Forza Horizon Multiplayer Mode Not Working on PC: Fix Horizon Life, Teredo, and Convoys

If Forza Horizon multiplayer is not working on your PC, diagnose the connection in layers instead of reinstalling the game first. Confirm which Horizon release and PC store you use, check for an Xbox or Forza service incident, then run Windows Xbox networking and NAT/Teredo checks. If those are healthy, repair Xbox credentials and services, test the router and firewall path, apply the Forza Horizon 5 Home reset when relevant, and verify Xbox privacy controls. The exact error—such as “Teredo is unable to qualify,” “blocked server connectivity,” error 0x89235108, or a cancelled convoy matchmaking message—determines which branch to follow.

These instructions cover Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Steam installations on Windows. Labels can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so record the wording you see before changing anything.

Which Forza Horizon game and PC version are you troubleshooting?

Start by identifying the exact game, store, and message. “Forza Horizon multiplayer” can mean FH4, FH5, or another release, and Steam, the Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app use different sign-in and entitlement paths.

  • Write down the game name and edition (for example, FH4 or FH5), the store or launcher, your Windows version, and your country or region.
  • Copy the complete error text or code, including capitalization and punctuation.
  • Note whether solo play loads, whether Horizon Life or other online features are missing, and whether only convoys or all multiplayer activities fail.
  • Record whether the Xbox app and Microsoft account use the same account that owns the game.

This information prevents applying an FH5-only fix to another release and gives support a usable starting point.

Could an Xbox or Forza outage be causing the failure?

Yes. A server-side incident can make every local setting look correct, so check the current Xbox and Forza service-status pages before changing Windows. If friends in different locations fail at the same time, or the outage page reports Xbox multiplayer or a specific Horizon service, wait for the incident to clear and retest.

Forza Support’s April 13, 2026 troubleshooting article treats service checks as the first branch. A December 2, 2021 Forza community update documented launch-era FH5 matchmaking, connectivity, convoy-disappearance, Horizon Arcade, Eliminator, and Horizon Open problems; that historical account explains why a server check matters, but it is not evidence of an outage today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a server problem from a local problem

  • Likely service-side: multiple friends or regions fail simultaneously, status pages show an incident, or the game worked until a widespread maintenance event.
  • Likely local: only your PC fails, Xbox networking reports a NAT or Teredo error, changing networks changes the result, or the same account works on another device.

No reliable published percentage establishes how often PC multiplayer failures are caused by any particular layer, so do not treat an online “success rate” as a diagnostic fact.

How do I check Xbox networking, NAT, and Teredo on Windows?

Use Windows’ Xbox networking test before changing game files. A web browser can have full internet access while the Xbox multiplayer path is blocked.

  1. Open Settings and search for Xbox networking. On Windows versions that expose the page under Gaming, open that page; otherwise use the Xbox app’s network settings.
  2. Run the network check and read each result, especially internet connection, Xbox services, NAT type, and server connectivity.
  3. If the result says “Teredo is unable to qualify” or “blocked server connectivity,” keep the exact wording. Do not assume that a fast speed test disproves the result.
  4. Check that Windows date, time, time zone, and automatic synchronization are correct. An incorrect clock can prevent the authentication and tunnel setup that multiplayer needs.

Teredo is part of the Windows Xbox multiplayer path. Firewall policy, a disabled Windows Firewall, stopped Xbox services, security software, VPN-created rules, or incorrect system time can prevent it from qualifying. Do not disable your firewall permanently; the objective is to restore a valid, protected rule set.

What should I try first when the Xbox networking test fails?

Apply the reversible fixes in this order. Retest after each group so you know which change mattered.

1. Try a temporary wired connection

Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet, bypassing Wi-Fi for one test. A Cat6 cable or a USB Ethernet adapter is a diagnostic aid, not a cure: it cannot repair a service outage, privacy restriction, account credential, or Teredo policy. If wired works while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless isolation, signal quality, router firmware, or the router’s multiplayer filtering.

2. Reinitialize the network hardware

  1. Close Forza Horizon and the Xbox app.
  2. Turn off the modem and router, wait for them to finish powering down, then start the modem and wait until its connection is established.
  3. Start the router, wait for its indicators to settle, and restart the PC.
  4. Run Xbox networking again before opening the game.

If another Ethernet cable or router port is available, try it. Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance supports checking the physical path and trying another connection before more disruptive Windows changes.

3. Check firewall, VPN, and security software

Confirm that Windows Firewall is enabled with its default policy and that your security suite is not blocking Xbox services. Disconnect any VPN and temporarily remove only its network filter or firewall rule according to the vendor’s documented method; do not leave protection disabled. If the error appeared immediately after installing security or VPN software, that timing is a strong clue.

How do I fix error 0x89235108?

Error 0x89235108 commonly requires rebuilding Xbox account credentials rather than reinstalling Forza. Sign out first, then remove only the credential entries specified below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close Forza, the Xbox app, and Microsoft Store windows.
  2. Open Credential Manager from Windows Search.
  3. Select Windows Credentials, expand the Generic Credentials entries, and remove each entry whose name begins with Xbl. Do not delete unrelated work, school, browser, or password-manager credentials.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Open the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, sign in with the account that owns the game, and then launch Forza.

Removing those entries forces a fresh Xbox sign-in. You may be asked to authenticate again, and another person’s Windows profile on the same PC may need its own sign-in.

How do I clear the Xbox Identity Provider token cache?

A damaged token cache can leave Xbox networking or sign-in in a loop. Clear the two cache folders only when they are present, then sign in again.

  1. Exit Forza, Xbox, and Microsoft Store. In Task Manager, close any remaining Xbox or Gaming Services process that is visibly still running.
  2. Open File Explorer and paste %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages into the address bar.
  3. Open the folder whose name begins with Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider, then open its token-cache location under ACTokenBroker.
  4. Delete the Accounts and Cache folders if they exist. If one is absent, continue; do not delete the entire package folder.
  5. Restart Windows, sign in again to the Xbox app and Store, and repeat the Xbox networking test.

If Windows refuses deletion because a file is in use, close the apps again or restart and try before taking ownership of system folders.

Which Xbox services must be running?

Xbox Live Network Service, Xbox Live Game Save, and Xbox Live Auth Manager are part of the official PC troubleshooting sequence. Restart them rather than changing random services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Xbox Live Network Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  3. Repeat for Xbox Live Game Save and Xbox Live Auth Manager.
  4. Launch Xbox networking again, then test Forza.

Do not set unrelated services to Disabled. If a service repeatedly stops, note its status and any Windows error rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

National Instruments software can be a conflict

Forza Support identifies National Instruments services as a possible software conflict. If that software is installed and the multiplayer failure began after it was added or updated, stop its services temporarily, reboot, and test. Restore the services afterward if another application needs them; this is a diagnostic isolation step, not a recommendation to remove the software permanently.

How do I resolve “Teredo is unable to qualify” or “blocked server connectivity”?

Those messages mean Windows could not establish the Xbox multiplayer route, not that your download speed is too low. Work through the network-policy causes before attempting a game reinstall.

  • Verify Windows Firewall is enabled and its inbound and outbound policy has not been replaced by a third-party suite.
  • Disconnect VPN software and check whether it installed a virtual adapter or firewall rule that remains active.
  • Confirm the three Xbox services above are running.
  • Synchronize the system clock and time zone.
  • Test through Ethernet and, if possible, another router or trusted network to distinguish the PC from the home network.

Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance also supports resetting TCP/IP and DNS when appropriate. Use those commands only after recording your current network setup, because custom DNS, static addresses, or corporate policies may be intentional. Windows Network reset is a later option: it removes and reinstalls network adapters and can require you to reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure VPN software, so reserve it for a persistent local configuration problem.

Why can I play solo but not join Horizon Life or a convoy?

Solo loading proves that the game files and at least part of your account entitlement work; it does not prove that Xbox multiplayer, NAT traversal, or privacy permissions work. Convoys add an account-permission and matchmaking layer on top of the base connection.

Check Xbox privacy and online-safety controls

For the message “matchmaking was cancelled because your Horizon Convoy changed,” open the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for the account that plays the game. Set both controls below to Allow:

  • You can join cross-network play
  • You can join multiplayer games

Apply the change, sign out and back in if prompted, then have the convoy leader recreate the convoy. Child or family-managed accounts may require the family organizer to change these controls; a local Windows administrator cannot always override an Xbox account restriction.

Check account and store alignment

Make sure the Xbox profile used in-game is the one with the multiplayer entitlement and that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app are not signed into different accounts. On Steam, the Steam ownership account still links to an Xbox profile for Horizon services; changing the Windows account without changing the linked Xbox profile can produce confusing entitlement or invitation behavior.

What is the FH5 Home reset, and when should I use it?

The Home reset is a Forza Horizon 5-specific gameplay-state fix for persistent online connectivity symptoms. It is not a general Teredo repair and should be used only after the Windows and account checks above.

  1. Load into FH5 and drive to a house in Mexico.
  2. Choose Set as Home.
  3. Leave the house and wait for the autosave to complete. Do not force-close the game while the save indicator is active.
  4. Fully close FH5, including its launcher process if it remains open.
  5. Restart the game and test Horizon Life or a convoy.

If the game cannot reach the map or never saves, return to the network and account branches rather than repeating the Home change.

Should I reset TCP/IP, DNS, or Windows Network Reset?

Use these as escalation steps, not as the opening move. They can clear a damaged local configuration, but they also remove deliberate settings and do not fix a remote outage or an account block.

  • TCP/IP or DNS reset: reasonable when ordinary websites work inconsistently, the adapter has stale settings, or another network test points to this PC. Capture any custom DNS, proxy, static IP, or corporate settings first.
  • Windows Network Reset: reserve for a persistent adapter configuration failure after rebooting, trying Ethernet, and checking the router. Expect to reconnect to wireless networks and reinstall or reconfigure some VPN adapters.
  • Game reinstall: last among local actions. Reinstalling cannot repair Xbox privacy permissions, Xbl credentials, Teredo policy, a stopped service, or a Forza outage.

What should I send to support if nothing works?

Escalate to Xbox Support for Windows networking or account controls, Windows Support for adapter and operating-system faults, and Forza Support for game-specific behavior. Include evidence so the next team does not repeat the same checklist.

  • Exact Horizon release, edition, PC store or launcher, Windows version, region, and Xbox profile type.
  • Full error text or code and when it first appeared.
  • Whether single-player works; whether Horizon Life, events, convoys, or every online feature fails.
  • Xbox networking results for internet, NAT type, server connectivity, and Teredo.
  • Whether Ethernet, a router power cycle, another network, or a VPN disconnect changed the result.
  • Whether you cleared the Identity Provider cache, removed Xbl credentials, restarted the three Xbox services, checked privacy controls, and—only for FH5—reset Home.
  • Any recent firewall, security-suite, VPN, router, Windows, or game update.

Attach screenshots only after hiding email addresses, product keys, IP addresses, and other account secrets. A support ticket should state what changed after each test, not merely list every fix you attempted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a mobile hotspot to prove whether my home router is the problem?

Yes, a brief test on a trusted mobile hotspot can separate the PC from the home router or ISP path. It may have high latency, data limits, or carrier NAT, so a failed hotspot test does not prove the game is broken; a successful test strongly implicates the home network.

Does changing DNS make Teredo qualify?

Usually not by itself. DNS can resolve a name-resolution fault, but Teredo qualification is more often affected by firewall policy, VPN filters, stopped services, clock settings, or router behavior. Treat DNS changes as a targeted network-reset step, not a guaranteed multiplayer fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an Open NAT guarantee that every convoy will connect?

No. Open NAT removes one common traversal barrier, but Xbox privacy permissions, account entitlements, server incidents, game state, and the other players’ connections can still prevent a convoy. Test the specific activity after confirming the account and service layers.

Can I keep playing offline while waiting for multiplayer support?

Generally, yes: locally available solo activities can continue when online services are unavailable, although some events, progression synchronization, and features require a connection. Avoid deleting saves or changing account links while troubleshooting, and let the game finish any autosave before closing it.
