Flappy Bird’s comeback was announced in 2024 by the Flappy Bird Foundation, not by original creator Dong Nguyen. The Foundation says it acquired the game’s trademark from Gametech Holdings; Nguyen has publicly said he had nothing to do with the revival and “did not sell anything.” Its official Telegram channel currently points Android players to the Epic Games Store and links to a Telegram game bot, but the status of previously announced iOS and browser releases is not confirmed.
What is returning?
The Flappy Bird Foundation announced a revival in September 2024, about a decade after the original game was removed from the App Store and Google Play in February 2014. The new project is presented by the Foundation as a return of the Flappy Bird game and brand, but it is not a continuation made with Nguyen’s participation.
At the time of the announcement, the Foundation described plans for browser and mobile releases, including native iOS and Android apps planned for 2025. It also outlined additions such as new modes, characters, progression, and multiplayer challenges. Those were announced plans, not confirmation that every version launched or remains available.
Who owns the rights, and what did Nguyen say?
The Foundation’s account, posted on its official Telegram channel, says the U.S. trademark registration was granted to Mobile Media Partners in 2018, acquired by Gametech Holdings in 2021, and transferred to the Foundation in August 2024. The Foundation also says it received exclusive rights to Piou Piou vs Cactus from its developer Kek, whom it describes as a founding member. Read the Foundation’s account of the rights history.

That is the Foundation’s description of the trademark and rights chain; it should not be confused with an endorsement by Nguyen. TechCrunch reported on September 15, 2024, that Nguyen said he had nothing to do with the revival, “did not sell anything,” and did not support crypto. He should not be described as a participant in, or supporter of, the new game. TechCrunch’s report on Nguyen’s comments.
Nguyen’s original decision to remove the game came after its unexpected popularity. In 2014, he told Engadget that it had become an “addictive product” and said, “To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.” The quote explains his decision at the time; it does not describe the Foundation’s later project. Engadget’s 2014 report.

Is this the same game as the 2014 original?
It is a revival using the Flappy Bird name and trademark, promoted by a new foundation. Nguyen’s public comments make clear that he is not involved. The Foundation says its mission is “to preserve and foster the Flappy Bird game and legacy for the community”; that is the organization’s stated aim, not evidence of the original creator’s approval. The 2024 announcement also described planned new modes and other additions, so the revival should not automatically be treated as an identical re-release of the 2014 app.
