What you need before installing
Vault Hunters has separate client and server files. A client-only modpack profile is not a substitute for the server pack. Download the server bundle for the exact Third Edition release you intend to run, then keep that release number recorded for every player and every future update.

Server storage grows as players explore, logs accumulate, and you retain backups or old update archives. Keep the live world and backup copies on separate storage whenever possible; a failed drive should not destroy both.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Self-hosting at home or on your own machine
Self-hosting is appropriate when one player can leave a computer online, manage operating-system and Java updates, and troubleshoot network access. You control the world files, configuration, restart schedule, and backup policy. There is no mandatory monthly hosting charge, but electricity, hardware, internet service, and your time are real costs.
- You install and maintain Java, Forge, the server pack, and any configuration changes.
- You must make the server reachable to friends outside your home network by configuring the computer firewall and, where required, the router.
- You are responsible for uptime, crash recovery, world backups, and restoring a backup after a bad update.
- You decide who can join and can use a whitelist to restrict access.
Managed hosting
A managed host supplies a control panel, provider networking, restart controls, and a documented modpack installation process. The official Vault Hunters CurseForge page identifies BisectHosting as its verified server-hosting partner. Its automated installer can install and update the modpack; the page also displays a VaultHunters promotion code, but code validity, price, plan memory, and regional availability can change, so verify those terms when ordering.

CurseForge also documents a hosted-server flow powered by Shockbyte. When a matching server pack is available, the flow avoids manual file uploads and port forwarding and lets the owner invite friends after creation. Availability and terms depend on the modpack and the hosting integration shown in CurseForge at the time you create the server.

Download the correct Vault Hunters server pack
- Open the official Vault Hunters Third Edition project page on CurseForge.
- Select the server-files ZIP for the exact release you plan to play. Do not download only the client profile.
- Record the release identifier and share it with every player so all installations remain aligned.
- Keep the original ZIP unchanged. It is useful for rebuilding the server or checking which files belonged to a particular release.
The server pack is the authoritative bundle for the server: it contains the Forge launch files, libraries, mods, and configuration expected by that release. Mixing files from another release can cause missing-mod, registry, or world-loading errors.
Route A: install a self-hosted server
1. Create a dedicated server directory
Make a folder used only for this Vault Hunters instance. A dedicated directory keeps the world, logs, configuration, libraries, and backups together without mixing them with another Minecraft installation. Extract the server-files ZIP into that folder rather than running it from inside the archive.
2. Use the required Java version and launch files
Install Java 17 for the Third Edition 1.18.2 pack. Use the Forge launch script or launch files included with the server pack instead of inventing a different command. If the script cannot find Java, correct the Java path in the script or system environment before changing mod files.

3. Start once to generate files
Run the supplied launch script from the server directory. The first start creates configuration files and the world directory. Read the EULA file that appears, accept it according to its instructions, and then stop the server cleanly before editing settings. Do not make configuration changes while the server is still writing files.
4. Set the initial server properties
Edit the generated server properties while the process is stopped. Choose a world name and difficulty, enable a whitelist if the server is for invited friends, and set view distance and simulation distance appropriate to the machine. Change one group of settings at a time so a later problem can be traced to a specific edit.
5. Make the machine reachable
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the server computer’s local address. Players elsewhere need the server port selected in server.properties to reach that machine. Give the server computer a fixed local address, create the matching firewall rule, and forward that port in the router when your network requires it.
Router menus and firewall labels differ by manufacturer, operating system, and internet provider. Use the device documentation for the exact path and confirm that the forwarding rule points to the fixed local address of the server computer. Do not expose unrelated administration ports, and remove a forwarding rule if you retire the server.
6. Install the matching client on every computer
Each player should install the same Vault Hunters client release through CurseForge or another supported launcher. Everyone must use Minecraft 1.18.2, the corresponding Forge version, and the same modpack files as the server. A player who launches a different release may see missing-mod or registry errors even when the server itself is healthy.
7. Run without the graphical interface
Once the first launch works, use the pack’s non-graphical or console launch option for unattended operation. Keep the console visible through a terminal, service manager, or remote session so you can see startup errors, player joins, saves, and shutdown messages. Stop the server through its console rather than abruptly closing the process whenever possible.

8. Back up before changes
Schedule world backups and make an additional copy before changing the modpack release, Forge files, or major configuration. Stop the server before copying a live world so files are not captured mid-save. Store at least one backup away from the machine running the server and periodically test that a backup can actually be restored.
Networking for friends outside your home
Home hosting has two separate tasks: allowing the server process through the computer firewall and directing the chosen Minecraft port from the router to the correct computer. Completing only one of those tasks will still leave remote players unable to connect.
Use a stable local address
Assign the server machine a fixed local address or a router reservation. Without a stable address, a reboot can give the computer a different address and silently break the forwarding rule. The exact reservation screen depends on the router, so follow its documentation.
Share only the connection information players need
Give invited players the public address and selected Minecraft port, not the router’s administration credentials or the server computer’s operating-system login. Keep the whitelist enabled when the world is private, and remove former players when your group changes.
Know when hosting is the simpler option
If your router or internet provider does not allow the required inbound connection, or you do not want to maintain firewall rules, managed hosting avoids that home-network work. A hosted CurseForge flow with a matching server pack is specifically designed to remove manual port forwarding.
Route B: install with managed hosting
Automated BisectHosting installation
BisectHosting’s documented current procedure is:
- Stop the Minecraft server in the hosting control panel.
- Open the Minecraft Tools or Modloader tool.
- Search for
Vault Hunters 3rd Edition. - Select the modpack and confirm the file-handling option requested by the panel.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then start the server.
The provider states that Vault Hunters Third Edition requires at least 10 GB of RAM to run smoothly. Treat that as the minimum for this edition, not as a promise that every player count or configuration will perform identically. Check the plan’s actual memory, location, renewal price, and cancellation terms before purchasing.

Manual server-pack upload
Use the manual route when the automated tool is unavailable or when you need direct control over the uploaded files:
- Stop the server.
- Download the matching Third Edition server pack.
- Open the host’s Files tab and upload the ZIP.
- Unarchive the ZIP in the server directory.
- Configure server properties while the process is stopped.
- Start the server and watch the console for errors.
The manual guide notes that the Voice Chat mod is included. It must be configured for the server to boot; if your group does not want voice chat, disable that mod according to the pack or host instructions instead of leaving an incomplete configuration in place.
CurseForge hosted-server creation
When CurseForge shows a hosted-server option for the exact modpack and a matching server pack, follow its creation wizard, select the relevant pack, and invite friends from the resulting server controls. The documented advantage is that the hosted flow handles the server files and network path without requiring you to upload the pack manually or forward a port on your home router.
Keep clients, server files, and Java aligned
Version control is the most important prevention step for modded-server errors. Write down the release identifier, Minecraft version, Forge version, and Java requirement used by the server. Give that same information to players before they connect.

- Tell players not to launch the new release yet.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world and configuration to a dated backup location.
- Install the new server pack and its required Java or Forge version.
- Start the server and let it complete its migration.
- Check the console for errors and confirm the world loads.
- Only then have players update their clients to the same release.
Never update only one side and ask players to test randomly. A mismatch can present as a missing mod, a registry error, or a world that fails to load. If that happens, stop the server, restore the previous server files and world backup if necessary, and bring every client back to the last known-good release before investigating further.

Client memory is not server memory
The official wiki’s 8 GB recommendation applies to the client modpack. BisectHosting’s at-least-10-GB guidance applies to a Third Edition server. These figures answer different questions and should not be combined into a claim that each player needs a fixed amount of server RAM.

No official source supplies a universal RAM-per-player formula or a performance guarantee. Start with the documented server baseline, watch the console and host metrics during exploration, and increase resources only when observed usage or sustained lag justifies it. Avoid allocating nearly all of a computer’s physical memory to Java; the operating system and other services also need room.
What consumes disk space
- The extracted server pack, Forge libraries, and configuration files
- The world as players explore new terrain
- Logs and crash reports
- Dated backups and pre-update copies
- Temporary files created during extraction or migration
The approximately 3 GB figure in the official client requirements is a starting point for the player installation, not a cap for a long-running server. Keep free space available so a world save, update archive, or backup cannot fill the disk and stop the server.

Maintenance that prevents lost worlds
Backups
Back up before every version or mod change and on a regular schedule while the world is active. Use dated folders or filenames so you can identify the release and time associated with each copy. Keep at least one copy on separate storage, and perform a trial restore on a spare directory rather than assuming a file copy is usable.
Updates
Read the release notes for the exact Vault Hunters version, verify the required Java version, and update the server and clients together. Preserve the previous server pack until the new world has loaded successfully and players have confirmed that their expected content is present.
Access control
Use the whitelist for a private friends’ server, keep operator privileges limited, and do not share administrative credentials. Review the whitelist when someone leaves the group. A managed panel may provide additional permission controls, but the principle is the same: grant only the access each person needs.
Routine checks
- Review startup and shutdown logs for new errors.
- Confirm that scheduled backups completed and have enough free storage.
- Check that the server still has the intended Java and modpack release after updates.
- Restart during a planned window if the process or host requires it.
- Record configuration changes so you can reverse a setting that causes instability.
Troubleshooting common first-launch problems

Which hosting route fits your group?
Choose self-hosting when you value direct file access, have a machine that can stay available, and are comfortable with Java, Forge, router rules, and recovery procedures. Choose managed hosting when the group wants a shorter setup, remote availability without home port forwarding, and a control panel for installation and restarts. In either case, the reliable path is the same: use the official server pack, keep all versions aligned, start with the documented memory baseline, and make backups before changes.
