If Escape the Backrooms freezes, hangs while loading, crashes when joining friends, or refuses to connect on PC, first update the game, then check whether the problem is local or lobby-related. The latest official PC patch is 1.3.2, released June 15, 2026, and it fixed several crashes, loading hangs, lobby-join failures, and voice-chat problems.
1. Update Escape the Backrooms first
Open Steam and install every available update for Escape the Backrooms. Patches 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 specifically addressed problems that can look like a frozen game or broken co-op:

- Loading-screen hangs and temporary lockups.
- Crashes immediately after creating a lobby.
- Crashes when selecting Cancel after the host has left.
- Failure to join another lobby after being invited to a full lobby.
- A softlock after joining an in-progress cross-platform lobby and returning to the lobby.
- Crashes after idling in the HUB.
- Voice chat disappearing during level transitions or after loading.
If your game is already on the latest available build and the same issue continues, continue with the steps below.
2. Verify the game files
Steam file verification can repair missing or corrupted local installation files. It does not specifically repair multiplayer services or guarantee a fix for a lobby bug.

- Right-click Escape the Backrooms and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart the game.

3. Fix co-op connection and lobby problems
Use the current cross-platform system
Since the May 28, 2026 update, Escape the Backrooms uses Epic Online Services for cross-platform matchmaking. An Epic account sign-in is not required. The game supports online co-op for one to four players across supported platforms.
For a private session, create a lobby and share its code. The current join control is labelled Enter with Room Code. Codes work for both private and public lobbies, and the code can be hidden to prevent unwanted players from joining.

Cross-platform matchmaking can be disabled in the game’s Settings menu. If friends are playing on another platform, make sure it is enabled for everyone. If you are troubleshooting a same-platform connection, temporarily disabling cross-platform matchmaking can help isolate whether the problem is related to the cross-platform lobby path.
Check the lobby state before retrying
- Full lobby: Wait for an opening or have the host create a new lobby. A full lobby now reports that it is full instead of failing silently.
- Host left or disconnected: Return to the main menu and join a newly created lobby. The game now displays corrected host-departure and internet-disconnection messages.
- You were kicked: A kicked client cannot rejoin that lobby. A failed rejoin is therefore an enforced lobby restriction, not necessarily a network failure.
- Lobby was just created: If joining immediately causes a crash, have the host wait briefly and then invite or share the room code again. This crash was addressed in Patch 1.3.1.
- Session is already in progress: Avoid joining a cross-platform lobby mid-session and then returning to the lobby if possible. That softlock was fixed in Patch 1.3.1, but starting a fresh session is still the clearest troubleshooting test.
- Room-code join does not transition: Update to Patch 1.3.2, which fixed failure to transition immediately into a multiplayer session from Enter with Room Code.
Do not use the lobby’s displayed ping as a definitive diagnosis: the displayed ping was removed because it was inaccurate and caused confusion.
4. Fix freezing and loading-screen hangs
First distinguish a genuine freeze from a slow transition. If the game remains unresponsive, close it through Windows and relaunch it after verifying the files. If the problem occurs specifically while joining or loading into co-op, test a new lobby rather than repeatedly rejoining the same session.

Known loading and freezing-related failures were addressed in recent patches, including temporary loading-screen hangs, stuttering, crashes after lobby creation, and HUB-idle crashes. If those failures still occur on the current build:
- Restart both the host’s and client’s game.
- Have the host create a completely new lobby.
- Join after the lobby has finished creating rather than instantly.
- Test with cross-platform matchmaking disabled if everyone is on the same platform.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Check that the PC meets the current system requirements.
5. Check the PC requirements
The current Steam listing specifies these requirements:

Older guides may claim that a GTX 650 is required, but that is not the current Steam requirement. The listing now specifies a DirectX 11- or 12-compatible graphics card.

6. Do not rely on outdated fixes
- Do not assume multiplayer is Steam-only: cross-platform matchmaking and lobby codes were added in May 2026.
- Do not sign in to Epic just to make matchmaking work: the EOS system does not require an Epic account sign-in.
- Do not look for an HDR toggle: HDR was removed because of a bug and is not a current PC setting.
- Do not treat
-dx11as an official fix: current official documentation does not recommend that launch command. DirectX 11 is already listed as a requirement. - Do not diagnose the problem from lobby ping: the displayed value was removed because it was inaccurate.
7. Fix missing or broken voice chat
Escape the Backrooms uses proximity voice chat, so nearby entities may hear players. That is different from teammates failing to hear you because voice chat is malfunctioning.

The relevant chat-display setting is labelled Show Game Chat. If you connect a headset after launching the game and receive no audio, restart the game with the headset already connected.
Recent official fixes cover voice disappearing after a random period or level transition, one player’s voice failing in a three-player session, the last eliminated player’s audio disappearing after returning to the lobby, microphone echo with push-to-talk, and voice loss after loading. If voice still fails, leave and recreate the lobby after confirming the game is updated.

Lobby controls also allow players to mute voice chat, mute PC text chat, kick, block, and report other players. Check that the affected player has not been muted.
8. When the problem is probably not your PC
The problem is more likely lobby- or service-related when the game runs normally in single-player but freezes or crashes only while joining co-op. It is also likely session-specific when a new lobby works, when only one host causes the failure, or when the game clearly reports that the lobby is full, the host left, or you were kicked.
