If Fortnite stays on “Connecting,” the cause is usually one of three things: an Epic service or matchmaking outage, a problem with your network or device, or a session-specific bug when rejoining an island. Check Epic’s live status page first. If Fortnite services are operational, work through Epic’s connection checks in order, starting with your router and ending with launcher, Windows, and background-app settings. A hang that happens only after leaving and immediately rejoining the same UEFN island points to a different, reported rejoin problem rather than a normal home-network failure.
What does the Fortnite “Connecting” hang mean?
“Connecting” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Fortnite can display it while it is trying to authenticate, find a match, join a party, create or enter a session, or load an island. Epic defines a connection issue broadly as anything that prevents use of the Epic Games Launcher or another Epic product, including failure to connect to Fortnite, join parties, or matchmake, as well as packet loss and high latency.

Epic says matchmaking errors are mainly caused by server maintenance or a network connection issue. A third category matters for creators and playtesters: a session-specific rejoin failure can leave a player on Connecting even when login and matchmaking services are otherwise working. The quickest route to the right fix is therefore to identify when the hang occurs before changing settings.
Is Fortnite down right now?
Open the Epic Games Public Status page before restarting equipment or changing DNS. It reports the current state of Fortnite login, game services, matchmaking, sessions, and lobbies, and it is more reliable than an old screenshot or a social-media comment. Epic also lists live updates through @FortniteStatus, the Fixes, Improvements & Known Issues community, Fortnite News, and mode-specific channels.

On October 26, 2026, the status page showed all systems operational and no Fortnite incident. That snapshot is already historical when you read it, so use the live page for the present situation. The page also listed scheduled EOS Sessions and Lobbies maintenance for November 10, 2026, from 06:00 to 07:30 UTC. Epic warned that existing sessions could time out and that creating sessions, sending invites, searching, and matchmaking might be unavailable during that window.
| Status result | What it means | Your next move |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite component is degraded or under maintenance | A server-side problem can produce Connecting, matchmaking errors, failed invites, or returns to the lobby. | Wait for Epic’s update. Repeated local resets will not repair an outage. |
| Everything is operational | The investigation shifts toward your network, device configuration, or a session-specific island problem. A green page does not prove every player or route is healthy. | Use the documented connection sequence below, then test whether the symptom is limited to one island or rejoin. |
| No Fortnite incident, but a scheduled maintenance window is near | Session and lobby features can be interrupted during the announced UTC period. | Avoid starting a critical event in that window and check the page again when it ends. |
How can I distinguish an outage, a home-network problem, and a UEFN rejoin bug?
Compare the timing, scope, and recovery behavior rather than relying on the word Connecting alone.
| Pattern | Clues | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Epic outage or maintenance | Several Fortnite functions fail at once; friends report the same issue; the Public Status page shows a component incident. | Monitor Epic’s status and official update channels. |
| Local network or device configuration | Only your connection is affected; other players can join; packet loss, high latency, DNS failures, a wrong clock, proxy, cache, or outdated software may be involved. | Follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting in order and test again after each meaningful change. |
| Session-specific UEFN behavior | Normal login works, but leaving an ongoing playtest or published island and immediately trying to rejoin the same island causes a long Connecting hang, a return to lobby, or a crash. | Record the island and rejoin sequence, try a fresh session, and report it as a bug if it persists. |
Also note whether the first join fails or only a second attempt after leaving. That single detail is useful when separating a general connection failure from the reported UEFN case.

How do I fix Fortnite stuck on Connecting when the status page is normal?
Epic’s connection guidance is a sequence, not a promise that every item applies to every platform. Start with reversible network checks, then move to operating-system and launcher changes. Console and mobile players should use the platform-specific instructions Epic provides rather than applying Windows-only commands.
- Restart the modem or router. Power it off, wait for it to finish shutting down, then power it back on and allow the connection to return fully before launching Fortnite. This clears a temporary routing or lease problem without changing account data.
- Try a public DNS service. Change DNS in your router or device network settings using a reputable public resolver, then reconnect. DNS can affect how your device reaches Epic services, but it cannot fix an Epic outage.
- Synchronize the device clock. Enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings. An incorrect clock can interfere with authentication and secure connections even when ordinary web browsing works.
- Whitelist Epic’s required domains. Check security software, parental controls, router filters, and managed-network rules. Allow the Epic domains listed in Epic’s current connection article; do not guess additional domains or disable all security permanently.
- Clear or reset the device cache. Use the cache-clearing procedure for your platform. Cached data can become inconsistent after an update, but the menu path and consequences differ between Windows, consoles, and mobile devices.
- Verify that Windows is up to date. On a Windows PC, install pending system updates, restart, and test Fortnite again. This step does not apply to consoles or phones in the same way; update those devices through their own system settings.
- Identify and disable proxy servers. Check the operating system, browser, VPN, and network-management settings for a proxy that is routing game traffic. Disable only a proxy you recognize or control, then restore it if it belongs to a managed workplace or school network.
- Try Epic Games Launcher Offline Mode where it applies. Offline Mode is a diagnostic option for launcher access, not a way to play online matchmaking without a connection. If the launcher cannot work offline either, the issue may be local to its files or installation.
- Flush DNS on Windows. Open Command Prompt with the required permissions and run the DNS-flush command from Epic’s current Windows instructions. Close and reopen the launcher afterward. Do not substitute unrelated commands copied from forum posts.
- Reset the Windows Hosts file to its default. A modified Hosts file can redirect or block Epic endpoints. Follow Epic’s documented reset procedure and preserve a backup if the PC is managed or has custom development entries.
- Adjust Epic Games Launcher files as Epic instructs. Epic’s article identifies the launcher-file changes to make for connection failures. Apply only the named files and paths, then restart the launcher; deleting arbitrary folders can create a separate installation problem.
- Disable background applications. Temporarily close overlays, traffic shapers, security tools, download clients, and other software that can intercept network traffic or consume bandwidth. Re-enable applications one at a time after testing so you can identify a conflict instead of leaving protections off.
After each change, test the same action that originally failed: signing in, matchmaking, joining a party, or entering the island. If one step changes the behavior, keep a note of it for a later bug report or support conversation.
Does the fix differ on PC, console, and mobile?
The underlying causes overlap, but the controls do not. Use this division to avoid applying a Windows repair to a console or deleting data without knowing what it removes.

|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows Update, clock synchronization, proxy settings, DNS flush, Hosts-file reset, launcher-file repair, background-app isolation, and Epic Games Launcher Offline Mode. | Commands and file changes must follow Epic’s current Windows instructions; administrator access may be required. |
| PlayStation or Xbox | Restart the console and network equipment, verify automatic time, review DNS and network settings, clear the platform’s cache using its official procedure, and check service status. | Do not use Windows commands or remove saved data unless the console maker’s instructions specifically call for it. |
| Mobile | Restart the device and router, use automatic time, review DNS or private-DNS settings, update the operating system and Fortnite, and test without a restrictive VPN or proxy. | Cache and reinstall options vary by operating system; confirm what account data is synchronized before deleting app data. |
What if Fortnite hangs only when I rejoin the same UEFN island?
A reported case is narrower than a normal login problem. In an Epic Developer Community forum report posted December 18, 2025, players described leaving an ongoing UEFN playtest or published island and immediately trying to rejoin. The report says the player could remain on Connecting for a long time, return to the lobby after roughly seven minutes on consoles, or eventually crash on PC.
Participants said they reproduced versions of the behavior on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and mobile, in private, public, and published-island sessions. Those reports are community evidence, not an Epic release-note confirmation that every platform has one universal bug or that a permanent fix exists. The reported timing—about seven minutes on consoles and about ten minutes before a PC crash—is anecdotal, not a service-level expectation.
How to test whether this is the rejoin pattern
- Join the island from a fresh launch and note whether the first entry succeeds.
- Leave the ongoing session, then attempt to rejoin the same island immediately.
- Try a different island or a newly created session. A different result strengthens the session-specific hypothesis but does not prove it.
- Record the platform, Fortnite version, island code, whether the island is private, public, or published, and the time of the attempt.
If every island fails from the first join, return to the outage and network branches. If only an immediate rejoin fails, avoid repeatedly retrying for long periods and preserve the details for an in-game report.

Is a wired connection worth trying?
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a useful, optional diagnostic accessory when Wi-Fi packet loss or latency is suspected. Connect the device directly to the router and repeat the same matchmaking or island-join test. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless interference, distance, channel congestion, or router placement; the cable does not repair an Epic outage and is not a guaranteed Fortnite fix.

Submit a Fortnite bug report in-game when the status page shows no incident and Epic’s documented checks do not resolve the failure. Follow FortniteStatus for updates after filing. Epic’s cited guidance does not promise a response time, so treat the report as information for diagnosis rather than an immediate support ticket.
Include evidence that separates the possible causes
- Platform and device model, including whether it is PC, console, or mobile.
- Fortnite mode, UEFN island name or code, and whether it is private, public, or published.
- Whether the first join fails or the hang starts only after leaving and rejoining the same in-progress island.
- Approximate UTC or local time, duration of the Connecting screen, and whether the game returned to the lobby or crashed.
- Any exact error text, plus the network change that helped or failed.
This information lets Epic compare a broad service incident with a platform-specific, route-specific, or session-specific failure. Keep the wording factual; do not describe the community rejoin report as a confirmed universal diagnosis.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not keep changing settings while Epic is reporting an outage; wait for the service update first.
- Do not assume a green status page guarantees that your ISP route, device, or particular island session is healthy.
- Do not use Windows commands, Hosts-file edits, or launcher-file changes on a console or phone.
- Do not leave security software, proxies, or firewalls disabled permanently; restore protections after the test.
- Do not treat the anecdotal seven-minute console return or ten-minute PC crash as a guaranteed timer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Fortnite say Connecting and then send me back to the lobby?
A matchmaking or session request can time out even when login succeeds. Check the Public Status page, then note whether every mode behaves this way or only one island; a single-session failure points to a different branch than a broad outage.
Can changing DNS fix Fortnite matchmaking?
It can help when your current DNS path fails to resolve or reach an Epic endpoint, which is why Epic lists public DNS as a troubleshooting option. DNS changes will not restore matchmaking during server maintenance and should be tested one at a time.
Should I reinstall Fortnite for a Connecting-screen hang?
Reinstallation is not the first step in Epic’s documented connection sequence. Test the status page, router, DNS, clock, cache, proxy, and platform-specific settings first; reinstall only when a platform-specific support procedure indicates damaged installation files.
How long should I wait on the Connecting screen before quitting?
There is no official universal wait time or guaranteed fix time for this symptom. The roughly seven-minute console return and approximately ten-minute PC crash described in a 2025 community UEFN report are anecdotal and apply to that reported rejoin pattern, not every Fortnite connection attempt.
