Fixing Wrong Game-Wiki Information: Edit, Report, or Revert?

If a game wiki contains a clear, verifiable mistake, correct the smallest affected passage when the wiki allows you to edit. If the claim is disputed, version-dependent, or you cannot edit the page, open a discussion on its Talk or Discussion page with the exact wording, game version, proposed correction, and evidence. Check that wiki’s rules first: policies differ, and a page may be protected or governed by stricter sourcing requirements.

How do I fix wrong information on a game wiki?

Use this order: identify the exact error, establish what is true for the relevant game version, read the target wiki’s editing and sourcing rules, then choose the least disruptive route. A straightforward factual correction belongs in the page itself; an uncertain or contested interpretation belongs on the article’s discussion page. If an earlier edit is plainly harmful, inspect the revision history and use Undo carefully rather than repeatedly reverting another contributor.

MediaWiki’s official editing guide documents the Edit, Edit source, preview and discussion workflows. Its reverting guide explains that “reverting means restoring a page to an earlier version from its history.” Those controls appear on many game wikis, but local rules, permissions and labels can differ.

What should I check before correcting a game-wiki page?

Do not edit from memory alone. First determine exactly what the page claims and whether the apparent error is caused by a different release, platform, game mode, demo, translation or an interpretation that the wiki has not settled.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Locate the precise claim

  • Copy or note the exact sentence, table cell, number, image caption or external link that appears wrong.
  • Record the page title and, if possible, the section heading so another editor can find the same passage quickly.
  • Check whether the wording describes a current release, an older patch, an early-access build, a demo or a platform-specific behavior.
  • Look at the page’s citations, footnotes and update notes before deciding that information is missing or incorrect.

Establish the version and context

A value that is correct in one release can be wrong in another. Write down the game version, patch number, platform, region and relevant mode when those details affect the claim. The Aground Wiki, for example, asks contributors to identify older-version or demo information rather than presenting it as current behavior; treat that as a local example, not a universal rule.

Use evidence the target wiki accepts. Depending on its policy, that may include an in-game description, developer documentation, patch notes, a reliable reference publication or another documented source. Minecraft Wiki’s rules describe verifiability through in-game testing, reliable outside sources or other means, while also directing uncertain contributors to community discussion; those rules apply to that wiki, not automatically to every game wiki. See the current policy at Minecraft Wiki’s rules page before using it as a model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the local rules

Find links labelled Rules, Editing, Sourcing, Policies, Community portal or Help. A game wiki may ban speculation, require citations for every numerical value, use a preferred template, or ask contributors to discuss major changes before publishing. Warhammer 40k Wiki is an example of a project with a stricter citation policy than some general-purpose wikis. The target wiki’s policy controls your edit.

Should I edit the page or report the error?

Choose based on evidence, controversy and permission. The safest contribution is the smallest change that makes the page accurate without rewriting surrounding material.

Situation Best route What to provide
Typo, broken link or plainly incorrect value supported by an accepted source Edit or Edit source Only the affected text, a useful edit summary and a citation if required
Two plausible interpretations, conflicting sources or uncertainty about a patch Talk or Discussion page Existing wording, proposed wording, version context and evidence
Page shows View source instead of an edit control Discussion page or the wiki’s permitted community channel Exact location, requested correction and supporting source
A recent revision is vandalism or clearly damages accurate content History, diff and Undo; use rollback only if authorized Revision to remove, reason for the revert and a check of the resulting page

This distinction follows MediaWiki’s documented editing and discussion workflow at Help:Editing pages. A discussion report is editorially useful even when the wiki does not require a particular form.

How do I make a direct correction?

Use a direct edit only when the evidence is clear and the change is within your permissions. Keep the edit narrow so reviewers can see exactly what changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the page and find the offending passage. Confirm that you are on the intended article, not a similarly named page or a redirect.
  2. Select Edit or Edit source. A visual editor presents formatted text; source editing exposes wikitext, templates and references. Use whichever the wiki provides and whichever lets you preserve the page’s existing structure.
  3. Change only what the evidence supports. Replace the incorrect number, sentence, link or caption without silently rewriting adjacent claims. Preserve templates, citation syntax and version labels unless the correction requires changing them.
  4. Add or update the source. Follow the wiki’s citation format and identify the release or date covered by the evidence. Do not cite a source that merely repeats an unsourced claim.
  5. Preview or review the change. MediaWiki’s editing help recommends previewing before saving. Check that tables, references, images, infoboxes and links still render correctly and that the correction did not alter unrelated text.
  6. Write an explanatory edit summary. State what changed and why, such as “Corrected stamina value for version 1.4.2; source: official patch notes.” A summary helps patrollers understand the edit without opening the entire diff.
  7. Publish the edit. After saving, reload the page and inspect the rendered result. If the citation, template or formatting is broken, fix that specific problem promptly rather than making a series of unrelated changes.

Some wikis require an account, a minimum edit count or additional review before publication; others permit anonymous edits. If the button is unavailable, do not try to bypass the restriction—use the discussion route described below.

How do I report a mistake if I cannot edit the page?

Open the article’s Talk or Discussion tab and start a focused topic. MediaWiki states that every article has its own talk page where readers can ask questions, make suggestions and discuss corrections; see its editing help.

  1. Open the article’s discussion page. Look for Talk, Discussion, Discuss or a speech-bubble link near the article title. If the wiki separates article and project discussions, choose the page attached to the article.
  2. Start a new topic. Use a descriptive subject such as “Incorrect drop rate in version 2.3” rather than “Wrong.”
  3. Quote the existing claim. Include the section name and enough wording for readers to locate it, but avoid copying a long passage unnecessarily.
  4. State the proposed correction. Show the replacement wording or value and explain whether the change applies to a particular patch, platform, mode or region.
  5. Explain the evidence. Link to an accepted source, identify the relevant in-game text or document, and separate confirmed facts from your interpretation.
  6. Sign and monitor the topic. In wikitext discussions, four tildes (~~~~) traditionally add a signature and timestamp; some discussion tools sign automatically. Reply to questions and update the topic if a new patch changes the answer.

Do not present the checklist above as a mandatory universal form. It is a practical way to give editors the information they need while respecting each wiki’s own discussion conventions.

Why can’t I edit this wiki page?

The page may be protected, your account may lack the required permission, or the wiki may temporarily restrict editing. A protected page can replace Edit with View source; MediaWiki documents protection and permission changes at Help:Protecting and unprotecting pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the page shows “View source”

Do not copy the source into a new page or repeatedly refresh in the hope that the restriction disappears. Use the page’s Talk or Discussion tab to request the correction, include the exact revision you want changed, and ask an editor with the necessary permission to review it. Follow any local instructions for protected pages; not every wiki has the same ticket form, administrator list or chat server.

When the source is visible but editing is disabled

Read the protection notice, which may state whether the restriction is temporary and which user group can edit. If the notice names a community venue, use that venue; otherwise, the article discussion page is the least ambiguous starting point. Keep the request neutral and evidence-based so an authorized editor can act without reconstructing the entire dispute.

How do I handle an old version, demo or platform-specific fact?

Label the scope instead of deleting information that is accurate for an older build. A page can be correct to say that an item behaved one way in a demo and another way after release, provided the headings, dates or version notes make the distinction obvious.

  • Use the exact version or patch identifier when known.
  • Say “in the demo,” “before patch 1.2,” or “on the console release” only when the source supports that boundary.
  • Keep historical information in a history or version section if the wiki uses one, rather than mixing it into the current-value paragraph.
  • Ask on the talk page when sources disagree about when a behavior changed.

Never turn an inference into a definitive statement. If the evidence shows that players observed a behavior but does not establish its cause, describe the observation and mark the cause as unknown or disputed.

How should I correct a table, image, link or template?

Match the correction to the object that is wrong, because a visible error may be generated elsewhere.

Tables and infoboxes

Check whether the value is typed in the article or pulled from a template or data module. Correct the source of the value once, rather than overriding one display cell and leaving the underlying data wrong. Preview the page and at least one related page if the template is shared.

Images and captions

Verify that the image depicts the stated version, item or character. If only the caption is wrong, edit the caption; if the file itself is mislabeled, use the file page’s discussion or maintenance process instead of replacing it with an unrelated image.

Links and redirects

Open the destination before changing a link. A redirect may be intentional, and a page move may require updating several links. Repair the dead or misleading target and preserve anchors, templates and citation references.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Templates and modules

Shared templates can affect dozens or hundreds of pages. If the correction is not obviously safe, report it first with examples of affected pages. A local article edit is preferable when only one page contains the error.

How do I undo a harmful or incorrect prior edit?

Use History to identify the revision, open its diff, and choose Undo when the problem is a specific edit. MediaWiki says Undo attempts to remove one edit while preserving later work, although it can fail when revisions conflict; see Help:Reverting.

  1. Open History. Locate the revision that introduced the vandalism or factual error.
  2. Open the diff. Confirm exactly what that revision changed and whether later contributors made constructive edits after it.
  3. Select Undo if available. Review the automatically generated inverse change before saving.
  4. Resolve conflicts manually. If Undo would remove later useful work, edit only the damaged passage and retain the later additions.
  5. Add a reason. Explain the removal, such as “Reverted unsourced change to enemy health; retained later citation.”
  6. Check the result and discuss good-faith disputes. If the edit may reflect a real disagreement, move the conversation to the talk page instead of repeating reversions.

Undo versus rollback

Rollback is a separate, more limited tool generally available only to authorized users and often intended for obvious vandalism or spam. Do not assume that having an Undo link grants rollback permission, and do not use either tool merely because you dislike another editor’s interpretation.

What if someone reverts my correction?

First inspect the new diff and the edit summary. The revert may identify a version mismatch, a missing citation or a local rule you overlooked. If the issue is unresolved, stop reverting and open a talk-page topic that compares the competing wording and evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the discussion about the claim, not the contributor. Provide the game version, platform or mode, accepted sources and the smallest proposed change. If a moderator or administrator closes the discussion, follow that decision and use the wiki’s stated appeal process rather than moving the dispute to unrelated pages.

What evidence makes a correction credible?

Strong reports let another editor verify the claim without repeating your entire investigation. Include the source type, scope and location of the relevant information.

  • Version identity: exact release, patch, build, platform or mode.
  • Claim location: article title, section, table row, template or file page.
  • Current wording: the sentence or value that needs review.
  • Replacement wording: a concise version that avoids unsupported conclusions.
  • Source: an accepted citation, official document, in-game text or other evidence permitted by the wiki.
  • Scope and limits: what the evidence confirms and what remains uncertain.

Do not cite a search-result snippet as if it were the full source, and do not copy a claim from another wiki without checking its provenance. If a game-specific policy page is difficult to access, treat its visible summary cautiously and verify the rule on the target wiki before relying on it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What common mistakes should I avoid?

  • Editing before checking the version: an apparent error may be historical or platform-specific.
  • Replacing a disputed claim with your preferred interpretation: report the disagreement and cite both sides when the evidence is inconclusive.
  • Changing too much at once: broad rewrites make review and rollback harder.
  • Leaving no edit summary: unexplained changes are more likely to be questioned or reverted.
  • Ignoring templates: a value may be generated from shared data rather than the visible article text.
  • Reverting repeatedly: a good-faith content dispute belongs on the discussion page.
  • Assuming every wiki has identical procedures: permissions, citation standards and contact channels vary.
  • Removing old information without labeling it: preserve useful history when the wiki documents versions separately.

Where is the talk page on a game wiki?

Look for a tab or link labelled Talk, Discussion, Discuss or “article discussion” beside the page title. On some skins it appears in a top navigation menu or behind a speech-bubble icon. If you cannot find it, open the wiki’s Help or Community portal and search for its discussion-page instructions; do not create a new article just to report an error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I write a clear correction request?

A short, structured request is easier to approve than a general complaint. You can adapt this pattern in the wiki’s own markup:

Subject: [page] — [specific claim] in [version]

Existing wording: “…”
Proposed wording: “…”

Why: [what the game or accepted source shows]
Scope: [platform, mode, region or patch]
Source: [permitted citation or link]

Replace every field with real information; do not leave template brackets in a published post. If the wiki’s discussion tool has a form, use its fields instead and follow its signing convention.

How do I decide whether a correction is ready to publish?

Use a final pass before saving or posting:

  • The claim is tied to a specific game version or clearly marked as version-independent.
  • The evidence meets the target wiki’s sourcing rules.
  • The proposed change is limited to the demonstrated error.
  • Templates, references, links and formatting have been previewed.
  • The edit summary or discussion post explains the reason and scope.
  • You have chosen discussion instead of a direct edit if reasonable editors could disagree.

Following that sequence protects both accuracy and the wiki’s revision history. It also gives an authorized editor enough context to make a protected-page correction without guessing at your intent.

How we distinguish a correction from an edit war

A correction is evidence-led, scoped and open to review. An edit war is a cycle of competing saves or reversions in which participants stop addressing the underlying evidence. MediaWiki’s reverting guidance recommends discussing uncertain reversions, fixing only the problematic part where possible and explaining why a revert was made; consult the official guidance when a dispute escalates.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When consensus is not immediate, leave the page in the last stable, sourced state if possible, document the competing claims on the talk page and wait for the wiki’s normal community process. Accuracy is the goal; winning the revision count is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I report an error without creating an account?

That depends on the individual wiki’s permissions and discussion settings. If anonymous discussion is disabled, you will need to follow its account or contact procedure; do not create duplicate pages or bypass a protection rule.

Should I cite a game video as proof of a wiki correction?

Only if the target wiki accepts that kind of source and the video clearly identifies the relevant version and conditions. A clip can demonstrate an observed behavior, but it may not establish a general rule or explain why the behavior occurs.

What should I do when the source and the game contradict each other?

Report the conflict rather than silently choosing one. Quote the source, identify the version, describe the in-game behavior and ask editors to determine whether the page should document a discrepancy, a bug or a later change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a protected page be corrected immediately?

You cannot bypass protection through the normal editor. Post a precise request on the article’s discussion page or use the contact route named in the protection notice, then let an authorized editor review the evidence.
