Yes, you may be able to get a refund when a game’s release date is delayed, but the delay does not create one universal refund right. Start with the seller shown on your receipt: Steam, PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store, Nintendo, or the retailer that took your payment. Each has different deadlines and conditions, and digital and physical orders are not interchangeable.
Before downloading, preloading, streaming, launching, or playing the game, check the seller’s rules. Those actions can affect eligibility, and after release some platforms impose short request windows or playtime limits.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
What should you do first?
Find the seller that charged you, then make the request through that seller. The game’s publisher or platform where you plan to play may not be the seller of record: a voucher code bought from a retailer, for example, is handled by the retailer that sold it. Epic likewise says third-party purchases are subject to the third party’s policy.
- Save the delay notice. Keep the publisher’s or seller’s email, announcement, or a screenshot of the updated order status. Make sure the screenshot shows the game name and revised date if possible.
- Gather the transaction details. Note the order number, purchase date, payment method, account email, and revised release date. Record whether you paid in full, saw only an authorization hold, or received a code.
- Check the receipt or payment record. Identify the storefront or retailer that accepted payment; contact that seller rather than a different platform. A bank statement, console account, or email receipt can resolve uncertainty.
- Preserve eligibility. If the policy makes non-use a condition, do not download, preload, stream, launch, or play the game while deciding. Check whether automatic downloads are enabled.
- Submit a clear request. Use the seller’s transaction-history or support flow and explain that you want to cancel or refund the preorder because its release date changed. Include the original and revised dates.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the case number, submitted form, and confirmation email. Monitor the original payment method or account balance, and do not assume an on-screen cancellation means the money has already returned.
Store policies are not the whole legal picture: local consumer law may provide additional rights. The rules below describe the platform policies covered here, not a guarantee that every buyer in every country has the same remedy.

A quick decision tree
Your next step depends mainly on the revised date, whether the game has been used, and who took payment.
- Still before the revised release date: Request cancellation immediately through the original seller. Steam expressly allows a pre-release preorder refund. PlayStation depends on payment timing and non-download status. Epic permits qualifying pre-release cancellation, and Nintendo directs customers to support.
- The revised date has passed, but you did not play: Use the seller’s post-release process at once. Steam uses two weeks from release and less than two hours played. Epic’s ordinary self-refundable framework generally uses 14 days and under two hours.
- You downloaded or preloaded: Do not assume the same result on every storefront. PlayStation states that the main product must not have been downloaded, streamed, or preloaded; other sellers publish different conditions.
- You bought a code or physical copy elsewhere: Contact the retailer or business that sold the code and accepted the payment. The platform where you would redeem the code may not be able to refund it.
- The delay is indefinite: Epic says an indefinite delay with no known release date triggers a full automated refund. On other platforms, request cancellation instead of assuming an automatic result.
- The seller says no: Ask for the reason in writing, compare it with the applicable preorder section, and escalate through the seller’s support channel. Check local consumer protections before considering any payment dispute.
How do the preorder refund rules compare?
The main differences are whether you can cancel before release, what happens after release, and whether downloading or playing affects eligibility. The PlayStation timing rules below are from its U.S. cancellation policy; for another region, check the applicable local policy.

How do you cancel a Steam preorder after a delay?
Steam’s preorder guidance says, “Per Steam’s standard refund policy, you may refund your pre-order any time prior to the release of the game.” If the revised release date has passed, Steam’s stated rule is to request a refund within two weeks of release and with less than two hours of playtime.
- Sign in to the Steam account that made the purchase.
- Open Steam Support and choose the purchase from the account’s purchase history.
- Select the refund option and explain that the preorder’s release date was delayed. Include the original and revised dates if the form allows.
- Submit the request promptly if the game has already released; the post-release window and playtime limit apply.
Before release, cancellation is the more straightforward route under Steam’s stated preorder rule. After release, do not assume the original launch date gives you a fresh deadline: Steam’s rule is measured from the game’s release. If you have played close to two hours, stop playing while the request is reviewed because additional playtime may affect the limit.
Can you cancel a PlayStation preorder after its release date changes?
Under PlayStation’s U.S. policy, eligibility depends on when payment was made relative to release and whether the main product has been downloaded or streamed. A preorder paid more than 14 days before release can be canceled before release; one paid 14 days or less before release can be canceled within 14 days of payment.
PlayStation’s refund-request guidance applies the same timing distinction when the release date has passed: for a purchase made 14 days or less before release, the request may still be made within 14 days of payment. For a preorder paid earlier, the guidance says to make the request before release. The main content must not have been downloaded or preloaded.

Check the console’s automatic-download setting before the release date. PlayStation warns that automatic downloads can occur when the setting is enabled, which could affect the non-download condition. A preload is not something to ignore simply because you did not launch the game. If the purchase was a voucher code from another retailer, request the remedy from the retailer that sold the code rather than PlayStation Store. These are U.S. policy details; regional terms may differ.
Does Epic automatically refund a delayed preorder?
Epic gives a delay-specific answer: a delay under 30 days brings notice of the new release date and an opportunity to cancel; a delay over 30 days triggers an automatic refund. Epic also says an indefinite delay with no known release date results in a full automated refund.
Epic’s wording distinguishes “less than 30 days” from “over 30 days.” It does not state an outcome for exactly 30 days, so ask Epic support rather than assuming that date falls into either category. Save the notice showing how the delay was calculated.
For an eligible purchase that has not been automatically refunded, open Epic account settings, go to Transactions, locate the game, select Request refund, choose a reason, and submit. Epic’s ordinary self-refundable-game rules generally allow a request within 14 days of release if playtime is under two hours. Some pre-purchases containing virtual currency or other consumables may not offer self-service refunds; contact Epic support if the option is missing and you believe the purchase qualifies.

Nintendo’s guidance says the full amount for a digital pre-purchase is not charged until seven days before release and directs customers who want to cancel to Nintendo support. The cited guidance does not set a general automatic-refund threshold for delays, so contact support promptly rather than assuming a delay cancels the order.
Provide the order details, payment information, and notice showing the revised date. Ask specifically whether the pre-purchase can be canceled and refunded, and whether any automatic download or account action affects your request. The seven-day payment timing describes when the full digital pre-purchase charge is taken; it is not a stated seven-day cancellation window.

What if you bought a boxed game or used another retailer?
Use the policy of the seller that accepted the order. Digital-store rules for Steam, PlayStation, Epic, or Nintendo do not automatically apply to a physical preorder or a purchase made through a separate retailer.
- Before shipment: Check the order page for a cancellation option and read the retailer’s current written policy. The cancellation deadline, authorization hold, release-date terms, and whether a card was actually charged vary by seller and location.
- After shipment: The seller may direct you to its return process instead of a preorder cancellation. Follow the return instructions and keep tracking information.
- After delivery: Preserve the packaging, accessories, and proof of purchase. Avoid opening the item until the seller confirms the available remedy, because a return policy may distinguish unopened and opened products.
- For a third-party code: Ask the business that sold the code. The platform that would redeem it may not be responsible for the transaction.
What if the release date has passed or you already downloaded the game?
Use the seller’s post-release rules immediately; a delay does not suspend every deadline. Steam’s stated post-release rule is two weeks from release and less than two hours played. Epic’s general rule for qualifying self-refundable games is 14 days and under two hours. PlayStation’s cited preorder guidance instead makes its timing depend on purchase date and requires that the main content not have been downloaded, streamed, or preloaded.

If the game was downloaded or preloaded, do not assume all platforms treat that action the way PlayStation does. The policies differ, so check the specific seller’s terms and submit a request rather than applying one storefront’s restriction to another. If you only opened a store page or viewed an announcement, describe that accurately; do not claim that the game was unused if it was launched or streamed.
How should you write the refund request?
Keep the message factual and concise. Identify the order, state that the advertised release date changed, and ask for cancellation or a refund under the seller’s preorder policy. A useful structure is:
“I am requesting cancellation and a refund for preorder [game title], order [number], purchased on [date]. The listed release date changed from [old date] to [new date]. The game has [not been downloaded, preloaded, streamed, launched, or played / been played for ___ hours]. Please confirm eligibility and return the payment to the original method.”
Attach the delay notice only through the seller’s approved support form. Do not send payment-card numbers or unrelated personal documents in a public forum. If support asks follow-up questions, answer them consistently with the account and order history.

Common mistakes that can cost time or eligibility
- Contacting the publisher instead of the seller: The publisher may announce the delay but cannot necessarily reverse a storefront transaction.
- Waiting for an automatic email: Epic describes automatic refunds for certain delays, but Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo, and retailers have different processes.
- Preloading while deciding: PlayStation expressly conditions its preorder remedy on the main product not being downloaded, streamed, or preloaded.
- Using the wrong release date: After release, Steam and Epic measure their ordinary windows from release, not from the date you first expected to play.
- Ignoring bundled consumables: Epic says some pre-purchases containing virtual currency or other consumables may not be refundable through self-service.
- Assuming a pending authorization is a refund: A retailer may place a hold before shipment and charge later. Check the order status and payment statement.
- Opening a shipped physical copy: Keep it sealed until the retailer explains whether cancellation or return is available.
What should you do if the refund request is denied?
Ask the seller to explain the denial in writing, then compare that reason with the preorder section of its policy. Request clarification if the seller appears to have treated a preorder as an ordinary completed purchase or used the wrong release date. If the explanation does not resolve the issue, escalate through that seller’s support channel and keep every case number.
Check whether consumer law where you live provides additional rights, especially if the seller changed a promised date, charged you without delivering, or failed to honor its stated cancellation terms. The existence of a platform policy does not answer the legal question in every country.
Do not treat a payment dispute as the first step for a policy disagreement. Reserve a card or payment-provider dispute for a genuine unresolved billing problem, and understand that escalating a dispute can affect the account connected to the purchase. A chargeback does not replace the seller’s normal refund process.
How long will the money take to arrive?
The platform policies covered here do not establish one universal processing-time promise. A seller may first mark the order canceled, then send the funds to the original payment method or restore an account balance. Check the refund confirmation or support case for the status of your specific transaction. If the seller confirms a refund but the account or statement does not update, reply in the same case with the confirmation number rather than filing duplicate requests.

What if Epic delays a game by exactly 30 days?
Epic’s stated delay rule distinguishes a delay of less than 30 days from one exceeding 30 days, and does not specify the outcome for exactly 30 days. Ask Epic support to confirm how it will handle that case rather than assuming either rule applies.

Does a delayed release automatically mean the seller broke the law?
Not necessarily. A platform’s cancellation policy and your local consumer protections are separate questions; the answer depends on the applicable law and the terms of the transaction.
Who refunds a preorder bought with a voucher code?
Contact the retailer or other business that sold the code and accepted your payment. PlayStation says a voucher bought from another retailer should be handled by that retailer, and Epic says third-party purchases follow the third party’s policy.
Can I get a Steam refund after the revised release date?
Steam says a preorder may be refunded before release. After release, the published rule is a request within two weeks of release with less than two hours of playtime, so submit the request promptly.
Does preloading always cancel my refund rights?
No universal rule applies. PlayStation requires that the main product not have been downloaded, streamed, or preloaded, while other sellers use different conditions. Check the seller that charged you.
What happens to a physical preorder that has already shipped?
The retailer may require its return process instead of preorder cancellation. Keep packaging and accessories intact, avoid opening the item until the seller confirms the remedy, and follow its written instructions.
Does Nintendo automatically refund every delayed digital preorder?
Nintendo’s cited guidance says the full amount is charged seven days before release and directs customers seeking cancellation to support. It does not establish a general delay-specific automatic-refund rule, so contact Nintendo promptly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I request both a cancellation and a refund?
Yes. State clearly that you want the preorder canceled because the release date changed and that any payment already taken should be returned to the original method. The seller will determine which remedy its policy permits.
The Bottom Line
A delay alone does not guarantee a refund. Identify the seller that charged you, preserve non-use where required, and submit a documented request as soon as the date changes. Steam, PlayStation, Epic, Nintendo, and physical retailers use different deadlines and conditions; after release, playtime, download status, payment timing, or a return window may decide the result.
