Players accused FragPunk of using AI-generated artwork in March 2025 after a promotional image appeared to show a character missing a finger. The discussion also raised suspicions about other menu art, but the available evidence does not establish that any of the disputed artwork was made with generative AI.
What prompted the allegation
FragPunk is a free-to-play 5v5 hero shooter developed by Bad Guitar Studio and published by NetEase Games. Steam lists its release date as March 6, 2025; NetEase also announced a global PC launch on that date.
The controversy centered on promotional or shop artwork that players said showed a character with a missing finger. For some viewers, the apparent anatomical flaw suggested AI generation. Other comments in the discussion focused on the image’s presentation rather than its origin.
Why players disagreed about the image
In a Steam Community discussion, a commenter suggested the apparent missing digit could result from a mistake isolating or compositing an in-game character model. A Reddit thread likewise argued that promotional imagery depicted existing 3D characters. These are community explanations, not verified accounts of how the art was made.

Other players questioned additional menu backgrounds or cosmetic artwork, saying those images looked AI-generated. Those suspicions concern separate assets and do not independently prove anything about the promotional image that sparked the dispute.
What is—and is not—established
- Established: Players raised an AI-art allegation in March 2025, with a missing-finger appearance in promotional imagery as its central example. Destructoid covered that allegation and characterized the available evidence as inconclusive.
- Also established: Players offered competing interpretations, including possible AI errors and a model-isolation or compositing mistake.
- Not established: Whether the disputed image, other menu artwork, or any particular asset in the game was generated with AI.
No verifiable statement from Bad Guitar Studio or NetEase, production files, or asset audit confirming AI use was identified in the reporting reviewed. Nor does the community counter-explanation prove that the image came from a 3D model. The responsible conclusion is that the allegation circulated, while the artwork’s provenance remains unresolved.

What Steam’s AI disclosure context means
In January 2026, PC Gamer described revised wording in Valve’s Steam AI disclosure form. Its account distinguishes pre-generated AI content shipped with a game and consumed by players from behind-the-scenes uses of AI as an efficiency tool. That policy context helps explain what a disclosure may cover; it does not show whether FragPunk used AI for the disputed art, or establish how any specific asset was produced.

FragPunk did face criticism over artwork that some players thought looked AI-generated, particularly an image that appeared to show a missing finger. The discussion documents suspicion and competing explanations—not confirmation of AI use. Without verifiable production evidence or a statement from the developer or publisher, claims about the art’s origin should remain qualified.
