fpeditax.dll is a Microsoft FrontPage Editor application component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that fpeditax.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Microsoft application that requested it instead of downloading a replacement file.
The file has appeared in several Microsoft web-authoring products, including FrontPage 2000 and 2003, Visual Studio web-authoring components, and SharePoint Designer 2010 and 2013. The correct repair depends on the executable, installation folder, architecture, and product version involved.

Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because fpeditax.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fpeditax.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fpeditax.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fpeditax.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by fpeditax.dll is missing. It does not always mean that the named DLL itself has disappeared.

Inspect the application path
Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, check Target and Start in.
Common locations include:
- An Office 2000 or Office 2003 folder
- A Visual Studio installation folder
- A SharePoint Designer folder
- An application-specific
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86)directory
A Microsoft Q&A crash record shows FrontPage 2003 loading the file from:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOFFICE11FPEDITAX.DLL
That is an application-owned location. It is not evidence that the file belongs in a Windows directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck whether the file is present
In File Explorer, search the relevant Microsoft product folder for fpeditax.dll. If found, right-click it, select Properties, and open the Details tab.
Check:
- File description
- Product name
- File version
- Original filename
- File location
Do not select a replacement merely because its version number is higher. Microsoft used different builds in different products and releases. A FrontPage file, Visual Studio file, and SharePoint Designer file are not interchangeable.
Fix 1: Repair the Microsoft application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, plus any restart
This is the safest and most likely solution when the file is missing, damaged, or removed during an incomplete installation.
Repair FrontPage or Office
If FrontPage is installed from original media:
- Insert the original FrontPage or Office installation disc.
- Open This PC.
- Open the disc and run
setup.exe. - Choose the maintenance or repair option.
- Select Repair or Repair Office, depending on the installer.
- Allow Setup to restore the original application files.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Start FrontPage again.
For FrontPage 2000, the documented recovery procedure was to rename the damaged DLL, then run Setup in maintenance mode. If the file exists in the original Office folder, rename it rather than deleting it:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →fpeditax.dll
Rename it to:
fpeditax.dll.old
Then run the original Setup program and choose the repair option. Renaming preserves a copy for troubleshooting and prevents Setup from treating the existing file as usable.
If you no longer have the original installation media, do not substitute a DLL from another product. Locate the matching Microsoft installation source or restore the application from a properly backed-up installation.
Repair Visual Studio 2010
If the error appears when devenv.exe starts or when Visual Studio opens Design View:
- Close Visual Studio.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the Visual Studio installation.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair if the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Apply the Microsoft Visual Studio update that matches your installation.
Microsoft documented a Visual Studio 2010 Design View crash involving FPEDITAX.DLL.LaidView::FindProperties. The related update is listed by Microsoft as vs10sp1-kb2548139-x86.exe. It is intended for the matching Visual Studio 2010 environment, not as a general DLL download.

Use the official Visual Studio 2010 update or verify the applicable package through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Repair SharePoint Designer 2010
For SharePoint Designer 2010:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010.
- Click Change.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct service pack and applicable Microsoft updates.
Microsoft update records document fpeditax.dll as part of SharePoint Designer 2010. Install the correct base edition first, then apply the required service pack and updates. SharePoint Designer 2010 Service Pack 2 is identified by Microsoft as KB2687463 in the Office 2010 SP2 package list.

Repair SharePoint Designer 2013
SharePoint Designer 2013 has separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select SharePoint Designer 2013.
- Click Change and choose Repair, if available.
- If repair fails, uninstall SharePoint Designer 2013.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer matching the original architecture.
- Install the base product.
- Apply the appropriate service pack and updates.
- Restart and test the program.
Use Microsoft’s SharePoint Designer 2013 download page. Microsoft also provides separate 32-bit Service Pack 1 and 64-bit Service Pack 1 downloads.
If repair restores the file and the application starts normally, stop there. Installing additional runtimes or copying another DLL is unnecessary.
Fix 2: Match the architecture and product version
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Older Microsoft authoring programs are frequently 32-bit, even when Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit FrontPage installation needs its matching 32-bit component. Replacing it with a 64-bit file from SharePoint Designer or another product can create a new loading error.
Check the Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
This tells you whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, but it does not prove that the application uses the same architecture. Check the application’s installer or product documentation as well.
Check the application architecture
Look at the application’s installation folder:
C:Program Files (x86)usually contains 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications, although older installers do not always follow this convention.
SharePoint Designer’s official downloads explicitly separate x86 and x64 packages. Install the same architecture as the existing product rather than selecting the newest-looking file.
Microsoft records document different builds across the product family. For example, Microsoft has documented fpeditax.dll as an x86 Visual Studio 2010 component and has separately documented builds used by SharePoint Designer 2010 and 2013. This is why file version matching must be done against the parent application, not against an online list.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
An antivirus product may quarantine an application file after an update, disk problem, or detection. A quarantine event does not automatically mean the detection was false.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the Microsoft application folder or
fpeditax.dll. - Expand the event and review the path and detection details.
Microsoft documents the available actions in Protection History.
Recommended Free Tools
Only restore or allow the file if all of the following are true:
- The path belongs to the installed Microsoft product.
- The file was installed as part of that product.
- The installation source is trusted.
- The detection has been reviewed and is not an unknown replacement.
In most cases, repairing the parent application is safer than permanently allowing a quarantined copy. After repair, run a full security scan and test the application again.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
fpeditax.dll is normally an application file, so SFC is not the first repair. Windows System File Checker does not generally restore a missing FrontPage, Visual Studio, or SharePoint Designer component.

- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Microsoft application repair.
Microsoft provides the command sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
A successful SFC repair may report that corrupted files were found and repaired. That does not guarantee that fpeditax.dll was restored, because the file is usually owned by the application rather than Windows.
Repeating SFC without identifying what changed is rarely useful. If you are dealing with several component repairs and want a scan to identify damaged system areas before manually interpreting DISM and SFC results, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; its repair functions are provided by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 5: Reinstall after an incomplete or failed update
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
A partial uninstall, failed Office change, disk error, or interrupted update can leave the executable present while removing one of its supporting files.
Before reinstalling:
- Back up FrontPage, Visual Studio, or SharePoint Designer projects.
- Record the product edition and architecture.
- Save any license or installation information.
- Check whether the original installation media is available.
- Review Control Panel > Programs and Features for multiple versions of the same product.
Then:
- Uninstall only the affected product.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the matching original product.
- Apply its supported service packs and updates.
- Start the application before adding extensions or custom components.
Do not combine files from FrontPage, Visual Studio, and SharePoint Designer to create a replacement installation. These products may use similarly named components but are not interchangeable sources.
Fix 6: Consider System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an installation, update, driver change, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Click System Restore.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs but normally does not change personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
If the problem began after antivirus quarantine, use the security history and application repair steps first. System Restore is not a substitute for checking whether the file was legitimately removed.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the crash points to a driver
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A missing-file launch error does not normally require a driver update. Driver work is relevant when FrontPage, Visual Studio, or SharePoint Designer launches but crashes during rendering, editing, printing, or hardware-accelerated display operations.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Printers, Human Interface Devices, and Network adapters.
- Right-click the device involved when the crash occurs.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Do not remove unrelated devices or install a random driver package to address a missing fpeditax.dll.
If several devices need checking and you want to avoid hunting through manufacturers’ pages and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; installation of drivers is handled by the full version, and it is not required for an application-owned DLL repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command.
The normal documented fix for fpeditax.dll is to repair or reinstall FrontPage, Visual Studio, or SharePoint Designer. Running a command such as this is therefore not recommended as a routine step:
regsvr32 fpeditax.dll
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean the file needs to be replaced. It usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered in that way. Microsoft describes the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.

Why downloading fpeditax.dll is risky
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- The wrong product build
- The wrong architecture
- An incomplete set of dependencies
- A file that does not match the application’s installation records
Even an authentic DLL may not fix the underlying installation damage. It can also create a version conflict when placed beside a different Microsoft product.
Do not copy fpeditax.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not the normal installation location for this application component. If advanced recovery is unavoidable, extract the exact file from the original installation media or an identical trusted installation and place it in the original application directory. Product repair remains preferable.
Causes of fpeditax.dll errors
| Cause | What usually helps |
|---|---|
| Failed installation or partial uninstall | Repair or reinstall the owning product |
| Office modification | Repair the matching Office or FrontPage installation |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path, then repair the application |
| Wrong x86 or x64 package | Reinstall the matching architecture |
| Damaged application file | Use original media or the official installer |
| Visual Studio Design View crash | Repair Visual Studio and apply the matching update |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent system change | Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists |
| Obsolete application incompatibility | Test in a controlled legacy environment |
What to do if repair still fails
Collect evidence before trying another replacement:
- Open Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the crash.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, and exception code.
- Confirm the application path.
- Check the installed DLL’s file version and architecture.
- Review antivirus Protection History.
- Check whether the disk reports errors.
- Test the application under a new Windows user profile.
- Review the application’s installation logs.
If the event names FRONTPG.EXE as the faulting application and FPEDITAX.DLL as the faulting module, treat it as an application crash rather than a simple missing-file problem. Repair, update, or replace the obsolete parent application instead of repeatedly copying the DLL.
A clean test under a new Windows profile can identify profile-specific settings. If the product still fails after a matching reinstall, an incompatible legacy application or damaged Windows environment may require a controlled older Windows installation or virtualized environment.
Important support and compatibility limits
FrontPage 2003 support ended on April 9, 2014. SharePoint Designer 2013 support ended on July 15, 2026. These products do not have a modern, standalone fpeditax.dll runtime that should be installed into Windows.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, preserve the original product installer, use a separate test environment where appropriate, and avoid exposing obsolete authoring software to unnecessary network access. Do not assume that a successful installation means the product is supported or secure.
FAQ
Is fpeditax.dll a Windows file?
No. It is normally an application-owned Microsoft web-authoring component associated with FrontPage, Visual Studio web-authoring features, or SharePoint Designer.
Does fpeditax.dll belong only to FrontPage 2000?
Its lineage includes FrontPage 2000 and 2003, but Microsoft records also document the component in Visual Studio and SharePoint Designer. Identify the executable and installation path before repairing it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a general solution. Those packages do not replace the owning application’s fpeditax.dll. Install them only if the specific parent application reports a separate missing dependency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I register the file with regsvr32?
Usually not. Repair or reinstall the parent product. regsvr32 applies only when a DLL is designed for registration and exposes the required registration entry point.
Can I copy a working file from another computer?
Only as an advanced recovery step when the other computer has the identical product, release, architecture, and trusted installation. Repair from original media or an official installer is safer.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the DLL is present?
A dependency required by fpeditax.dll may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the application may be loading an incompatible build. Check the application repair state and Event Viewer rather than copying another DLL.
What is the correct fix?
Find the program that displays the error, match its architecture and release, then repair or reinstall that specific Microsoft product. Avoid System32, random DLL downloads, and universal registry fixes.
