If Settings > Gaming > Game Mode is missing in Windows 10, the usual cause is that the PC is running a build released before the Windows 10 Creators Update. Game Mode was introduced in that 2017 release. On a supported installation, you can enable the global switch in Settings or start a game, press Win+G, open Game Bar Settings, and enable Game Mode for that title. Windows remembers the per-game choice. If the page still does not appear on a supported build, treat the registry value as a diagnostic clue rather than a guaranteed repair, check whether the device is managed, and consider Windows 10’s end-of-support status.
Why is Game Mode missing in Windows 10?
Game Mode is a built-in Windows 10 feature, not a separate application, driver, accessory, or download. Microsoft introduced it with the Windows 10 Creators Update in 2017. A computer installed from older media and never upgraded will not have the Game Mode page because the operating system predates the feature.

On a supported build, Microsoft documents the path as Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. The Gaming area was designed to bring together Game bar, Game DVR, Game Mode, and broadcasting controls. If the Gaming category exists but Game Mode does not, the build, edition policy, or device management configuration needs to be checked before changing system files.
There is no published Microsoft benchmark that guarantees a particular frame-rate increase. Microsoft describes Game Mode as dedicating more system resources to a game and producing more sustainable framerates on average, but the result depends on the game, hardware, background workload, and Windows version.

How do I check whether my Windows 10 build supports Game Mode?
Use the built-in version dialog before troubleshooting Settings. This establishes whether the missing page is expected on an old installation or abnormal on a current one.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Record the Windows edition, version, and OS build shown in the About Windows window.
- Compare the installation date or version with the Windows 10 Creators Update. Any installation from before that 2017 release predates Game Mode.
If the computer is on a later Windows 10 release, close the dialog and check the Gaming settings. A missing page on a supported build is a configuration or policy issue rather than evidence that Game Mode was removed from Windows 10 generally.

Where is the normal Game Mode switch?
On a supported Windows 10 installation, open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and turn on the Game Mode toggle. Microsoft’s Windows Insider launch guidance uses that exact path.
The switch is global: it tells Windows that Game Mode may be used when a compatible game is running. It does not install Game Bar, change a game’s graphics preset, or replace a graphics-card driver. After enabling it, launch a game and verify the per-title setting if you want Windows to remember the choice for that particular executable.
How do I enable Game Mode for one game with Win+G?
Game Bar provides a second route and stores the decision for the title you are currently running.

- Start the game and wait until its window is active.
- Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Select the Settings button in the Game Bar overlay.
- Find the Game Mode option and enable it.
- Close the overlay and continue playing. Windows saves that per-title choice for future use.
This route is useful when you want to confirm that Game Mode is available without navigating through the main Settings app. It also distinguishes a missing global page from a title-specific configuration: if the overlay exposes the option and remembers it, the feature itself is present even if the Settings page is difficult to find.

Work from the least invasive checks to the most consequential. Do not begin by importing registry files or installing “optimizer” utilities; neither is required for the documented workflow.
Install the latest updates offered for your Windows 10 release
Use Windows Update and restart when requested, then run winver again. A machine that has the Creators Update or a later release should have the Gaming controls described by Microsoft, although an organization can restrict or hide settings.
Check both Settings and Game Bar
Open Settings > Gaming and look for Game Mode. Then launch a game and press Win+G. If Game Mode can be enabled from Game Bar and the choice persists, the missing page may be a Settings presentation or policy problem rather than a missing feature.
Consider device-management policy
Work, school, and shared PCs may be controlled by an administrator. A policy can prevent users from changing gaming or recording features even when the underlying Windows components are installed. On a managed device, ask the administrator or Microsoft support channel to confirm the policy before making system-level changes.

Check for an edition or servicing exception
Long-term servicing editions do not always follow the same release and support schedule as mainstream Windows 10 editions. Confirm the edition shown by winver and use its servicing documentation rather than assuming that a consumer installation and an LTSC or LTSB installation behave identically.
What does the AutoGameModeEnabled registry value tell me?
Microsoft Learn associates the Game Mode toggle with this per-user registry value:
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftGameBarAutoGameModeEnabled
That association is useful for diagnosis: it indicates where Windows records the user-level setting. The documentation does not promise that creating the value, changing its data, or importing a registry file will recreate a missing Game Mode page. A registry edit can also affect the wrong user profile or conflict with an administrator’s policy.
- Back up the registry before any change.
- Do not use a registry cleaner or an unverified “gaming tweak” package to force the setting.
- On a managed PC, obtain administrator approval first.
- Prefer Windows Update, the documented Settings path, and Game Bar before editing the registry.
If you need to investigate the value, open Registry Editor only after recording the exact key path and the account under which you are signed in. If the page remains absent, Microsoft support or the device administrator is a safer repair route than guessing at registry data.
Does OBS change whether Game Mode should be enabled?
Recording software compatibility depends on the Windows 10 release. OBS documented problems with Game Mode on older Windows 10 versions, while its guidance for Windows 10 version 1809 and newer with current updates is generally to leave Game Mode enabled.

| Windows 10 condition | OBS-oriented guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Older than version 1809 | Game Mode could cause problems in older releases. | Test with Game Mode disabled if recording or streaming becomes unstable; the switch is available through Settings when the build supports it. |
| Version 1809 or newer, fully updated | OBS recommends generally leaving Game Mode enabled. | Keep it enabled unless a reproducible capture problem points to a compatibility conflict. |
This is a software-compatibility qualification, not a recommendation to buy hardware. If recording is your priority, reproduce the issue with the same game, capture source, and Windows build before changing several settings at once.
Will Game Mode increase FPS?
It can make resource scheduling more consistent, but no fixed performance percentage can be promised. Microsoft’s description is qualitative: Game Mode dedicates more system resources to the game and aims for more sustainable framerates on average. The cited launch material does not publish a universal percentage, laboratory benchmark, or minimum frame-rate gain.
That means a missing Game Mode page should not be treated as the explanation for every stutter or low-FPS problem. CPU and GPU limits, thermal throttling, game settings, drivers, background applications, and capture software can all matter independently. Enable the feature through the supported path, then evaluate the game with a repeatable scene and the same graphics settings if you want to judge its effect.
Should I repair Windows 10 or move to Windows 11?
In 2026, the support lifecycle is part of the decision. Microsoft’s Windows 10 release-health documentation states that standard Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft lists checking Windows 11 eligibility, purchasing a new Windows 11 PC, or using Extended Security Updates (ESU) as separate options; LTSC and LTSB editions follow different policies.
| Choice | Version and eligibility question | Managed-device question | Gaming and recording consideration | Security-support context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repair the existing Windows 10 installation | Confirm that the build is at least the Creators Update and update it as far as the edition allows. | Ask the organization whether a policy hides Gaming settings. | Check the OBS guidance for the installed version, especially the version 1809 boundary. | Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; an edition-specific policy may differ. |
| Move to Windows 11 | Run Microsoft’s Windows 11 eligibility check for the current device, or evaluate a new compatible PC. | Coordinate the upgrade with the organization’s administrator. | Re-test Game Bar, Game Mode, and recording software after migration. | Provides a supported Windows path when the hardware and edition qualify. |
| Use Extended Security Updates | Confirm that the installation and region qualify for ESU. | Have the administrator handle enrollment and policy. | Keep the existing Game Mode and recording workflow while security coverage is extended. | ESU is a lifecycle option, not a way to add a missing Game Mode page. |
A repair can restore the documented control on a sufficiently new Windows 10 build, but it does not reverse the end of standard support. If the computer is eligible for Windows 11, compare that path with the cost and disruption of keeping an unsupported installation; the right choice depends on hardware, software, management, and security requirements.

What is the fastest diagnostic checklist?
- Run
winverand record the version, build, and edition. - Confirm that the installation is from the Windows 10 Creators Update era or later.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode.
- With a game running, press Win+G, open Game Bar Settings, and check the title-specific option.
- Remember that Game Bar saves the per-title choice for future launches.
- If the page is still absent, check Windows Update, managed-device policy, and edition servicing rules.
- Use
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftGameBarAutoGameModeEnabledonly as a diagnostic reference, not as a guaranteed repair. - If you record with OBS, apply the version-specific guidance: older releases may require disabling Game Mode, while version 1809 and newer with current updates should generally leave it enabled.
- Factor in Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 end-of-support date when deciding whether to keep repairing the installation.
What should you expect after fixing the setting?
After the switch is enabled, Windows does not display a special “Game Mode active” performance score. The practical confirmation is that the global toggle is on, Game Bar exposes the per-title option, and the title-specific choice remains enabled when you launch the same game again. If those checks pass, the feature is configured; any remaining performance issue needs separate graphics, game, driver, or recording-software troubleshooting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Game Mode separately if Windows 10 does not show it?
No. Game Mode is part of Windows 10 and was introduced in the Creators Update; it is not a standalone download or accessory. Updating to a supported build is the appropriate way to obtain the built-in control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs there an official FPS percentage that Game Mode guarantees?
No. Microsoft describes more sustainable framerates on average but does not publish a universal percentage or benchmark for the feature. Results vary with the game, hardware, background workload, and Windows version.
Does Windows 10 end of support remove Game Mode from an existing PC?
End of support does not itself uninstall the feature. It means standard security servicing ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 eligibility or Extended Security Updates should be considered separately from the Game Mode setting.
Should I change AutoGameModeEnabled on a work computer?
Treat that registry value as diagnostic information, not a guaranteed fix. On a managed computer, changing it without administrator approval can conflict with policy or affect only your user profile.
