
In Desktop Mode, download the installer from the official Decky project and run it. Select Latest Release (stable) first. This reinstalls the loader component rather than re-imaging SteamOS, so it is the appropriate repair for a missing Decky entry and should not remove your Steam library.
10. Return to Gaming Mode and retest
Use the desktop shortcut to return to Gaming Mode, open Quick Access, and look for Decky. Open it and check whether the plugins load. If you previously disabled optional plugins, leave them disabled for the first test so a faulty extension does not obscure a successful loader repair.

11. Isolate a single-plugin failure
If Decky opens but one plugin crashes or shows an error, do not reinstall the entire loader first. Update that plugin, reload it, or uninstall only that plugin, then check its maintainer’s issue tracker for a SteamOS-version compatibility note. Other plugins can remain installed while you identify the offending extension.

13. Escalate to Valve recovery
When SteamOS itself is damaged or multiple unrelated system functions fail, review Valve’s recovery choices: rollback, factory reset, erasing user data, or re-imaging/repairing SteamOS. Will fixing Decky Loader delete my games?
