Decky LSFG-VK makes it much easier to use Lossless Scaling-style frame generation on Steam Deck and other Linux handhelds. But it is not an official Lossless Scaling product, and it does not double the Steam Deck’s real performance. The plugin inserts generated frames between frames rendered by a game, which can make motion look smoother while preserving the input feel and simulation rate of the lower base frame rate.
The underlying technology is a community Linux/Vulkan port called lsfg-vk. The Decky plugin provides a controller-friendly way to install and configure it from Game Mode.

What Lossless Scaling and LSFG-VK actually are
Lossless Scaling is a paid Windows application on Steam. Its LSFG technology can generate intermediate frames, alongside image-scaling features and fixed frame multipliers.
SteamOS does not have native official support for the Windows application. Instead, lsfg-vk is a community-built Linux/Vulkan port that makes LSFG usable on SteamOS and other Linux systems. Decky LSFG-VK is a separate, unofficial Decky Loader plugin that simplifies installing and configuring that port.

It increases displayed FPS, not real game performance
Frame generation does not make the game engine render twice as many frames or simulate input twice as quickly. With a stable 30 FPS base, 2x generation may produce motion that appears close to 60 FPS, but the game is still rendering and responding at roughly 30 FPS.
That distinction matters because frame generation adds GPU work and can introduce latency or visual errors. If the original frame rate fluctuates, the generated output can also stutter or show inconsistent pacing. A locked 40 FPS is generally a better candidate than a game jumping between 25 and 45 FPS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Base rate | Possible generated output | Practical expectation |
|---|---|---|
| 30 FPS | About 60 FPS with 2x | Usable for some slower-paced games, but latency and artifacts remain possible |
| 40 FPS | About 80 FPS with 2x | Often a stronger compromise if the frame rate is stable |
| 45 FPS | About 90 FPS with 2x | Potentially suitable for a 90 Hz display |
| 60 FPS | About 120 FPS with 2x | Better motion quality, but demanding on Steam Deck hardware |
Fixed 3x and 4x modes are also available in the documented plugin path, but more generated frames are not automatically better. Higher multipliers increase processing demands and can amplify ghosting, HUD artifacts and uneven pacing.

What the controversy is actually about
The 2025 dispute around the plugin concerned communication, labeling, recommended settings and support—not documented proof that the plugin is malware or that frame generation itself is fraudulent.
lsfg-vk creator PancakeTAS said the plugin had been released without the requested coordination, included misleading option labels and promoted settings they considered poor. The criticized guidance included approximately 30% flow scale with Performance Mode disabled. Later guidance favored roughly 85–100% flow scale with Performance Mode enabled, though that is developer guidance rather than a universal best setting.
A later update characterized the dispute as the result of poor communication, said major labeling problems had been corrected and confirmed that the Decky plugin would remain unofficial rather than becoming supported through the lsfg-vk Discord.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe sensible conclusion is that this is a support and documentation dispute. Users should know which project they are asking for help: the Lossless Scaling developers support the original Windows application, while the plugin has its own community support channel.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Installation: the documented stable route
Before you start
- A Steam Deck or compatible Linux handheld.
- Decky Loader.
- A purchased copy of Lossless Scaling. The Steam listing showed $6.99 when checked, but price and regional availability can change.
- A game that works with the required launch option and enough GPU headroom for frame generation.
Lossless Scaling’s store listing identifies Windows 10 version 2004 or newer as the application’s stated operating-system requirement. SteamOS use depends on the community Linux port rather than native official Linux support.
Manual ZIP installation
- Install Lossless Scaling through Steam.
- Install Decky Loader if it is not already installed.
- In Game Mode, open Decky Loader and select the settings cog.
- Enable Developer Mode, then open the Developer section.
- Choose Install Plugin from Zip and select the downloaded
decky-lsfg-vk.zipfile. - Open the new Decky LSFG-VK plugin and select Install lsfg-vk.
- Configure the multiplier and quality/performance options.
- Add this launch option to the game in Steam’s Properties menu:
~/lsfg %command%
- Restart the game and adjust the plugin settings from Decky.
Steam Deck HQ reported Decky Store availability in late 2025, but the project’s current repository documentation still describes manual ZIP installation. Check the live Decky catalog and the project’s release page when installing; use the manual route if the plugin is not listed there.
Recommended starting settings
- Start with Fixed 2x.
- Use the game’s limiter or SteamOS limiter to establish a stable base rate.
- Enable Performance Mode if the Deck is GPU-limited.
- Start flow scale in the higher range suggested by the lsfg-vk developer—approximately 85–100%—then lower it if performance is insufficient.
- Compare motion clarity, ghosting, HUD readability, input delay, frame pacing, GPU use and temperature.
- Disable frame generation if the base rate becomes unstable.
The plugin documentation describes lower flow-scale values as favoring performance and higher values as favoring quality. There is no universal optimum: resolution, refresh rate, game engine and GPU load all matter.

Troubleshooting
No generated frames
- Confirm the game uses
~/lsfg %command%. - Check that the lsfg-vk component was installed through the plugin.
- Restart the game after changing launch options.
- Check DLL detection and try compatible fullscreen or borderless mode.
- Remove conflicting launch options or other frame-generation injectors.
Crashes or severe stutter
- Return to Fixed 2x.
- Enable Performance Mode.
- Lower resolution or expensive settings.
- Use a lower but more consistent base-FPS cap.
- Disable HDR and test without upscaling or frame-generation mods.
Bad image quality
Watch for ghosting around characters, foliage and particles, broken transparency, moving HUD artifacts, uneven pacing and excessive input delay. These are limitations of image reconstruction, not necessarily installation failures.

Anti-cheat requires particular caution. The Steam listing says community experience suggests compatibility with some protected online games, but provides no guarantee. Check the current policy for each game and accept that risk yourself.
Experimental alternatives and forks
The separate experimental Decky LSFG-VK fork packages a private, verified lsfg-vk v2 developer build. It supports optional adaptive frame generation and can coexist with the original plugin, but only one launcher should be used for a game. Its documented experimental launch option is:
~/.local/bin/lsfg-vk-experimental %command%
It requires manual ZIP installation, documents HDR as still under development and should not be treated as the normal or stable path. Heroic and other Flatpak applications use a different wrapper procedure; the project specifically says not to use %command% in Heroic’s wrapper field.
Alternatives to LSFG-VK
Native game frame generation
When a game has a good native implementation, it is often the cleanest choice because the game can provide its own motion data and handle UI elements more intelligently. Native frame generation still has performance costs and artifacts, so it is not automatically perfect.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Decky Framegen and OptiScaler
Decky Framegen takes a different, more game-specific approach through OptiScaler. It can redirect or replace certain DLSS pathways with FSR3 or FSR3.1 paths. The project describes adding frame generation to games without an existing pathway as highly experimental.
Improve the real frame rate
Lowering resolution, enabling the game’s FSR or XeSS option, reducing shadows and volumetrics, and applying a stable 30, 40 or 45 FPS cap may produce a better experience than generated frames. A consistent real frame rate usually feels better than a higher displayed number with unstable pacing.
Verdict
Decky LSFG-VK is worth trying if you own Lossless Scaling, have a stable 30–45 FPS base and are comfortable with unofficial Decky software. It can make demanding single-player games look smoother, but it cannot create real rendering performance and may add latency, GPU load or visual artifacts.
The controversy should change your expectations, not necessarily rule out the plugin. Use the project’s own documentation, start with Fixed 2x, test one game at a time and disable it whenever a stable native frame rate feels better.
