The “Invalid configuration information – please run SETUP program” message appears before Windows 10 starts, so it is usually a BIOS/UEFI configuration problem rather than a Windows file error. Enter your computer’s firmware setup, load appropriate defaults, correct the clock, and verify the boot mode and boot order. If the date and time keep resetting after the computer is unplugged, replace the CMOS battery (commonly a CR2032). If BitLocker is enabled, have its recovery key ready before changing firmware or TPM-related settings. The exact key names and menu labels vary by manufacturer.

What does “Invalid configuration information” mean?

This warning is generated by firmware during the power-on self-test (POST), before Windows loads. A Dell hardware manual describes the message as “Invalid configuration information – please run SETUP program.” In that context, the firmware has detected a configuration that cannot be used safely and has halted startup until you review System Setup.

Dell’s SupportAssist guidance pairs it with “Time-of-day not set – please run SETUP program” and attributes the condition to a system BIOS reset. A reset can erase customized settings, alter Secure Boot, change the boot order, or switch between UEFI and Legacy boot modes. Those changes can make a previously working Windows installation appear to be missing even though the drive and files are still present.

This pre-boot warning is different from Windows Device Manager Code 19. Microsoft defines Code 19 as a device whose registry configuration information is incomplete or damaged after Windows has started; its remedies involve reinstalling the device driver or restoring an earlier configuration. Use the firmware steps in this article only when the message appears before Windows.

Which symptom points to which cause?

The pattern on screen and what happens after a complete shutdown provide the best first clue. Use the table to choose the least risky next step.

Observed symptom Most likely explanation First action Main risk to check
One warning immediately after a reset, update, or power event BIOS settings were reset or changed Enter Setup, load the vendor’s defaults, then verify boot settings Secure Boot, boot order, or boot mode may no longer match Windows
Date and time are wrong again after the computer is unplugged or its battery is removed CMOS battery is no longer retaining settings Replace the coin-cell battery, then set the clock and boot options again Opening the case; the exact battery location and procedure are model-specific
The machine loops, powers off, or loses a drive or memory device Loose or recently changed hardware, a failing component, or a board fault Disconnect non-essential peripherals, reseat approved internal connections, and run built-in diagnostics Further disassembly or BIOS flashing can cause model-specific damage
Windows was installed in Legacy mode but firmware now shows UEFI, or the reverse Boot-mode mismatch after a reset Return firmware to the mode used by the existing installation Switching modes blindly can produce a no-boot state
A device shows an error only after Windows opens Windows configuration or driver problem, such as Code 19 Use Device Manager recovery steps instead of changing BIOS Firmware changes will not repair a registry or driver error

What should I record before changing BIOS settings?

Take a phone photo or write down the exact message, any error code, the key shown for Setup, the computer model, and whether the clock is wrong. These details help you restore the previous state and give a technician useful information if the machine still will not boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the computer uses BitLocker device encryption. A firmware reset can reset or reinitialize TPM-related state and cause Windows to request the BitLocker recovery key on the next start. Find the key before saving BIOS changes; do not begin a reset if you cannot access the recovery information.

Keep the manufacturer’s service manual available. It identifies the correct Setup key, explains how to remove the cover or bottom panel, and specifies battery and safety procedures for that model.

How do I enter the BIOS or System Setup program?

Restart the computer and repeatedly press the Setup key as soon as the manufacturer logo appears. The screen may call the utility BIOS Setup, UEFI Firmware Settings, or System Setup.

  1. Shut down completely. If the system is looping, hold the power button only as long as the manufacturer’s instructions permit.
  2. Turn it on and watch for the prompt naming a key such as F2, Delete, Esc, or a function key. Use the key displayed for your model rather than guessing.
  3. On the Dell models covered by Dell’s current SupportAssist article—Inspiron 14 5441, Inspiron 14 Plus 7441, Latitude 5455, and Latitude 7455—press F2 at the Dell logo.
  4. If Windows starts, restart and try again. Some systems require a wired keyboard or a function-key combination; consult the model manual for that behavior.

Do not change settings merely to explore. Photograph each page or record the original values before editing, especially storage-controller, TPM, and boot-mode options.

How do I restore safe defaults and make Windows boot again?

Loading the manufacturer’s defaults is a useful first repair after an unexplained reset, but defaults are not identical across computers. After applying them, you must check the clock, boot mode, boot order, and security settings.

  1. In Setup, choose the command labeled Load Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults, or an equivalent vendor option. Confirm the prompt.
  2. Remain in Setup after the reset and set the correct system date and time.
  3. Open the boot configuration page. Confirm that the internal drive containing Windows is present and placed ahead of removable or network devices.
  4. Check whether the firmware is set to UEFI or Legacy/CSM. Use the mode that was active when Windows was installed. If you do not know, stop and consult the service documentation or a technician rather than switching repeatedly.
  5. Review Secure Boot. On the Dell models in the cited SupportAssist procedure, the documented sequence is to load defaults, re-enter BIOS, open Boot Configuration, turn Secure Boot on, and apply the changes. Those exact labels and steps are model-specific, not universal.
  6. Choose Save Changes and Exit. Allow the computer to restart once; interrupting power while firmware writes settings can create a separate startup problem.

If Windows now loads, let it complete one normal restart and one full shutdown. Confirm that the clock remains correct and that the expected drive is still first in the boot order.

How can I tell whether UEFI or Legacy mode is wrong?

Firmware boot mode must match the partition and boot method used by the existing Windows installation. A reset that changes UEFI to Legacy, or Legacy to UEFI, can make the disk appear unbootable without deleting personal data.

When the machine was configured for UEFI

Keep UEFI selected, place the Windows Boot Manager entry for the internal drive first, and keep Secure Boot enabled if it was previously enabled and the hardware supports it. Do not select a Legacy or CSM option simply because it is visible.

When the machine was configured for Legacy

Restore Legacy or the manufacturer’s compatibility mode and the original disk order. The Windows Club guidance warns that changing a Legacy installation to UEFI without converting the installation can create a no-boot state. A conversion is a separate migration project; it is not part of fixing this warning.

If you cannot determine the original mode

Look for the exact Windows Boot Manager entry, review photographs or notes from an earlier setup, and use the model’s documentation. Avoid alternating modes after every restart, because each change can introduce another variable and may trigger BitLocker recovery.

When should I replace the CMOS battery?

A recurring wrong date or time after the computer loses external power is the strongest practical clue that the CMOS battery can no longer retain firmware settings. The battery also preserves BIOS preferences while the system is off, so a depleted cell can make the invalid-configuration warning return after every complete power loss.

The usual replacement is a CR2032 coin cell, according to Microsoft Community Support guidance, but confirm the part and access method in your computer’s service manual. Desktop and laptop designs differ: some laptops place the cell in a holder, while others use a wrapped or connector-mounted battery that should not be substituted casually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut down Windows, disconnect the AC adapter, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the battery or case cover.
  2. Ground yourself as directed by the service manual and avoid touching unrelated components.
  3. Remove the old cell using the specified release method. Note its orientation before removal.
  4. Install the approved replacement with the same orientation and reconnect any battery lead or cover.
  5. Reconnect power, enter Setup, set the date and time, restore the intended UEFI/Legacy, boot-order, and Secure Boot choices, and save.
  6. Perform a complete shutdown, remove external power briefly, and start again. A stable clock and retained settings indicate that the battery is holding configuration.

Dispose of the old coin cell through local battery-recycling channels. If the battery is soldered, difficult to reach, or the system is under warranty, have the manufacturer or a qualified technician perform the replacement.

What hardware checks are safe when the computer keeps looping?

If the computer power-cycles, loses devices, or still halts after settings are corrected, treat the problem as a possible hardware or connection fault rather than repeatedly resetting BIOS.

  • Remove USB drives, docks, external disks, memory cards, and other non-essential peripherals. Leave only the display and a known-good keyboard connected, then test startup.
  • Power down and inspect accessible internal power and data cables for a loose connection. Reseat only components the service manual identifies as user-serviceable.
  • Use the manufacturer’s onboard diagnostics, if available, to test memory, storage, and the system board. Record any diagnostic code exactly.
  • Reconnect one peripheral or component at a time after a successful boot so that a failing device can be identified.
  • Stop if the machine repeatedly loses the internal drive, emits hardware-specific alerts, or cannot remain powered on. Board-level repair and firmware flashing are model-specific procedures; a qualified technician should handle them.

Do not flash BIOS simply because the warning mentions configuration. Firmware updates require the exact model, stable power, and the manufacturer’s package. An interrupted or incorrect flash can leave the computer unable to start.

What should I do if BitLocker asks for a recovery key?

Enter the legitimate BitLocker recovery key associated with that computer. A TPM-affecting BIOS reset can make Windows require this key even when the password and drive are unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After Windows unlocks, verify that the date, boot mode, Secure Boot state, and boot order are correct. If the prompt returns on every restart, stop changing firmware settings and contact the system administrator or manufacturer; repeated TPM changes can create more recovery events.

How do I distinguish this warning from Device Manager Code 19?

The startup warning appears before the Windows logo and normally prevents the operating system from loading. Code 19 appears inside Windows beside a particular device in Device Manager and refers to incomplete or damaged registry configuration.

For Code 19, Microsoft recommends reinstalling the affected device driver or restoring a previous configuration. Those actions are appropriate only after Windows has started; they do not repair a pre-boot BIOS message. Conversely, changing BIOS boot mode will not repair a Windows registry entry.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek repair?

Arrange manufacturer or professional service when the message remains after defaults and correct boot settings, the battery replacement does not preserve the clock, diagnostics report memory/storage/system-board faults, or the computer cannot stay powered on. Bring the model number, the exact screen message, diagnostic codes, and any BitLocker recovery information.

For Dell systems, remember that the SupportAssist article updated 23 May 2026 applies specifically to Inspiron 14 5441, Inspiron 14 Plus 7441, Latitude 5455, and Latitude 7455. Other computers can use different keys, menu names, default boot modes, and Secure Boot behavior, so apply the concept—not the exact click path—to another manufacturer.

What should I remember about this Windows 10 boot error?

  • A message shown before Windows is a BIOS/UEFI configuration halt, not normally a Windows driver failure.
  • Start with Setup: load appropriate defaults, correct the clock, and verify boot order and UEFI/Legacy mode.
  • A clock that resets after shutdown strongly implicates the CMOS battery; CR2032 is a common cell, but the service manual controls the replacement procedure.
  • Keep the BitLocker recovery key available before changing TPM, Secure Boot, or other firmware settings.
  • Disconnect non-essential hardware and run built-in diagnostics when the computer loops or loses devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clear the warning without opening the computer?

Usually, yes. Enter BIOS or UEFI Setup, load the vendor’s defaults, set the clock, and restore the correct boot mode and boot order. Opening the case is generally only necessary when settings will not persist, which points toward the CMOS battery or another hardware fault.

Will loading BIOS defaults erase my Windows files?

Loading firmware defaults changes hardware settings, not the contents of the Windows drive. However, a changed boot mode, storage setting, or Secure Boot state can temporarily prevent Windows from starting, and BitLocker may request its recovery key.

Why does the error return only after I unplug the desktop?

That pattern indicates the firmware is losing retained settings while power is absent. A depleted CMOS battery is the usual explanation; replace the approved cell, then set and save the clock and boot options again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to switch from Legacy to UEFI to fix the message?

Not without confirming how Windows was installed. A Legacy installation may stop booting when firmware is switched to UEFI, so restore the original mode unless you are deliberately carrying out a documented conversion.
