What rainbow2.dll is
rainbow2.dll is the Rainbow VST synth plugin from Big Tick. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or device driver.
If Windows or a music program says rainbow2.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the usual problem is that the older Big Tick Rainbow installation is missing, moved, quarantined, or incompatible with the host scanning it.

Rainbow was designed to work as either a standalone Windows synthesizer or a VST 2.0 plugin inside compatible music software. Its original documentation identifies this default program folder:

The installer also asks where your VST plugins are stored and copies the plugin into that selected folder.

The safest repair is to restore Rainbow from its original installer or a verified backup, select the VST folder used by your DAW, and rescan plugins. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying it into System32.
File identification
| Item | Verified information |
|---|---|
| File | rainbow2.dll |
| Description | Rainbow VST synth plugin |
| Application | Big Tick Rainbow |
| Publisher | Big Tick |
| Type | Third-party application/plugin file |
| Format | VST 2.0 plugin |
| Known version, size, and architecture | Not reliably established for every build |
Rainbow is a discontinued legacy Big Tick plugin. That matters because there may not be a current official installer available from the vendor, and modern DAWs may no longer support every old VST build. Do not treat version or architecture details reported by generic DLL indexes as authoritative.
Why the error appears
The exact wording can vary:
rainbow2.dll not foundThe file Rainbow2.dll is missingFailed to load rainbow2.dllError loading rainbow2.dllThe specified module could not be foundThe program can't start because Rainbow2.dll is missing from your computer
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If the file is genuinely absent, Rainbow was probably uninstalled, incompletely installed, deleted, or moved. If the file exists but the DAW cannot load it, the host may be scanning the wrong folder, blocking the plugin, using an incompatible architecture, or reporting a missing dependency of the plugin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Work through the following fixes in order.
Fix 1: Restore Rainbow from its original installer
This is the most likely and safest solution.
If you still have the installer
- Close the DAW, VST host, and Rainbow.
- Locate your original Big Tick Rainbow installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup screens.
- Keep the default Rainbow program directory unless you have a specific reason to change it:
text
C:Program FilesBig TickRainbow2
- When the installer asks for a VST plugins directory, select the folder your DAW actually scans.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open the DAW and run its full plugin rescan.
The exact rescan control depends on the DAW. Look under Preferences, Settings, Plug-ins, or VST Plug-in Manager for options such as Rescan, Rescan all, or Clear cache and rescan.
If you have a verified backup
Restore the complete Rainbow installation rather than copying only a DLL from an unknown source. Preserve the original folder structure and any companion files installed with Rainbow.
If the backup contains rainbow2.dll, note its folder before restoring it. A VST host normally needs the folder containing the plugin added to its VST2 search paths. It does not normally need the file placed in a Windows system directory.
Check that the file exists
After installation or restoration:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for:
text
rainbow2.dll
- Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Confirm that it is inside the Rainbow installation or a deliberate VST plugins folder.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab if available.
If the file is present but the DAW still reports it missing, continue with the plugin-path checks below.

Do not substitute a random DLL download. Big Tick has discontinued Rainbow, and a current official Rainbow download is not reliably established. Search your own archived installers, old system backups, disk images, or another computer where you personally installed the plugin.
If no trustworthy installer or backup exists, there may be no safe way to reconstruct the original plugin from the filename alone.
Fix 2: Point the DAW to the correct VST folder
A common mistake is restoring the file correctly but leaving the DAW pointed at a different folder.
Find the current file
Search all local drives for rainbow2.dll. If Windows finds it:

- Right-click the result.
- Select Open file location.
- Copy or record the folder path from the File Explorer address bar.
Do not move the file yet.
Add the folder to the host
In your DAW:
- Open Preferences or Settings.
- Open the Plug-ins, VST, or Plugin Manager section.
- Find the VST2 search-path list.
- Add the folder containing
rainbow2.dll. - Apply the change.
- Start a full rescan.
Older music applications may use a custom VST folder instead of a standard location. A documented Rainbow installation could place its plugin in a user-selected VST directory, so do not assume that the program folder is also the scan folder.
Confirm the result
A successful scan should show Rainbow in the host’s plugin list, synth browser, or instrument menu. Load it in a blank project before opening an older project that previously reported the error.
If the scan log says the plugin was skipped, failed validation, or could not be loaded, continue to the compatibility and dependency sections.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another endpoint-protection product may have removed or quarantined an old plugin.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to Rainbow,
rainbow2.dll, or the folder where you installed it.
Do not restore the file automatically just because the filename matches. First verify that the file came from your original Big Tick installer or a backup you trust. An unknown DLL from a download site is not made safe by being placed in a familiar folder.
If the file is confirmed as yours and the detection is a false positive, follow the options shown in Windows Security to restore or allow it. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. If that happens, stop and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly bypassing it.
After a verified restoration:
- Confirm that
rainbow2.dllis back in its intended folder. - Open the DAW.
- Rescan the VST2 path.
- Check whether the plugin now loads.
If protection software continues to block the file, preserve the detection name and ask the security vendor or your administrator to assess it.
Fix 4: Check old VST and host compatibility
Rainbow is an old VST 2.0 plugin. A modern host may be unable to load it even when the file is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe public evidence does not reliably establish one architecture for every Rainbow build. Do not assume that every copy is 32-bit or 64-bit merely from its filename.
Check the host architecture
Look in the DAW’s About window or installation details for whether it is running as 32-bit or 64-bit. Some hosts display this in Help > About. Others show it in the application folder or installer.
Check the plugin file
- Right-click
rainbow2.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open Details.
- Record any product, file, or version information shown.
The Details tab may not identify the architecture. If it does not, use the DAW’s plugin scan log or a trusted dependency diagnostic tool rather than guessing.

If the host is 64-bit only
A 32-bit Rainbow build may require a trusted bridging solution or an older compatible host. A bridge is not the same as copying the DLL to another Windows folder. Follow the bridge vendor’s installation instructions and point it at the original VST folder.

If a compatible older host loads Rainbow but your modern DAW does not, the problem is compatibility rather than a missing Windows file.
If the host rejects the plugin
Read the exact scan-log reason. Messages such as wrong architecture, failed validation, unsupported plugin, or crashed during scan indicate a host-compatibility problem. Reinstalling Visual C++ or running System File Checker will not convert an old VST into a modern plugin.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing plugin from a missing dependency
The message The specified module could not be found can appear even when rainbow2.dll is visible in the correct folder. Windows may instead be unable to find a separate library required by Rainbow.
To investigate:
- Confirm that
rainbow2.dllexists. - Open the DAW’s plugin scan log.
- Look for the full error surrounding Rainbow.
- Use the DAW’s built-in diagnostics, if available.
- Check whether other old plugins fail in the same way.
Only install a Microsoft runtime when dependency evidence points to one. Do not treat Visual C++ Redistributable as the normal fix for an absent Rainbow plugin.

- Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installation troubleshooting
Microsoft states that the package architecture must match the application architecture. Older Visual C++ versions can remain installed side by side, so do not remove existing versions merely because you install a supported package.
After installing the required Microsoft package:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the DAW.
- Clear its plugin cache if it provides that option.
- Rescan the VST2 folder.
- Test Rainbow in a blank project.
If the plugin itself is absent, a runtime installation will not recreate rainbow2.dll.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
This is a low-probability fix because rainbow2.dll belongs to Big Tick Rainbow, not Windows. Use DISM and SFC only when you also have wider Windows symptoms, such as damaged system features, repeated component errors, or unrelated built-in applications failing.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Rescan the Rainbow VST folder in the DAW.
Use the official Microsoft DISM and SFC instructions if either command reports an error.
SFC cannot normally restore a discontinued third-party plugin. If the commands report that Windows repaired files but Rainbow is still missing, return to the Rainbow installer, VST path, and compatibility checks.
Manually hunting component versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues, while repairs require the full version; reinstalling Rainbow remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that plugin.
Fix 7: Consider a recent system change
Use System Restore only when Rainbow worked before a known Windows update, application installation, driver change, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not guarantee recovery of a discontinued plugin and may not restore personal files. Read the confirmation screen carefully. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the procedure and limitations.
After Windows restarts, check whether the Rainbow file and its VST path are still present. If not, restore Rainbow from the original installer or backup.
What not to do
Do not copy the file to System32
Do not copy rainbow2.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Rainbow is a plugin, not a normal Windows shared component. A DAW discovers VST2 plugins through its configured plugin paths, not by searching Windows system directories.
Copying the file can create duplicate versions, confuse future scans, and leave the original installation broken.
Do not download a random replacement DLL
Generic DLL download sites may provide the wrong build, altered content, incorrect architecture, or malware. A replacement that has the right filename may still fail because the DAW needs the complete Rainbow installation or a separate dependency.
The safe sources are your original Big Tick installer, a verified personal backup, or a known-good installation media source that you can authenticate. There is no reliable evidence of a current official Rainbow download that should be treated as an automatic recommendation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A VST2 plugin is normally discovered through the host’s plugin folder.
Do not run:
regsvr32 rainbow2.dll
A successful registration would not make a VST2 plugin appear in the DAW’s plugin list. Microsoft documents the regsvr32 command, but its existence does not mean every DLL should be registered.

Do not remove drivers or enable random Windows features
Device Manager and Windows Features are not normal repair locations for this file. Rainbow is not identified as a device driver or Windows optional component.
Use Device Manager only if the error appeared alongside a separate audio-device problem, such as a missing sound device or failed audio driver. Use Windows Features only when another application specifically identifies a missing Windows feature. Neither will recreate rainbow2.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Optional driver check for separate audio problems
A driver update is relevant only if the DAW also cannot see your audio interface, produces no sound, or reports an audio-device failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Reopen the DAW and select the correct audio device.
Do not mistake an audio-driver problem for a missing Rainbow plugin. Keep the two diagnoses separate.
Manually checking every audio device and guessing which driver is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace restoring the Big Tick plugin.
If Rainbow still will not load
Record these details before seeking further help:
- Windows version
- DAW or VST host name and version
- Whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Full path to
rainbow2.dll - File Properties details
- Exact plugin scan message
- Antivirus detection name, if any
- Whether other VST2 plugins load
- Whether Rainbow worked on this computer previously
This information separates four different problems: an absent file, a wrong VST path, a quarantined file, and a present plugin with a missing dependency or incompatible architecture.
FAQ
Is rainbow2.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it ships with Windows. It belongs to Big Tick Rainbow and should be restored through the Rainbow installation.
Is Rainbow a VST plugin or a standalone program?
Both. Rainbow was designed as a standalone synthesizer and as a VST 2.0 plugin for compatible hosts.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix rainbow2.dll?
Not for a simple missing-file error. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only if dependency diagnostics show that Rainbow exists but requires a missing Microsoft runtime.
Why does the DAW say the module is missing when the DLL is visible?
The message can refer to a dependency of rainbow2.dll, not necessarily the plugin itself. It can also indicate an architecture or compatibility failure.
Can I register rainbow2.dll with regsvr32?
Generally no. VST2 plugins are normally found through the DAW’s VST path, not Windows DLL registration.
Can SFC restore Rainbow?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not discontinued third-party plugins.
What if I cannot find an original installer?
Do not use an arbitrary DLL download. Search verified backups or old installation media. Because Big Tick Rainbow is discontinued, a safe current official download may not be available.
What is the final safe repair?
Restore Rainbow from a trustworthy original source, place or install it in the intended VST folder, configure the DAW to scan that folder, and rescan. If the exact build is incompatible with the host, use a compatible host or a trusted bridging arrangement rather than changing Windows system folders.
