MechBoard64 is a real internal mechanical-keyboard replacement for the Commodore 64—not a complete computer and not a USB keyboard. It is designed to fit breadbin C64 and C64C cases, connect to the computer through its internal keyboard interface, and reuse original C64 keycaps with modern mechanical switches.
The project was described as “brand new” when it was first covered, but that wording is now historical. In 2026, the more important questions are whether you can obtain one, whether your C64 is compatible, and whether you have the original keycaps and assembly skills it requires.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt preserves the appearance and layout of the original C64 while replacing its old keyboard mechanism and electronics. It is intended for restoration projects, including systems built with reproduction cases or modern C64-compatible motherboards.
#1 Best Overall
- Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
- Programmable keys, Dual Super Buttons, and Super Stick, with independent control panel.
- 87 keys. Top mount style with Kailh Box White Switches.
- Double-Shot ABS keycaps with SA profile. (C64 Edition only)
- Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
It is not a standalone computer keyboard. It does not include a C64 motherboard, case, power supply, SID or VIC-II chip, video cable, or software. You still need a compatible computer board and case. Original C64 keycaps are also generally required.
The design and assembly material are available through maker-oriented project resources, including the PCBWay MechBoard64 project page, which points to Breadbox64 documentation.
Why replace the original C64 keyboard?
Original C64 keyboards are now decades old. Their switches may be worn, intermittent, inconsistent, or missing entirely, and replacement assemblies often depend on donor machines.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The stock keyboard also has a softer feel than a modern mechanical keyboard. MechBoard64 changes that experience to one based on Cherry-MX-style switches, with supplied versions commonly using Gateron switches. The result should be a more distinct and consistent key press, although the exact feel depends on the switch revision, keycaps, stabilizers, and assembly quality.
This is therefore both a repair option and a usability upgrade. It can make a restored C64 more pleasant for programming, typing, and longer sessions, but it does not change the computer’s layout or turn it into a modern USB workstation.
How the replacement works
- Custom PCB: Provides the keyboard matrix and interface electronics.
- Mechanical switches: Replace the original keyboard’s aging switch mechanism.
- Aluminum bracket: Holds the keyboard assembly in the original case position.
- Keycap adapters: Allow original Commodore keycaps to fit modern mechanical-switch stems.
- Stabilizers: Support long keys, especially the space bar.
- 20-pin ribbon cable: Connects the replacement to the C64 keyboard interface.
- Shift Lock circuit: Reproduces the C64’s locking-key function electronically and uses an LED to show its state.
Pressing Shift Lock toggles the function rather than relying on the exact latching microswitch mechanism used by the original keyboard. LED placement and backlighting behavior can vary between standard and LED revisions.

MechBoard64 is designed around original C64 keycaps. The adapters make the conversion possible, but the keycaps themselves are usually not included.
Before buying, check that your keycaps are complete, undamaged, and suitable for reuse. Warped caps, worn stems, incorrect stabilizer alignment, or incompatible adapter tolerances can cause keys to bind or sit unevenly. Generic modern keycaps will not automatically reproduce the C64’s complete layout, colors, or PETSCII legends.
Retro Fuzion says its current adapters use injection-molded, precision-fit parts. That may differ from earlier 3D-printed adapter versions, so confirm which adapter type is included with a particular kit or assembled keyboard.
Compatibility: case fit is not the same as board compatibility
Reported physical compatibility includes both the original breadbin C64 case and the slimmer C64C case. Retro Fuzion also lists compatibility with original C64 motherboards, C64 Reloaded MK1 and MK2 boards, and Ultimate64 boards.

“Drop-in replacement” means that the assembly is intended to occupy the original keyboard position and use the internal interface. It does not mean zero work, universal compatibility, or a tool-free installation.
Kit, assembled, or backlit?
| Version | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| DIY kit | Experienced builders who want to assemble the keyboard | Substantial soldering and mechanical alignment |
| SMD-preassembled kit | Builders who want less PCB assembly | Switches and other assembly work may still be required |
| Fully assembled | Owners who want the least construction work | Higher cost and inconsistent availability |
| LED or backlit version | Night use and visual customization | Extra power draw and additional compatibility concerns |
An assembled product is not necessarily a complete C64 keyboard set. For example, Retro Fuzion’s fully assembled listing includes the keyboard assembly, adapters, ribbon cable, and stabilizer kit, but says original C64 keycaps are required and excluded.
What building a kit involves
The exact order depends on the PCB and kit revision, so use the applicable project manual rather than treating this overview as a substitute for it. In general, the process involves:
- Gathering the PCB, bracket, switches, adapters, stabilizers, ribbon cable, and original keycaps.
- Soldering the switches and any remaining through-hole components.
- Installing the PCB in the aluminum bracket.
- Fitting stabilizers and checking long-key alignment.
- Installing the keycap adapters and original C64 keycaps.
- Connecting the ribbon cable to the C64 keyboard header.
- Mounting the assembly in the case.
- Testing every key before closing the case.
The DIY version is best considered an intermediate electronics-assembly project, not a casual plug-and-play upgrade. You will need a fine-tip soldering iron, solder and flux, side cutters, screwdrivers, a multimeter or continuity tester, and patience. Work in a well-ventilated area and inspect joints for bridges before connecting the assembly to the computer.
Installation and testing checklist
Before installation
- Photograph the original keyboard connector and key positions.
- Identify the case type and motherboard revision.
- Confirm that all required keycaps are present.
- Inspect the C64 power supply, especially for a backlit build.
- Read the instructions for the exact MechBoard64 revision.
During assembly
- Keep switch orientation consistent.
- Check stabilizers before permanently soldering all switches.
- Do not force adapters onto damaged keycaps.
- Confirm ribbon-cable orientation and connector seating.
- Inspect every solder joint for bridges or incomplete connections.
First test
With the case still open, test every alphanumeric key, cursor and special-function key, the Commodore key, the space bar, Shift, Shift Lock, repeated presses, and the Shift Lock indicator. On LED versions, check full backlighting and watch for power instability. Test in BASIC and in a game or cartridge environment before final assembly.
If keys fail
- Power off before reseating the ribbon cable.
- Check cable orientation and connector seating.
- Inspect the failed switch’s solder joints.
- Use a continuity tester to trace the switch connection.
- Look for solder bridges or damaged PCB traces.
- If one key fails, suspect its switch, joint, adapter, or stabilizer.
- If a group of keys fails, suspect the cable, connector, orientation, or PCB.
Backlighting and power-supply risk
Backlit versions use white LEDs and add electrical load. Retro Fuzion warns that the C64 power supply must handle the additional draw. An old or weak power supply is already a restoration concern; backlighting makes checking its condition more important.

- Mini portable 60% compact layout: MK-BOX is a 68 keys mechanical keyboard have cute small size, but with separate arrow keys and F1-F12, Fn function keys you need, can use it for gaming or work while saving space.
- Mechanical red switch: characterized for being linear and smoother, slight key sound has no paragraph sense with minimal resistance, but fast action without a tactile bump feel which makes it easier to tap the keyboard.
- Classic charming blue LED backlit: Customize multiple illuminated LED light effects, supports about 16 backlight modes, press Fn + Ins can control it, FN + ←/→ control backlight speed, FN + ↑/↓ control backlight brightness.
- Full anti-ghosting keyboard: all 68 keys are no conflict, black grey red mash up design, ergonomic suspension double-color injection keycap, double kickstand feet adjustable typing angle and detachable usb cable, both practical and beautiful.
- Extensive compatibility: MageGee MK-Box mechanical keyboards use USB 2.0 connector making it compatible with Windows (2000, XP, ME, Vista, 7, 8), Linux and Mac, plug and play, no drivers or software required.
Do not assume that a keyboard upgrade fixes power-related problems. Confirm the power supply’s condition and the requirements of the specific LED revision before operating the system for extended periods.

Can you still buy a MechBoard64 in 2026?
Availability appears fragmented rather than continuously stocked through one clearly established retail channel.
Retro Fuzion’s fully assembled, fully backlit listing has shown a price of $149.95 but is marked sold out. American Retro has listed kit and assembled variants, including LED versions. Its published 2024 event prices were $159.99 for the kit, $184.99 for the assembled version, $174.99 for the LED kit, and $219.99 for the LED assembled version. Those are historical prices, not verified current 2026 offers.
Other listings may represent only one component. MechanicalKeyboards.biz, for example, lists an aluminum bracket rather than a complete keyboard; a buyer would still need the PCB, switches, adapters, stabilizers, cable, and keycaps. Check whether a listing is for a bare PCB, bracket, kit, assembled unit, or LED variant before comparing prices. Relevant pages include American Retro’s MechBoard64 page, Retro Fuzion’s assembled listing, and the bracket listing.
Who should choose it?
MechBoard64 is a strong fit if you have a worn or missing keyboard, want a genuine internal replacement, prefer mechanical switches, own original keycaps, and can solder or obtain an assembled unit.

Alternatives
Repair the original keyboard
Repair or retain the original assembly if authenticity matters, the keyboard is mostly functional, or you want the least disruptive restoration. This preserves the original feel but depends on the condition of old parts.
Use a donor C64 keyboard
A tested donor assembly can be easier to install and more authentic than a modern conversion, but it is still decades old and may have its own reliability problems.
Use the 8BitDo C64 Edition
The 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard — C64 Edition is a C64-styled external keyboard for modern devices. Its listed features include Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz wireless, wired USB, hot-swappable Kailh Box White V2 switches, 87 keys, and programmable controls, with Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Android 9 or later support.
It is the better choice for a PC, tablet, or emulator. It is not a replacement for the keyboard inside an original C64.
Verdict
MechBoard64 remains an appealing restoration project for owners who want modern mechanical key feel without abandoning the C64’s original keycaps and appearance. The important caveats are equally clear: it is only a keyboard, kits require meaningful soldering, original keycaps are usually not included, backlit versions increase power demands, and availability cannot be inferred from old product pages or prices.
