Start with the message you can see. GameGuard Error 114 and “GameGuard Initialize Error” use the legacy GameGuard repair path. Helldivers 2 has since moved to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), so launch crashes after that transition—including 0xc0000142—usually require removing leftover GameGuard files and repairing the current installation. An out-of-date-file message such as 0x44415441 points first to Steam’s file-verification tool.

These branches overlap, but their order matters. A GameGuard reinstall is not a substitute for cleaning an old GameGuard directory after the EAC transition, and file verification cannot repair every Windows compatibility or security-software conflict.

Write down the exact wording or code, and note whether the failure began immediately after an anti-cheat or game update. That one detail determines whether to start with the legacy installer or the EAC cleanup. Close Helldivers 2 before deleting files, and close Steam too if Windows reports that a file is still in use. Work through one branch at a time so you know which change affected the result.
The procedures do not require buying hardware or a paid repair utility. They use Steam, Windows, the files already installed with Helldivers 2, and Arrowhead Player Support. Why does Helldivers 2 still show GameGuard when the game uses EAC?
Helldivers 2 transitioned from nProtect GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat. A PC can therefore contain old GameGuard executables, registry entries, or folders even though the current launcher expects EAC. Legacy support remains relevant when the launcher explicitly reports Error 114 or an initialization error. In that case, Arrowhead’s Error 114 procedure repairs the old component directly. If the message appeared after the EAC change, use the transition procedure first instead of repeatedly reinstalling the legacy component.
Seeing the word “GameGuard” is therefore not enough to identify the current anti-cheat state. Check the code and the timing. A leftover folder can cause a post-transition crash, while a direct Error 114 message calls for the older gguninst and GGSetup sequence.
How do I fix GameGuard Error 114?
Follow these steps in order. They use only the Steam installation and Windows settings, and each change can be reversed.
1. Open the Helldivers 2 installation folder
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2.
- Choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.
- Open the
binfolder.
Using Steam’s Browse Local Files command avoids guessing where the library is installed. If you have more than one Steam library, this opens the copy that Steam actually launches.
2. Run the game executable as administrator
In bin, right-click helldivers2 and choose Properties. Open the Compatibility tab, enable Run this program as an administrator, select Apply, and then OK. Try launching from Steam again.

3. Reinstall GameGuard manually
If Error 114 remains, return to the Helldivers 2 installation directory and open tools.
- Right-click
gguninstand choose Run as administrator. - Wait for the uninstall operation to finish.

GGSetupand choose Run as administrator. - When setup completes, launch Helldivers 2 from Steam.
Run the uninstall step before setup; installing over a partially removed component can leave the same initialization failure in place. This is the legacy path, so do not use it as a substitute for deleting stale GameGuard files when the failure started with the EAC transition.
4. Close possible utility conflicts
Arrowhead states that “Error 114 can trigger for various reasons,” including non-hack-related programs. Temporarily close overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, macro utilities, RGB controllers, and other background utilities one group at a time, then retry. The error is not evidence that one of those programs is malicious or that the account has cheated.
Testing one group at a time is more useful than closing everything and reopening it together. If the game launches, restore utilities individually to identify the conflicting program. If nothing changes, continue to the security-software and compatibility checks rather than assuming the utility theory was proven.
5. Check firewall and antivirus interference
For diagnosis, temporarily disable Windows Defender or another security product, or add exceptions for nProtect GameGuard and HELLDIVERS 2. Launch once as a controlled test, then immediately restore protection if it did not help. If an exception fixes the launch, keep the exception narrowly scoped to the named game and anti-cheat components rather than leaving all security protection disabled.

6. Consider the uncommon connected-drive case
Arrowhead notes that an older connected hard drive has rarely caused registry creation to hang. Disconnecting an old secondary drive is an advanced, uncommon branch—not a first-line fix. Shut down the PC before changing internal hardware, and do not disconnect the drive that contains your Windows installation.

Only the contents of the Helldivers 2 folder are named in this procedure. Do not use the AppData location as a reason to remove unrelated Arrowhead or Windows folders.
2. Remove the remaining GameGuard files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Manage → Browse Local Files.
- Open the
EasyAntiCheatfolder and runGGuninst.exe. - Check
binGameGuard. If that folder still exists, delete the entireGameGuardfolder.
Use the exact folders named above. Do not delete the whole game directory or other bin contents at this stage. The purpose is to remove the old component while leaving Steam’s current installation structure intact.
3. Update Windows and drivers, then choose Restart
Install pending Windows updates and current graphics or chipset-driver updates supplied for your hardware. Then select Restart from Windows’ power menu. Arrowhead distinguishes Restart from merely choosing Shut down in this workflow: a restart reloads the Windows kernel and driver state that anti-cheat initialization depends on.
If Windows offers several updates, let them finish before testing the game. A launch attempt during a pending restart can make it unclear whether the cleanup worked.

After Windows restarts, open the game’s Steam properties and select Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish reacquiring or replacing files, then launch Helldivers 2.
5. Reacquire the deeper file set only if the crash persists
If the same failure remains, Arrowhead’s deeper step is to delete the bin and data folders from the local installation, return to Installed Files, and run Verify integrity of game files again. Steam will download those folders again. Delete only bin and data; removing unrelated directories can create a separate installation problem.
