Sony and AMD have revealed three graphics technologies under their Project Amethyst collaboration: Neural Arrays for machine-learning workloads, Radiance Cores for ray tracing and path tracing, and Universal Compression for reducing graphics-data movement. The announcement points toward the kind of technology that could power a future PlayStation, but it is not a PlayStation 6 specification reveal. Sony and AMD have not announced a console name, release date, price, GPU, memory configuration, or performance target.
A preview of a graphics direction—not a PS6 reveal
The presentation by PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh focused on future graphics and gameplay technology rather than a finished consumer product. Sony and AMD describe Project Amethyst as a deeper collaboration around machine-learning-based graphics and gameplay systems.

The most important distinction is between technology being developed and hardware confirmed for a shipping console. Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression were publicly described as part of the companies’ research and development direction. Their exact implementation in a future PlayStation remains unconfirmed.
Sony first formally discussed the deeper Sony–AMD relationship in its December 2024 PS5 Pro technical seminar, which described collaboration focused on machine learning for graphics and gameplay. The later Project Amethyst presentation provided a clearer view of the proposed hardware and software direction.

Neural Arrays: making GPU compute units cooperate on AI
Modern GPUs are built around highly parallel compute units, but machine-learning workloads are not simply a matter of adding more independent workers. Neural networks repeatedly move and combine data, and the efficiency of the workload depends heavily on how those operations are coordinated.
Sony and AMD’s Neural Array concept appears designed to let groups of GPU compute units cooperate as a more unified neural-processing resource. Rather than treating the GPU’s compute units as mostly separate workers, the design would create a workload-specific fabric for neural operations.
That makes Neural Arrays more precise than calling them “an AI chip.” The public description suggests a change in how related GPU resources work together, not confirmation of a separate standalone neural processor.

A more efficient neural system could reconstruct a higher-quality image from a lower internal rendering resolution, remove noise from ray-traced lighting, or support other machine-learning features in a game engine. The same general capability could eventually be used for gameplay systems, although Sony and AMD have not announced specific AI-driven game features.
No public material supplies a TOPS figure, transistor count, latency improvement, or benchmark for Neural Arrays. Those numbers should not be inferred from the presentation.
Radiance Cores: separating lighting work from general shading
Ray tracing calculates how rays interact with geometry, materials, and light. Path tracing takes that idea further by simulating a more unified flow of light through a scene. Both techniques can produce more realistic reflections, shadows, indirect lighting, and global illumination, but they also create a demanding workload.

In a conventional graphics pipeline, ray-tracing work depends on specialized acceleration as well as general shader and compute resources. Sony and AMD describe Radiance Cores as dedicated hardware blocks intended to handle unified light-transport operations more efficiently.

The proposed advantage is architectural separation: Radiance Cores would handle more of the ray-tracing or path-tracing workload while shader resources remain available for conventional scene shading. In principle, that could make advanced lighting more practical without requiring every part of the GPU to compete for the same capacity.
However, a dedicated ray-tracing block does not guarantee that every future game will run full path tracing at high resolution and high frame rates. Results would depend on:
- the number and capability of Radiance Cores;
- clock speeds and the rest of the GPU design;
- memory bandwidth and capacity;
- the scene’s geometry and lighting complexity;
- denoising and reconstruction quality;
- engine support and developer priorities; and
- the final console’s power, cooling, and manufacturing limits.
Radiance Cores should also not be treated as a confirmed equivalent to Nvidia RT Cores or AMD’s current ray accelerators. Sony and AMD have not published an architectural comparison.
Universal Compression: reducing pressure on the memory system
Graphics performance is not determined by compute power alone. A GPU can have enough arithmetic capacity and still spend time waiting for textures, geometry, ray-tracing data, neural data, or other resources to move through the system.

Universal Compression is intended to reduce the amount of data that must travel through the graphics pipeline. If it works as described, the result could be lower effective memory-bandwidth demand, less power consumed by data movement, and more room for detailed assets without a proportional increase in raw bandwidth.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
This could be particularly valuable alongside the other two technologies. More ray tracing creates more lighting-related data, while neural reconstruction and denoising also depend on moving substantial amounts of image and model data. Compression could help the Neural Array and Radiance Core portions of the pipeline exchange information more efficiently.
The name does not reveal how the system works. Sony and AMD have not disclosed:
- the compression ratio;
- whether compression is lossless, lossy, adaptive, or a combination;
- which data types are supported;
- whether textures, geometry, ray-tracing data, neural data, or all of them are compressed;
- whether new memory hardware is required; or
- whether developers must manually prepare assets for the system.
Compression could improve effective bandwidth, but it would not automatically solve every memory problem. A future console could still be limited by total memory capacity, latency, cache behavior, or the cost of decompressing and managing data.

Together, the three technologies target three major bottlenecks in modern rendering:
- Machine learning: Neural Arrays could make reconstruction and denoising more efficient.
- Lighting: Radiance Cores could make heavier ray tracing and path tracing more practical.
- Bandwidth: Universal Compression could reduce the cost of moving the data those systems require.
The strategic direction is clear. Sony and AMD appear to be prioritizing image reconstruction, advanced lighting, and efficiency per byte and per watt—not simply adding more conventional rasterization performance.
That could allow a future console to deliver more stable reconstructed image quality, better reflections and global illumination, more detailed assets, and more sophisticated lighting within a fixed power and memory budget. But these are intended architectural benefits, not announced specifications or performance guarantees.

PS5 Pro is the clearest result available today
The most concrete public outcome of the Sony–AMD work is software on existing hardware. PS5 Pro introduced PSSR, Sony’s machine-learning-based image-reconstruction system. Sony later said that an upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network were developed through the Project Amethyst partnership with AMD.

A March 16, 2026 system update expanded availability for supported PS5 Pro games.
This distinction matters:
- Current: upgraded PSSR on supported PS5 Pro games.
- Current on PC: AMD’s FSR 4 uses related collaboration-derived advances.
- Future research: Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression.
- Unconfirmed: the exact use of those technologies in the next PlayStation.
PSSR and FSR 4 should not be described as identical systems. Console and PC implementations can use different models, formats, precision, integration methods, and tuning. The confirmed connection is that Sony says upgraded PSSR and AMD’s broader graphics work draw from the collaboration—not that both products behave exactly the same way.
Is this definitely PlayStation 6 technology?
Not in the strict evidentiary sense. It is reasonable to describe Project Amethyst as technology being developed with a future PlayStation in mind, or as a likely preview of capabilities that could appear in a successor to PS5. It is not accurate to say Sony has confirmed the PS6’s GPU.
Sony and AMD have not announced:
- the name of the next console;
- its release date or price;
- its GPU architecture or model;
- core counts or clock speeds;
- memory capacity or bandwidth;
- target resolutions or frame rates;
- launch games;
- backward-compatibility details; or
- whether every Project Amethyst technology will reach final consumer hardware.
AMD’s 2025 annual report confirms AMD’s existing semi-custom SoC business for PlayStation 5 hardware. It does not confirm a successor console or the architecture described by Project Amethyst.
What would determine whether the technology succeeds?
Silicon and system balance
Simulation results do not guarantee consumer-hardware performance. Dedicated blocks consume die area that could otherwise be used for shaders, cache, CPU resources, media engines, or memory interfaces. The final product would need to balance specialization against general-purpose performance.

Developer adoption
New hardware helps only when game engines expose it effectively. A new path-tracing pipeline, neural model, or compression system may require engine changes and asset tuning. Older games may not automatically benefit, especially from new lighting paths.
Model quality
More neural throughput does not guarantee better images. Upscaling depends on training data, temporal stability, motion handling, disocclusion behavior, and game-specific tuning. Reconstruction can still produce shimmering, ghosting, unstable fine detail, or other artifacts when the base image is difficult to interpret.
How developers spend the performance
If a future console makes ray tracing cheaper, developers may use that capacity for denser lighting, more geometry, higher internal resolution, more complex simulation, or higher frame rates. Better hardware does not dictate a single visual outcome.
Cost and thermals
Specialized hardware can improve efficiency, but it also increases design complexity. Console price, power draw, cooling, manufacturing yield, and memory cost will determine how much of this research reaches a shipping system.
What this means if you are buying hardware now
A PS5 Pro is the relevant current PlayStation purchase for readers who want improved PS5 image quality now. Its upgraded PSSR support provides a real, software-based connection to Project Amethyst’s machine-learning work. It does not mean the PS5 Pro contains confirmed Neural Arrays or Radiance Cores.
An AMD Radeon graphics card is the more flexible PC route for readers interested in current FSR technology, adjustable settings, and upgradeability. FSR support varies by game, however, and a Radeon GPU does not reproduce the exact behavior of PSSR or provide future PlayStation hardware features.
Waiting makes the most sense for readers whose main reason to upgrade is the prospect of dedicated next-generation path-tracing hardware and new bandwidth technology. The trade-off is that Sony has not provided a release window or product specifications for the next PlayStation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe bottom line
Project Amethyst matters because it reveals where Sony and AMD believe console graphics are heading: machine-learning reconstruction as a core rendering tool, more specialized hardware for ray tracing and path tracing, and aggressive efforts to reduce memory traffic.
Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression are significant technology previews, but they are not a confirmed PS6 specification sheet. The upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro is the clearest public result today. Everything beyond that should be understood as a promising architectural direction until Sony and AMD disclose final hardware.
