Fortnite Error 14 is not a single, universally defined Fortnite diagnosis. The exact message and symptom matter: the failure may involve damaged game files, Easy Anti-Cheat, the Epic Games Launcher, Windows security software, a drive, or an Epic service outage. Start by checking Epic’s server status, then use the least destructive fixes below rather than reinstalling immediately.
This guide is primarily for Fortnite running through the Epic Games Launcher on Windows PC. Do not apply its Windows-only file and Easy Anti-Cheat steps to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or mobile.

First, identify which “Error 14” you have
“Error 14” is not enough information by itself. Copy the complete error text before trying to fix it. Note whether:
- Fortnite reaches the title screen or fails before opening.
- Epic Games Launcher says Running but no game window appears.
- Easy Anti-Cheat displays the error.
- The problem began after a Fortnite, Windows, or graphics-driver update.
- Other Epic Games titles are affected.
Epic’s current Fortnite support material covers related launch, corrupted-file, launcher, and anti-cheat failures rather than defining one universal Fortnite error called simply Error 14. An official Epic page for “Error 14” found in support results concerns Fall Guys, not Fortnite.

Quick fixes to try first
1. Check whether Epic is having an outage
Open Epic Games Public Status and check Fortnite, login, Epic Online Services, and matchmaking. If several services are impaired or other players are reporting the same problem, wait for the incident to be resolved. Reinstalling Fortnite will not repair a server-side outage.
If Fortnite works through a mobile hotspot but not your home connection, the issue is more likely network-specific. Restart the router only for connection, authentication, or matchmaking symptoms—not as the first response to a local launcher or anti-cheat failure.
2. Fully exit and restart Windows
- Exit Fortnite.
- Right-click the Epic Games Launcher icon in the system tray and choose Exit.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and try Fortnite again.
This closes stuck launcher, Fortnite, and anti-cheat processes. It is a useful first test, not a permanent repair and not a guarantee that every cache has been cleared.

3. Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator
- Close the launcher completely.
- Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator and approve the Windows prompt.
- Launch Fortnite.
Epic documents elevated permissions as a possible solution for launch and download problems. If this works, permissions or security software may be blocking the installation. Use it as a troubleshooting test rather than assuming Fortnite must always run with administrator privileges. See Epic’s administrator instructions.
4. Verify Fortnite’s files
Verification is the most important low-risk repair. It compares the installed files with the expected version and replaces files that are missing or different. Epic says this does not affect saved data.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite and click its three-dot menu.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Allow the scan and any replacement download to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test Fortnite.
The scan can take time, particularly on a hard drive or after a major update. Do not interrupt it unless it is clearly frozen for an extended period. Menu names can vary slightly by launcher version or language. Epic’s detailed instructions are in its Fortnite file-verification guide.
If Verify is unavailable, Epic may not recognize the installation correctly, Fortnite may have been installed through another platform, or the launcher may need repair. Do not delete the game folder just because the button is missing.
Core Windows PC repairs
Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
A damaged launcher web cache can cause display, login, and launcher-operation problems.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher from the system tray.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete only the cache folders that exist:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Reopen the launcher and test Fortnite.
Do not delete the entire %localappdata% directory or Fortnite’s installed game directory. See Epic’s cache-clearing instructions.

Repair Easy Anti-Cheat when the message mentions it
Prioritize this fix if the full message mentions Easy Anti-Cheat, Fortnite appears to run without opening, or the failure is clearly an anti-cheat launch problem. This does not establish that every Error 14 is an Easy Anti-Cheat error.
- In Epic Games Launcher, open Library.
- Use Fortnite’s three-dot menu and choose Manage > Open Install Location.
- Open
FortniteGameBinariesWin64EasyAntiCheat. - Use the Easy Anti-Cheat setup utility if it is present, select the current game, and choose Repair Service.
Epic also documents a shortcut method when required: right-click the Easy Anti-Cheat executable, create a shortcut, open the shortcut’s Properties, and add a space followed by repair to the end of the Target field. Apply the change, run the shortcut, approve the repair, restart Windows, and launch Fortnite. The exact executable name and shortcut behavior can vary by installation. Use Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat repair guide.
Recommended Free Tools
If Easy Anti-Cheat is missing, verify Fortnite first. Never download replacement DLLs from unofficial sites, disable anti-cheat, or use a bypass.
Remove Fortnite’s local configuration folder
For some Fortnite errors, Epic recommends removing local configuration data and then verifying the installation.
- Close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete
%localappdata%FortniteGame. - Restart Windows.
- Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator.
- Go to Library > Fortnite > three dots > Manage > Verify.
This is the local data folder—not the installed Fortnite directory. Settings, shader caches, and other local data may be regenerated or reset. Use this after ordinary verification and cache clearing, not as the first step. See Epic’s ESP-error guidance.
Storage, security, drivers, and background software
Check free space and drive health
Epic’s ESP guidance recommends at least 10 GB of free space on the drive where Fortnite is installed. This is a troubleshooting recommendation, not Fortnite’s total installation size. Updates may need additional working space.

Check that the drive is healthy, has free space, and is not reporting Windows disk errors. Reinstalling to another healthy drive becomes reasonable if corruption continues.
Test Windows Security or antivirus interference
Epic recommends adding the official Fortnite installation folder as a Windows Security exclusion for certain cases where the launcher says Fortnite is running but no window opens:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
- Under Exclusions, choose Add or remove exclusions.
- Add only the Fortnite installation folder.
Exclusions reduce protection. Do not exclude an entire drive or %localappdata%. If the issue began after installing antivirus software, use its documented game mode or exception feature. Remove the exclusion or restore normal protection if it does not help; never leave antivirus permanently disabled.

Update or roll back graphics drivers
Install graphics drivers through the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel channel, then restart Windows. If Error 14 began immediately after a driver update, use Windows or the GPU manufacturer’s supported rollback method. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. No particular driver version is established as a universal Fortnite Error 14 fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIsolate background conflicts
Temporarily close overlay software, hardware-monitoring or overclocking tools, screen recorders, VPNs, proxy software, other game launchers, and aggressive firewall or antivirus utilities. These programs can interfere with game processes or inject overlays.
The goal is isolation, not permanently disabling every background application. If a clean boot resolves the problem, re-enable items in groups until you identify the conflict.

| Fortnite never opens and the launcher shows Error 14 | Check server status, restart Windows, run the launcher as administrator, verify files, clear the cache, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, then test security and background-app conflicts. |
| The message mentions Easy Anti-Cheat | Verify files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, check security exclusions, and close overlay or process-modifying software. |
| Launcher says “Running” but no window appears | Verify files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, test a narrowly scoped Fortnite security exclusion, then continue with broader troubleshooting. |
| Error appears during download or update | Check free space, run the launcher as administrator, clear its cache, check antivirus and firewall interference, and inspect the drive. |
| Only your home network fails | Test another network, then investigate the router, VPN, proxy, DNS, or firewall. A router restart is relevant here, not for every Error 14. |
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstalling should be near the end of the sequence. First check server status, verify Fortnite, clear the launcher cache, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, test permissions and security software, and close conflicting background applications.
Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher
Use this when the launcher itself cannot install, update, recognize, or start games after the preceding repairs. Confirm that you can access your Epic account before uninstalling. Epic warns that launcher reinstallation may remove installed titles or require them to be reconnected or installed again. Do not delete the Fortnite game directory unless you intentionally want a clean game reinstall. Follow Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guidance.
Reinstall Fortnite
Before uninstalling, confirm your account credentials, available storage, and any local settings you may need to recreate. If the current drive is nearly full or repeatedly corrupts files, choose a different healthy drive. Epic’s guidance also notes that installing Fortnite on the same drive as the Epic Games Launcher can resolve some ESP-related problems. Reinstallation is not guaranteed to help if the underlying cause is an outage, account issue, failing drive, Windows corruption, or security software.
Windows system and console notes
If multiple applications are failing or Windows reports repeated system-file errors, broader Windows repair may be appropriate, including Microsoft’s supported System File Checker procedure. Do not treat SFC as a Fortnite-specific Error 14 fix.
Console players should restart the console, check Epic server status, confirm Fortnite is updated, power-cycle network equipment for connection symptoms, and use the console’s built-in repair or reinstall option. Windows paths such as %localappdata%, Windows Security exclusions, and the PC Easy Anti-Cheat repair process do not transfer to consoles.
Contact Epic Support when the repair path ends
Escalate through Epic Games Support if the problem persists after verification, cache clearing, Easy Anti-Cheat repair, and a clean launcher restart; if other Epic games also fail; if the launcher cannot recognize or update games; or if Windows shows repeated disk, driver, or system-file errors. Account authentication and account-linking problems also need support rather than repeated reinstalls.
