Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Epic has acknowledged a Fortnite split-screen camera-angle bug, not a black-screen bug. Its support notice says Player 1’s camera can shift when Player 2 opens or interacts with a menu such as Inventory or the map, and that the issue will be fixed in a future update. It does not give a release date or name a version. A separate Xbox player report describes Player 1’s screen going black after Player 2’s controller batteries died, but that report does not establish an Epic-confirmed cause or fix.
Is Fortnite’s split-screen black screen officially acknowledged?
Not in the official notice available for this issue. Epic’s split-screen support notice describes Player 1’s camera moving to a different angle when Player 2 interacts with a menu. Epic says, “This will be fixed in a future update,” but does not specify when or which update.
That is a camera shift, not a black screen. The symptoms can be easy to conflate because both affect Player 1’s portion of the split display, but the official notice does not say that Player 1’s screen goes black.
Camera shift or black screen: which symptom are you seeing?
| What happens | What is known | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Player 1’s view changes angle when Player 2 opens or uses a menu, such as Inventory or the map. | Epic has acknowledged this camera-angle issue and says a future update will address it; no date or version is stated in the notice. | Check Epic’s issue channels for an update. The support notice does not provide a temporary workaround. |
| Player 1’s upper screen turns black after Player 2’s controller loses power and a controller-selection prompt appears. | An Xbox player described this sequence in a Reddit report. It is an individual report, not confirmation that Epic has identified the cause or that this is a general fixable condition. | Note the exact sequence and setup, and report it through Epic’s current issue channels. Keeping the controller powered and connected is a reasonable precaution, not a confirmed Fortnite fix. |
What to check when Player 1’s screen goes black
- Record the setup: note whether you are on Xbox or PlayStation, the Fortnite mode or experience, the game version, and when the problem occurred.
- Describe the event precisely: state which player’s screen was affected and whether the black screen followed a controller disconnect, a controller-selection prompt, or Player 2 opening a menu. Do not report a camera-angle change as a black screen.
- Check Epic’s live channels: Epic directs players to its Fortnite Status page and @FortniteStatus for service status, and to its Fortnite Live Issues and Bugs guidance and known-issue channels for game problems. A status page showing operational systems does not prove that a local split-screen bug is fixed.
- Report an unlisted black-screen symptom: include the steps immediately before it happened, the controller prompt if one appeared, and whether reconnecting or restarting changed the behavior. The available official notice covers the camera shift, not the separate Xbox black-screen report.
A separate split-screen Lobby issue has its own workaround
Epic’s v42.00 fixes and known issues post lists a Lobby problem in which a player can get stuck before choosing a first Sprite. For that specific issue, Epic’s temporary workaround is to choose the first Sprite on each account separately before joining in split-screen. The same post also lists the menu-related camera shift; it does not identify the reported Xbox black screen.
