If South Park: The Fractured But Whole freezes, closes, or will not start on Nintendo Switch, first restart the console, install available system and game updates, then use the system’s Check for Corrupt Data option. If you play a downloaded copy and the problem continues, delete and redownload it—preferably to system memory while temporarily removing the microSD card. Nintendo lists a separate startup issue for this game on Switch 2, so identify your console model before treating it as an ordinary Switch crash.
First, identify your console and the exact failure
Nintendo’s general troubleshooting steps apply to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Nintendo separately lists South Park: The Fractured But Whole among Switch games with startup issues on Switch 2, with the issue marked as under investigation. That notice is about starting the game on Switch 2; it does not establish a general cause for crashes on the original Switch family or mean every Switch 2 player will encounter the issue. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information is the place to check for the latest status.

Before troubleshooting, note whether the console is a Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2; whether the game is downloaded or on a game card; the exact error message; and when the failure occurs. For example, record whether it happens at startup, during a particular scene, or after loading a specific save. Those details can help support narrow down the issue, but a crash at one point does not by itself prove that a save is corrupt.
Try Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps in order
After each step, launch the game again and check whether the same problem occurs. If Nintendo displays “The software was closed because an error occurred,” its guidance is to verify whether the issue is resolved after each step. - Restart the console. Use the console’s power options to restart it, then launch the game again.
- Install any available system update. Check for a system update in the console’s System Settings and complete it before retesting.
- Check for a game update. Select the game on the HOME Menu and use its software-update option to check for an available update.
- Check for corrupt data. In System Settings, open Data Management, choose Software, select South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and choose Check for Corrupt Data. If the console reports a problem, follow its prompts and test the game again.
- If you have a downloaded copy, delete and redownload the software. Nintendo recommends downloading to system memory for this test. If the game is on a microSD card, temporarily remove the card before redownloading, then see whether the problem persists.
- Re-test at the same point. If the crash happened after loading a particular save or reaching a specific location, return to that point if possible and note whether it happens again.
Nintendo’s full instructions for a frozen or unresponsive downloaded game include checking for software updates and corrupt data, then deleting and redownloading the title; they also suggest testing another microSD card or system memory when a card may be involved. Choose the right branch for your copy of the game
Downloaded copy
Deleting and redownloading is Nintendo’s prescribed next step when the update and data check have not resolved the problem. Prefer system memory for this test if available. If the game was stored on a microSD card, removing the card temporarily can help distinguish a card-related problem from one that continues without it. Nintendo also suggests trying another microSD card where relevant.

Game card
The delete-and-redownload step is for downloaded software, so it is not the equivalent fix for a cartridge. Complete the restart, update, and corrupt-data checks first. When contacting support, say that you use a game card and describe exactly when the crash occurs; do not assume the card or save data is at fault without further diagnosis.

Do not format a card as a routine troubleshooting step. Nintendo warns that formatting a microSD card deletes data stored on it. If you are considering any card-management action that could erase files, first back up relevant screenshots and videos and follow Nintendo’s instructions for your console.

If the game still closes after Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence, contact Nintendo Support. Include the console model, the exact error text, whether the game is downloaded or on a game card, the game and system software versions, and the point at which the crash occurs. If it happens with one save or in one location, mention that observation without presenting it as proof that the save is damaged.
