If you want a short psychological horror game you can play tonight, choose Mouthwashing for a story that lingers, Iron Lung or The Exit 8 for a tense hour or less, Anatomy for a cheap haunted-house experiment, or Fears to Fathom — Home Alone for a free scare. Fragments is the closest match if what you specifically want is trauma-focused memory puzzles, maze-like spaces and tormentors—but it is planned for Steam on 10 December 2026, not yet released. Its demo is downloadable now; the full game’s price and reviews have not been published.

What is Fragments, and when can you play it?

Fragments is a planned first-person psychological horror game for Windows on Steam, scheduled for 10 December 2026. The store lists Lazar Varagic, Alex X and Vidan Tomic as developers and Tiny Cup Studios as publisher; the game is single-player, supports Family Sharing, and lists English interface and full audio. Valve’s page says it is not yet available and has no user reviews. A downloadable demo is available, but its length and how much of the campaign it includes are not established here.

The official pitch is “Your mind is shattered. Step into a first-person psychological horror where you must relive your deepest trauma, uncover fragments of your past, piece them back together and face the tormentors that haunt your mind.” The premise is not just a sequence of scares: the store describes a mind that buried the truth after a loss, with each loop bringing the player closer to facing it.

What the full game promises

Tiny Cup Studios describes two traumatic periods, each tied to a maze-like environment: a dark, suffocating forest and an eerie underground hotel. Each environment contains three memory fragments, for six in total. Puzzles are designed around the memories they unlock, and the player can run, hide or fight against inner tormentors. The listed playtime is 1.5–2 hours, depending on choices and skill; collecting all six fragments requires three unique runs.

That makes Fragments a more structured prospect than a conventional short walking simulator, at least on paper: the advertised replay loop is built around collecting different pieces of a story, while its threats offer more than one response. Those are storefront claims, not a basis for assuming how satisfying the puzzles, combat or alternate runs will feel in the finished game.

What is not known yet

The Steam page has no published price, no review score and no Metacritic score. Its listed requirements are Windows 10/11 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD R5 1600X equivalent, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1650-class graphics card and 3 GB storage at minimum; the recommended specification is an Intel Core i5-12400F or Ryzen 5 5600X, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3060-class card. A console version is not established. If you want to play without committing money before release, the official demo is the practical option; do not assume it represents the full 1.5–2-hour campaign.

Which short horror game should you play first?

Start with the type of fear and the time you have, not a single overall ranking. Mouthwashing is the strongest fit for a story-led evening; Iron Lung and The Exit 8 work better when the window is short; Anatomy is the closest inexpensive alternative to the idea of a haunted interior mind.

  • One evening and a story that stays: choose Mouthwashing. Its nonlinear account of a stranded ship’s crew turns guilt, unreliable perception and body horror into a compact narrative. Games Genie’s Henk-Jan Uijterlinde called it “Short. Nasty. Stays with you.” Published estimates vary, so a sensible expectation is about 2.5–4 hours rather than a precise finish time. Valve’s 2026 storefront snapshot gives it 95% positive from 24,988 English-language reviews; VGTimes cites a Metacritic score of 88.
  • Under an hour and a claustrophobic premise: pick Iron Lung. You pilot a tiny submarine through an ocean of blood on an alien moon, with limited senses doing much of the work. David Szymanski’s Steam description calls it “A short experience intended to be finished in under an hour.” Valve’s 2026 snapshot lists 92% positive from 8,550 English-language reviews, and First Checkpoint cites a Metacritic 82.
  • Under an hour and a simple rule to follow: pick The Exit 8. Its official instructions are “Don’t overlook any anomalies.” “If you find anomalies, turn back immediately.” “If you don’t find anomalies, do not turn back.” It is about noticing what changes in a familiar-looking corridor, not piecing together traumatic memories. KOTAKE CREATE lists a 15–60-minute playtime; Valve’s 2026 snapshot lists 93% positive from 5,292 English-language reviews.
  • Cheap, brief and unsettling rather than loud: try Anatomy. Kitty Horrorshow’s description begins, “Every house is haunted.” You explore a suburban house, collect cassette tapes and consider the physiology of domestic architecture. Its developer estimates 30–45 minutes and notes multiple endings; itch.io listed it at $2.99 or more and recorded 4.8 out of 5 stars from 996 ratings in 2026.
  • Free and very short: start with Fears to Fathom — Home Alone. The first episode follows 14-year-old Miles while he is home alone, using the frame of a survivor narrating a short story. HorrorGameplay estimated about 25 minutes; Valve’s 2026 snapshot lists 88% positive from 5,839 English-language reviews. Its tension comes from a mundane situation turning threatening, not a puzzle maze or supernatural memory loop.

David of HorrorGameplay put the time-based fork plainly on 28 October 2026: “if you want one short horror game tonight, start with The Exit 8 or Iron Lung. If you want something story-heavy and don’t mind about three hours, play Mouthwashing.” That is a useful starting point when the main question is simply, “I have one free evening and want a scare.”

How do the games differ from Fragments?

The nearest substitute depends on which part of Fragments appeals to you. Its advertised combination is memory-fragment puzzles, maze spaces and tormentors; no released game in this set is established as an exact match. These are neighboring choices by mood, length or mechanic, not confirmed clones.

For a narrative built around a buried catastrophe: Mouthwashing

Mouthwashing is the closest thematic neighbor. Both games promise a story in which a catastrophe and its aftermath are reconstructed piece by piece, and guilt becomes part of the horror. But Mouthwashing is a released, widely reviewed narrative about the five crew members of the Tulpar, a space freighter stranded in perpetual sunset. Its official pitch ends, “God is not watching,” and its store warns, “Your eyes are lying.”

Expect a nonlinear before-and-after structure and extreme violence rather than Fragments’ stated puzzle-per-memory design and run/hide/fight encounters. The game’s mature-content warning describes extreme violence, gore and mutilation. Its 95% Steam figure and Metacritic 88 make it a better-supported choice if you want a finished short narrative now; neither rating predicts whether its disturbing subject matter will suit you.

For haunted architecture: Anatomy

Anatomy is the closest low-cost stopgap for the feeling of an interior space turning into a psychological threat. It is much shorter than Fragments’ stated campaign and centers its unease on a house, tapes and suggestion, rather than two trauma-linked mazes and six collectible fragments. Kitty Horrorshow’s design is less about a conventional monster arriving on cue; Playboy.com’s quote on the itch.io page says, “It doesn’t aim to startle you with a big monster or a loud noise. It’s anything but predictable. And that’s exactly what horror should be.”

The trade-off is that Anatomy is an experimental micro horror game, not a compact version of Fragments. Its developer lists flashing images and body horror among content concerns. The itch.io page’s CoolGhosts.net quote—“I don’t sleep in my house anymore, because I’m afraid of what it’s going to do to me.”—signals the kind of lingering, interpretive unease it aims for.

For a one-mechanic pressure cooker: Iron Lung

Iron Lung trades story reconstruction for sensory restriction: the player operates a submarine in a hostile place and has little direct visual information. It is the better pick if your available time is under an hour and you want dread from isolation and limited perception. Critics quoted on its Steam page underscore its compact design: Bloody Disgusting wrote, “It draws you in, ratchets the tension, and ends with a bang,” while Destructoid called it “the perfect short-form horror experience.”

Its single central setup is a different proposition from a set of memory puzzles and multiple story runs. That is a feature if you want a concentrated scare, but a mismatch if the point of Fragments for you is piecing together a personal history.

For an anomaly loop: The Exit 8

The Exit 8 makes observation the whole challenge: keep moving when a corridor seems normal, turn back when you notice an anomaly. It is a strong low-cost option for a short session and a poor substitute for a narrative maze. The loop asks you to detect environmental differences and follow rules; it does not advertise Fragments’ trauma narrative, memory collectibles or combat choices.

For lo-fi, fragmented unease: Paratopic

Paratopic follows the smuggling of contraband VHS tapes through a fractured, lo-fi experience. Serenity Forge describes a leisurely playthrough as about 45 minutes. The result is closer to a waking nightmare or damaged-memory montage than a conventional story puzzle: a useful choice if strangeness matters more to you than polished narrative clarity. Its 78% positive rating from 1,379 Steam reviews in Valve’s 2026 snapshot is notably lower than the other highly rated short picks here, so it is best treated as a more divisive experiment rather than the safest recommendation.

Waypoint’s Steam-page quote called it “probably the most important first-person game this year,” while Destructoid said it “sticks with you.” Those are critical judgments, not a consensus guarantee. If you want a clear explanation of events, choose another title; if you want a short, unsettling work that leaves interpretation open, it may be the right fit.

For interface-based or retro horror: Home Safety Hotline and FAITH

Home Safety Hotline is an analog-horror-inspired telephone operator simulator set around a 1990s catalog of pests and household hazards. Its interface and act of diagnosing problems are central to the fear, which makes it a different flavor from Fragments’ first-person maze exploration. Valve’s 2026 snapshot lists 91% positive from 2,571 English-language Steam reviews. PCGamesN called it “one of the first must-plays of 2024.”

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is a three-chapter retro occult game, not a micro horror experience: HorrorGameplay estimated about 4.5 hours. Its 8-bit presentation and garbled cassette-like audio are part of its style, and Eurogamer’s Steam-page quote says it is “Smarter than it looks, deeper than it looks, scarier than it looks.” Choose it for pixel-art occult horror and a longer commitment, not to replicate Fragments’ contemporary first-person presentation or stated 1.5–2-hour length.

For a shipped mansion-and-memory game: Dead Take

Dead Take is a first-person psychological horror game set in a mansion, with USB and memory-card splicing and an FMV-adjacent presentation. Its tags make it a closer mechanical neighbor than the short observation games, but the available Steam-page information does not establish a completion time. It is already released and has 87% positive from 772 Steam reviews in Valve’s 2026 snapshot; the Steam store widget reports Metacritic 76. Its listed GPU target is a GTX 1060-class card with 15 GB storage, compared with Fragments’ stated GTX 1650 minimum and 3 GB storage. Those requirements alone do not establish which game runs better on a particular PC.

What if you want a micro horror game or an analog scare?

For a genuinely tiny commitment, SEPTEMBER 1999 lasts exactly five minutes and thirty seconds, according to IndieGameInsight (2026), and is described on Steam as a free VHS found-footage experience. Assessment Examination is free on itch.io and runs approximately 10–15 minutes, according to Wenderly Games via IndieGameInsight (2026). How Fish Is Made is another free short option, with VGTimes estimating 20–30 minutes. These titles are useful when “finish in one sitting” means a few minutes, but their brevity and format are not evidence that they have the same scope as Fragments.

If you specifically want the best analog horror games rather than trauma-focused psychological horror, begin with Home Safety Hotline: obsolete technology is part of its play system, not only a visual filter. No Players Online, Anatomy, Paratopic and SEPTEMBER 1999 offer other VHS, interface or degraded-media-adjacent moods. Fragments is tagged psychological horror and short; the information available does not present it as analog horror.

Short horror is not simply long horror with less content. It can use a constrained mechanic, a compact space or a sudden exit to keep uncertainty concentrated. Kotaku’s Zack Kotzer described the genre as “A genre that rewards a well-timed exit.” First Checkpoint wrote, “Horror might be the genre that benefits most from constraint.” Culture Combine’s 2026 account of short-form horror put it this way: “There is a distinct cruelty to short-form horror,” and “brevity acts as an amplifier.” That helps explain why a five-minute VHS piece and a three-hour narrative can both work, while serving very different evenings.

Should you wait for Fragments?

Wait if the specific combination you want is the draw: trauma and memory fragments, puzzles tailored to those memories, a forest and an underground hotel, tormentors you can evade or confront, and three runs to collect six fragments. The announced design is unusually precise about those elements, but it remains a pre-release promise rather than a finished, reviewed game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play something else now if your priority is a known experience, an established price or a clear runtime. Choose Mouthwashing for the story-led option; Iron Lung or The Exit 8 for an under-an-hour session; Anatomy for inexpensive haunted-interior suggestion; or Fears to Fathom — Home Alone when the budget is zero. If you want to sample the announced game without paying, download the official Fragments demo and judge that build on its own merits.

What should you know about content and PC requirements?

Check each game’s store page before buying if particular themes or visual effects are a concern. The developer’s Fragments content notice says: “This game contains depictions of attempted suicide, death, violence and alcohol abuse.” Mouthwashing warns of extreme violence, gore and mutilation. The Anatomy page warns about flashing images and body horror. These are meaningful differences in content, not just differences in how scary the games are.

For Fragments, the official minimum PC requirements are Windows 10/11 64-bit, Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD R5 1600X equivalent, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or equivalent, and 3 GB storage. The recommended configuration is Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 16 GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or equivalent. The game’s release is planned for Windows Steam; the page lists single-player and Family Sharing, with English interface and full audio. No console release is established.

How we picked these comparisons

The choices are organized around the decision a short-horror player actually faces: time available, kind of fear, narrative versus mechanic, price and whether a game is already playable. Mouthwashing represents the story-heavy one-evening option; Iron Lung and The Exit 8 represent compact, released experiences; Anatomy is a cheap haunted-interior alternative; the remaining games show where lo-fi, analog, retro occult and mansion-puzzle horror fit. Review figures are attributed to the named storefront or publication and its stated 2026 snapshot; they are not a substitute for genre fit or content preferences.
