If The Forest says the server timed out, cannot connect to the server, or drops a co-op join attempt, work through the checks in this order: restart Steam on both computers, make sure both installations are on the same game version, have the host wait for the friend to join before pressing Start, then investigate firewall, NAT and port-forwarding settings. This sequence addresses the most common client, session-timing and reachability failures without jumping straight to a reinstall.

The Forest’s normal peer-hosted co-op and its dedicated-server tool fail in slightly different ways. A friend who cannot even enter the lobby points to Steam state, version or network reachability. A friend who reaches the lobby but times out when the world starts points more strongly to host timing or a blocked game connection. Dedicated servers add Server.cfg, router forwarding and firewall rules to the diagnosis.

A timeout means the joining game did not receive a usable response from the host before the connection attempt expired. It does not identify one specific fault. The failure can be on the joining PC, in the host’s session setup, or between the two networks.

Diagnose in that order. Reinstalling the game before checking Steam state, versions and reachability usually changes nothing.

Run the quick fix sequence first
- Restart Steam on both computers. Exit Steam completely rather than merely closing the window. Start it again on the host and the joining machine, then launch The Forest from Steam.
- Confirm both players have the same game version. In Steam’s library, open the game’s Properties and use the Updates settings so it is set to keep itself updated. If the versions still appear inconsistent, use the installed-files option to verify the game files on both machines and let Steam finish any download.
- Have the host wait for the friend. Create or load the co-op session, invite the other player and wait until the friend has successfully joined the lobby. Do not press Start while the friend is still connecting. Community troubleshooting reports that starting the world too early can make the joiner’s attempt time out.
- Try the join again before changing router settings. If the second attempt works after the restart and version check, the problem was a stale Steam state or a session race rather than a missing port.
- Only then move to network checks. If the same error persists, continue with the firewall, NAT and dedicated-server sections below.
Make the two game installations match
Check the update channel
Both players need to be on the same release. A pending download, an interrupted update or a different Steam branch can leave one machine unable to complete the handshake. In Steam, open Library → right-click The Forest → Properties → Updates and choose the normal option that keeps the game updated. Allow Steam to finish queued downloads before testing again.
Verify installed files
When Steam reports a different build or the game behaves as though files are missing, use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files on each computer. Verification can replace damaged files; it does not erase a save as part of the normal Steam process. Wait for the operation and any follow-up download to complete on both machines, then restart Steam once more and retry the invite.
Do not assume a 2026 patch changed the fix
No current patch notes establish that these connection steps changed for 2026. A community guide labels itself with a May 3, 2026 update date, but that date is not independently verified. Treat the version-matching procedure as applicable troubleshooting, not as proof that every current build has identical networking behavior.
Use the correct host order
The host’s sequence matters in ordinary peer-hosted co-op. Keep the session in its lobby or pre-game state while the other player connects. Wait for the friend to appear as joined, then press Start and load the world. If the host starts immediately, the joining client can time out even when Steam invitations and internet access are otherwise working.

A clean timing test
- Both players exit to Steam and restart it.
- The host creates the multiplayer session and sends the invitation.
- The joining player accepts and waits until the lobby shows a completed connection.
- The host confirms the friend is present before selecting Start.
- If the load fails, return to the lobby and repeat once before changing settings.
This test isolates a host-session race from a router problem. If delaying Start fixes the issue, no port change is required for that session.
Check Windows firewall and local network access
A firewall can allow Steam while blocking the game’s server process. On the host, open the operating system’s firewall controls and inspect both private and public network rules for The Forest and its dedicated-server executable. Allow the executable on the network profile the host is actually using. If a security suite has its own firewall, check that product as well; changing only the built-in firewall may leave the second filter blocking the connection.
Use a reversible test
If you need to determine whether the firewall is responsible, create a temporary, narrowly scoped allow rule or briefly disable the third-party firewall while testing with a trusted friend. Re-enable protection immediately after the test. A successful join during that short test confirms a rule problem; replace the temporary change with a permanent allow rule rather than leaving the firewall disabled.
Confirm the host’s local address
Port forwarding must point to the host computer’s current LAN address, such as its private IPv4 address. DHCP can change that address after a reboot. Check the host’s network details immediately before editing the router rule and, where the router supports it, create a DHCP reservation so the address remains stable. Forwarding to an old address makes a rule look correct while sending traffic to the wrong device.

The official The Forest dedicated-server documentation lists these community-reported default values:

These are defaults, not a guarantee that your instance uses them. Read the values in the server’s own Server.cfg and forward the values shown there. The file is generated on the first dedicated-server launch. One commonly cited Windows location is AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg; treat that path as a guide and search for Server.cfg if your installation uses a different location.

Also be cautious with third-party configuration pages that label port 8766 as an RCON or Telnet port or list unrelated settings; those labels are not confirmed by the official dedicated-server documentation.
Forward the dedicated-server ports
Port forwarding is relevant to a server that must accept connections from outside the host’s home network. It is not automatically required for every ordinary Steam co-op session, and game-specific confirmation of every router scenario is limited. If you are running the dedicated tool, use this procedure:

- Record the actual configuration. Open
Server.cfgand write downserverSteamPort,serverGamePortandserverQueryPort. Use the configured values instead of assuming the defaults. - Find the host’s LAN IPv4 address. On the host, view the active network adapter’s local address. It should be the address assigned by your router, not the public address shown by an internet speed-test page.
- Create router rules for the configured ports. In the router’s port-forwarding section, make rules that send the server’s required UDP traffic to the host’s LAN address. If the router asks for an internal and external port, enter the same configured number in both fields unless your server documentation explicitly specifies a translation.
- Give the rule a clear name. Identify it as the The Forest dedicated server and select the correct protocol. Avoid forwarding broad port ranges when the configuration lists individual ports.
- Allow the same traffic through the host firewall. A router rule cannot bypass a Windows or security-suite firewall. Permit the dedicated-server process and the configured ports on the host.
- Restart the server process. Start the dedicated server after saving the router and firewall changes, then test from an external connection.
The documented defaults are 8766, 27015 and 27016, but a rule for those numbers is wrong if your Server.cfg or command line overrides them. Keep the configuration and router rules synchronized.
Recognize NAT and router failure modes
Several general networking conditions can prevent an externally hosted game from being reached. They are common causes of hosted-server failures, although they are not all confirmed as The Forest-specific defects.

- Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): Your internet provider may place multiple customers behind one public IPv4 address. A home router rule cannot accept unsolicited inbound traffic if the provider does not give your connection a routable address.
- Double NAT: A modem/router and a second router may both perform NAT. Forwarding on only the inner router leaves the outer device blocking the connection.
- Hairpin NAT: A player inside the same home network may be unable to reach the host through its public address even though an outside player can. Test from a genuinely external network before concluding that forwarding is broken.
- Wrong LAN target: The host’s private address may have changed, or the rule may point to another computer.
- Wrong firewall profile or protocol: A rule for a private network may not apply when Windows identifies the connection as public, and a TCP-only rule does not match required UDP traffic.
If your router reports that its internet address is private or differs from the address shown by your provider, ask the provider whether CGNAT is in use. You may need a public IPv4 option, bridge mode or a supported relay solution; changing the game’s files will not remove an upstream NAT barrier.

A useful isolation test is to have the joining player try from a phone hotspot or another independent internet connection. This recommendation comes from troubleshooting for Sons of the Forest and is an analogy, not a game-specific confirmation for The Forest.

- It works on the alternate network: The original router, ISP path, NAT arrangement or firewall is the likely boundary. Focus on forwarding, double NAT, CGNAT and security rules.
- It fails on both networks: The problem is more likely Steam state, mismatched versions, host timing, the dedicated-server configuration or a host-side firewall.
- Only players on the same home network fail: Hairpin NAT or local-address handling may be involved; test with an outside player and use the host’s LAN address only where the application requires it.
Do not treat a hotspot result as proof that a particular port is open. It only separates the original network path from the game and host configuration.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling first: A reinstall does not refresh a router’s NAT state or correct a mismatched lobby sequence. Perform the restart, version and timing checks first.
- Forwarding the wrong file’s ports: Use
Server.cfgfor The Forest; do not copy settings from a Sons of the Forest guide without checking the game and tool. - Assuming default ports are permanent: Command-line options can override 8766, 27015 or 27016. The running configuration is authoritative.
- Forwarding to a public IP: The router’s destination must be the host’s private LAN address. Players use the appropriate external address to reach the router, while the router forwards internally.
- Testing only from inside the house: Same-network tests can be distorted by hairpin NAT. Include an external connection in the diagnosis.
- Leaving security disabled: Use a temporary firewall test only with a trusted player, then restore protection and create a precise allow rule.
When the fix is outside the game
If Steam restarts, matching versions, delayed host startup and verified files do not change the result, and the server fails from an independent network, collect the exact symptom: whether the lobby appears, whether the timeout occurs before or after world loading, whether a dedicated process stays running, and which ports are configured. Those details distinguish a client handshake problem from a host process or network reachability problem.

The available guidance does not establish a universal current patch-specific fix, a guaranteed port set for every installation, or a published success rate. The reliable approach is therefore controlled isolation: client checks first, host timing second, then firewall, configured ports and upstream NAT.
