A game-studio cyberattack can disrupt services, expose development material, put some player records at risk, or interfere with the tools used to build updates—but those outcomes are not interchangeable. The only reliable way to judge a particular incident is to follow what the publisher has confirmed about the systems involved and the information affected. A studio breach alone does not prove that player passwords were stolen, local saves were erased, or the next patch will be late.

What can a game-studio cyberattack affect?

It depends on which systems an attacker reached. A studio may rely on separate systems for development, customer support, online services, account records, and game updates. An intrusion into one does not automatically give an attacker access to all the others.

For a player, the possible effects fall into a few different categories:

  • Development material: files such as source code, internal documents, or footage may be accessed or taken. That is serious for the studio, but it does not by itself establish that player accounts or saves were exposed.
  • Support operations: a compromised support tool or vendor account can be used to contact customers, potentially with malicious links. That is different from proof that a player database was copied.
  • Live services and online records: an attack may disrupt games or services, or affect information held on publisher systems, such as online progression and inventory.
  • Build and release systems: disruption to tools used to prepare updates can affect a studio’s patch schedule even if the incident is not reported as a player-data breach.
  • Local save files: these are stored on a player’s device or in a platform’s cloud-save system. They are distinct from online progress stored by a game publisher.

These categories can overlap, but a notice about one is not evidence of another. A service outage does not prove a data leak; stolen development footage does not prove passwords were taken; and an update delay does not mean a player’s save was deleted.

Were player accounts hacked?

Only an incident-specific notice can answer that. Look for what the publisher says was accessed, whether personal information was exposed, and how certain that conclusion is. “No evidence at this time” is a qualified finding about that investigation—not a promise that every account in every incident is safe.

Ubisoft’s March 2022 notice said some games, systems, and services had been temporarily disrupted and that the company had no evidence at that time that player personal information had been accessed or exposed. In a separate January 2026 update, the Rainbow Six Siege team said there was no indication at that stage that player personal data or source code had been compromised in the cyberattack it discussed. Those statements describe different incidents and preserve the uncertainty that existed when each notice was issued. Ubisoft’s March 2022 notice

Take-Two’s descriptions of two 2022 incidents illustrate why the details matter. In one, Rockstar development material was downloaded. Separately, credentials for a vendor platform supporting 2K customers were misused, allowing a malicious link to be sent to certain players. Those facts do not establish that all Rockstar or 2K account passwords were stolen, or that the two incidents were a single leak of every player’s credentials.

If a malicious message is reported, assess the message itself rather than assuming your account has already been taken over. Do not follow an emailed login link to “secure” an account. Navigate to the publisher’s official site or app yourself, then check for unfamiliar account changes and use the service’s support channel if something looks wrong.

Are my game saves safe?

A save can be a local file, a platform cloud save, or publisher-held online progression. The answer depends on where the game stores the particular data—and whether the incident notice says that system was affected.

Local saves and cloud copies

A conventional local save lives on a console or computer. Some games or platforms also synchronize saves to cloud storage. If a save is eligible and a separate copy exists, it may be possible to restore it after accidental loss or device failure. That is a different recovery problem from an attack on a game studio’s network.

Ubisoft’s documented PC restore process begins with a backup copy of the game’s save folder. For games that support cloud saving, its instructions describe choosing the restored local save at the next launch. The exact folder and synchronization behavior depend on the game, so check its instructions before copying or replacing files. An external SSD can hold a separate copy, but it cannot reconstruct a file that was never backed up.

For PS5, Sony describes saving console data—including saved data—as part of a PS5 console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB device. The menu path is Settings → System → System Software → Back Up and Restore → Back Up Your PS5. This is a console-backup procedure, not a promise that every game’s save can be exported individually. Sony warns that restoring a backup erases current data on the console; its documented conditions also link the backup to the PlayStation account. A USB extended-storage drive is formatted differently and cannot be used as the backup device for this procedure. Sony’s PS5 backup instructions

Online progression and inventory

Some game progress is held by the publisher rather than in a file a player can copy. Rainbow Six Siege’s cross-progression, for example, is saved to the Ubisoft account rather than the platform account. Ubisoft’s January 30, 2026 update said, “Following the recent cyberattack, player inventories were restored.” It also said the Marketplace was temporarily closed while protections were improved. The update establishes a restoration announcement at that time; it does not establish that the Marketplace remains closed now or that local saves were involved. A USB drive cannot rebuild publisher-held inventory, currency, rank, or purchases. If online items or progression appear to be missing, take screenshots, keep relevant purchase or transaction records, and use the game’s official support process. Recovery depends on the operator’s records and actions; a local save restore is not a substitute for that process.

Will a cyberattack delay the next patch?

It might if the incident affects tools used to build or release updates, but an attack does not automatically mean a patch will be delayed. Treat a schedule change as confirmed only when the developer connects the incident to its release plans.

In January 2023, Riot Games said its build environment had been disrupted and, as quoted by BleepingComputer, “We expect this to impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games.” Riot also expressed confidence that player personal information had not been compromised. This is an example of a reported connection between a development-system disruption and expected patch effects—not evidence that every game update was delayed, or that an unrelated studio’s release schedule will change. BleepingComputer’s report on Riot’s statement

Check the affected game’s official status page, patch notes, or publisher notice for a specific date. If a developer says only that an investigation is underway, it is not possible to infer the timing of the next update from that statement alone.

What do past incidents show—and what don’t they prove?

Published incidents show how different the consequences can be. They are useful comparisons, not a template for predicting the scope or recovery time of a new attack.

Incident What was reported What it does not establish
Ubisoft, March 2022 Some games, systems, and services were temporarily disrupted; Ubisoft said it had no evidence at that time that player personal information had been exposed. That another publisher’s outage had the same cause or data scope.
Take-Two, 2022 Rockstar development footage was downloaded in one incident; separately, misuse of credentials for a 2K support-vendor platform enabled a malicious link to be sent to certain players. That all accounts or passwords at either company were stolen.
Riot Games, January 2023 A statement quoted by BleepingComputer connected a disrupted build environment to expected effects on patch cadence. That a particular later patch, or every game’s updates, were delayed.
CD PROJEKT, 2021 In February, employee-related files were encrypted and recovered from backups. In June, the company said internally obtained data appeared to be circulating, while the exact contents were unconfirmed. That player saves or personal details were included in those employee files.
Ubisoft’s Siege update, January 2026 The team said affected player inventories had been restored and that the Marketplace was temporarily closed while protections were improved. That the Marketplace remains closed on a later date, or that local save files were affected.

There is no verified cross-industry percentage here for how many players are affected, no typical restoration time, and no established probability that an attack will erase saves. A number from one incident should not be treated as an industry rate. For example, BleepingComputer reported approximately 17,000 affected accounts in its 2023 coverage of an attack on the game Ethyrial: Echoes of Yore, after ransomware encrypted a game server and a local backup drive. That is a case-specific figure reported by the publication, not a general measure of risk. BleepingComputer’s report on the Ethyrial incident

What should I do after a game-studio cyberattack?

Start with the official notice and act on the risk it actually identifies. These steps can help protect your account and preserve eligible local data, but they cannot repair a publisher’s systems.

  1. Find the official incident update. Use the publisher’s website, game launcher, or verified status channel rather than a link in an unsolicited email or message. Note which game, service, or system the update names, and whether the publisher reports confirmed exposure, a provisional finding, or an unresolved investigation.
  2. Check the account connected to the affected game. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, profile or contact-detail changes, purchases, or other activity. If the service offers sign-in history or security alerts, review them through the official account settings.
  3. Protect your login. Use a unique password for the publisher account and enable two-step verification if the service offers it. Rockstar’s account-security guidance recommends protective account practices; use the relevant publisher’s own instructions for its available settings. Rockstar Games account security guidance
  4. Treat unexpected support messages cautiously. Do not enter credentials through a message link. Open the publisher’s official site or app independently and contact support from there if an alert or account change needs investigation.
  5. Preserve eligible local saves separately. On PC, confirm the game’s save location and cloud behavior before making a copy. On PS5, follow Sony’s console-backup instructions and understand the restore consequences before relying on that backup.
  6. Use the right recovery route. Contact the game’s official support team for missing online inventory or progression. For a local file, follow the game or platform’s save-recovery instructions. Do not assume one route can restore data held by the other.

Can a studio attack erase a save because of a game bug?

Not every report of missing game data is evidence of an attack. Insomniac’s support article about missing saves describes a game bug addressed in update 1.002.000; it does not identify the studio’s cybersecurity incident as the cause. The article recommends checking an in-game backup save and, for eligible subscribers, PlayStation Plus cloud saves, and says lost data cannot always be recovered. Keep those causes separate when diagnosing a missing save. Insomniac Games Support’s missing-save guidance

The most useful questions are therefore specific: Which system was accessed? What does the operator say was exposed or disrupted? Is the progress stored locally or online? Has the publisher announced a recovery? Until those answers are available, neither a studio breach nor a temporary outage is enough to conclude that a particular player’s account or save was lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change my password after a game publisher reports an attack?

If the publisher confirms that account credentials were exposed, follow its account-recovery instructions promptly. If there is no such confirmation, changing a reused password is a sensible precaution because reuse can expose accounts beyond the affected game; never use a password from an alert email’s linked page.

Can customer support restore a missing online inventory?

The publisher may be able to verify account history or purchases, but restoration depends on the game’s records and support policy. Include account identifiers and transaction evidence in an official support request, and avoid posting those details publicly.

What if I clicked a suspicious link sent after an incident?

If you entered your password, go directly to the official account site, change that password, and secure any other accounts where you reused it. If you also shared a verification code or payment information, contact the relevant service or financial institution through its official channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an attack on a game studio mean my console has malware?

A report that a publisher or its online service was attacked does not by itself establish that player consoles were infected. Follow platform security guidance if you see unusual behavior on the device, but do not install tools offered through unsolicited messages claiming to clean it.
