Fortnite crashes on Windows for different reasons, so one universal fix is unlikely. The fastest safe approach is to identify when it fails, then test Epic’s sequence from least disruptive to most invasive: check requirements, verify the game files, clear the Epic Games Launcher cache, update the graphics driver, test launcher permissions, and only then investigate controllers, background software, storage, reinstalls, or hardware. This order gives you evidence after each change instead of randomly altering several parts of the system at once.
Why does Fortnite keep crashing on Windows?
A crash can occur at several layers: the PC may be below Fortnite’s requirements, a game file may be damaged, the Epic Games Launcher cache may be corrupt, a graphics driver may be incompatible, a controller or overlay may conflict with the game, or Windows may be reporting a storage or hardware fault. The symptom matters: a crash before the launcher opens points toward the launcher or Windows, while a return to the desktop when a match loads points more often toward files, drivers, memory pressure, or another program competing for resources.

What should I record before changing anything?
Write down the details that distinguish one failure from another. They make Epic Support, a hardware manufacturer, or a technician much more effective if escalation becomes necessary.

- Visible message: copy the exact wording. If Windows shows a stop code, record the complete code rather than describing it as a “blue screen.”
- What the PC does: distinguish a return to the desktop, a frozen image, a launcher restart, or a complete Windows reboot.
- Recent changes: record graphics-driver updates, Windows updates, new peripherals, and newly installed overlays or monitoring tools.
- Connected devices: note whether a controller, headset, capture device, or other USB hardware was attached when the crash occurred.
For a Fortnite error message, Epic directs players to search its knowledge base for that exact text. Searching the precise wording is more useful than searching only for “Fortnite crash.”
Does my PC meet Fortnite’s Windows requirements?
Compare your hardware with Epic’s published specifications before troubleshooting software. A computer below the minimum can fail even after a clean reinstall; one that only meets the minimum may need reduced settings and still have less headroom during busy scenes.

These specifications describe compatibility targets, not a guarantee that every configuration will be stable at every setting. Check your exact GPU model, processor, RAM amount, Windows edition, and free space. Epic lists an NVMe SSD in the recommended configuration, but that does not mean every ordinary crash requires replacing a drive. Consider a storage upgrade only when the computer is below the requirements, drive errors persist, or free space remains critically low.
How do I verify Fortnite’s files without losing saved data?
Verify before reinstalling. Epic Games Launcher compares the files on your computer, repairs files that are damaged or different, and states that saved data is not affected.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite and select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage, then select Verify.
- Wait for validation and any repair to finish before launching Fortnite.
Do not interrupt the process by shutting down the PC or killing the launcher. If validation repairs files and the next launch works, the crash was probably related to local game data. If verification completes without changes and the same crash returns, continue to the next layer rather than repeatedly verifying.
How do I clear the Epic Games Launcher cache?
A damaged launcher cache can prevent the launcher or a game from starting correctly. Clearing it is low risk and does not replace Fortnite’s installed files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Clear the cache
- Exit Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher completely. Use the notification-area icon to quit the launcher if it is still running.
- Open Windows’ Run dialog with Windows key + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open the
EpicGamesLauncherfolder, then openSaved. - Delete the launcher cache folders named
webcache,webcache_4147, orwebcache_4430when present. - Start the Epic Games Launcher again and test Fortnite.
Folder names can vary by launcher version, so remove only cache folders in the Epic Games Launcher’s Saved directory. If the launcher itself still crashes, Epic also recommends checking its server status, installing launcher updates, checking launcher requirements, trying administrator mode, disabling background applications, and reinstalling the launcher when necessary.

Could a graphics-driver update stop the crashes?
Yes, especially when the problem began after a Windows update, a game update, or a driver change. Epic includes graphics-driver updates in its crash sequence and identifies them separately as a remedy for launcher crashes.
Apply the update carefully
- Identify whether your graphics hardware is from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Use the manufacturer’s supported driver package for the exact GPU and your Windows version.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not require it.
- Launch Fortnite and reproduce the same action that previously caused the crash.
Change one variable at a time. If a new driver is the first change, the result is easier to interpret than if you simultaneously alter graphics settings, overlays, and Windows services. A driver update cannot compensate for hardware below Fortnite’s minimum requirements or a failing GPU.
What should I do if the Epic Games Launcher crashes or will not open Fortnite?
Treat a launcher failure separately from a Fortnite-only failure. If other Epic titles also fail to start, the launcher, its cache, permissions, or background software becomes more likely than one damaged Fortnite file.

- Check Epic’s service-status information for an outage or maintenance event.
- Install any pending Epic Games Launcher update.
- Clear the launcher cache using the steps above.
- Right-click the launcher and try Run as administrator.
- Disable fullscreen optimization where Epic’s launcher guidance identifies it as relevant.
- Temporarily close background applications and overlays, then test again.
- Reinstall the launcher only after the lower-impact checks fail.
Administrator mode is a diagnostic test, not a reason to run every game permanently with elevated rights. If it changes the result, investigate permissions and security software rather than assuming elevation is the permanent solution.
Why does Fortnite crash when a controller is connected?
Epic documents a specific controller-related path for the message “The application has hung and will now close.” If that message appears while a controller is attached, disconnect the controller before changing drivers or reinstalling the game.
- Disconnect the controller from USB or Bluetooth.
- Press the Windows key and restart the computer.
- After Windows loads, launch Fortnite without reconnecting the controller.
- If the game opens, install current Windows security updates, verify Fortnite’s files, and update the graphics driver before testing the controller again.
- If the crash remains, Epic’s next escalation is reinstalling Fortnite.
This test does not prove that every controller crash is caused by the controller. It isolates the peripheral from the launch path, which tells you whether to investigate controller firmware, Bluetooth, USB power, or an input utility later.
Can overlays and background applications make Fortnite crash?
They can interfere with rendering, input, anti-cheat, or resource usage. Epic includes background-application isolation in its escalation sequence, so close potential conflicts temporarily rather than uninstalling several programs at once.

Use a controlled isolation test
- Close overlays supplied by chat, GPU-control, recording, RGB, performance-monitoring, and peripheral software.
- Leave them closed only long enough to reproduce the crash.
- Re-enable one category at a time after Fortnite is stable.
- When one program brings the crash back, update it or change its in-game overlay setting instead of disabling unrelated software.
Record which applications were closed and whether the crash occurred at the same point. A clean test with no change makes background software less likely and points you toward storage, drivers, or hardware.
Could low disk space or a drive error be responsible?
Yes. Epic lists drive-error checks in its escalation guidance and identifies low hard-drive space as a possible contributor to corrupted-data errors. Check the drive that contains Fortnite and the Windows system drive, because either can affect updates, shader caches, paging, or temporary files.
- Free enough space for Windows, the Epic launcher, and Fortnite to update without running at the limit.
- Use Windows’ built-in drive checking tools and review any reported file-system errors.
- Watch for unusually slow loading, repeated file repairs, disappearing files, or other applications reporting read/write errors.
- Check that Windows’ date and time are correct; Epic lists inconsistent system date/time as another possible contributor to corrupted-data errors.
An NVMe SSD is part of Epic’s recommended configuration, but replacing a drive is justified only when the existing drive is undersized, persistently reports errors, or is otherwise failing. Back up important files before hardware work.
Should I exclude the Fortnite folder from security software?
Only as a targeted, temporary test after verification, driver, cache, and background-application checks. A security exclusion changes protection behavior and can expose the game directory to unwanted files, so it should not be the first response to an unexplained crash.
If security software has logged a blocked Fortnite or Epic process, consult its documented exception procedure, add only the specific folder or executable needed for the test, and remove the exclusion if it does not change the crash. Keep Windows and security definitions current while testing.
When should I reinstall Fortnite or the Epic Games Launcher?
Reinstalling is more disruptive than verifying files, clearing cache, or updating a driver. Use it when those checks fail, when the installation repeatedly repairs the same data, or when the launcher remains damaged after its cache and permissions have been tested.
Choose the narrowest reinstall
- Fortnite only: use this when the launcher works and Fortnite alone crashes.
- Epic Games Launcher: use this when the launcher itself crashes, fails to update, or cannot start multiple titles.
- Both: reserve this for persistent launcher-and-game failures after checking storage and background software.
Before uninstalling, note your installation location and make sure you have sufficient free space for a complete download. Reinstalling does not repair a failing GPU, unstable RAM, a defective drive, or a Windows installation problem.

What does deleting the local FortniteGame folder do?
Epic lists removal of the local FortniteGame folder as a late escalation step. It clears local configuration and cached data that may remain even after ordinary file verification, but it is more disruptive because settings and other local data may need to be recreated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse this only after recording your settings, closing the launcher, and completing lower-risk tests. Do not delete folders elsewhere on the drive just because their names contain “Fortnite.” If the crash continues after the folder is recreated, the evidence shifts toward drivers, peripherals, background software, storage, or hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU required to stop normal crashes?
No. Epic’s February 10, 2026 notice says those three features become requirements for PC players in all Fortnite tournaments from February 19, 2026. That is a competitive anti-cheat and tournament-access requirement, not proof that a routine crash in public play is caused by Secure Boot, TPM, or IOMMU.
Epic describes IOMMU as controlling how hardware devices access system memory and reports that about 95% of Fortnite PC players use Windows 11-compatible systems. Check these settings when tournament participation is your issue or when Epic displays a specific security requirement; do not change firmware settings as a generic crash remedy without confirming motherboard support and understanding the recovery implications.
How do I escalate a crash that still happens?
Escalate with evidence rather than repeatedly applying broad fixes. Preserve the exact Fortnite message, launcher logs if available, Windows Event Viewer details, the graphics-driver version, the time of the crash, and any stop code or dump information.
Recommended Free Tools
Use selective Windows driver testing
Microsoft warns that broad driver verification can reduce performance or leave Windows unusable. Do not verify every driver at once. Test only a suspicious or recently changed driver, and create a recovery plan before using advanced verification tools.
If Windows itself crashes, the stop code and dump information are more valuable than a generic Fortnite reinstall. If only Fortnite fails after file verification, cache clearing, driver updates, controller isolation, background-app testing, and storage checks, contact the hardware manufacturer as Epic’s final escalation step. A Windows 11 gaming-PC upgrade is reasonable only when the current system falls below Fortnite’s published requirements; it is not a substitute for diagnosing a component that is already failing.

Which fix should I try first?
Use the failure layer, reversibility, evidence produced, and scope of the problem to choose the next action:
| Observed situation | First targeted test | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Crash before the launcher opens | Check service status, launcher updates, cache, and administrator test | Whether the failure is launcher-specific |
| Fortnite crashes after an update or at match load | Verify files, then update the graphics driver | Whether local data or rendering software changed |
| “The application has hung and will now close” with a controller attached | Disconnect controller and restart Windows | Whether the peripheral is part of the launch path |
| Repeated corrupted-data errors | Check date/time, free space, and drive errors | Whether storage or system time is contributing |
| Windows reboots or shows a stop code | Preserve the code and test suspicious drivers selectively | Whether the problem extends beyond Fortnite |
| Tournament access is blocked by a security notice | Review Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU requirements | Whether the issue is eligibility rather than ordinary stability |
Stop when a change produces a stable, repeatable result. If a fix works only when several changes are made together, undo them one at a time later so you can identify the actual cause and avoid unnecessary permanent settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will lowering Fortnite’s graphics settings fix every crash?
No. Lower settings can reduce GPU and memory load on a system close to its limits, but they cannot repair damaged files, a broken launcher cache, a faulty driver, or a failing storage device. Use settings changes as a controlled test after the file and driver checks, not as a replacement for them.
Why does Fortnite crash with no error message?
A return to the desktop can leave useful information in Windows Event Viewer even when Fortnite displays nothing. Record the event time, module or driver named in the event, and whether the crash followed a driver or Windows update; those details help distinguish an application fault from a system fault.
Can an overclock cause Fortnite to close unexpectedly?
Yes, an otherwise stable-looking CPU, GPU, or RAM overclock can fail under Fortnite’s particular workload. Return hardware to its manufacturer settings before escalation and retest, because troubleshooting an overclock and a game installation simultaneously obscures the cause.
Should I run Windows Driver Verifier for a Fortnite crash?
Only when you have a specific suspect and a recovery plan. Microsoft warns that verifying all drivers broadly can make Windows unusable, so selective testing of a recently changed or suspected driver is safer than enabling verification across the entire system.
