To host BTH – Beyond The Horizon, install its matching Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server-full package, allocate about 6–8 GB of RAM for a small group (10–12 GB for 10 or more players), use fast SSD storage, and keep the client and server pack versions identical. Plan extra disk and CPU capacity for Distant Horizons: a fully pre-generated overworld can require about 20 GB, and world generation is the main source of early lag.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you are hosting
BTH – Beyond The Horizon is a Minecraft modpack by SonoranViking. It is not the similarly named Steam game or the separate nautical MMO. The current main release listed for the pack uses Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and has a server-full ZIP intended for dedicated servers. The pack combines exploration, Distant Horizons, technology, magic, expanded world generation, vehicles and building.

A client with a different pack revision, a missing mod or a different loader can fail during the handshake even when the server itself is healthy.
Distant Horizons is central to the pack’s visual range, but it changes the hosting workload. The pack’s own description calls it “an experimental and resource-intensive mod.” On a server, it creates level-of-detail (LOD) data while terrain is explored. That work consumes CPU time, memory, storage and disk I/O, so BTH needs more planning than a lightly modded survival server.

The CurseForge project page recorded 216,353 downloads in a 2026 search capture. That number is a snapshot, not a promise of current activity or support, but it indicates that the pack has a substantial player audience.
Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
There are two sensible ways to run BTH. Self-hosting gives you complete control over files, Java/Forge launch options, backups and custom changes. A managed Minecraft host handles the operating system and usually gives you a web panel, console and file manager. The correct choice depends on whether you want to administer a server or simply invite players.
| Route | Best fit | What you handle | What the provider handles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host on a PC or VPS | An administrator comfortable with Linux or Windows, networking and backups | Operating-system updates, Forge files, firewall and port forwarding, resource allocation, backups, updates and troubleshooting | Nothing beyond the infrastructure you rent or own |
| Managed BTH hosting | A group that wants a panel and support instead of server administration | Pack settings, player permissions, world management and backup checks | Panel installation, the underlying machine, storage and commonly DDoS mitigation; exact features vary by plan |
For a private group, a managed plan can be worthwhile if it supports the exact BTH release and Forge 1.20.1. For a technical administrator, a VPS or a spare machine can be cheaper and more flexible, but you remain responsible for every failure and recovery task.
Plan the machine before installing
Memory by player count
Published BTH hosting guidance recommends starting with 6–8 GB of RAM for a small group and 10–12 GB for 10 or more players. Treat those figures as the server allocation, not the total physical memory in the machine: the operating system, file cache and other services still need headroom. Added mods or plugins increase the requirement.
| Expected population | Starting server allocation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Small group | 6–8 GB | A practical starting range for a few friends; increase it if exploration, extra mods or simultaneous chunk generation causes pressure |
| 10 or more players | 10–12 GB | The published starting range for a larger group; leave additional memory for the operating system and any other services |
| Custom mods or plugins | More than the ranges above may be required | The published guidance explicitly warns that additions increase demand; measure your server rather than assuming the base-pack figure is sufficient |
More RAM does not repair a weak CPU or slow disk. BTH’s terrain and LOD generation is active work, so prioritize a recent multi-core CPU and fast SSD or NVMe storage. Use a 64-bit operating system. Avoid placing the world on a slow external drive or a nearly full disk.
Disk capacity
The project documentation estimates about 20 GB for a fully pre-generated overworld, including ordinary region files and Distant Horizons LOD data. That is the world alone. Keep additional capacity for the server files, logs, temporary update copies and at least one backup. A machine with only 20 GB total storage will run out of space as soon as you create a backup or retain multiple worlds.

Network and location
Players connect to the address and port exposed by your machine or host. A home server normally needs firewall and router configuration; a VPS or managed host usually provides a public address. Choose a location close to most players to reduce latency. Expose only the Minecraft service you need, keep administrative panels protected, and do not publish console credentials in a public chat.
Install the official BTH server package
Use the server-full ZIP for the same BTH release that your players install. Do not build a server by copying only the mods folder from a client installation: the server package can include scripts, configuration and launch files that the client archive does not.
- Create a clean directory. Make a new folder dedicated to BTH. Keeping it separate from other Minecraft servers prevents an old Forge installation or unrelated configuration from being loaded accidentally.
- Download the matching server-full ZIP. Select the current Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge release from the pack’s distribution page. Record the pack version so every player can select the identical client release.
- Extract the archive without changing its layout. Preserve the supplied folders, libraries, scripts and configuration files. If your operating system adds a second nested folder, verify that the launcher and server files are in the directory you intend to run.
- Run the supplied Forge/server launcher once. The first run creates files such as the world directory and server configuration. Let it finish or stop cleanly after the initial generation; do not invite players until the console reaches a stable state.
- Accept Mojang’s EULA correctly. Read the EULA, then edit the generated
eula.txtand seteula=trueonly if you accept it. Restart the launcher after saving the file. - Check the first startup. Watch the console for missing-mod messages, a wrong Java or Forge error, permission failures and a normal world-save completion. Resolve errors before changing gameplay settings.
The first startup can take noticeably longer because Forge loads many mods and the pack prepares registries. A long pause is not automatically a crash; use the console output and the process status to distinguish active generation from a stopped process.
Configure access and player permissions
Server properties
After the first run, open server.properties and set the access policy, world options and network values you actually need. Make one change at a time and restart when the server requires it. Keep a copy of this file because it contains the choices that define how your world is reached and played.

Whitelist and operator access
For a private group, enable a whitelist and add players deliberately. Operator privileges should be limited to people who administer the world. Keep whitelist.json and ops.json in your backup set; losing them can either lock out friends or grant unintended control.
Client/server matching
Give players the exact BTH release and Forge 1.20.1 client package. “Almost the same” is not enough: a changed mod version, a client-only addition or a different configuration can produce a mismatch. When someone cannot join, compare the pack version and the client log before changing server settings.

Start the server and establish an operating routine
Keep the server console available during every launch and maintenance window. It is where you see mod-loading errors, world-generation progress, save messages and disconnect reasons. Do not close a terminal window or kill the process while the world is saving; use the server’s normal save and shutdown controls and wait for the process to exit before moving files.
Separate routine administration from experimentation. Make a copy of the configuration before testing a new setting or optional mod, and never test an unverified change on the only copy of an established world.
- Check free disk space before starting a large pre-generation job.
- Watch CPU, memory and disk activity while players explore new terrain.
- Keep the console or panel log available when a player reports a crash or a missing block.
- Schedule backups when nobody is writing to the world, or stop the server first for a consistent copy.
Pre-generate terrain to reduce exploration lag
New chunks are expensive in BTH because normal terrain generation and Distant Horizons LOD creation happen as players move into unexplored areas. Pre-generation moves that cost to a controlled maintenance window. It does not make generation free: it consumes CPU time, writes a large amount of data and can run for a long period.
Overworld command
With the server running and the Distant Horizons server tools loaded, the documented overworld command is:
/dh pregen start minecraft:overworld 0 0 512
This starts a radius-based job centered on the supplied coordinates. Confirm the syntax in the BTH documentation before changing the center or radius, and monitor the console rather than assuming that the command completed instantly.
Other dimensions
The project documentation also lists dimension-specific pre-generation commands for the Nether, End, Aether and Ratlantis. Use those documented commands for the dimensions your group will visit; do not substitute an Overworld identifier for another dimension.

Choose a practical radius
A larger radius increases both run time and storage. Start with the area your players will actually use, then expand during a maintenance window. Because a fully pre-generated Overworld with region and LOD files is estimated at about 20 GB, check the disk before launching a broad job and reserve room for backups.
Players may still generate terrain outside the prepared area. Pre-generation reduces the largest spikes near the center; it does not place an infinite world on disk or prevent every future chunk from being generated.
Managed hosting options documented for BTH
Several providers publish BTH-specific installation or hosting information. Availability, plan limits and supported pack versions can change, so verify the current release, guaranteed resources and backup terms before paying.
| Provider | Documented BTH path or capability | Published resource or service details |
|---|---|---|
| DedicatedMinecraft.host | Install BTH from its panel’s CurseForge library | Dedicated CPU and RAM, NVMe storage and DDoS protection are advertised |
| VeryGames | BTH support through the DediGames panel | RAM is configurable |
| Ouiheberg | One-click Forge 1.20.1 installation | Recommends at least 8 GB RAM and lists backups, databases, DDoS protection and multiple locations |
| ScalaCube | Servers → Game servers → Add Game Server → BTH – Beyond The Horizon | Uses a control-panel selection for the pack |
These descriptions show installation routes, not independent performance tests. Ask each provider whether the listed BTH entry uses the current server-full package, whether you can upload custom mods, how much CPU is guaranteed, and how a world backup is restored.

Managed-hosting comparison checklist
- Version and loader: confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not a similarly named pack or a Fabric build.
- Guaranteed resources: distinguish dedicated or reserved CPU and RAM from oversold shared limits. Start at the BTH guidance of 6–8 GB for a small group or 10–12 GB for 10 or more players.
- Storage: choose SSD or NVMe capacity that can hold the server, a pre-generated world of roughly 20 GB and backups.
- Backups: check frequency, retention, off-machine storage and whether you can download a backup yourself.
- Network protection: confirm DDoS protection and the location of the data center relative to your players.
- Administration: require console access, file access and a way to edit
server.properties, whitelist and operator files. - Modpack maintenance: ask who applies BTH updates, whether updates are optional, and whether custom mods or configuration edits survive an update.
Update BTH without wiping the world
Pack updates replace code and configuration, but they should not replace your established world. Jangro’s dated update guide recommends stopping the server and making a full backup before every update.
- Announce maintenance and stop the server. Wait for the process to finish saving and exit. Never overwrite pack files while the world is open.
- Make a complete backup. Copy every world folder, including dimensions created by the pack. Also preserve
server.properties,whitelist.json,ops.jsonand all ban files. Keep the backup outside the live server directory. - Download the new server ZIP. Verify that it is the intended BTH release and still targets Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge if that is the release your clients will use.
- Stage the update separately when possible. Extract the new package into a temporary directory. Compare its configuration files with your saved settings instead of blindly overwriting your existing files.
- Apply the pack files. Replace the modpack’s code, libraries and supplied files according to the update instructions. Reapply your retained server settings, whitelist, operators and bans deliberately.
- Start and inspect the console. Look for missing or duplicate mods, registry errors, data-fix warnings and a successful world load. Stop and restore the backup if the world fails to load or important content is missing.
- Test before deleting anything. Join with an administrator account, visit established bases and dimensions, verify permissions and check that new terrain generates. Keep the backup until players have joined successfully and the updated world has been confirmed.
An update can change configuration defaults or world data even when it does not erase the world directory. Comparing files and retaining the previous pack lets you identify a bad configuration and roll back instead of guessing.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server exits immediately
Check the console for a missing-mod message, a Forge mismatch, a Java error or an unaccepted EULA. Confirm that you launched the files from the extracted server-full package, that the operating system is 64-bit and that eula=true was set only after acceptance. Fix the first reported error before chasing later stack traces.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare the client and server BTH release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge loader. Reinstall the client pack from the same release selected for the server. Do not solve a mismatch by deleting random mods from the server; BTH’s dependency set is curated and a missing library can create a second failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Lag appears when players explore
New terrain and Distant Horizons LOD generation are likely stressing CPU and storage. Check whether the disk is an SSD, whether memory is at the lower end of the recommended range, and whether several players are generating different areas at once. Pre-generate a practical area during a maintenance window and monitor the console while it runs.
The pre-generation job stops or fills the disk
Reduce the radius, clear only files you can identify safely, and restore free space before restarting. Do not delete region or LOD files from a live world to make room. The estimated 20 GB for a fully pre-generated overworld excludes backups and other server files, so increase the storage allocation rather than repeatedly removing world data.
A player cannot connect
Verify that the server process is running, the address and exposed port are correct, and the firewall or router permits the connection. Then check the player’s pack and Forge versions. On a managed host, use its console and network status tools; on a home server, confirm that port forwarding still points to the machine running BTH.
The update loads a different world or loses permissions
Stop the server and inspect the directory you launched. Restore the backed-up world folders and reapply server.properties, whitelist.json, ops.json and ban files. Keep the old pack and backup untouched until the corrected installation has been tested.
A practical launch checklist
- Confirm the pack is BTH – Beyond The Horizon, not another similarly named game.
- Use the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server-full ZIP that matches every client.
- Allocate 6–8 GB for a small group or 10–12 GB for 10 or more players, with extra capacity for additions.
- Run on a 64-bit system with SSD or NVMe storage.
- Reserve substantially more than 20 GB if you will pre-generate the Overworld and retain backups.
- Complete the first launch, accept the EULA, and resolve console errors.
- Set access, whitelist and operator permissions before sharing the address.
- Pre-generate only the area your players need, using the documented Distant Horizons command.
- Back up the world and administrative JSON/configuration files before every update.
- Test the updated world with an administrator account before inviting the whole group.
With the matching Forge package, adequate memory, fast storage and a disciplined backup routine, BTH can run reliably on a self-managed machine or a managed panel. The distinctive work is planning for Distant Horizons: pre-generation and LOD data are what separate a smooth exploration session from sudden CPU, disk and memory pressure.
