The incident followed a report concerning a user-created page related to Funko Fusion. Itch.io said the report falsely characterized the page as phishing and described the enforcement system behind it as “trash AI-powered” reporting.
Funko and BrandShield disputed the platform-wide responsibility. Funko said it asked for action against a specific page that allegedly imitated the Funko Fusion development website—not against the entire itch.io platform. The available evidence therefore supports a narrower conclusion: a page-level dispute appears to have escalated into a temporary parent-domain suspension, but the exact chain of decisions remains contested.

What happened to itch.io?
For several hours on December 9, 2024, the regular itch.io domain stopped working normally. Users could not reliably reach storefront pages, creator profiles, libraries, or hosted game files through the platform’s main address.

The site was reportedly back online by that morning, and there is no evidence in the available reporting that itch.io’s database, hosted games, or user purchases were erased. Reports also indicated that the service could still be reached directly by IP address during the incident, pointing to a domain or DNS-level problem rather than the destruction of itch.io’s underlying servers.

Itch.io said the domain had been placed on serverHold by its registrar, iwantmyname. That status is materially different from removing one game page or suspending one creator account: it can prevent a domain from resolving normally, making an entire platform appear to be offline.
Ars Technica reported that the domain-level outage followed an abuse or phishing report associated with BrandShield, a brand-protection service used by Funko.
The short version
- A user-created page related to Funko Fusion was reportedly identified as a potential impersonation or phishing threat.
- Itch.io said it removed the page and disabled the associated account after receiving reports.
- According to itch.io, reports also reached its host and domain registrar.
- The platform’s founder said the registrar later placed the parent domain on
serverHold. - Funko said its request targeted only the specific page, not all of itch.io.
- The domain recovered later on December 9.
What content allegedly triggered the report?
According to Corcoran’s account, the disputed material was a user-created fan page associated with Funko Fusion. It reportedly included links to the official website and screenshots. Funko described the page as imitating the game’s official development site.

That description does not establish that the page was a credential-stealing phishing site. It also does not prove that the page was entirely harmless. The public reporting does not include a definitive copy of the original report, the exact URL, or enough evidence to independently assess every trademark, copyright, impersonation, or security issue it may have raised.
The distinction matters. A fan page, an imitation of an official site, a trademark dispute, and a phishing site are not interchangeable categories. The available accounts indicate that the complaint was handled as a phishing, fraud, or abuse matter rather than as an ordinary copyright takedown.
A disputed timeline
- Before December 9: Itch.io says it received reports through its hosting provider, Linode, and its registrar, iwantmyname.
- After receiving notice: According to itch.io, the platform removed the disputed page and disabled the associated account. It also replied to the reports.
- December 9, 2024: The itch.io domain became inaccessible. Corcoran said the registrar control panel showed
serverHold. - Later that morning: The site returned online.
- Afterward: Funko and BrandShield said they had sought action against the particular page or subdomain, not the whole platform.
The final two steps in itch.io’s account are not fully independently documented. Corcoran suspected that the registrar’s automated process failed to close the case after the page had been removed, but the available sources do not establish whether the final action was automated, manual, or a combination of both.
What does serverHold mean?
serverHold is a domain status that can prevent normal DNS resolution. In practical terms, a browser may be unable to find the site even though the origin servers and stored data remain operational.

That makes it very different from:
- Removing one page or game listing;
- Disabling one user account;
- Suspending a hosting account;
- Deleting a database;
- Experiencing a routine server outage; or
- Making a DNS configuration error.

The entire platform becomes inaccessible
The first part of that sequence is broadly consistent with the public accounts. Itch.io’s explanation of the case remaining open and leading to the domain suspension should be treated as an allegation, because iwantmyname’s independent explanation is not clearly documented in the available coverage.
What role did BrandShield play?
Itch.io identified BrandShield as the “AI-powered” brand-protection service involved in the report. BrandShield’s reported position was that its platform detected a potential threat on an itch.io subdomain and provided analysis or reporting.
That supports describing the system as AI-assisted, automated, or AI-powered brand monitoring. It does not show that an AI system independently made the final decision to suspend the entire itch.io domain. The public record does not establish which steps were automated, whether a human reviewed the report, or whether the registrar acted on an automated timer, a human decision, or both.
BrandShield’s own materials describe its brand-protection capabilities, but those materials do not resolve what happened in this particular case. The original detection and abuse report are not publicly available in the sources reviewed.
What did Funko say?
Funko said it respects indie games and developers and that one of its brand-protection partners identified a page imitating the Funko Fusion development website. Funko said the request was directed at that specific page and that it did not ask for the entire itch.io platform to be taken down.
Funko also said it was pleased that itch.io had returned online and had contacted the platform. Its statement narrows the company’s claimed responsibility, but it does not answer every unresolved question: why the matter was characterized as phishing or fraud, whether BrandShield contacted multiple infrastructure providers, whether Funko reviewed the report before submission, or why the parent domain was affected instead of only the relevant page or subdomain.
Calling the incident “Funko took down itch.io” is therefore too definitive. It reflects itch.io’s criticism of the outcome, but not Funko’s stated intent.

What did itch.io claim?
Corcoran said itch.io received reports through Linode and iwantmyname, removed the disputed page, disabled its account, and communicated that the content had been taken down. He said Linode closed its case, while the registrar allegedly did not respond before the domain was placed on serverHold.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the incident matters beyond itch.io
The scope of the remedy did not match the alleged target
The central failure mode appears to be a scope mismatch. The reported target was allegedly one page or subdomain, while the practical enforcement action affected the registrable domain, itch.io, and therefore a large platform hosting unrelated creators and games.
A content host may be able to remove a particular page. A domain registrar has power over the address that users need to reach the whole service. When an abuse workflow moves from page-level moderation to registrar-level action, the potential blast radius becomes much larger.
Phishing classifications can trigger faster escalation
Copyright and trademark disputes commonly lead to page-specific moderation, host complaints, or legal notices. Phishing and fraud reports may receive faster infrastructure-level attention because they are treated as security risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat speed can be valuable when a domain is actively stealing credentials. It can also be dangerous when an automated system mistakes fan content, imitation, or a brand dispute for a threat requiring parent-domain suspension. The incident does not prove that all AI brand-protection systems are unreliable; it demonstrates why classification, scope, review, and appeals matter.
Shared-domain platforms have a structural vulnerability
Platforms that allow many users to publish under one parent domain face a difficult distinction:

- A complaint may concern
creator.itch.ioor a particular page path. - Automated systems may treat evidence involving that hostname as evidence about
itch.io. - Registrars may act on the registrable domain rather than on an individual page.
- One disputed upload can consequently interrupt access for thousands of unrelated creators.
The exact hostname and original report would be essential to evaluating this incident fully, but they have not been made public in the available reporting.
What the incident does—and does not—establish
- It does establish: itch.io went offline temporarily on December 9, 2024, and the outage was connected in public reporting to a Funko-related abuse dispute.
- It does not establish: that Funko directly ordered a platform-wide shutdown.
- It does establish: itch.io said its domain showed
serverHold. - It does not establish: that an AI system alone made the final suspension decision.
- It does establish: itch.io said the disputed page was removed and the account disabled.
- It does not establish: that the page contained no misleading, infringing, or impersonating material.
- It does establish: the site recovered within hours.
- It does not establish: permanent data loss, a hack, or the deletion of user purchases and games.
Practical lessons for developers
The outage was temporary, but it illustrates why creators should not treat a single marketplace as their only copy of a project or their only communication channel.
- Keep offline and cloud backups of builds, source files, artwork, metadata, and store-page text.
- Export purchase, customer-support, and download records where the platform’s terms and privacy obligations allow it.
- Maintain an independent website, mailing list, or community channel.
- Keep alternate instructions available for obtaining updates if the marketplace is temporarily unreachable.
- Do not store the only copy of a release, press kit, or critical contact information on one platform.
Practical lessons for platforms and registrars
This incident also suggests safeguards for services that handle user-generated content and abuse reports:
- Require reports to identify the exact URL, hostname, account, or asset at issue.
- Prefer page- or subdomain-level action where the evidence concerns only one user publication.
- Require human review before suspending a parent domain serving unrelated users.
- Automatically update or close registrar cases when a host removes the reported content.
- Provide a clear escalation and appeal path with emergency contact details.
- Preserve access to creator dashboards, backups, and downloads during a domain dispute where security conditions permit.
These are safeguards suggested by the incident, not documented steps that itch.io or iwantmyname necessarily adopted.
What remains unknown?
The public accounts leave several important questions unanswered:
- What exactly did the original BrandShield report say?
- Did it explicitly request action against the parent domain?
- Was the report generated entirely automatically?
- Did Funko review the report before it was sent?
- Why did iwantmyname place
itch.ioonserverHold? - Was the final registrar action automated, manual, or both?
- Did any users suffer harm beyond temporary loss of access?
- Did the involved companies change their procedures afterward?
Until those records are public, the most accurate description is not “AI independently shut down itch.io” or “Funko deleted the platform.” It is that a disputed page-level report appears to have entered an automated or semi-automated abuse workflow, and the resulting registrar action temporarily affected the entire domain.
