Yes, you can run a Squad server without paying a monthly hosting bill—but “free” usually means self-hosting the machine yourself. You supply the hardware, electricity, internet connection, port forwarding, updates, administration and troubleshooting. A provider trial can remove the initial charge for a short period, but it is still a hosted service with limits and an expiry or renewal condition.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Squad servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
For a private test, clan session or occasional event, an unlicensed self-hosted server can be sufficient. A public community that wants to appear in Squad’s main browser must meet Offworld Industries’ licensing rules, including memory, public-access and staffing requirements.

What “free Squad hosting” actually means
There are two different offers hidden behind the phrase “free Squad server hosting.” The first is self-hosting: you install the dedicated server on a computer you control and expose it to the internet. There is no hosting invoice, but the server is not cost-free. Your electricity, hardware wear, bandwidth, maintenance time and moderation workload become the operating cost.
The second is a provider promotion. A host supplies the machine and network, while you receive a limited trial or credit. FadeHost, for example, advertises a provider-reported seven-day Squad trial with no card. Confirm the current eligibility, resource limits, cancellation process and renewal terms on the live offer before relying on it; trial wording can change.

| Approach | What you provide | Browser position | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted, unlicensed | Computer, power, connection, port forwarding and administration | Custom Servers browser | Private tests, small groups and temporary events |
| Self-hosted, licensed | Compliant public hardware, network, memory and administrator team | Primary Server Browser tab | Public communities that meet Offworld policy |
| Provider trial | Account setup and compliance with the provider’s trial terms | Depends on the server’s licensing status | Short evaluations before committing to a paid plan |
A trial is not the same as free-forever hosting. When the trial ends, the provider may stop the instance, require payment or delete the files. Export your configuration and map rotation before the deadline if you may move the server.
Can you host a Squad server on your own computer?
Yes. Squad’s installation reference documents a dedicated-server installation through SteamCMD, using AppID 403240. Configuration is stored beneath SquadGame/ServerConfig/. You must be able to accept incoming traffic on your router and firewall, and your internet connection needs enough upload capacity for the players you intend to support.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
For a private, unlicensed instance, the practical requirement is a stable machine with enough CPU, RAM, storage and network headroom for the player count and any mods. The official material does not define one universal “free server” specification, so performance depends on your configuration, map, tick-rate demands and what else the computer is doing.
Licensed public servers have explicit policy requirements. Offworld Industries’ 2026 policy page specifies 8 GB of RAM minimum, plus 4 GB for each additional game instance. The same policy requires public access and does not allow VPS or virtual-machine hardware for licensed servers. If you plan multiple instances, count the additional memory before you advertise slots; the 4 GB figure is per extra instance, not a one-time allowance.
Linux installations in the cited guide require GLIBC 2.17 or higher. Check the distribution’s runtime before downloading the server. A machine that launches SteamCMD but lacks a compatible GLIBC version can fail when the game executable starts.
Network and router requirements
Your server must have a reachable address and forwarded ports. The installation reference calls out router port forwarding. A secondary 2026 setup guide commonly lists ports 7787 and 27165; treat those numbers as setup guidance, not a permanent guarantee, and confirm the current port assignments in the documentation for your server build.
- Give the host computer a stable local IP address, either with a DHCP reservation or a static configuration.
- Allow the dedicated-server executable through the operating system firewall.
- Forward the documented game and query ports from the router to that local IP.
- Check whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. If it does, ordinary port forwarding may not make the server reachable from outside your home.
- Test from a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, rather than only from inside your own network.
Do not publish your home IP address unnecessarily. Restrict administrative access, use strong credentials where applicable and keep the operating system patched.

How to make a free Squad server: the documented setup path
The exact menu names can change with game updates, but the installation sequence remains straightforward.
- Prepare the host. Choose a dedicated Windows or Linux machine that can remain online. Close unrelated applications, install operating-system updates and verify the Linux GLIBC requirement if you are using Linux.
- Install SteamCMD. Download SteamCMD from Valve’s official distribution, create a separate installation directory and run it with an anonymous login where the dedicated-server package permits anonymous access.
- Install the Squad dedicated server. Use SteamCMD to install or update AppID
403240. A typical SteamCMD invocation is+login anonymous +force_install_dir <server-folder> +app_update 403240 validate +quit; replace the folder value with your actual path and keep the command in your update script. - Configure the server files. Edit the files under
SquadGame/ServerConfig/, includingServer.cfg,Admins.cfgand the layer-rotation files. Set the server name, password policy, map layers, moderation permissions and any supported gameplay options. - Set firewall and forwarding rules. Permit the server process through the host firewall, then forward the ports required by your current build from the router to the host’s local IP. Recheck the rules after changing the host machine or router.
- Start and monitor the process. Launch the dedicated-server executable, watch its log output for bind or authentication errors and verify that it remains running after a map change. Configure automatic restart only after you can identify a clean shutdown versus a crash.
- Test as a player. Search the Custom Servers browser from another internet connection. If the server is not visible, test direct connectivity, firewall rules, port forwarding and whether your ISP blocks inbound connections.
Keep a backup of the entire ServerConfig directory before changing rotations or administrator entries. Updates can replace binaries and alter supported settings; a backup lets you restore a known-good configuration without rebuilding it from memory.
Why your free server may not appear in the main browser
Browser placement is controlled by licensing, not by whether you paid a hosting company. Offworld Industries states that licensed servers appear in the primary Server Browser tab. The installation reference states that servers without a license appear in the Custom Browser.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Unlicensed server: Custom Servers only
An unlicensed instance can still be useful. Friends can find it through Custom Servers, connect by an address when supported, and use it for configuration or mod testing. The trade-off is discoverability: players browsing only the primary tab may never see it.
Licensed public server: policy obligations
To seek primary-browser placement, read the current Offworld license policy before spending money or advertising a community. The 2026 policy page requires:
- At least 8 GB of RAM for the server, with 4 GB added for every additional game instance.
- A genuinely public server rather than a permanently private passworded instance.
- An administrator ratio of 10 admins per Squad server.
- Physical, non-virtualized server hardware; VPS and VM hardware are not allowed for licensed servers under the cited policy.
The staffing rule matters as much as the hardware. A public server that runs all day needs people who can respond to cheating reports, harassment, griefing, crashes and rule disputes across different time zones. Buying more slots without an administration plan does not satisfy the operational requirement.
What free hosting costs in practice
Self-hosting replaces a recurring invoice with several smaller costs:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRank #3
- Improved NPC conversation system where Commander Shepard can take matters into your own hands – interrupting or using force to get the answer required.
- The second act of BioWare's epic sci-fi RPG trilogy continues the story of Commander Shepard and humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.
- Integration with the original Mass Effect game allows players to import saved files and contiue play with those files in Mass Effect 2.
- Choose from 19 different weapons, including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
- New location based damage system allows for targeting of key weak points, blasting off limbs, igniting enemies, or cripple and disable enemy troops.
- Electricity: a computer left online continuously draws power even when empty.
- Hardware wear: fans, storage and power supplies operate for longer periods.
- Bandwidth: uploads and downloads rise with player activity, updates and mod distribution.
- Time: you handle updates, restarts, backups, logs, configuration and incident response.
- Moderation: public communities need rules, admin coverage and a process for disputes.
- Downtime risk: a home reboot, ISP outage or router failure takes the server offline.
There is no single official monthly price for Squad hosting. Provider cost depends on location, slot count, CPU and RAM allocation, storage, DDoS protection, backups and billing term. Offworld’s trusted-provider list is a starting point rather than a guarantee of current price or availability. It includes providers such as PSG Hosting, Host Havoc, LOW.MS, G-Portal, GamerzHost, Blue Fang Solutions, BB Host, AWN and Aussie Server Hosts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between self-hosting, a trial and paid hosting
| Decision factor | Self-hosted | Provider trial | Paid provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up-front cash | No hosting invoice, but you pay operating costs | Usually waived during the stated trial period | Recurring charge under the selected plan |
| Hardware ownership | You own or control the machine | Provider supplies it | Provider supplies it |
| Maintenance | You perform updates, backups and repairs | Provider handles infrastructure; you still manage Squad settings | Provider handles infrastructure; you still manage Squad settings |
| Browser placement | Depends on licensing | Depends on licensing | Depends on licensing and policy compliance |
| Network resilience | Limited by your home connection and router | Usually better than home hosting, subject to the trial plan | Typically includes data-center connectivity; verify DDoS and backup terms |
| Control | Highest control over the operating system and files | Bound by provider controls and trial limits | Bound by the provider’s plan and acceptable-use rules |
Choose self-hosting when the server is for a known group, you already own suitable hardware and occasional downtime is acceptable. Choose a trial when you want to measure setup effort, latency and administration before paying. Choose a paid plan when the community expects 24/7 availability and you do not want your home connection or personal computer to be the failure point.
Common problems and practical fixes
The server is running but nobody can see it
First determine whether you expect Custom Servers or the primary browser. An unlicensed server will not gain primary-tab placement merely by changing its name. For Custom Servers, verify the process is listening, the firewall rule targets the correct executable, the router forwards to the current local IP and your ISP allows inbound traffic.
Players connect, then time out
Check that every required port is forwarded to the same host and that the router did not assign a new local address. Test with one player before adding mods or a large rotation. Review server logs for bind errors, authentication failures or crashes during map loading.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The server disappears after a restart
Confirm that SteamCMD updates did not overwrite configuration files, that the startup script uses the intended installation directory and that the host firewall rule still applies. Keep configuration backups and record the last known-good build so you can roll back settings when an update changes behavior.
Linux fails before the game starts
Verify GLIBC 2.17 or newer, file permissions and the executable’s required libraries. A successful SteamCMD download does not prove that the operating system can run the dedicated-server binary.
Is a free Squad server right for your use case?
- Private practice or clan event: an unlicensed home server is often adequate if players can use Custom Servers and you can tolerate setup work.
- Mod and configuration testing: self-hosting gives you direct access to rotations and configuration files without committing to a long provider contract.
- Public community: plan for the licensed-server memory, physical-hardware, public-access and admin-ratio rules before opening recruitment.
- Always-on competitive server: a provider is usually more practical because data-center connectivity, monitoring and replacement hardware reduce home-network failure points.
Checklist before you call it “free”
- Confirm whether the server is licensed and which browser tab players should use.
- Verify the host has enough RAM: 8 GB minimum for a licensed instance, plus 4 GB per additional instance.
- Check Linux GLIBC 2.17 or newer if applicable.
- Install AppID 403240 with SteamCMD and back up
SquadGame/ServerConfig/. - Confirm current ports in the documentation; 7787 and 27165 are commonly cited setup values, not a permanent promise.
- Test from outside your home network.
- Write an update, backup, restart and moderation plan.
- For trials, record the end date, renewal price, cancellation method and file-export process.
Free Squad hosting is realistic for a controlled, unlicensed server when you are willing to operate the infrastructure yourself. It is not a shortcut to a free, publicly listed, fully staffed 24/7 community. Primary-browser placement requires Offworld’s licensing conditions, and reliable public operation usually makes a paid host the simpler choice.
