If Windows displays 0x80070422 while checking for updates, the usual cause is that the Windows Update service is disabled or not running. Open the Services console, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check again. Your supplied code, 0X800704022, contains one extra trailing “2,” however. Confirm the exact characters and the operation that failed before changing anything: a longer code shown by a separate installer is not automatically the same Windows Update problem.

What does Windows Update error 0x80070422 mean?

Microsoft maps 0x80070422 to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In the Windows Update context, the service has stopped working or is not running, so Windows cannot perform the update check. The code identifies a service-state problem, not a diagnosis of malware, damaged hardware, or every possible update failure.

Microsoft’s error reference describes it this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” That explanation applies when the code appears during Windows Update. If the same-looking text appears while installing an application, first identify that installer and preserve its complete message.

Is 0X800704022 the same code as 0x80070422?

Not necessarily. 0x80070422 has eight hexadecimal digits after 0x; 0X800704022 has an additional final 2. The extra character may be a transcription or display error, but you should not silently treat a genuinely different string as the documented Windows Update code.

  • Read the code directly from the dialog, Settings page, or installation log rather than relying on memory.
  • Record the operation that failed: Windows Update, an app installation, an upgrade, or something else.
  • Copy the entire message, including any separate error number, component name, or “Error 1935” text.
  • Only use the Windows Update service repair below when the displayed code is exactly 0x80070422 and the failure occurred during Windows Update.

A historical Microsoft Q&A report contains the longer string during an Office Professional Plus 2010 installation associated with Error 1935. That user report does not establish a separate modern error definition or prove that enabling Windows Update fixes it. If your screen matches that situation, keep the full installer message and troubleshoot the installer in its own context.

How do I confirm that Windows Update is the failing operation?

Confirmation takes less than a minute and prevents applying the wrong repair to an unrelated installer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the page or program that reported the failure again and note whether it is Windows Update or another setup program.
  2. Check every character in the hexadecimal code, including the number of digits after 0x. Uppercase and lowercase letters do not change the value; an extra digit does.
  3. Write down your Windows edition and version, such as Windows 11 or Windows 10, because Microsoft’s troubleshooting entry points differ.
  4. If another program produced the message, save its log or take a screenshot before closing it. Do not substitute the Windows Update procedure simply because the numbers look similar.

How do I fix confirmed Windows Update error 0x80070422?

For a confirmed Windows Update failure, enable and start the Windows Update service through the Services console, then restart the computer.

  1. Sign in with an account that can change system services. If this is a work or school computer, your organization’s policy may prevent changes.
  2. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks.
  3. In the list, locate Windows Update. Double-click it to open Properties.
  4. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  5. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running and continue.
  6. Select Apply, then OK to close the properties window.
  7. Restart Windows. After signing in, open Settings, choose Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on some Windows 10 builds), and select Check for updates.

If the Startup type control is unavailable, Start immediately returns an error, or the setting changes back after a reboot, the service may be controlled by an administrator, security policy, or another system problem. Note the exact message; do not randomly alter other services or the registry.

Which Windows Update troubleshooter should I run?

Windows 11 users should begin with Microsoft’s current Get Help workflow. Windows 10 and Windows 11 also expose a Settings troubleshooter on releases that still show that interface.

Windows 11: Get Help

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the prompts to run the automated checks and apply any suggested repair.
  4. Restart if Get Help requests it, then return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.

Windows 10 or an available Settings route

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply the recommended action, restart if prompted, and retry the update.

Menu labels can vary by Windows release. If a route is not present, use the Get Help app or Microsoft’s current Windows update troubleshooting page instead of assuming that a missing button means the service is damaged.

What should I check if the service is running but updates still fail?

Once Windows Update is enabled and running, continue with the general checks below. A persistent failure may produce a new error code; record that new code and diagnose it separately.

Verify connectivity and account permissions

  • Confirm that the computer has a working internet connection and that other sites or services load normally.
  • Use an account with administrator access when the troubleshooter or service console asks to make system changes.
  • If the computer is managed by an employer or school, ask the administrator whether update policy, a proxy, or a maintenance window is blocking the operation.

Disconnect unnecessary external hardware

Shut down and unplug nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, and other accessories before retrying. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and hardware needed to operate the computer. Reconnect devices after the update attempt so a peripheral driver is not mistaken for the original service error.

Check date, time, and time zone

Open Windows date and time settings and make sure the clock, time zone, and automatic time synchronization are correct. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and update validation even when the Windows Update service itself is running.

Clear the Windows Update cache

Microsoft’s general procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of its cache folder, and start the service again. Deleting the contents is different from deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Open Windows Update, select Stop, and choose Apply if required.
  3. In File Explorer, go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Select the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution and delete them. If Windows reports that a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again.
  5. Return to the Windows Update properties window, select Start, then Apply and OK.
  6. Restart the computer and check for updates.

Back up important files before troubleshooting, as Microsoft recommends. The cache contains update working data, not your personal documents, but a backup gives you a recovery path if a broader system problem appears.

Review third-party drivers

Microsoft’s general guidance also calls for checking third-party drivers when update problems continue. If the failure began after adding hardware or installing a driver, note that change and use the hardware maker’s supported driver package. Do not assume that every driver problem is represented by 0x80070422; use any newer code or device-specific message as the primary clue.

How can I tell which troubleshooting branch applies?

Use the exact code, the operation that failed, and the service state to choose the next action rather than trying every repair at once.

What you confirm Best next action What not to assume
Exactly 0x80070422 while checking Windows updates; Windows Update is stopped or disabled Set the service to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check again Do not assume another installer’s identical-looking text has the same cause
Exactly 0x80070422; the service starts but the update still fails Run the Windows 11 Get Help troubleshooter or the available Settings troubleshooter, then check connectivity, time, cache, hardware, and drivers Do not treat a persistent failure as proof that the original service diagnosis was wrong; capture any new code
0X800704022 or another longer string during an installer or upgrade Preserve the complete message, identify the installer and operation, and follow that product’s installation guidance Do not apply the Windows Update repair as a guaranteed solution
Windows Update service cannot be changed on a managed PC Contact the organization’s administrator and provide the exact code and service error Do not bypass policy with registry edits or unrelated service changes

Should I edit the registry or change other services?

No. The documented first-line remedy is to check the Windows Update service and use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance. The supplied Microsoft material does not establish registry edits or disabling unrelated services as fixes for 0x80070422, and those changes can create new startup or security problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete arbitrary folders under C:Windows, disable security software permanently, or install a repair program before confirming the code and operation. If the service is controlled by policy or refuses to start, the exact error shown in its Properties window is more useful than a series of speculative changes.

Does fixing the service restore Windows 10 support?

No. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Starting the Windows Update service can repair the immediate service-state error, but it does not extend the operating system’s support lifecycle or guarantee ongoing security updates.

After the immediate problem is resolved, check which Windows edition and release the computer runs and review Microsoft’s current upgrade or lifecycle guidance. Keep this support-status question separate from the service repair: one concerns whether Windows Update can run, while the other concerns whether the operating system remains supported.

When should I ask an administrator or technician for help?

Escalate when you cannot start the service with an administrator account, the Startup type keeps reverting, the computer is managed by an organization, or the installer that produced the longer code has its own unresolved Error 1935 or setup log. Provide the exact characters, the full message, Windows version, time of failure, and the steps already attempted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run the Windows Update troubleshooter without an internet connection?

You can open the local troubleshooting interface, but many update checks and repairs require a working connection to reach Microsoft’s services. Restore reliable connectivity first, then run the troubleshooter again so it can validate the update path.

Will clearing SoftwareDistribution remove my personal files?

The procedure targets Windows Update’s working cache, not documents, photos, or installed applications. Select only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and keep a current backup before making system changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the Windows Update service stop again after I start it?

A managed-device policy, a damaged system component, or another service-level failure can undo or prevent the change. Record the service Properties error and check whether the computer is governed by work or school administration before attempting further repairs.

Does uppercase “X” in 0X800704022 matter?

No. Hexadecimal prefixes are commonly written as either 0x or 0X; capitalization does not change the value. The additional final digit does matter, so verify whether the message has eight digits after the prefix or one more.

What if the code appears only during an Office or application installation?

Treat the application’s installer and log as the primary source of evidence. Preserve the complete message and any accompanying error such as Error 1935, because the historical report containing the longer string does not define a universal Windows Update fix.
