The first fix is identifying the exact Steam product you own: Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Castlevania Advance Collection, or Castlevania Dominus Collection. They are separate PC releases, so a Dominus menu option cannot be assumed to exist in Anniversary or Advance. Once you have the right title, check that Windows and Steam detect your controller, inspect that game’s Steam Input layout, and change one reversible setting at a time. For display trouble, identify whether the symptom is a window/fullscreen problem, a wrong image shape, Dominus’s multi-screen arrangement, or slow motion tied to refresh rate. What should I check before changing a controller or display setting?

- Reconnect a wired pad firmly or charge a wireless one, then verify that Windows reacts to buttons or sticks outside the game.
- Close overlays and remappers that create a virtual controller until Steam’s own detection has been checked. A virtual device can make an apparently dead physical pad look like a layout problem.
- Write down the original display mode and refresh rate. If a change makes the picture worse, restore those values before trying another experiment.
- Back up saves and configuration files before editing anything manually. Do not download an unknown controller folder or mark game files read-only as a first-line fix.
Steam’s player documentation describes the relevant workflow—checking the controller page and then the game’s configuration—although labels and screenshots can change as the client is updated (Valve’s Steam Input guide for players).
How do I fix a controller that is not working in a Castlevania collection?
Use this order: prove that Steam sees the device, select a suitable per-game layout, test one mapping, then investigate remapping conflicts. A wrong layout does not by itself prove that the controller has failed.

1. Confirm the physical connection and Steam detection

- Open the collection’s library page, choose its controller configuration or layout command, and check which device Steam says is active. If nothing is detected, try another USB port, remove a hub, re-pair Bluetooth, or test the pad in Windows before changing in-game bindings.
- Launch the game only after Steam has a stable device entry. If the pad works in Steam’s test but not in the game, the likely fault is a layout, focus or virtual-device conflict rather than a completely disconnected controller.
2. Choose a layout made for that game and pad
Steam Input can offer a recommended layout, community layouts or a generic template for a particular game and controller. Open the game’s layout screen and inspect the bindings for directional movement, confirm/cancel, start or menu, shoulder buttons and any rewind or save controls the collection exposes. Valve documents this per-game layout model; its examples do not establish that KONAMI published an official layout for all three collections.
If a recommended layout is unavailable, choose a well-described community layout or a standard gamepad template. Read its notes before applying it, because a layout designed for a different game may put a menu command on an unexpected button.
3. Change one binding, then test menus and gameplay
Map one function at a time and return to the game after each change. Test both a menu selection and ordinary movement or attack input. This separates a single missing binding from a broader failure and leaves you with a clear rollback point.

- Menus work but gameplay does not: inspect movement, face buttons and shoulder bindings in the active layout.
- Gameplay works but menus do not: check confirm, cancel, start and pause assignments, plus whether the game window has focus.
- Nothing works after a layout change: revert to the previous layout or a standard template before trying another community configuration.
4. Test a PlayStation controller without stacking remappers
For a PlayStation pad, first let Steam Input handle it directly. Valve explains that when an external remapping tool creates an emulated Xbox 360 controller, Steam communicates with that virtual device rather than directly with the physical PS4 controller (Steam Input player documentation). That is a reason to inspect the device Steam sees, not proof that every remapper is defective.
Close the external remapper, reconnect the pad, and compare the detected device and layout. If the game works only through the virtual device, keep one remapping path and document it; alternating between two layers can produce duplicate or missing inputs.
5. Decide whether hardware replacement is justified
Replacement is reasonable only when a known-good layout and connection still leave the existing pad undetected or physically unreliable. An Xbox One controller or another Xbox-compatible XInput pad is a defensible category because Valve documents Xbox One and generic XInput Steam Input support (Valve’s Xbox One controller documentation). KONAMI also recommends a gamepad for Anniversary in its listed PC requirements.
That compatibility category is not a guarantee that a new controller will cure a game-specific bug. Complete the Steam checks first, and avoid buying a cable or pad to solve what is actually an incorrect per-game binding.
How do I fix fullscreen and image-shape problems in Dominus?
Update Dominus, then use its own pause-menu controls before editing files. KONAMI’s version 1.0.1 note says, “In the Steam version, you can now save the screen mode preferences (Window Mode / Full Screen Mode).” Version 1.0.3 says, “Added new display layouts to change the position of the different screens.” The update notes are official feature descriptions, not a promise that every black-screen, ultrawide or controller symptom is fixed.

1. Install the available updates
KONAMI’s Dominus site lists a Steam stability and bug-fix update dated October 23, 2025 (KONAMI Dominus Collection site). The listing does not establish that no later update exists elsewhere, so let Steam finish any pending download before diagnosing an older build.
2. Set Window Mode or Full Screen Mode from the pause menu
- Launch the game and open the pause menu.
- Choose the screen-mode option corresponding to Window Mode or Full Screen Mode.
- Apply the choice, return to play and close/reopen the game to confirm that the preference persists.
If the mode changes but the image remains oddly shaped, you are dealing with scaling or screen arrangement rather than the window/fullscreen state.
3. Choose a DS-screen layout
Dominus presents games designed around two Nintendo DS screens. Use the display-layout choices added in version 1.0.3 to move the different screens into a readable arrangement. Try one layout at a time and keep the one that makes both screens visible without overlapping. A layout change addresses screen position; it does not by itself repair a non-responsive controller or alter the monitor’s refresh rate.
4. Protect regional saves
KONAMI notes that Dominus saves are separate by regional version. If a save appears to have vanished after changing the game’s region, verify that you launched the same original region before assuming the file was deleted. Back up the save directory before manual configuration work.

Anniversary’s documented PC requirement lists a 1920 × 1080 monitor resolution in the Steam listing checked in 2026; that does not mean every other resolution is unsupported. A dated Steam community report describes an initial windowed launch and says Alt+Enter switches to fullscreen, but that is a reversible community observation rather than a current KONAMI patch note.

Try the reversible fullscreen switch
- Click the game window so it has focus.
- Press Alt+Enter once and wait for the display to change.
- Press it again if you need to return to a window. If nothing changes, use the game’s own display controls and do not assume the shortcut is supported in every later build.
The same report distinguishes Original, Pixel Perfect and stretched widescreen presentations. When the picture is too narrow, too wide or visibly distorted, test those built-in presentation choices rather than forcing a monitor-wide stretch. The exact ratios described in that thread are reported observations, not verified universal behavior across every included game or current build (Steam community discussion on Anniversary’s PC display behavior).
Do not import display bugs reported for Switch or PlayStation 4 into the PC procedure. If fullscreen works but the image shape is wrong, keep fullscreen selected and change only the presentation mode.
What is the correct display procedure for Advance?
No checked primary source establishes an Advance-specific controller repair or fullscreen menu path. Treat Advance as its own product: use Steam’s detection and per-game layout workflow, then adjust the display options that are actually visible in your build.
The Steam listing identifies four included games—Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow and Dracula X—along with rewind, save/load and regional ROM selection. Those features do not imply that a Dominus screen-layout control exists in Advance. If a guide tells you to open Dominus’s pause-menu layout selector, it is addressing the wrong collection.

- Record your current Windows refresh rate and display resolution.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and see whether a 60 Hz mode is available for the selected monitor.
- Select 60 Hz temporarily, launch Dominus and check whether the reported slow-motion symptom changes.
- If there is no improvement, restore the previous refresh rate. If 60 Hz is unavailable, verify the monitor input, GPU port, resolution and cable capability before buying anything.
This test concerns timing or speed symptoms. It should not be presented as a universal cable requirement, and it is distinct from a controller that is not detected or a game image that is merely stretched.

When should I contact KONAMI or Steam support?
Escalate after you can reproduce the issue with one controller, one layout and a recorded display configuration. Anniversary’s Steam technical-support guidance points unresolved product-specific issues to KONAMI. Include the exact collection and version, your controller model and connection type, the device Steam detected, window mode, refresh rate and every reversible step you tried.
- For Dominus, state the original regional version when reporting a missing save.
- Describe whether the failure affects menus, gameplay or both.
- Attach concise reproduction steps rather than a downloaded configuration from another player.
- Do not claim that a patch, replacement controller or cable fixed the problem unless your own repeatable observation supports that statement; the published notes do not provide a universal success rate or latency figure.

- Do not apply a Dominus menu path to Anniversary or Advance.

Can one Steam Input layout be shared by all three Castlevania collections?
