Yes—you can view older or cached versions of the current webpage for free in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. For the widest documented archive coverage, install Web Archives. For trusted Internet Archive history, recovery of a 404 page’s archived copy, and the ability to save a page in the Wayback Machine, use the official Wayback Machine extension. Web Cache Viewer is a smaller Chrome shortcut that opens destinations named in its store listing.
These extensions do not recreate pages that were never captured. They send the page address to one or more web archives, where you select an existing snapshot. A replay can be incomplete when an archive missed the page’s stylesheets, scripts, images, or other assets.

What is a free web cache viewer?
A free web cache viewer is a browser extension or web service that looks up archived and cached versions of a URL. Instead of reading the live site, it opens a copy stored by an archive crawler or saved by a user. The extension is a shortcut to those archives; it is not a recovery tool that can reconstruct an unsaved page.
Use one when a page was deleted, changed after an event, returns an error, or needs to be checked as it appeared on an earlier date. Results depend on whether an archive captured the exact address, including its protocol, hostname, path, and query string.

- Open the oldest or newest known capture.
- Open a calendar overview to select a date.
- See a snapshot count for the page.
- Automatically check for an archived copy when the live page returns a 4xx or 5xx error.
- Use right-click actions from a page or link.
That automatic error check is the practical reason to install the Wayback Machine extension on a site you regularly browse: a missing page can lead directly to a historical copy instead of a dead end.
What Save Page Now does
Save Page Now creates a permanent URL for one page. Internet Archive says the process can save the entered page with images and CSS, but it does not save outlinks or an entire site. Some sites or SSL settings can prevent a capture, so a successful submission is not a guarantee that every asset will replay.
What does Web Cache Viewer do in Chrome?
Web Cache Viewer adds right-click actions for older or cached versions. The Chrome Web Store listing describes links to the Wayback Machine or Google Cache and reports version 2.0, updated February 24, 2025.
It is appropriate when you want a lightweight shortcut rather than archive selection and history controls. Because that listing is older than the other entries, treat each advertised destination as a claim to verify: a cache service may have changed, disappeared, or stopped accepting requests even though the extension remains installed.

How do you view an older or cached version of the current webpage?
The same workflow works with most extensions, although menu names differ. Start with the browser’s official extension store and keep the original URL open while you search.
- Install from an official store. Review the publisher, permissions, supported browser, and last-update date before selecting Add to Chrome, Add to Firefox, or the equivalent Edge control. If you do not want an extension, open the Wayback Machine site directly.
- Open the target address. Load the missing, changed, or error-producing page. For a link you have not opened, right-click the link instead of navigating to it first.
- Run the archive search. Select the toolbar icon or the context-menu command. In Web Archives, choose an archive engine when more than one result is offered; in the Wayback extension, use its history or error-recovery action.
- Try address variants. If there is no capture, search both
http://andhttps://, and bothwww.example.comandexample.comwhen those versions are plausible. Archives index these as different URLs. - Choose a date near the event. A capture immediately before a redesign, deletion, or announcement is usually more informative than the newest available copy. Open more than one nearby date when the first replay lacks assets.
- Record the archive URL and capture date. Keep the replay address, not just the live URL, when you need to share or cite what you saw.
How do you view a 404 page’s archived copy?
The official Wayback Machine extension is the clearest option for this case because it documents automatic checks after a 4xx or 5xx response. Open the dead URL, let the extension offer an archived result, and then select a date from the history or calendar view.
If no Wayback capture appears, run the same URL through Web Archives or another multi-archive viewer. Check protocol and hostname variants before concluding that no copy exists. A page may have been saved in one archive but never crawled by another.

Use Save Page Now when the live page is available and you want a future reference. Submit the single page address through the Wayback extension or the Internet Archive interface, wait for the capture process to finish, and copy the resulting permanent URL.

- The operation targets one page, not an entire site.
- Fetched images and CSS may be included, but missing, blocked, or dynamically generated assets can still make the replay look incomplete.
- Outlinks are not automatically saved as part of that submission.
- Some sites and SSL configurations can prevent a capture.
Why does an archived page look broken?
A broken replay usually means the archive did not store every dependency or the browser is interfering with the replay. The HTML may be present while linked stylesheets, scripts, fonts, or images are absent.
Try a different capture
Open a nearby date, preferably one made before or after the same event. Captures taken only days apart can have different asset completeness, and an older copy may preserve files that a newer crawl missed.
Try another archive
Search with Web Archives or another multi-archive viewer when the first service has no capture or an unusable replay. Each archive has its own crawler schedule and storage rules.
Check the browser session
Privacy extensions, a stale browser cache, and an outdated browser can interfere with archived pages. Temporarily disable a conflicting extension or open the replay in a private window, a troubleshooting step also documented for Archive-It users. Re-enable protections after testing.

Before installing, read the store’s permission disclosure and determine whether the extension can read the current tab, page content, or site data. The extension must send at least the selected URL to an archive service, but the exact data flow depends on its implementation.

- Prefer a publisher with a clear project identity and a recent update history.
- Use a right-click search on a selected link when you do not want to grant broad page access, if the extension offers that mode.
- Do not submit private, password-protected, or confidential URLs to a public archive.
- After installing, inspect the browser’s extension details and remove access you do not need.
What are the limits of archived and cached versions?
An archive can only open a capture it actually holds. A crawler may have missed a page, been blocked, or stored only some of its assets. Login-only pages, personalized dashboards, search results generated after submission, and heavily scripted applications are especially prone to incomplete replays because the archive receives a particular request rather than your whole browsing session.
A saved page is also not equivalent to a saved site. Save Page Now is explicitly limited to a single page and does not follow outlinks. For a site-wide historical project, you need captures that were collected over time; a one-page submission cannot create that history retroactively.

Which viewer fits common jobs?
- Find any surviving copy: Start with Web Archives and try more than one archive engine.
- Recover a broken link while browsing: Use the official Wayback Machine extension’s automatic 4xx/5xx check.
- Inspect a page’s historical timeline: Use the Wayback extension’s calendar, oldest, newest, and snapshot-count tools.

What should you do when no archive has a copy?
Confirm the exact URL, test the protocol and hostname variants, and search a second archive. If the page is still live, submit it to Save Page Now for future reference. If every archive returns no capture and the live page is gone, a browser extension cannot recreate the missing content; you will need another independent copy such as a quoted document, download, or source supplied by the publisher.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a browser extension recover a page that no archive ever captured?
No. Extensions query stored captures and cannot infer the missing page from its URL alone. Searching alternate protocol and hostname forms may reveal a separate capture, but an uncaptured page requires another source or a copy saved by its owner.
Why do two archive dates show different text or images?
Each date represents a separate crawl or save event, so the page and its dependencies may have changed between captures. Open the date closest to the event you are investigating and compare a second nearby capture when an image, stylesheet, or script is missing.
Can I use these viewers on a phone?
The Firefox listing for Web Archives reports Firefox for Android availability. The other browser and extension combinations documented here are desktop-oriented, so check the relevant store entry before expecting the same toolbar or context-menu controls on mobile.
Does saving one page preserve the links inside it?
Save Page Now creates a capture for the submitted page and may fetch its images and CSS, but it does not automatically archive the pages linked from that document. Each important outlink must be submitted or captured separately.
