Downloading a theme also does not install the associated game. It is a personalization download that changes how Windows looks.
Which free game themes are currently listed?
Microsoft announced the Store Themes department on December 11, 2025, saying the rollout began with more than 400 themes, including more than 35 new additions. The catalog is live rather than fixed, so a title that appears today may be revised, moved, or unavailable in another country. Check the listing in your own Microsoft Store account before downloading.

Use the exact title in Microsoft Store search if a theme does not appear in the first results. Look for the publisher information, the preview images, and a button marked Free before selecting Get. Do not assume that a listing seen in a screenshot or an older article is still offered in every market.
How do I install a game theme on Windows 11?
The supported route is built into Windows and takes only a few clicks:
- Open Settings from the Start menu or with Windows key + I.
- Select Personalization in the Settings sidebar.
- Open Themes.
- Select Browse themes. Windows opens the Microsoft Store personalization section.
- Open a game theme’s listing, choose Get or the equivalent download button, and wait for installation to finish.

If the Store window opens but the theme is not applied automatically, that is expected: downloading and applying are separate actions. Select the new thumbnail on the Themes page after the download completes.
How do I install a game theme on Windows 10?
Windows 10 uses essentially the same Personalization workflow. Open Settings > Personalization > Themes, choose Get more themes in Microsoft Store or the available browse option, download the pack, and then select it from the installed themes shown on the Themes page.

What it does not change

The Microsoft Store route is the simplest choice when you want an official, reversible desktop look. A wallpaper utility is more appropriate when motion matters. Manual files offer flexibility, but you must evaluate the source yourself and confirm that the package is intended for your Windows version.
How can I customize a game theme after applying it?
You do not have to keep every setting exactly as supplied. Windows lets you modify the individual parts from Personalization while leaving the theme available for later use.
- Change the wallpaper: Open Settings > Personalization > Background, then choose a picture, solid color, or slideshow and set the fit mode.
- Change the accent: Open Settings > Personalization > Colors and select a different accent or light/dark mode.
- Adjust sounds: Open the classic sound controls from Windows’ sound settings if the theme supplied audio and you want another sound scheme.
- Change the pointer: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Pointers to select a cursor scheme.

What should Windows 10 users know about support?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system.
That end-of-support status does not automatically prevent an existing personalization theme from appearing or working. It does mean that a Windows 10 guide should not present the platform as receiving current security maintenance. If your computer supports it, moving to a supported Windows release is a separate operating-system decision from installing a wallpaper theme.

Why can’t I find or apply a free game theme?
The Browse themes option is missing
Confirm that you are in Settings > Personalization > Themes, not the Background page. On Windows 10, the link may be labeled as getting more themes from Microsoft Store rather than “Browse themes.”
The named game does not appear
Store inventory changes, and Microsoft can show different personalization listings by country or account region. Search the complete title, check the game’s official wording, and verify whether the listing is still marked free before using a third-party download.
The download finished but nothing changed
Return to the Themes page and select the newly installed thumbnail. If the wallpaper changed but the color did not, open Colors and choose the accent manually; Windows allows those components to be overridden independently.
The result is not animated
That is normal for a standard Store theme. The current Store presentation focuses on wallpaper collections and accent colors; use a dedicated wallpaper utility if animated backgrounds are the requirement.
A manual pack behaves unexpectedly
Check whether it is a .theme file or a .cab package and confirm that its referenced wallpapers, sounds, cursors, or icons are present. If the source is unclear, remove the manual pack and use the Microsoft Store workflow instead.
Is a free Microsoft Store game theme worth using?
For a quick, low-effort desktop refresh, an official Store theme is the most straightforward option: it is discovered from Windows settings, downloaded through Microsoft Store, and applied from the Themes page. It is also easy to reverse by selecting another saved theme.
