Frieza’s forms are not all power-ups. His First, Second, and Third Forms suppress his power; Final Form is his natural body. Golden Frieza is a trained evolution of that body, and Black Frieza is a later manga-only form earned through ten years of Time Chamber training. The distinction explains why his small first form can destroy a planet—and why Black Frieza’s debut is such a dramatic escalation.
What is the order of Frieza’s forms?
The Super-era sequence is First Form, Second Form, Third Form, Final Form, Golden Frieza, True Golden Frieza, and Black Frieza. Mecha Frieza belongs between Final Form and Golden in the character’s history, but it is a cybernetic reconstruction rather than a natural transformation. The order matters: the first three forms conceal or limit Frieza’s power, whereas Golden and Black are trained evolutions.

In story terms, though, it is his birth form. His earlier bodies are the exceptional states; his smooth, hornless Final Form is what he looks like without those restraints.
Why does Frieza have suppression forms?
Frieza’s first three forms are ways to keep his power under control, not stages he must reach to become stronger. On Namek, Vegeta describes Frieza’s kind as able to alter their shape to conserve energy or disguise themselves. Frieza says his own case is different: he remains in his current form so his power will not run amok.

That is why First Form can look modest while still being terrifying. Frieza can destroy Planet Vegeta with a casual blast and kill King Vegeta in one blow without appearing in his strongest body. His reduced stature is not evidence that he lacks destructive power; it is one part of how he restrains it.
Frieza’s race, sometimes described as his clan, grows and sheds a Bio Suit as it changes shape. The Namek transformations alter his body plan, while Golden and Black largely recolor the familiar Final Form. Universe 6’s Frost has analogous early forms, suggesting the first shells are not a quirk unique to Frieza. In Resurrection ‘F’, Frieza trains to move directly from First Form to Final Form, skipping the second and third shells.

What does each Namek-era form do?
First Form: the restrained public face
First Form is the small, horned, white-and-purple body usually associated with Frieza’s battle armor and hover pod. It is his lowest suppression state, not a measure of his maximum strength. Frieza still opens his post-revival appearance in Dragon Ball Super in this form; Gohan cannot defeat him even while he is suppressed.
The familiar statistic is 530,000 First Form battle power—Frieza’s in-series statement to Nail, compiled by CBR in 2024. The number is already immense by Namek’s standards, but it should not be treated as a current measurement of Frieza’s later forms.
Second Form: the taller, more brutal shell
Second Form makes Frieza much taller and bulkier, with horns that curve upward like a bull’s. The first-form armor shatters as he changes, and he uses the horns to gore Krillin. Frieza boasts, “Heh heh heh! You’re in for it now. My second form makes the one you’re familiar with look as gentle as a sleeping kitten.”
Its reported figure is over 1,000,000 Second Form battle power—Frieza’s in-series claim, compiled by CBR in 2024. That is a character’s stated figure, not an independently measured value. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Frieza declines to use this shape when Kikono suggests it could make him look taller; Frieza wants height in his natural form instead. King Cold has a similar silhouette, but that resemblance does not make him a step in Frieza’s transformation ladder.

Third Form is the elongated-skull, heavily spiked shape Frieza uses mainly against Piccolo after Piccolo fuses with Nail. It is the final suppression shell before Frieza reveals his natural body, and it appears only briefly. Frost’s Universe 6 “Charging” or “Assault” Form is an analogue.

No in-series numeric power level is published for Third Form. CBR’s 2024 power-level roundup also notes the gap, so a precise figure or multiplier for this form would be speculation.
Is Final Form Frieza’s strongest natural form?
Final Form is Frieza’s natural body, but it is not the ceiling of his power after he learns to train. When the Bio Suit breaks away on Namek, the result is a sleek, hornless body, slightly taller than First Form and with a higher voice. After his return from Hell, this is often his Super-era default.
Two commonly cited Namek figures are 60,000,000 for Final Form at 50% and 120,000,000 for Final Form full power. CBR’s 2024 “Canon Power Level” table presents those as canon power levels. They are guidebook-style figures, not recent measurements of his strength in Dragon Ball Super. The full-power state bulks Frieza up dramatically; ScreenRant describes the change after roughly 85% power, and CBR’s 2025 design ranking notes the familiar inefficiency of a muscle-swollen form. The increased output costs stamina.

Frieza uses the same 100% Full Power push again in the Tournament of Power against Frost. It is an exertion of the natural body, not a separate colored evolution such as Golden Frieza.
What was Mecha Frieza?
Mecha Frieza is Frieza rebuilt with cybernetics after his defeat on Namek. King Cold’s doctors reconstruct him, but Super Saiyan Future Trunks defeats him in a single strike. When Frieza is later revived for Resurrection ‘F’ and Dragon Ball Super, the medical machine restores him to a fully organic body.
That makes Mecha Frieza a historical detour, not a form in the Super-era ladder of combat evolutions. It neither represents a new biological shell nor explains how Golden or Black Frieza works.
How did Frieza unlock Golden Frieza?
Golden Frieza is the first genuine trained power-up in the ladder. Frieza had never trained before his revival; afterward, he trained for about four months and unlocked a form he called his “Ultimate Evolution” (Kyūkyoku Shinka). It debuts in the 2015 film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, appears in the Dragon Ball Super anime from episode 24, and is also in the Super manga. Frieza explains the name in the film: “I know gold’s a bit gauche, but I wanted to ensure you grasp my new position atop the pecking order. And for the sake of your feeble mind, let’s keep the name simple as well; we’ll call this Golden Frieza.”

The form keeps Final Form’s basic outline but turns much of Frieza’s body gold, with darker gold on the limbs and purple on the face, hands, and feet. His aura is flame-like and his ki appears redder. The design is a visual change; the important difference is that it represents power Frieza gained through training, rather than another shell used to suppress his natural strength.
Why did Golden Frieza run out of power?
Frieza rushed into a fight before mastering his new form. Goku identifies the flaw in Resurrection ‘F’: “Your new form is burning through more power than your body can supply. You should have waited until you were used to this form and knew how to regulate it before you started picking fights.” In the anime, unmastered Golden lasts just over five minutes before Frieza’s power drops sharply.
A January 2017 V-Jump danger ranking placed Golden Frieza eighth out of 12 rivals and described its strength as above Super Saiyan Blue. That ranking does not provide an official numeric battle power. The stamina problem is eventually overcome: in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Frieza fights Super Saiyan Broly for one hour in Golden form. Vegeta’s warning in that film points to the risk of further growth: “You remember how much stronger Frieza was when he came back to Earth? What happens when he achieves a newer form?!”
What is True Golden Frieza?
True Golden Frieza is the anime’s name for Golden Frieza after Frieza improves his ki control through mental training in Hell. It is not presented as a wholly different body plan; it is Golden mastered well enough to hold its power without the original stamina collapse.
After a second stint in Hell, Frieza says he used image-training against Goku to endure his surroundings and regulate his energy. During the reveal in “Most Heinous! Most Evil! Frieza’s Rampage!”, he demonstrates different qualities of ki in each hand before unleashing a fiery wave. He calls the result “the true manifestation of Golden Frieza! This is who I truly am in my purest form.”
In the anime, True Golden Frieza fights the Universe 9 assassins, Cabba, Dyspo, Top, and Jiren in the Tournament of Power. He hijacks Sidra’s Energy of Destruction; Roh doubts Sidra could destroy him. Beerus rules a first-punch clash between True Golden Frieza and Super Saiyan Blue Goku a draw, while Goku drops out of Blue and Frieza remains transformed. The Super manga notes Frieza’s image-training but does not use the “True Golden” label or the anime’s explanation of the stamina fix; manga Frieza is simply stronger.
What is Black Frieza, and how did he get it?
Black Frieza is a form Frieza reveals in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears.” In the English Viz release, published in August 2022, he says: “I couldn’t very well keep losing to you Saiyans my whole life, so I needed a bit of a power-up. Meet Black Frieza. Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know.” Viz often spells his name “Freeza”; this article uses the more common “Frieza.”

During a conquest, Frieza finds a Hyperbolic Time Chamber—also called the Room of Spirit and Time or Room of Space and Time—on a conquered planet. He trains inside for ten years. CBR reported in 2024 that ten years in the chamber amounts to about ten days in the outside world, and described it as the longest stay inside claimed by a character. Because the chamber was separated from Universe 7, Granolah’s and Gas’s wishes to become the strongest in the universe did not account for Frieza, according to ComicBook.com’s August 19, 2022 explanation.
Black Frieza’s debut establishes the scale of the result through action rather than a numeric power level. On Planet Cereal, he kills the awakened Gas with one blow, kills Elec, then knocks out True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with one punch to the abdomen each. He does not kill the Saiyans. Later, Goku wonders whether the Oracle Fish’s prophecy about the universe’s strongest warrior might have referred to Frieza; Whis says it may have.
Black Frieza’s design retains the white-and-purple torso and lower face of Final Form, with black across much of the lower body, neck, tail, and arms. Dark silver appears on the guards, hands, feet, and most of the head; later colored art shows a purple aura. It is a recoloring in silhouette, but that does not make it equivalent to True Golden: the forms have different training histories, and Black Frieza’s chapter-87 feats establish a much larger gap.
There is no official numeric battle power for Black Frieza. V-Jump in December 2023 described the extent of his power as something that “cannot be measured” and placed him near God of Destruction territory. The same source, as cited by the Dragon Ball Wiki, puts him by a notable margin above Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Broly, and Piccolo in their strongest forms. Toyotarou’s April 10, 2025 official-site interview around Super volume 24 also connects the power gap to the volume’s presentation: the strongest forms of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly appear together on the cover, while Black Frieza is on the back because his difference in power is a concern. No multiplier against Ultra Instinct is established, so claims that assign one go beyond the available figures.

In his chapter-87 debut, Black Frieza is stronger than the versions of Goku and Vegeta he faces: one punch each knocks out True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta. That is a clear story feat, not a measured ratio, and it does not establish how a future rematch would end.
Toyotarou also explained the color choice in an official Weekly Dragon Ball News interview on January 2, 2023: “We were talking about the top level of a credit card. The level above gold is black. I’m only half-joking. No matter how I look at it, it was the only choice.” The name signals a step beyond Golden, while the chapter and official power descriptions—not a published battle-power number—show what that step means.
Has Black Frieza been animated?
No. As of the June 2026 and December 2025 reports cited here, Black Frieza remains manga-only in the Granolah the Survivor story; Toei has not animated the form. The Super anime and films include Golden Frieza, while the manga continues beyond the anime’s Tournament of Power material. No Granolah or Black Frieza adaptation air date is established in those reports.

For the manga debut, look for Dragon Ball Super chapter 87 in the Viz English release; Shueisha publishes the Japanese volumes. Super volume 24 went on sale in Japan on April 4, 2025, with Black Frieza on the back cover. For the screen versions of Golden Frieza, the key showcases are Resurrection ‘F’ and Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Streaming availability varies by region, so check the current local license listing.
Which Frieza forms are not part of this Super-era sequence?
Several game and film designs are often mixed into online lists, but they are not additional Frieza transformations in the Super canon ladder.

Akira Toriyama’s explanation of Frieza’s lineage helps make the rapid growth after training less arbitrary: he described Frieza’s father as a mutant with abnormally high battle power and Frieza as born with those mutant traits strongly present. It is a story explanation for exceptional potential, not a numeric formula for comparing his forms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Frieza need to use Second and Third Form before Final Form?
No. The Namek sequence shows those shells as available restraints, not mandatory stages. In Resurrection ‘F’, he trains to go from First Form straight to Final Form.
Is Golden Frieza the same form in the anime and manga?
Golden Frieza appears in both continuities, but the anime gives the mastered state the separate name True Golden Frieza and explains its Hell-based ki-control training. The manga mentions image-training without that label.
Why was Frieza able to improve so quickly after never training?
Toriyama described Frieza as inheriting exceptional mutant traits from his father, who also had abnormally high battle power. The story presents that lineage as a reason for his unusual potential, not as a fixed multiplier.
