Yes—most modern Nvidia and AMD graphics cards can be underclocked with free software. The simplest method is to reduce the Core Clock offset in MSI Afterburner, apply the change, test it, and save a stable profile. Radeon owners can usually use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition instead.
Underclocking is generally reversible, but it is not always the best solution. A frame-rate cap, power limit, or undervolt may reduce heat and power with less performance loss. Choose the control that matches the problem, then make one small change at a time.

Underclocking, undervolting, power limiting, and FPS limiting
A GPU dynamically changes its clock speed according to workload, temperature, voltage, power limits, and its boost algorithm. Underclocking means lowering the target or maximum operating frequency below the card’s normal behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Goal | Best first option | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce unnecessary gaming power | Frame-rate cap | Stops the GPU rendering frames your display or game does not need. |
| Reduce peak board power | Power limit | Restricts power and lets the GPU manage its clocks within that ceiling. |
| Reduce heat while preserving performance | Undervolting | Uses less voltage at a selected frequency, potentially improving performance per watt. |
| Guarantee a lower frequency target | Core-clock reduction | Directly lowers the GPU engine-clock target. |
| Reduce memory-related power | Memory-clock reduction | Lowers VRAM frequency, but can significantly hurt bandwidth-bound games. |
| Change noise behavior | Power limit, FPS cap, undervolt, or fan curve | A fan curve changes cooling behavior; it does not itself reduce GPU power. |
Underclocking and undervolting are not the same. A simple core-clock reduction lowers frequency. An undervolt lowers the voltage associated with a frequency and may retain more performance, but it normally requires more careful testing.

Why underclock a GPU?
- Lower load power and temperature.
- Reduce fan noise in a hot or poorly ventilated case.
- Improve thermals in a small-form-factor PC.
- Limit performance to match a monitor, game, or power supply.
- Possibly reduce coil whine by changing the card’s electrical load.
- Remove part of an aggressive factory overclock while troubleshooting stability.
- Reduce heat output on systems with limited cooling.
Lower heat and electrical stress may be beneficial over time, but underclocking does not guarantee a longer hardware lifespan. Coil whine may also remain unchanged because it is hardware- and load-dependent.
Should you underclock?
- Too hot or loud only while gaming: Try an FPS cap, lower power limit, improved airflow, or a custom fan curve first.
- Power consumption is the priority: Try a power limit or undervolt before a large clock reduction.
- Your GPU is overkill for the games you play: A modest core underclock is a sensible option.
- A laptop runs hot: Use the manufacturer’s performance and thermal modes first. Firmware may override third-party settings.
- The GPU is crashing: Do not assume underclocking is the cure. Check drivers, temperatures, RAM, PSU capacity, power delivery, and game-specific problems.
- Idle power is high: Check memory clocks, monitor refresh rates, video playback, and background GPU applications. Underclocking the 3D core may not solve elevated idle memory clocks.
Before you change anything
- Identify the exact GPU model and whether it is a desktop card, laptop GPU, integrated GPU, or OEM variant.
- Record stock behavior in a repeatable game or benchmark: core clock, memory clock, temperature, hotspot temperature if available, power, fan speed, FPS, and frame-time consistency.
- Close or disable other tuning utilities. Running Afterburner, AMD Adrenalin, the NVIDIA app, ASUS GPU Tweak, motherboard software, or another vendor utility together can create conflicts or make it unclear which program controls the card.
- Download software only from official vendor pages.
- Keep a rollback method ready: the utility’s Reset button, Windows Safe Mode, or uninstalling and disabling the tuning utility.
How to underclock an Nvidia or AMD GPU with MSI Afterburner
MSI Afterburner is the simplest cross-vendor option. MSI describes it as a monitoring and tuning utility with controls for GPU frequency, memory frequency, voltage, temperature, fan speed, and power-related settings.
Basic Core Clock method
- Download and install Afterburner from MSI’s official Afterburner page.
- Launch the application and verify that it has selected the intended GPU. This is important in systems with integrated graphics or multiple discrete cards.
- Leave voltage and memory settings at stock for the first test.
- Reduce Core Clock by a small amount, such as -25 MHz or -50 MHz. These are conservative starting points, not universal specifications.
- Click Apply.
- Run a demanding game or repeatable benchmark for 10–15 minutes.
- Check the clock, temperature, power, frame rate, frame times, visual quality, and stability.
- If stable, make another small reduction only if you need it. Stop when the power, noise, or temperature target is met.
- Save the working configuration to a profile slot.
- Enable startup loading only after the profile has passed extended testing.
A negative core-clock offset may simply remove a factory overclock and return the card closer to reference behavior. That is not necessarily a true underclock below the reference specification.

On many Nvidia cards, a voltage/frequency curve can produce a better efficiency result than a simple negative core-clock offset.
- Open Afterburner’s curve editor with Ctrl+F, where supported.
- Find a voltage point and its corresponding frequency.
- Choose a modest target frequency below the card’s typical stock boost.
- Adjust the curve so the selected voltage point reaches that frequency.
- Constrain higher-voltage points so the GPU does not boost beyond your intended target.
- Apply the profile and test several games, not only one benchmark.
Curve-editor behavior varies with GPU architecture, driver, Afterburner version, and permissions. There is no universal voltage/frequency value that is appropriate for every Nvidia card.
For technical, workstation, server, or headless environments, nvidia-smi documentation describes clock and power-management controls. Availability and permissions depend on the GPU, driver, operating system, and deployment mode, so it is not the best beginner method for a normal gaming PC.

How to underclock an AMD Radeon GPU with Adrenalin
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is usually the best first-party choice for Radeon owners. AMD documents controls for GPU frequency, voltage, power limits, fan behavior, presets, and monitoring, but the exact options vary by Radeon generation and driver version.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open Performance, then choose Tuning.
- Accept the tuning disclaimer if prompted.
- Choose a Custom profile or the least aggressive available preset.
- Enable GPU tuning.
- Reduce Maximum Frequency or the maximum GPU-clock value modestly.
- Leave memory tuning unchanged initially.
- Apply the settings.
- Run a demanding game or benchmark and monitor temperature, hotspot, clock, power, frame time, and stability.
- Save the profile if profile management is available for your GPU and driver.
Supported Radeon models may expose frequency and voltage controls in MHz and mV. Other models may offer percentage sliders, presets, or only a maximum-frequency control. AMD’s tuning documentation explains that available controls are GPU-dependent.
If you want lower power without manually choosing a clock, a supported Radeon card may offer a Quiet preset. AMD also provides automatic undervolting on supported hardware. Automatic undervolting is not a strict underclock: its goal is generally to reduce voltage while maintaining a similar clock target or improving performance per watt.
How much should you lower the clock?
Start with a small change and work downward in steps. A -25 MHz or -50 MHz core offset is a cautious first test in Afterburner; Radeon users should make a similarly modest reduction to the maximum-frequency control. GPU models, cooling, drivers, factory settings, and workloads differ too much for one “correct” MHz value.
Do not expect FPS to fall in direct proportion to clock speed. A shader-heavy benchmark may respond strongly, while a CPU-limited game may show almost no change. Ray tracing, memory bandwidth, geometry, storage, and an FPS cap can also determine performance. Measure the same workload before and after instead of relying on a universal percentage.

Power and temperature changes are not perfectly predictable either. The GPU may adjust voltage and boost behavior, and a lower frequency target does not guarantee a fixed wattage or temperature reduction.

How to test an underclock
Clicking Apply is only the beginning. Use the same game scene or benchmark at stock and tuned settings, then compare:
- GPU core and memory clocks.
- GPU and hotspot temperature.
- Board or GPU power draw, where available.
- Fan speed and noise.
- Average FPS and 1% low FPS.
- Frame-time consistency.
- Artifacts, flickering, freezes, black screens, driver resets, and application crashes.
NVIDIA FrameView’s documentation covers clock, temperature, power, and performance-per-watt measurements, including power-related fields for supported Nvidia and AMD monitoring paths.
Recommended validation sequence
- Run a demanding workload for at least 10–15 minutes as an initial check.
- Test the GPU’s heaviest normal workload, not only a light esports game.
- Test more than one game if the profile is intended for everyday use.
- Retest after a cold boot and after the tuning utility loads automatically.
- If you changed memory clocks or power behavior, test video playback and desktop use as well.
- Keep a stock profile so you can compare results and recover quickly.
A short benchmark pass proves only that the card survived that particular workload. It does not prove universal stability.
What to do if the GPU crashes or settings disappear
Black screen, driver timeout, or crash
- Wait briefly to see whether Windows recovers the display driver.
- If Windows remains responsive, open the tuning utility and click Reset.
- Reboot and check whether the problem is gone.
- If the crash happens before you can open the utility, boot Windows into Safe Mode and disable its startup entry or uninstall the utility.
- Restore stock settings and reapply only one small change at a time.
Settings reset after reboot
Check that the profile was saved and that startup loading is enabled. Driver updates, a crash, a vendor utility overwriting the profile, or restrictions on a laptop or OEM card can also reset tuning. Disable competing utilities, reload the saved profile, reboot, and retest. If startup automation causes instability, leave it disabled and apply the profile manually.
Lowering the clock causes instability
Keep memory and voltage at stock, reduce the size of the change, and test each variable independently. Instability can also come from a problematic voltage/frequency transition, an unstable factory profile, an incompatible driver or utility, or a problem unrelated to GPU clocks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important laptop, OEM, and multi-monitor limitations
Laptop GPUs frequently use manufacturer-specific power and thermal controls. Firmware, AC-versus-battery modes, the laptop’s cooling system, and the manufacturer’s utility may restrict or override third-party settings. Do not assume a laptop exposes the same controls as a desktop graphics card.

On systems with integrated and discrete graphics, verify the active adapter before applying a profile. Some integrated or OEM GPUs expose few or no tuning controls.
Multi-monitor setups can keep VRAM clocks elevated, particularly with high refresh rates, increasing idle power. If idle consumption is your concern, measure memory clocks and total system power before changing the 3D core or memory frequency.
Does underclocking affect the warranty?
Do not assume that underclocking automatically voids every warranty. Policies vary by manufacturer, product, adjustment, and region.
AMD’s tuning documentation includes broad warnings that operating outside published specifications may affect warranty coverage, even when AMD software provides the feature. Nvidia directs customers to the warranty terms for their specific product and region; see its graphics-card warranty page. MSI separately warns that damage resulting from tuning is not covered by its warranty, which should not be treated as a universal policy for every board partner.
Software underclocking is normally reversible and less aggressive than increasing voltage or frequency, but it still changes how the card operates. Use small steps, test thoroughly, and check the warranty terms for the exact GPU, board partner, and country. Do not claim that underclocking cannot damage hardware: unstable settings can cause crashes, data loss, corrupted work, or forced shutdowns, especially if combined with voltage, power, BIOS, fan, or memory changes.
Underclocking versus undervolting: the practical choice
Choose a frame-rate cap when the GPU is rendering more frames than you need. Choose a power limit when you want a more predictable ceiling on board power. Choose an undervolt when you want to preserve more performance while improving efficiency and are willing to test carefully. Choose a core underclock when you specifically want a lower maximum frequency or want to remove a factory overclock. Change memory clocks only when you have a clear reason, because memory reductions can hurt bandwidth-heavy games and affect idle behavior.

Frequently asked questions
Can I underclock without undervolting?
Yes. Reduce only the core-clock offset or maximum-frequency value and leave voltage and memory settings at stock for the initial test.
Does underclocking reduce FPS?
Usually it can, but the size of the change depends on the workload. Measure average FPS and frame times in the games you actually play.
Will underclocking always reduce power and temperature?
No. Dynamic boost and voltage behavior can reduce or offset the expected change. A frame-rate cap or power limit may be more effective for a specific target.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I change the memory clock too?
Usually not at first. Memory underclocking can reduce performance in bandwidth-limited games and may create unwanted idle-clock behavior, particularly with multiple high-refresh-rate monitors.
Can I use Afterburner with AMD Adrenalin?
You can install both, but avoid letting multiple programs control the same clocks, voltage, fan, or startup profile. Use one primary tuning utility while testing.
How do I restore stock settings?
Open the tuning utility, click Reset, apply the change, and remove or disable automatic startup loading. If the system crashes before Windows loads normally, use Safe Mode to disable the utility, then reboot.
