Haruna and Bandai Azuma.

The reveal confirms the shape and character of Horizon Japan, but it does not provide a scale bar, square-mile figure, square-kilometer measurement, or official comparison with Forza Horizon 5. The map looks expansive, yet its exact playable area remains unconfirmed.
What the full Japan map reveal shows
The image presents a curated interpretation of Japan rather than a literal recreation of the entire Japanese archipelago. Its focus is a connected Horizon playground built around Tokyo City and the surrounding countryside, combining dense urban roads, suburbs, docks, industrial areas, rural routes, mountain passes, and alpine environments.
#1 Best Overall
- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
- Tokyo City: The urban core includes downtown streets and a large metropolitan area that Xbox describes as the biggest urban area in a Forza Horizon game.
- Tokyo’s outskirts: Suburban roads, industrial districts, docks, and less densely built-up areas extend the city setting beyond the downtown skyline.
- Japanese countryside: Rural roads and traditional-looking environments provide a contrast to the modern city.
- Mountain routes: Named locations include Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma, reinforcing the importance of winding elevation changes and touge-inspired driving.
- Snowy alpine areas: The playable world reaches into Japanese Alps-inspired environments, adding a colder and more mountainous biome.
- Major-road inspirations: Playground Games specifically calls out roads inspired by the C1 loop and Gingko Avenue.
Playground Games describes the setting as the series’ “most dense and vertical” map. That wording is significant: the reveal is not only promising a large horizontal space, but also a world with more elevation changes, stacked urban environments, steep mountain roads, and tighter contrasts between city and countryside.
Is Forza Horizon 6’s map the whole of Japan?
No. The official materials describe a fictionalized, curated Horizon interpretation centered on Tokyo and a broader surrounding region. The map should not be described as a drivable version of all Japan or as a geographically complete representation of the country.
That distinction matters because the image includes recognizable Japanese influences while compressing different types of scenery into one open-world racing environment. Tokyo streets, rural landscapes, alpine snow, traditional-looking areas, and famous-road inspirations are being brought together for exploration and racing—not presented as a precise national-scale map.
How big is the Forza Horizon 6 map?
There is still no official answer in numerical terms. Playground Games’ full-map reveal supplies a zoomed-out image and a list of featured environments, but it does not state the map’s area in square miles or kilometers. It also does not officially say that the map is twice the size of Forza Horizon 5, or provide another direct size comparison.
Fan estimates and secondary reports may speculate that Horizon Japan is substantially larger than the previous game, but those estimates should remain speculation until Playground Games publishes a measurement or a reliable scale reference. The defensible conclusion is that the map appears expansive and unusually varied, while its exact dimensions are unknown.

Why verticality may matter more than raw area
A square-mile figure would not fully describe the driving experience Playground Games is targeting. The developer’s emphasis on density and verticality suggests that Horizon Japan is designed around how much variety can be packed into reachable routes, not just how far the player can travel across the map.
Tokyo can provide tightly packed streets, traffic-like visual density, elevation changes, waterfront and industrial routes, and fast urban circuits. Outside the city, mountain passes can turn the road network into a series of technical climbs, descents, switchbacks, and scenic overlooks. Rural and alpine areas then create longer transitions and different driving conditions.
Seasonality is another part of the design. Official descriptions highlight multiple biomes and changing seasons, so the same broad region may take on a different appearance and driving character over time. The reveal confirms that environmental contrast is a central feature, although it does not yet explain every seasonal rule or how individual roads will change.
Japan, car culture, and the road network
Japan has been one of the most requested locations for Forza Horizon. Xbox said the country was a natural fit because of its car culture, distinctive urban and rural environments, and suitability for an exploration-focused open world.
The named roads and passes make the setting more specific than a generic “Japan” backdrop. C1-inspired urban routes point toward fast metropolitan driving, while Mt. Haruna and Bandai Azuma suggest a stronger focus on winding mountain roads. Together, they support a map built for contrasting styles: high-speed city runs, technical touge-style driving, scenic cruising, and off-city exploration.

Forza Horizon 6 release date and platforms
Forza Horizon 6 launched on May 19, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The official Xbox information lists Windows 10/11 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms, with PC access through the Xbox app and Steam.
The game is available in Standard, Deluxe, Premium, and Premium Upgrade forms. Microsoft’s launch information also says the Standard Edition is included with active Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Premium Edition and Premium Upgrade owners received early access beginning May 15, 2026, according to the official FAQ.
A PlayStation 5 version is planned for later in 2026, but the official launch information did not provide a firm PS5 release date at the time of the reveal and launch materials covered here. Players should therefore treat “later in 2026” as the confirmed window rather than assume a specific day.

Not confirmed
- The map’s area in square miles or square kilometers.
- A claim that it is twice as large as Forza Horizon 5.

Bottom line
The zoomed-out image is a meaningful map reveal because it finally shows the intended scope of Horizon Japan: a dense Tokyo metropolis connected to countryside, technical mountain roads, and snowy alpine scenery. It confirms a geographically varied world designed around Japanese car culture and vertical driving. It does not, however, settle the map-size debate. Until Playground Games publishes a scale or measurement, “large,” “dense,” and “varied” are supported descriptions; exact area claims and comparisons with Forza Horizon 5 are not.
