“Servers Not Responding” does not, by itself, prove that Fortnite is down worldwide. The message is a general connection symptom. It can appear during an Epic Games outage or maintenance window, but it can also be caused by packet loss, a failing Wi-Fi link, DNS or proxy settings, a blocked firewall path, stale cache, an incorrect device clock, or a problem in the game client. Check Epic’s live status first. If Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking are operational, work through the local network and client checks below, testing the game after each meaningful change.

What does the Fortnite “Servers Not Responding” error mean?

Epic defines a connection issue broadly as anything that prevents you from using the Epic Games Launcher or another Epic product. That is why the same message can have several causes. Your console or PC may be unable to reach Epic, the route may be losing packets, or Fortnite may be rejecting a session because the client, clock, cache, or network configuration is out of date.

The message can affect login, party formation, matchmaking, or an existing match. A brief outage and a local router problem can look identical on screen, so troubleshooting starts by separating those two possibilities.

Are Fortnite servers down right now?

Use the Epic Games Public Status page before changing settings. Expand Fortnite and inspect Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking, not just the overall Fortnite heading. Epic also posts incident information through its @FortniteStatus account and known-issues channels.

Status-page result What it means What to do
Operational No active incident is reported for that component. Continue with local network, device, and client checks.
Degraded performance or outage Epic is reporting a service-side problem. Wait for the incident updates and retry after recovery; local restarts cannot repair an Epic-side failure.
Scheduled maintenance Access may be interrupted during the published window. Plan to play after the window ends and allow extra time for services to return.

Status is volatile. For example, one status listing included Epic Online Services maintenance scheduled for 10 November 2026, 06:00–07:30 UTC, with possible disruption to sessions and lobbies. Treat such a listing as a time-specific notice, not proof that Fortnite is down whenever you see this error.

What should I do when the status page is operational?

Make one change at a time and launch Fortnite again after each step. That tells you which change mattered and prevents several altered settings from making the cause harder to identify.

  1. Restart the modem and router. Power both devices off, wait briefly for them to shut down, then power the modem back on and let it reconnect before starting the router. Retry Fortnite on the same device.
  2. Test another connection. If practical, compare the affected device with another device on the same network. If every device has trouble, suspect the router, ISP, or an upstream incident; if only one device fails, concentrate on that device’s settings and Fortnite installation.
  3. Synchronize the clock. Set Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch to automatic date and time, including the correct time zone. An incorrect clock can interfere with authentication and session checks.
  4. Try a public DNS resolver and flush DNS on Windows. Change DNS only long enough to test whether name resolution is the issue. In an elevated Command Prompt, run ipconfig /flushdns, restart Fortnite, and record whether the result changes. Restore your normal DNS if the test makes no difference.
  5. Inspect firewall, proxy, and filtering rules. Make sure the Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite are allowed through the operating-system firewall. Disable a manually configured proxy while testing, and check that a security product, school or workplace filter, or router block is not denying Epic domains.
  6. Check the Hosts file. A stale entry can redirect or block a service even when ordinary web browsing works. Remove only entries you can identify as intentional; if you are unsure, save a backup and ask your administrator or ISP for help rather than deleting unrelated lines.
  7. Clear cache and verify the installation. Clear the launcher or device cache using the platform’s supported procedure. On PC, use the launcher’s file-verification option when the problem points to damaged or incomplete files. Verification is safer than immediately reinstalling the entire game.
  8. Update the software stack. Install pending Windows or console updates, update router firmware, and restart the device. Outdated network components can cause a failure that looks like a server problem.
  9. Stop competing traffic. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, uploads, and high-bitrate video streams. Close background applications that consume bandwidth or create many connections, then test Fortnite again.

How do latency and packet loss cause the message?

Epic defines latency, or ping, as the time for data to travel from your device to a Fortnite server and back. Congestion, ISP routing, Wi-Fi interference, and the selected matchmaking subregion can all change that round-trip time. A connection can appear fast for web pages yet still be unsuitable for a real-time match if packets arrive late or have to be retransmitted.

Epic’s support guidance treats consistently higher than about 1% packet loss as a potential problem. Compare an external test with Fortnite’s in-game network statistics rather than relying on a single speed-test download number.

Symptom Useful test Likely direction
High ping only on Wi-Fi Connect the device by Ethernet and repeat the same match or endpoint test. Interference, weak signal, band congestion, or router placement.
Packet loss on wired and wireless devices Test the relevant Epic regional endpoint at different times and save the results. Router, line quality, ISP congestion, or ISP routing.
Normal external tests but Fortnite alone fails Compare the in-game result with the endpoint test and check status, firewall, and client files. Service-specific filtering, routing, or a Fortnite installation issue.

For a clean test, use a wired Ethernet connection when possible. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic tool because it removes the wireless link from the path; it cannot bypass Epic maintenance or repair an ISP outage. Stop other traffic while testing, then compare average latency, packet loss, and jitter with Fortnite’s result.

Should I change Wi-Fi settings or buy a gaming router?

Try configuration changes before buying hardware. Improve router placement, test both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, update firmware, and enable QoS, Smart Queue, or a gaming mode if your router supports it. These settings can reduce local contention, but they cannot correct a bad route beyond your home or an Epic service incident.

A different router becomes reasonable when the current unit is faulty or lacks firmware support, useful band management, or queue-management controls. A Wi-Fi 6 gaming router is a conditional hardware option for that situation, not a guaranteed Fortnite fix. If wired testing is stable while Wi-Fi is not, upgrading the wireless environment is more defensible than replacing hardware when both links show the same packet loss.

How do I fix Fortnite matchmaking errors 1, 2, and 3?

For matchmaking errors numbered 1–3, follow a deliberate order instead of repeatedly pressing “Retry.”

  1. Check the Epic status page for Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking.
  2. Restart the modem and router, then restart the gaming device.
  3. Test a public DNS resolver and flush DNS on Windows.
  4. Synchronize the device clock.
  5. Clear the launcher or device cache.
  6. Review proxy, firewall, filtering, and Hosts-file entries that could block Epic services.
  7. Apply Epic’s port-forwarding guidance only if the matchmaking branch specifically calls for it and you understand how to undo the changes.
  8. Close background applications and retest with other downloads and streams paused.

If the status page changes to an incident during these steps, stop modifying the home network and wait for the service update. Port changes, DNS changes, and a new cable cannot restore a server that is under maintenance.

What if the party error is -91?

Party error -91 has additional branches beyond a general login failure. On PC, verify Fortnite’s files. On a console, clear the platform cache using its supported procedure, then restart the console. Check that crossplay is enabled for everyone who needs to join the party, and inspect the console’s NAT status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart the router and device after changing NAT or crossplay settings. If one player can join other parties but not this group, compare each participant’s NAT type, crossplay setting, and network rather than assuming the Fortnite servers are unavailable.

How can I tell whether the ISP is responsible?

Persistent high ping or packet loss across multiple devices points away from a single Fortnite installation. Test the relevant Epic regional endpoint, note the average latency, packet-loss percentage, jitter, time of day, and whether the issue affects login, matchmaking, or an active match. Give those details to your ISP along with the router model and whether Ethernet changes the result.

Ask the ISP to check line quality and routing rather than requesting a generic “speed boost.” If the ISP finds no fault, contact Epic support with the status-page result, account platform, exact error text, timestamps, and the steps already completed. Do not include passwords or security codes.

What mistakes make this error harder to diagnose?

  • Assuming the exact wording proves a global outage.
  • Changing DNS, firewall rules, ports, router hardware, and game files all at once.
  • Testing while downloads, uploads, or streams are still saturating the connection.
  • Using a VPN or proxy during diagnosis and then treating its altered route as the normal connection.
  • Reinstalling before clearing cache or verifying files.
  • Leaving temporary firewall or port exceptions enabled after the test.
  • Ignoring the selected matchmaking region when comparing ping results.

When should I stop troubleshooting?

Stop local changes when Epic reports an outage or maintenance, when every device fails at the same time, or when repeated endpoint tests show sustained packet loss outside your home. In those cases, preserve your test results and wait for the service or ISP update. Continue local troubleshooting only when the status is operational and the evidence points to one device, one network path, or one Fortnite installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reinstalling Fortnite fix “Servers Not Responding”?

Reinstallation can replace damaged files, but it cannot fix an Epic outage, ISP routing problem, packet loss, or a blocked firewall path. Clear the cache and run the platform’s file verification first; reinstall only when those checks identify a client-side installation problem.

Why does Fortnite fail only at certain times of day?

Time-specific failures often indicate congestion: household traffic, neighborhood ISP load, or a busy route to the selected matchmaking subregion. Record latency and packet loss at a quiet time and during the failure so your ISP can compare the paths.

Can a VPN make Fortnite connect when servers are not responding?

A VPN changes the route and can sometimes expose a routing fault, but it can also add latency, packet loss, or a new block. Treat it as a temporary diagnostic comparison, not a dependable fix, and remove it while testing your normal connection.

Do I need port forwarding for every Fortnite connection problem?

No. Port forwarding belongs to the specific matchmaking-error procedure and is not a universal remedy for the message. Apply it only when the relevant platform guidance calls for it, document the original settings, and remove unnecessary rules afterward.
