If Fortnite is stuck on “Checking for Updates,” first determine whether Epic’s servers are communicating normally, then work through local fixes from least disruptive to most disruptive. Check the Epic Games Public Status page and the Fortnite Status page before changing DNS, deleting files, or reinstalling. Epic says the PlayStation symptom can result from “a miscommunication with the Epic Games Servers.” If both status pages show operational services, fully close Fortnite, restart your device and network, test a wired connection if possible, and then follow the platform-specific update, cache, and file-repair steps below.
Why does Fortnite stay on “Checking for Updates”?
The message appears when the game cannot complete its check with Epic’s update and login services. The cause may be an Epic-side incident, a suspended game process, an unstable Wi-Fi path, damaged launcher or cache data, blocked firewall traffic, insufficient storage, or an incomplete local installation.

Do not assume that a console setting will fix an outage. If either status page reports an incident, wait for service recovery and avoid repeatedly reinstalling the game. At the time this guidance was compiled, both pages reported Fortnite services as operational, but their live status can change.
When services are operational, use this order: close the game completely; restart the device and modem/router; test the connection, preferably over Ethernet; apply the platform’s update and cache procedure; verify or repair files; and reinstall only if the earlier actions fail.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What should I try first on any platform?
These checks are safe, quick, and help separate a temporary process failure from a network or installation problem.
- Check service status. Open the Epic Games Public Status page and Fortnite Status. An active incident is an Epic-side problem, not a reason to alter your console.
- Quit Fortnite completely. Do not leave it suspended in the background. Use the platform’s quit or close command, then launch it again.
- Restart the device. A full restart clears a stuck game process and refreshes network authentication.
- Power-cycle the modem and router. Unplug networking equipment, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait until the connection is fully restored before launching Fortnite.
- Test the connection. Run the platform’s built-in network test. If possible, connect the device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable; Epic says a “LAN/wired connection is highly recommended.” A cable can identify Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot repair an Epic outage.
- Check storage. Leave enough free space for a patch to download, unpack, and install. A nearly full drive can make an update appear frozen.
How do I fix “Checking for Updates” on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4?
Epic’s PlayStation sequence combines service checks, network refreshes, license validation, and a fresh connection test. Follow it in order rather than changing several settings at once.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check both Epic status pages, then close Fortnite from the PlayStation home screen.
- Restart the modem and router, wait for internet service to return, and restart the PlayStation.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses on PS5. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. This refreshes entitlement data without deleting installed games.
- Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select your network, and run Test Internet Connection. If Wi-Fi is questionable, repeat the test with Ethernet.
- If the connection still fails, edit the network’s advanced settings and use manual DNS values 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, with MTU set to 1500, then save and restart the console. These values are a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Launch Fortnite and allow the update check to complete. If an Epic incident is active, revert any temporary network changes after service is restored.
DNS, MTU, and a cable cannot correct an Epic-side outage. They are useful only when the status pages are operational and your own connection is the likely failure point.

How do I update Fortnite on Xbox when it is stuck?
Xbox problems often come from a suspended game, a queued update, cache data, or limited storage. The update command is separate from simply opening Fortnite.
- Open My games & apps > Manage > Updates and look for Fortnite. Start the available update or select Update all if you intentionally want every queued game patched.
- Highlight Fortnite, press the Xbox button, choose Quit, and confirm that it is no longer running in the background.
- Restart the Xbox from the power menu. If the console is unresponsive, hold its power button until it shuts down, wait briefly, and start it again.
- Check Xbox and Epic service-status pages and run the console’s network test. Use Ethernet for a controlled comparison with Wi-Fi.
- If the update remains stalled, clear the Xbox cache using the console’s full power-cycle procedure, then retry the download. Check available internal and expansion storage before deleting anything.
- Reinstall only after the update queue, restart, network test, cache reset, and storage checks fail. A reinstall can require downloading the complete game again.
Menu names can vary slightly between Xbox system versions, but the essential sequence is to force the update, quit the suspended process, restart, and verify storage before reinstalling.
How do I force a Fortnite update on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo provides a direct software-update command and a separate way to inspect stalled downloads. Clearing the Switch cache can help connection errors, but it also removes saved web data.

- Connect the Switch to the internet and return to the HOME menu without launching Fortnite.
- Highlight Fortnite, press + or −, choose Software Update, and select Via the Internet.
- If the download is stalled, close Fortnite, restart the console, reconnect to the internet, and open System Settings > Data Management > Update Download Progress to check the queue.
- Retry the software update after the queue resumes. Keep the console connected to power if the patch is large.
- For persistent connection errors, use Nintendo’s cache-reset option. Read the confirmation carefully: the reset removes cached web data such as saved IDs, passwords, cookies, and browsing history, although it does not delete installed games or save data.
- Check free storage before considering a re-download. Remove only data you can restore or redownload, and keep the Nintendo Account that owns the software available.
Nintendo states that some connection errors can usually be fixed by clearing the cache. That step is more disruptive than a restart because of the web-data loss, so reserve it for repeated errors.
How do I fix the Epic Games Launcher on PC?
On PC, the update check can fail in the launcher even when the game files are intact. Close both Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher before deleting local data or verifying files.
- Confirm that the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements and install current graphics drivers. Close overlays and unnecessary background applications that may interfere with the launcher.
- Restart the modem/router and the computer. Disable VPN or proxy software temporarily, then test the connection again.
- Check that Windows Firewall or another security product permits the Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite. Do not leave protection disabled permanently; create an allowed-app rule instead.
- Ensure at least 10 GB of free storage is available on the relevant drive. Updates need working space in addition to the game’s installed size.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Exit the launcher completely, including its notification-area process, then remove the launcher’s web-cache data and restart the launcher.
- If the loop continues, close the game and launcher and remove the local
FortniteGamefolder. This removes local configuration and cache data, so do not delete it while either process is running. - Restart Windows. In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library > Fortnite > Manage > Verify. The launcher checks installed files and redownloads damaged or missing ones.
- Launch Fortnite after verification completes. If the launcher itself remains broken, reinstall the launcher before reinstalling the full game; broader connection troubleshooting is the next escalation.
File verification is less costly than a full reinstall because it replaces only files the launcher identifies as missing or damaged. A launcher cache reset and the FortniteGame deletion can require settings to be rebuilt, but they do not substitute for checking server status first.

What should I do on Android or iPhone?
Use the normal app-store update flow while connected to the internet, then open Fortnite only after the store reports that the app is current.
- Check Epic’s status pages before troubleshooting the device.
- Open Google Play or the App Store, find Fortnite, and install any pending update. Keep the device on a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection during the download.
- Force-close Fortnite, restart the phone or tablet, and try again.
- Confirm that the device has enough free storage and that automatic date and time are enabled; incorrect clock data can interfere with secure sign-in.
- If the problem is account-specific, use Epic’s mobile login and installation support resources rather than repeatedly clearing app data. Clearing app data can remove local settings and require another sign-in.
Which fix should I choose, and how risky is it?
The table shows the relative cost of each path. Start at the top and move down only when the previous check produces no change.
| Action | Platforms | What it tests or repairs | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check Epic and Fortnite status | All | Rules out a live service incident | Very low |
| Quit, restart, and power-cycle networking | All | Clears suspended processes and temporary network state | Low |
| Ethernet connection test | Console, PC | Separates Wi-Fi interference from broader failures | Low |
| Manual DNS/MTU test | PlayStation | Tests name resolution and packet-size settings | Moderate |
| Cache or launcher cleanup | Xbox, Switch, PC | Removes stale download or web data | Moderate; Switch cache reset removes saved web data |
| Verify installed files | PC | Finds and replaces damaged or missing files | Moderate; download time varies |
| Delete local game data | PC | Rebuilds local Fortnite configuration and cache | High; settings may need to be recreated |
| Reinstall Fortnite | All supported platforms | Replaces the entire installation | Highest; a full download may be required |
When should I reinstall Fortnite?
Reinstall only when the service is operational, the device has sufficient storage, and the restart, network, cache, and file-repair steps have failed. A reinstall is expensive in bandwidth and time, and it cannot resolve an Epic account problem or an active outage.

Before removing the game, note your platform account, Epic account sign-in method, and any custom settings you may want to restore. After installation, allow every patch to finish before launching; interrupting the first update can recreate the same loop.
How can I tell whether the problem is my network, the platform, or Epic?
Use controlled comparisons instead of changing several variables together.
- Only Fortnite fails while other online games work: check Epic and Fortnite status first, then suspect the game process, launcher cache, or account session.
- Several games and websites fail: focus on the modem/router, ISP connection, DNS, or Wi-Fi interference.
- Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works: improve wireless placement or continue using wired LAN for updates; the game itself is probably not damaged.
- Every device on the same network fails: reboot networking equipment and contact the ISP if service does not return.
- The update stops at the same point after file verification: check storage, security software permissions, and the drive for errors before reinstalling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing DNS make Fortnite update faster?
DNS changes only affect how a device finds a service; they do not increase download bandwidth or repair an Epic outage. Use the manual values as a PlayStation troubleshooting test, then return to automatic DNS if it makes no difference.
Can I lose my Fortnite progress by clearing a cache or reinstalling?
Fortnite progression is associated with the linked Epic or platform account rather than the local cache. You can still lose local preferences, downloads, or unsynced settings, so confirm the correct account before deleting data.
Should I use a phone hotspot to test the update?
A short hotspot test can show whether your home router or ISP is involved, but it may consume cellular data and may be slower. Stop the test if the download is large or your mobile plan has limits.
Why does Fortnite update successfully on one device but not another?
The devices may have different free space, cached launcher data, account sessions, or network paths. Compare them on the same connection, then apply the platform-specific repair steps instead of assuming the game servers are selectively blocking one device.
