As of October 30, 2026, you cannot enable AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 on an Xbox Series X or Series S: AMD says console support is “coming soon,” without a release date or confirmed console games. On the Windows-based ROG Xbox Ally X, ASUS documents a preview-update path: install its applicable GPU update, enable FSR Upscaling in AMD Software or Command Center, then turn on FSR in a supported game’s settings. Base Ally owners should check whether their device has received the preview update before following those steps.
Can I enable FSR 4.1 on Xbox Series X or Series S?

What “coming soon” does and does not mean
“Coming soon” is an availability statement, not an activation instruction. It does not identify a dashboard update, a developer patch, a date, a resolution mode, or a performance target. Until AMD or Xbox publishes those details, changing television output settings, reinstalling a game, or searching the console’s general settings cannot expose FSR 4.1.

Console games can implement different technology versions on different platforms. A PC release may expose an FSR 4 option while the Series X|S build continues to use an older upscaler, a fixed internal-resolution mode, or a different implementation. Check the exact console edition and its patch notes when an official rollout is announced.
What do I need before enabling FSR 4.1 on an Xbox Ally?
The documented setup is for the Windows-based ROG Xbox Ally family, not an Xbox Series console. The full-screen Xbox interface does not change the operating system or driver path. Before changing settings, confirm the handheld model, check for ASUS’s applicable GPU preview update, and verify that the game has a supported FSR integration.
ROG Xbox Ally X hardware and update status
ASUS identifies the Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. AMD names that Ryzen Z2 handheld class as eligible for FSR Upscaling 4.1. Eligibility means the processor family can use the technology; it does not mean every unit has already received the ASUS driver or that every game will expose an option.
ASUS announced the Ally X preview GPU update for October 23, 2026. Its instructions use the device’s ASUS OEM GPU driver and either AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or the Command Center shortcut. This is a preview, so ASUS cautions that it may be unstable. Players who prefer a more established driver can wait for an update under Official Updates. ASUS’s Ally FSR 4.1 preview instructions describe the update and setup.
Base ROG Xbox Ally
ASUS identifies the base Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, another class AMD lists as eligible for FSR upscaling. Availability is less clear, however. ASUS’s October 20 article says in its introduction that a base Ally GPU update is coming soon, while its Key Points say FSR 4.1 is already available as a preview for the base Ally as well as the X and X20.
Because those statements conflict, use the device as the authority: open Armoury Crate SE > Update Center > Preview Updates and look for an update specifically offered for your model. If the applicable GPU update appears, install it and follow the setup steps below. If it does not, wait for ASUS’s device-specific update. Do not install a package intended for the Ally X or another handheld merely because the processor names look similar.

ROG Xbox Ally X20
ASUS also names the X20 in its preview announcement. The article is Swiss-localized, so its mention does not establish US retail availability or a launch date in any other market. If you own a compatible X20, use the same principle: install only an ASUS update offered for that exact device through Armoury Crate SE.

How do I turn on FSR 4.1 on the ROG Xbox Ally X?
There are three parts to the process: the OEM driver, the handheld-level FSR switch, and the game’s own integration. Complete them in that order. Close the game before updating the driver.
- Install the ASUS GPU update. Open Armoury Crate SE > Update Center > Preview Updates and install the latest applicable GPU update shown for your Ally X. The preview channel is separate from Official Updates. If you would rather avoid preview software, do not force the installation; wait for an official release.
- Enable FSR Upscaling in AMD Software. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition > Gaming > Graphics and turn on AMD FSR Upscaling. This control is part of the ASUS-supported handheld software path after the appropriate OEM update.
- Use the Command Center alternative. If you prefer the quick panel, open Command Center, press Y to customize its layout, add the FSR Upscaling tile, and switch the tile on. The tile is a shortcut to the same handheld-level control; adding it does not install the driver.
- Start a supported game. Open the game’s graphics or video options and turn on its FSR setting. Select an available quality preset such as Quality or Balanced as a sensible starting point when those choices are offered. The exact names and number of presets belong to the game.
- Interpret the label correctly. Some menus may say “FSR 4” rather than “FSR 4.1.” A label alone is not proof of a particular implementation, but ASUS specifically warns that this naming can appear in supported games.
- Restart if necessary. If the selection does not appear to take effect, close and relaunch the game. Driver-level changes and certain graphics options are not applied to an already-running session.
These are ASUS’s documented vendor instructions. They do not guarantee identical controls in every driver build, game version, display mode, or preview release.
How does the base Ally follow the setup?
If Armoury Crate SE offers the applicable base-Ally preview GPU update, use the same sequence: install the ASUS package, enable AMD FSR Upscaling in AMD Software or add the Command Center tile, then enable FSR in the game’s graphics menu. If the preview update is absent, there is no supported substitute procedure. Generic desktop drivers, copied files, and unofficial downloads are not a replacement for the model-specific ASUS package.

Check the update page again after ASUS changes the preview channel. A missing preview today is an availability issue, not evidence that the base Ally’s Ryzen Z2 A hardware is permanently excluded.
Why does the driver update not enable FSR 4.1 in every game?
The driver makes the feature available to eligible software; the game still needs a compatible FSR integration. AMD describes two relevant paths: native integration of Redstone technologies in a game, or a driver upgrade feature for qualifying titles that integrated FSR 3.1 or newer.
AMD’s live FidelityFX Super Resolution technology page lists supported games and marks some entries with an asterisk. Those marked titles have FSR 3.1 integrated and need the driver upgrade feature. Other entries may have native integration of one or more Redstone technologies. The list is dynamic, and the presence of a title does not establish that every edition, patch, platform build, or Redstone feature is supported.
For a handheld check, open the game’s own graphics menu after enabling the global setting. If the game offers FSR, select it there. If it has only an older upscaler, the driver cannot manufacture a new integration. A game name on AMD’s broad list is not proof that its Xbox console version supports FSR 4.1, either.

What should I check if FSR Upscaling is missing?
Use these checks in order. A missing setting may reflect the device update or the game’s integration, not a lack of hardware eligibility.
- Confirm the device. Series X|S consoles do not have a verified FSR 4.1 procedure yet. On a handheld, confirm whether it is an Ally X, base Ally, or X20.
- Check the ASUS update channel. Look in Armoury Crate SE > Update Center > Preview Updates for an OEM GPU update offered for the exact model. Base Ally availability is not consistent across ASUS’s October 20 statements, so do not assume the update has rolled out.
- Use the ASUS driver, not the desktop package. AMD’s Adrenalin 26.10.1 release notes explicitly say, “AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices.” That generic download is therefore not the documented way to add FSR to an Ally.
- Check the global toggle. In AMD Software, look under Gaming > Graphics for AMD FSR Upscaling. Alternatively, check whether the FSR Upscaling tile has been added to Command Center.
- Check the game’s support and settings. Confirm that the game has a relevant FSR 3.1-or-newer integration or native Redstone support, then look in its graphics or video options. An FSR option for an older version does not prove that FSR 4.1 is active.
- Restart after changing settings. Close and relaunch the game if the new selection does not take effect immediately.
- Avoid stacking upscalers. ASUS advises against combining a game’s FSR with Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). Turn off RSR when using the game’s FSR option so two upscaling paths are not applied together.
- Do not use unofficial fixes. There is no documented need for replacement DLLs, registry edits, repair utilities, or streaming subscriptions. Such downloads can create version mismatches and are not a supported installation method.
- Decide whether to keep the preview. ASUS warns that the preview may be unstable. If that trade-off is not worthwhile, wait for an Official Update instead of treating instability as proof that the hardware is ineligible.
What quality preset should I choose?
FSR quality presets trade internal rendering resolution against image clarity and output performance. ASUS’s general handheld guidance suggests starting with Quality or Balanced where a game offers those choices. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal recommendation: the best choice depends on the game’s native resolution, text readability, motion, and the performance target you are trying to hold.
Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene. A lower preset can make a demanding title look sharper in motion only if it keeps frame pacing stable, while a higher preset can preserve detail at the cost of more GPU work. Neither the preset name nor the presence of the FSR toggle promises a specific frame rate.
Does FSR 4.1 mean frame generation or a guaranteed FPS boost?
No. FSR Upscaling 4.1 is an upscaling feature, not the same thing as machine-learning frame generation. AMD describes the Ryzen Z2 handheld class as upscaling-only for Redstone. Do not read the FSR Upscaling tile as a frame-generation switch.
AMD lists separate requirements for its frame-generation upgrade path: an FSR 3.1.4-or-newer integration, Windows 11, and DirectX 12. Those requirements are distinct from the Ally’s upscaling procedure. Meeting them does not mean a game supports frame generation, and enabling FSR Upscaling does not add frame generation to a title that lacks the necessary integration.
AMD says its technology page covers more than 400 supported ML-powered FSR Upscaling titles. That is an ecosystem-wide figure, not a count of released Series X|S FSR 4.1 games or a handheld-only compatibility list. ASUS describes the efficient FSR 4.1 model used on the Ally X and X20 as less than half the size of the original INT8 model. Model size is not an FPS measurement. No controlled Ally-specific FSR 4.1 comparison establishes a guaranteed gain, so treat performance as dependent on the game, its settings, the selected preset, and the current driver.
Can I connect an Ally to a TV?
Yes, a compatible dock can provide an external-display connection, but it does not install or unlock FSR. ASUS names the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 for an external-display setup. The FSR requirements remain the same: the correct ASUS handheld update, the handheld-level toggle, and a supported game integration. A dock cannot turn a Series X|S into an FSR 4.1 device and cannot add the feature to a game.

What is the practical choice for each device?
Series X|S: Wait for an official console release, console activation instructions, and specific game support. Do not buy a console or reinstall a game on the assumption that FSR 4.1 is already available.

Base Ally: Check Armoury Crate SE first because ASUS’s availability statements conflict. Install only an update offered for the exact device.
X20: Treat ASUS’s mention as model-specific guidance, not proof of retail availability in your country. Confirm that the required update is delivered to your unit.
The Xbox-style interface shared by these handhelds does not make their Windows driver procedure a console procedure. The hardware, operating system, OEM update channel, and game’s integration all determine what you can enable.

Does the Xbox Ally need the generic AMD 26.10.1 driver for this?
No. AMD’s 26.10.1 release notes say its generic Adrenalin package does not support handheld gaming devices. The documented route is the applicable ASUS OEM GPU update delivered through Armoury Crate SE; see AMD’s 26.10.1 page.

Is FSR 4.1 out on Series S?
AMD’s announcement covers Series X|S together and still describes console support as coming soon. Do not assume Series S has a separate release or activation path.
Where is the FSR Upscaling tile on an Ally?
Open Command Center, press Y to customize its layout, add the FSR Upscaling tile, and turn it on. You can also use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition under Gaming > Graphics after installing the applicable ASUS GPU update.
