Verdict: The Framework Desktop is an unusually powerful 4.5-liter PC, combining AMD’s Ryzen AI Max processors, fast unified memory and surprisingly capable integrated graphics with replaceable storage, fans, front I/O and panels. It is an excellent fit for developers, Linux users, local-AI experimenters and buyers who value repairability. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting a conventional upgradeable gaming desktop.
The crucial compromise is easy to miss: the CPU, integrated GPU and LPDDR5x memory are soldered. You must choose the performance and memory capacity at purchase. Framework’s modularity is real, but it is concentrated around the edges rather than the core computing hardware.

Framework’s current specification page lists a starting price of $1,269, as seen on August 18, 2026. The page also shows a 192GB option as “coming soon,” but does not establish its final price or availability. Prices can change, so treat the live configurator as authoritative.
The headline price is not the complete cost
The listed price can describe a barebones system rather than a ready-to-use computer. Depending on the configuration, you may need to add an NVMe SSD, a compatible 120mm fan, a power cable, front Expansion Cards, tiles and an operating system.
That distinction matters. Tom’s Hardware’s reviewed system cost approximately $1,835 after adding a 1TB SSD, fan, power cable, Expansion Cards, tiles and other accessories. Tom’s Guide and PCWorld likewise highlighted the cost of completing the DIY configuration. Those review totals are configuration-specific, not current universal prices.
Recommended Free Tools
Framework’s launch announcement listed historical 2025 prices of $1,099 for the base system and $1,999 for a 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 configuration. Those figures should not be confused with the current listed starting price. A January 2026 report documented another price change, reinforcing the need to check the live configurator before buying.
Performance: exceptional integrated graphics, not a discrete-GPU replacement
CPU and productivity
The Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s 16 cores and 32 threads give the upper configuration unusually strong CPU capability for a system this small. Reviews found it competitive with recent gaming desktops in productivity testing. It is well suited to compiling code, rendering, media work, virtual machines, heavy multitasking and data processing.
The Ryzen AI Max 385 is still a substantial processor, but the 395 is the more convincing choice for sustained professional workloads and multi-VM development environments.

Gaming
The Radeon 8050S and 8060S make the Framework Desktop a capable 1080p gaming PC for many titles. Reviews found that it could handle a broad mix of newer and older games without a discrete graphics card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
However, performance depends heavily on resolution, quality preset, upscaling, ray tracing, driver version and memory allocation. Integrated graphics also shares system memory instead of using dedicated VRAM. A similarly priced conventional tower may deliver substantially higher frame rates, particularly in ray-traced games or at 1440p and 4K.
The right comparison is therefore with other high-end integrated-graphics mini PCs, not with a full-size desktop containing a modern discrete GPU. The Framework’s advantages are its size, unified memory capacity and repairability—not maximum frames per dollar.
Unified memory and graphics allocation
The system’s LPDDR5x memory is shared between the CPU and GPU. AMD software can allocate a portion of that pool for graphics use. PCWorld reported that a 128GB system could be configured with 32GB for the operating system and up to 96GB available to graphics under the relevant software configuration, while Tom’s Guide demonstrated a 32GB/32GB split on a 64GB review unit.
These are shared-memory allocations, not equivalent to a discrete GPU with physically separate VRAM. The available controls can depend on BIOS, operating system and driver versions, so buyers should not assume that every configuration exposes identical settings.

Local AI is the most distinctive reason to buy it
The 128GB configuration is compelling for local AI because large models and datasets can exceed the memory capacity of ordinary mini PCs. A unified memory pool also allows CPU and GPU workloads to share capacity without installing a physically large graphics card.
Rank #3
That does not mean every large model will run quickly. Inference speed depends on quantization, model architecture, context size, GPU offload, runtime, drivers and software optimization. A model may load successfully yet produce an impractical number of tokens per second. Some AI applications also have stronger support for discrete NVIDIA GPUs.
Framework has promoted linking multiple systems over USB4 and 5Gbit Ethernet for larger workloads, but that is a manufacturer-described use case rather than a guarantee of performance. The 128GB model makes sense for local-AI experimentation, large datasets and memory-heavy creative work. It is excessive for office applications, casual gaming and ordinary web use.
What is actually upgradeable?
Framework’s reputation can create the wrong expectation. The Desktop is modular, but it is not a conventional socketed desktop with replaceable RAM and graphics.

|---|---|---|
| CPU | No | Choose the processor at purchase |
| Integrated GPU | No | It is part of the processor package |

| NVMe storage | Yes | Two M.2 slots allow replacement or expansion |
| CPU fan | Yes | Uses a standard 120mm fan format |
| Front I/O | Yes | Two user-selectable Expansion Card slots |
| Panels and tiles | Yes | Replaceable for repair or personalization |
| Mainboard | Potentially | Designed for replacement, but future releases are not guaranteed |
The two M.2 slots are among the most useful long-term features. You can begin with one SSD and add another later. The standard board format also gives the platform more reuse potential than a proprietary mini-PC board.
The main limitation is soldered memory. If the memory fails, the remedy is likely board-level repair or mainboard replacement rather than swapping a DIMM. Buying 32GB with the expectation of upgrading later is therefore not a sound plan.
Cooling, noise and assembly
Framework supports standard 120mm CPU fans and lists Noctua and Cooler Master options. The official page gives the Noctua option a 28.8dBA rating and Cooler Master options up to 34dBA. Actual noise depends on the selected fan, ambient temperature, power mode and sustained workload.

Reviews generally found the system impressively quiet for its performance. That should not be interpreted as silent under every load. A sustained render, compile or AI workload can produce different results from light desktop use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFramework describes DIY assembly as taking approximately 10 minutes with moderate difficulty. In practice, the owner still needs to install or select the fan, fit the SSD, install front modules, attach the power cable, install an operating system and configure firmware and drivers. The DIY label does not mean every component required for a finished PC is included.
Windows and Linux
The Desktop ships without an operating system in the listed configuration. Framework supports Windows 11 and lists Linux options including Ubuntu, Fedora, Bazzite and Playtron in its launch material.
Linux is a genuine advantage for buyers who already prefer AMD graphics and want to avoid a Windows license. Bazzite may be attractive for a console-like gaming setup, while Ubuntu or Fedora may be better suited to development. Support is not identical across distributions, however. Sleep behavior, display output, GPU memory allocation, firmware updates and application-specific acceleration can vary with the kernel, Mesa stack and driver versions.
For Windows users, include the license in the total purchase cost. For Linux users, confirm that the chosen distribution supports the applications, games and AI runtimes you actually use.
Who should buy the Framework Desktop?
- Developers: The 395 model’s CPU performance, high memory ceiling and Linux flexibility are valuable for compiling, containers and virtual machines.
- Local-AI users: Choose 128GB only when your models or datasets genuinely need it and you understand the software limitations.
- Linux enthusiasts: The system offers a modular, AMD-based platform without requiring Windows.
- Compact gaming buyers: It is a strong 1080p integrated-graphics machine, provided you do not demand discrete-GPU performance.
- Repairability-focused buyers: Storage, fans, front modules, panels and potentially the mainboard are more serviceable than on many mini PCs.
Who should choose something else?
- Competitive or high-end gamers: A discrete-GPU desktop will usually deliver better rasterization, ray tracing and upgrade potential.
- Traditional PC builders: A DIY Mini-ITX system can offer socketed CPUs, DIMMs and a full PCIe x16 graphics slot.
- Value-focused buyers: Other Ryzen AI Max mini PCs may offer similar silicon for less, though often with less repairability and support transparency.
- Future-upgrade planners: The Framework Desktop cannot accept a replacement CPU, GPU or memory kit independently.
- Basic users: Web browsing, office work and light coding do not justify paying for 64GB or 128GB unified memory.
Which configuration should you buy?
Ryzen AI Max 385 with 32GB
This is the sensible entry point for general productivity, development, moderate content creation and 1080p gaming. Its weakness is longevity: 32GB is fixed, so heavy multitasking and future memory demands may become restrictive.

Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 64GB
This is the best-balanced option for demanding development, virtual machines, productivity and gaming. It provides the faster CPU and GPU without paying the full premium for 128GB.
Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB
Choose this for local AI, large datasets, multiple virtual machines or memory-intensive creative work. Do not buy it merely because a large specification sounds future-proof; unused memory does not improve ordinary office work or automatically increase gaming performance.
Alternatives
A conventional tower is usually better for discrete-GPU performance, replaceable graphics, socketed CPUs, DIMM upgrades, PCIe expansion and performance per dollar.

Other Ryzen AI Max mini PCs may offer similar CPU and integrated-GPU performance at a lower price. Compare systems with equivalent memory capacity—particularly 64GB or 128GB—or the comparison will hide the reason to buy the Framework.
A discrete-GPU workstation remains the better choice for CUDA-dependent applications, ray tracing, 4K gaming, high-refresh gaming and professional software that benefits from dedicated graphics memory.
Final verdict
The Framework Desktop is a specialist product with unusually broad appeal among enthusiasts. It delivers remarkable CPU and integrated-GPU capability in a 4.5-liter enclosure, while offering more repairability and customization than most mini PCs.
But the marketing must be read carefully. The core components are fixed: CPU, integrated GPU and memory. The PCIe x4 slot and 400W power supply also do not make this a straightforward future discrete-GPU gaming tower. Its upgrade path is primarily storage, cooling, front I/O, cosmetics and potentially a complete mainboard replacement.
Buy the Framework Desktop when compact size, unified memory, local AI, Linux and repairability matter enough to justify the premium. Choose the 64GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 for the broadest balance, or 128GB when your workload genuinely needs it. For maximum gaming performance, cheap upgrades or conventional desktop value, a standard tower or DIY Mini-ITX build remains the better choice.
