Its 8.8-inch 165Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, dual USB-C ports, and 6,550mAh battery create a compelling middle ground between a phone and a 10- or 12-inch tablet. It is especially good for landscape touch gaming, emulation, cloud gaming, and remote play with a large controller.
But it is no longer Lenovo’s newest Legion Tab. With the newer Legion Tab 8.8-inch Gen 5 now listed by Lenovo, the Gen 3 is a value recommendation rather than an automatic best buy. It is also missing expandable storage, cellular connectivity, OLED contrast, a headphone jack, and a fingerprint reader.

The 8.8-inch format is the Legion Tab’s biggest advantage
The Gen 3 is not simply a small tablet. Its appeal is the way its dimensions solve a specific gaming problem: phones can feel cramped, while larger tablets are awkward to hold in landscape orientation for long sessions.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPACT SIZE, COMPACT FUN – The Lenovo Tab One is compact, efficient, and provides non-stop entertainment everywhere you go. It’s lightweight and has a long-lasting battery life so the fun never stops.
- SIMPLICITY IN HAND - Add a touch of style with a modern design that’s tailor-made to fit in your hand. It weighs less than a pound and has an 8.7” display that’s easy to tuck in a purse or backpack.
- NON-STOPPABLE FUN – Freedom never felt so sweet with all-day battery life and up to 12.5 hours of unplugged YouTube streaming. It’s designed to charge 15W faster than previous models so you can spend less time tethered to a power cable.
- PORTABLE MEDIA CENTER - Enjoy vibrant visuals, immersive sound, and endless entertainment anywhere you go. The HD display has 480 nits of brightness for realistic graphics and dual Dolby Atmos speakers that provide impressive sound depth.
- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
At 8.8 inches, the Legion Tab gives touch controls more room than a phone and makes games with many virtual buttons easier to play. It is still light enough for a desk stand, travel bag, bedside table, or couch. Landscape gaming is particularly comfortable, and the 16:10 aspect ratio works well for many games and remote-play interfaces.
It is less convincing as a one-handed portrait tablet. It is also too wide for some phone-sized telescopic controllers. A controller designed for large tablets is a better match than a compact phone controller such as the Backbone One. Tom’s Guide found the tablet worked well with the larger Razer Kishi Ultra, including with the folio case’s magnetic cover removed.
The 16:10 screen can also be more efficient than the iPad mini’s 3:2 display for some remote-play layouts, although the result depends on the game or streaming app. Android games may scale differently, show black bars, or retain phone-oriented interfaces.

So is 8.8 inches the perfect size? For landscape gaming and remote play, it is arguably one of the best compromises available. For reading, portrait use, or productivity, the answer is much less universal.

Display: sharp, fast, and better for gaming than for bright outdoor use
The 8.8-inch IPS/LTPS panel has a 2560 × 1600 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, glossy surface, 10-point multitouch, Dolby Vision, HDR10 support, and up to a 165Hz refresh rate. Lenovo’s cited PSREF lists 500 nits of typical brightness and up to 900 nits in high-brightness mode.
Text and game details look crisp at this size, and the high refresh rate makes scrolling, supported games, and compatible interfaces feel fluid. Touch response is also important on a gaming tablet: the larger surface gives thumbs more space to reach controls without covering as much of the action.
However, 165Hz is a panel capability, not a promise that games will render at 165 frames per second. Many demanding Android titles are capped at 60, 90, or 120fps, and some do not expose high-refresh modes at all. Running games at the panel’s full resolution can also increase GPU load; lowering a game’s rendering resolution may produce steadier performance.
IPS technology avoids OLED burn-in concerns, but it cannot deliver OLED’s deep blacks or pixel-level contrast. The glossy glass can reflect room lights and becomes less comfortable in direct sunlight. Windows Central also reported minor display ghosting. That is best treated as a review-unit or firmware-dependent observation rather than a guaranteed defect on every Gen 3.

Gaming performance
Native Android games
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM give the Legion Tab enough headroom for demanding Android games. Reviews reported smooth extended sessions in games including Zenless Zone Zero, Warzone Mobile, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and GRID Autosport, without obvious sustained slowdown during testing.

That does not mean every game runs at maximum settings or at 165fps. Results depend on the title’s optimization, graphics preset, resolution, frame-rate cap, and thermal mode. The same is true for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, PUBG Mobile, Fortnite where available, Diablo Immortal, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Warzone Mobile. Some games recognize the tablet properly; others retain phone-style scaling or impose conservative limits.
For competitive games, the 165Hz panel is useful only when the game and settings can produce a correspondingly high frame rate. For visually demanding role-playing games, a stable lower frame rate is generally more realistic than chasing the display’s maximum.
Emulation
The hardware is well suited to many older-console emulation workloads, and the larger display is more comfortable for touch controls or a physical gamepad than a phone. But emulation is unusually sensitive to software.
Performance varies with the emulator version, Vulkan or OpenGL behavior, graphics drivers, render resolution, game-specific configuration, thermal limits, and community patches. The Gen 3 should not be sold as a guarantee of flawless PS2, Switch, Windows, or other demanding emulation. Buyers should expect some titles to require configuration, exhibit graphical glitches, or run inconsistently.
Cloud gaming and remote play
This is one of the tablet’s strongest use cases. Xbox Remote Play, Steam Link, Moonlight, GeForce NOW, and PlayStation Remote Play can all benefit from the large-but-manageable screen. The 16:10 layout is well suited to many streaming interfaces, and Wi-Fi 7 provides substantial wireless capacity when paired with a compatible router.
Wi-Fi 7 does not eliminate lag. Latency still depends on the internet connection, router placement, local interference, streaming bitrate, host PC or console performance, and the service itself. For local streaming, a strong 5GHz or 6GHz network and a wired host can matter more than the tablet’s Wi-Fi generation.
The cited model has no cellular modem. Away from Wi-Fi, remote play requires a phone hotspot or another internet connection, which adds another potential source of latency and battery drain.
Thermals and sustained performance
Lenovo uses a vapor-chamber cooling system to manage the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Android Headlines reported that the tablet remained relatively comfortable where the hands contact it during extended gaming, but surface comfort is not the same as proving that the processor never throttles.
Performance mode, balanced mode, battery-saving settings, room temperature, the game, graphics preset, frame-rate target, and whether a case traps heat can all change the result. A meaningful long-session test should record the room temperature, session length, starting and ending battery percentage, mode used, frame-rate stability, and temperatures at the back, edges, and hand-contact areas.
For normal use, the takeaway is positive: the Gen 3 is designed for sustained gaming rather than short benchmark bursts. Still, expect warmth during demanding games, especially at high brightness and high refresh rates.

Battery life and charging
The 6,550mAh battery is a strong fit for a compact performance tablet, but battery life changes dramatically with workload. High-refresh gaming at high brightness is not comparable with video playback, reading, or standby.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Use case | Reported result or expectation |
|---|---|
| Mixed screen-on use | Android Headlines reported approximately 7–8 hours |
| Video streaming | Android Headlines measured about 8 hours 15 minutes |
| Different battery test | Tom’s Guide reported 15 hours 40 minutes under its own test conditions |
| Charging | Android Headlines reported roughly 48 minutes with the bundled high-wattage charger |
These figures should not be averaged into one universal battery claim. Different brightness, video source, refresh rate, network, app mix, and test loops can easily produce very different results. Gaming, cloud streaming, and maximum-brightness use will generally deliver less runtime than local video playback or reading.
Lenovo documents bypass charging, which supplies power without routing it through the battery with the aim of reducing battery heat. The exact menu name and behavior can vary with firmware, so confirm the control on the installed software. Charging while playing still depends on the charger, cable, battery temperature, and regional power standards; a third-party USB-C charger may not reproduce the bundled charger’s fastest result.

Ports, audio, controllers, and what is in the box
Two USB-C ports are a practical advantage. Both can charge the tablet according to the cited review coverage, while the side-mounted port is convenient in landscape orientation because a cable is less likely to interfere with the hands or controller. The ports do not remove the need to check the exact data-transfer and video-output capabilities of the regional specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no 3.5mm headphone jack. Private listening requires Bluetooth audio or a USB-C headset, and a wired headset may occupy one of the tablet’s ports. The dual speakers support Dolby Atmos and are suitable for casual play, but serious competitive gaming is still better with headphones.
Regional bundles may include a folio case, screen protector, charger, and USB-C cable. Verify the box contents before purchasing accessories. The folio’s kickstand can be useful but has been described as basic, and a case can affect controller clearance and heat dissipation.
- Razer Kishi Ultra: the clearest match for large-screen handheld play. Check fit with the exact case installed; Tom’s Guide used it after removing the magnetic folio cover.
- GameSir controllers: potentially attractive alternatives, but clamp width, USB-C alignment, case clearance, and Android compatibility must be checked for the specific model.
- Backbone One: designed primarily for phones and generally a poor assumption for an 8.8-inch tablet.
- Bluetooth controllers: the most flexible option, although they add another battery and device and may introduce more latency than a direct USB-C connection.

The reviewed Gen 3 specification listed Android 14 and three OS upgrades. That is a dated commitment, not a guarantee that every unit has the same Android version, security patch, or remaining support period in 2026. Before buying, check the installed Android version, security patch date, Lenovo’s current support statement, and the update history for the exact region.
Legion Space and Game Assistant provide gaming-focused controls such as performance profiles, refresh-rate controls, notification and network options, and other overlays. Labels and features can change with updates, and game-specific behavior is not necessarily consistent. Buyers should also verify DRM certification and actual streaming resolution rather than assuming that flagship hardware guarantees every service’s highest tier.
Outside gaming, the tablet is comfortable for browsing, reading in landscape, video streaming, and light multitasking. It supports keyboards, mice, and optional pen input, but it is not a laptop replacement. Android tablet apps may still use phone-like layouts, and portrait use is less natural than on a smaller phone or iPad mini.
The cameras—13MP and 2MP macro at the rear, with an 8MP front camera in the cited specification—are functional rather than a reason to buy the tablet. Video calls, note-taking, and occasional scans are possible, but camera quality is a clear compromise. There is also no fingerprint reader, so unlocking relies on other authentication methods.

External-display and desktop-style multitasking support should be verified on the current firmware if those features matter. USB-C hardware alone does not guarantee a full desktop mode or well-optimized external-screen applications.
Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 versus the newer Legion Tab
Lenovo’s current PSREF material lists a newer Legion Tab 8.8-inch Gen 5. That changes the buying question. The Gen 3 still has enough power for demanding Android games, but its value depends on the discount and the buyer’s need for current-generation silicon and a longer useful life.
Choose the Gen 3 when it is substantially cheaper, your games already run well on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and compact gaming is the priority.
Choose the newer model when the price gap is modest, you want newer hardware, or you expect to keep the tablet for many years. Do not assume the two models have identical accessories, software commitments, ports, or regional availability; compare the exact PSREF and sales listing.

How it compares with the main alternatives
iPad mini
The iPad mini is the stronger choice for iPadOS support, premium game ports, tablet applications, Apple accessory integration, and long-term platform consistency. The Legion Tab counters with a larger 8.8-inch 16:10 display, a 165Hz panel, Android flexibility, gaming controls, and a format that works especially well with large telescopic controllers. Compare the exact iPad model, storage, refresh rate, controller support, and price rather than reducing the decision to Android versus Apple.

A 10- or 11-inch tablet is better for movies, split-screen work, reading documents, and keyboard use. The Legion Tab is easier to hold for landscape gaming and less cumbersome with a controller.
Gaming phones
A gaming phone is more pocketable, may offer cellular connectivity, and can be used one-handed. The Legion Tab gives games more screen space and usually feels less cramped for touch controls, but it is not a phone replacement.
Windows handhelds
Windows handhelds are the better route to PC-game compatibility, desktop launchers, and a broader PC library. The Legion Tab is quieter, lighter in software complexity, and better suited to native Android games, emulation, streaming, and Android apps.
Who should buy the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3?
- Buy it if you want a compact Android gaming device between a phone and a full-size tablet.
- Buy it if you play landscape games with many touch controls.
- Buy it if Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Moonlight, or GeForce NOW remote play is a major use case.
- Buy it if you want to pair an 8.8-inch tablet with a large telescopic controller.
- Buy it if you prefer high refresh rate and sustained performance to OLED contrast.
- Buy it only after checking that the discount is meaningful compared with the newer Legion Tab.
Skip it if you need cellular service, microSD expansion, a fingerprint reader, a headphone jack, strong cameras, professional stylus work, or a mature tablet-productivity ecosystem. It is also poor value if you mostly play 60fps games and the Gen 3 costs close to the newer model.

Verdict
The Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 gets the most important gaming decisions right. The 8.8-inch 16:10 screen is larger and more comfortable than a phone without becoming a conventional tablet, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has serious performance headroom, the 165Hz panel makes supported games feel responsive, and two USB-C ports make landscape play and charging more convenient.
Its compromises are equally clear: IPS rather than OLED, no cellular option in the cited configuration, no microSD slot, no headphone jack, no fingerprint reader, average cameras, and software that is less consistently tablet-optimized than iPadOS. The Gen 3 is also no longer Lenovo’s newest Legion Tab.
Final verdict: buy the Legion Tab Gen 3 when it is meaningfully discounted and your priority is compact Android gaming, emulation, or remote play. If its price approaches the newer Legion Tab, buy the newer model instead. If premium tablet apps and long-term platform support matter more than high-refresh Android gaming, choose the iPad mini.
