Fix: Rise of the Ronin Crashing on Steam Deck

Start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then disable Deck utilities, verify the game files, and test Proton and graphics settings one at a time.

If Rise of the Ronin keeps crashing on your Steam Deck, start with reversible checks: update SteamOS and restart, temporarily disable third-party Deck utilities, update the game and verify its files, then test a Proton compatibility option and lower graphics settings one change at a time. If frame generation is enabled, test with it off. The game is currently listed as Playable, but that label does not mean crash-free.

Try these Steam Deck crash fixes in order

After each change, launch the game and see whether the same crash happens. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify a trigger and undo a setting that does not help.

  1. Install SteamOS updates and restart. Valve includes system updates and a restart among its first troubleshooting steps for instability. See Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Temporarily disable third-party applications. Exit or disable applications installed through Desktop Mode, including Deck utilities, then retest. If the crash stops, re-enable them one at a time to help identify a conflict.
  3. Update the game and verify its files. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and use the Installed Files section to verify the integrity of the game files. KOEI TECMO recommends file verification for startup or slow-running problems on Steam; this is a general Steam check, not a Deck-specific guarantee. Its Steam troubleshooting article also includes Windows-only instructions, which should not be followed as SteamOS steps.
  4. Test a Proton compatibility option. In the game’s Steam properties, open Compatibility and try a different available Proton compatibility tool. Retest before changing another setting; a compatibility change is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
  5. Reduce graphics load. Lower graphics settings and retest. Team Ninja’s Steam update history says version 1.09.0.2 added Graphics Mode options for prioritizing graphics or FPS, and version 1.09.0.3 added Dynamic Adjustment of FPS and reduced overall VRAM use. These changes may help you choose settings to test, but the notes do not identify them as general crash fixes.
  6. Turn off frame generation if it is enabled. An older ProtonDB Steam Deck report associates frame generation with crashes. The Deck evidence is limited to two reports on the page, so treat this as a targeted test rather than a proven fix for every player.

What the Playable rating tells you—and what it does not

Valve’s compatibility program uses Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown categories. For Playable, Valve says, “The game works, but may require some manual configuration from the user to play.” The criteria consider input, display, seamlessness, and system support; the label is not a promise of an ideal or crash-free experience. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility criteria.

The game’s Steam Deck compatibility record lists Rise of the Ronin as Playable, says it runs successfully on SteamOS, and flags manual graphics configuration and small in-game text. Its test timestamp is 2026-09-01. This is a status snapshot, not a diagnosis of an individual crash or a guarantee that behavior will be identical across Deck models, SteamOS builds, Proton versions, and settings. The record is available through SteamDB’s compatibility data for the game.

What the game’s crash-fix patches cover

Team Ninja’s Steam update history documents fixes for particular crashes, not a single fix that covers every Steam Deck crash:

  • Version 1.09.0.1, 2025-03-14: fixed a launch crash affecting CPUs with 33 or more threads and a crash associated with interacting with a Veiled Edge Banner in specific circumstances.
  • Version 1.09.0.2, 2025-03-25: says it fixed an issue where crashes occurred.
  • Version 1.09.0.3, 2025-04-10: also lists a crash fix.
  • Version 1.09.0.5, 2025-11-11: fixed a crash after certain Windows updates, triggered when certain characters or equipment appeared on screen. Team Ninja’s note, “We have now fixed this bug,” refers to that specific issue.

These are developer-reported fixes for the Steam edition. The patch notes do not say that any one of them resolves all crashes on Steam Deck. Read the Team Ninja update history on Steam for the full notes.
