For a 2D PC game you plan to sell, choose by workflow, release date, licensing terms, and target operating systems—not by an unsupported claim that one engine is universally best. GameMaker suits developers who want its GML Code or Visual workflow and room-based tools; Godot combines a dedicated 2D renderer and physics engine with MIT-licensed commercial use; Unity has documented 2D tools and desktop publishing under Personal, subject to eligibility rules. The key date distinction: GameMaker’s planned free commercial distribution for its next-generation runtime starts January 1, 2027; it does not change the current terms for games shipping on the existing runtime.

| Godot | Developers who want a dedicated 2D engine and MIT licensing for commercial projects | Dedicated 2D renderer and physics engine; GDScript, C#, and C++ support | MIT-licensed; include the engine copyright and license notice when distributing the engine binary | Documented exports: Windows, macOS, Linux | Nov 2026 |
| Unity | Developers who need its 2D feature set, packages, or asset ecosystem and meet Personal eligibility | Sprite, tile-based and freeform world, animation, and 2D physics tools | Personal eligibility threshold: $200,000 in revenue or funding over the applicable last 12 months; Pro: $2,310 per seat yearly prepaid or $210 monthly (US list figures) | Personal includes desktop publishing | Nov 2026 |
Prices and plan details above reflect the cited vendors’ published terms as of November 2026; GameMaker says regional pricing may differ, and Unity warns that local taxes, currency, and rounding can affect checkout totals. Unity Pro figures are from Unity’s 2025 announcement of 2026 pricing. The engines’ feature lists describe available workflows, not a measured comparison of development speed, runtime performance, stability, or sales.

What is the practical difference between GameMaker, Godot, and Unity for 2D?
The main difference is how each engine organizes creation and what commercial conditions apply to your release. All three document substantial 2D workflows; the right fit depends on which tools match your game and how much licensing or platform uncertainty you can accept.
GameMaker: a focused GML and room-based workflow
GameMaker centers its documented workflow on GML Code or GML Visual, with rooms, sprites, tilesets, sequences, and debugging tools. That combination may appeal if your project maps naturally to those concepts and you want a 2D-oriented authoring environment. GameMaker also mentions asset bundles, but an available bundle is not a guarantee that a particular asset meets your needs or grants the rights you need for commercial distribution.

Its commercial terms require special attention to the runtime your game will ship with. The existing runtime and the next-generation GameMaker Runtime (GMRT) have different dates and terms; the January 2027 announcement should not be treated as a current license for a release using the existing runtime.
Godot: dedicated 2D tools with MIT licensing
Godot documents a dedicated 2D renderer and physics engine, along with tilemaps, particles, and animation. Its FAQ recommends GDScript for newcomers, while the engine also documents C# and C++ support. That recommendation is guidance from Godot, not evidence that every developer will learn or ship faster with GDScript.
Godot’s MIT license permits commercial projects. You may license your own game content separately; when distributing the engine binary, include the engine’s copyright and license notice. This makes the engine’s commercial-use terms straightforward, but it does not eliminate the need to check the licenses for third-party assets, plugins, or other components you add.
Unity: a broad 2D toolkit with plan eligibility to track
Unity documents tools for sprites, tile-based and freeform worlds, frame-by-frame and bone-based animation, 2D physics, and 2D packages. It also presents the Asset Store as a source of ready-made assets and tools. The existence of an asset ecosystem can help you look for components, but it does not establish the quality, compatibility, or commercial license of an individual item.
Unity Personal includes desktop publishing, but use depends on Unity’s eligibility rules. If the project or business no longer qualifies, the relevant cost may become a recurring per-seat Pro subscription rather than a one-time engine license. Unity canceled its proposed Runtime Fee; it is not a current per-install charge.
Can I sell a game made with Godot for free?
Yes. Godot’s MIT license permits commercial use without an engine royalty or paid commercial license. When distributing the engine binary, include Godot’s copyright and license notice; the MIT terms do not require you to license your own game content under the same terms.

Keep the boundary clear: Godot’s engine license governs Godot, not every component you might include. Review the terms for third-party art, audio, fonts, plugins, and libraries separately, especially if you modify or redistribute them. A project can use Godot commercially while still having obligations attached to some of its other components.
Godot documents desktop exports for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Before committing to a release schedule, confirm the export path and build requirements for the specific operating systems you intend to support. A listed export target does not establish that a particular project, plugin, or release configuration will work without additional setup.
Do I need GameMaker Professional to sell a PC game?
For a commercial release on GameMaker’s existing runtime, its FAQ, last updated October 22, 2026, states that a $99.99 one-time commercial license is required. GameMaker notes that regional pricing may differ. The answer changes for the next-generation GMRT, so identify the runtime your shipped game will use before relying on a price or permission.
Existing runtime: current commercial-release terms
GameMaker’s October 2026 FAQ says selling games with the existing runtime requires the one-time commercial license. Apply that statement to the existing runtime; do not read it as the price for every future version, and do not assume a future runtime announcement rewrites the terms for a current build.

In an announcement dated October 23, 2026, GameMaker said GMRT becomes free for commercial distribution on January 1, 2027. That is a future policy start date relative to November 2026. If you are preparing a game for sale before then, the announcement alone does not establish permission to distribute a commercial game on GMRT before its effective date. Check the applicable terms for your runtime and release date.
For a project close to the date boundary, keep a written record of the runtime version and license terms that apply to the build you plan to ship. The significant question is not simply “Which GameMaker version did I install?” but “Which runtime will this commercial release distribute, and what terms apply on its release date?”

Console plans are a separate licensing decision
A desktop commercial license does not settle console access. GameMaker says Enterprise and approved-developer status remain necessary for console work regardless of runtime. Treat a possible console port as a separate licensing and access requirement, not as an automatic extension of a PC release license.
Can I use Unity Personal for a paid PC game?
Unity Personal includes desktop publishing and can be used by eligible commercial developers below Unity’s applicable $200,000 revenue-or-funding threshold over the last 12 months. The threshold is not a blanket statement that every studio is assessed in the same way: check Unity’s actual individual or business eligibility wording for your circumstances.

Unity’s published 2026 US-dollar Pro list price is $2,310 per seat per year when prepaid, or $210 per seat per month, based on its 2025 pricing announcement. Unity cautions that taxes, currency, and rounding may change checkout totals by region. Because Pro is priced per seat, a studio should account for the number of seats and the length of time it needs them rather than treating the figure as a single project fee.
Do not budget for the canceled Runtime Fee as if it were an active charge. Unity’s official pricing update says: “No new or existing Unity games have been, or will be, subject to the Runtime Fee.” This corrects older comparisons that still describe a per-install fee. It does not remove the need to monitor plan eligibility and subscription pricing.
Questions to settle before choosing Unity
- Does the person or business publishing the project meet Unity’s current Personal eligibility rules?
- Would a change in revenue, funding, or eligibility require a move to another plan?
- How many seats would require Pro, and for how long?
- Do the specific 2D tools or packages you need exist in the documented Unity workflow, and do their terms fit your release?
Which engine fits a particular 2D PC project?
Choose by mapping the work your game actually requires to each engine’s documented tools, then make the license and target-platform checks part of that decision. A feature checklist is a better starting point than assuming one engine is inherently faster or easier for every team.
Choose GameMaker if its workflow fits and the runtime terms fit your date
GameMaker is a reasonable candidate when GML Code or Visual, rooms, sprites, tilesets, sequences, and its debugging workflow align with how you want to build. For a release using the existing runtime, include the stated commercial license in your budget. If the release depends on GMRT’s planned free-commercial terms, plan around the January 1, 2027 effective date and verify that the actual shipping runtime and applicable terms match your plan.

For a PC-only release, its documented GMS2 Desktop commercial-license targets are Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu. If a different Linux distribution or another platform matters, do not infer support from the named targets; verify the specific export and your project’s requirements.
Choose Godot if its license and 2D systems match your priorities
Godot is a strong fit to investigate when commercial MIT terms, a dedicated 2D renderer and physics engine, or documented exports for Windows, macOS, and Linux matter. Consider whether GDScript, C#, or C++ matches your team’s language needs, and note Godot’s recommendation of GDScript for newcomers as a starting point rather than a universal learning-curve verdict.
List the project’s required tile, animation, particle, physics, and integration features. Compare that list against what the project needs rather than treating a broad feature inventory as proof that every feature behaves identically across engines.
Choose Unity if its tools or ecosystem justify its plan obligations
Unity may suit a project that benefits from its documented sprite, tile-based and freeform world, animation, physics, and package workflows, or from searching its Asset Store for tools and assets. Confirm the license for each asset individually. Make Personal eligibility and possible per-seat Pro costs part of the project’s commercial plan, especially if the team or funding situation may change.

The cited engine documentation and policy pages do not establish cross-engine differences in runtime speed, build size, stability, productivity, or game sales. Those outcomes depend on the particular project, implementation, content, and release configuration. If one of them is decisive, define the project-specific requirement and evaluate it with a representative prototype before locking in an engine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare desktop exports and future console plans?
Desktop targets are not interchangeable, and console distribution adds a separate access hurdle. Match each engine’s documented target list to the operating systems you intend to release on, then verify the build prerequisites for your own project.

If consoles are a later goal, ask about platform-holder approval and engine access before treating a PC prototype as portable. GameMaker says console development still requires Enterprise and approved-developer status regardless of runtime. Unity describes Pro or a qualifying platform-holder key, plus platform-holder approval. These conditions are distinct from desktop publishing rights and do not guarantee approval.
What should you verify before committing to an engine?
Turn the choice into a short project audit. It exposes the assumptions most likely to cause a late licensing, workflow, or export surprise.

- Name the actual runtime or plan. For GameMaker, distinguish the existing runtime from GMRT and compare the release date with GMRT’s stated January 1, 2027 commercial start. For Unity, confirm the applicable Personal eligibility or budget for Pro. For Godot, plan to include its engine notice with the distributed binary.
- List required 2D production tasks. Include sprite import and editing, tile worlds, animation style, physics, particles, debugging, and any packages or integrations the game depends on. Check the documented tools against this list.
- Audit all third-party components. Identify assets, plugins, fonts, libraries, and tools, and review their individual license and distribution terms. An engine’s commercial permission does not automatically clear the other components.
- Build a representative prototype. Use a small slice that includes the game’s riskiest 2D requirements and target exports. Evaluate your own needs for performance, build size, stability, and compatibility; the published feature lists do not answer those project-specific questions.
- Recheck terms before release. Pricing and eligibility can change, and the GameMaker date boundary makes the runtime and release date material. Use the then-current official terms for the engine and plan you will actually ship.
How should a small team make the final call?
Use a decision order that eliminates incompatible choices before debating preferences. First remove any engine whose commercial terms, release timing, or required target platforms do not fit. Then compare the remaining workflows against the game’s concrete 2D production needs, and finally prototype any requirement that the published materials cannot settle.
- Prioritize the simplest commercial licensing path: Godot’s MIT commercial permission is clear, with the engine notice requirement. GameMaker and Unity each require attention to a specific date, license, or eligibility condition.
- Prioritize a defined authoring style: evaluate GameMaker’s GML and rooms, Godot’s 2D-specific systems and language choices, or Unity’s varied 2D tools against your actual production approach.
- Prioritize asset discovery: Unity’s Asset Store and GameMaker’s asset bundles provide avenues to find tools or content, but neither availability nor inclusion settles asset quality, suitability, or rights.
- Prioritize a future console release: validate access and licensing early. Console approval conditions can alter the practical choice even when all three remain candidates for the PC version.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner on productivity, performance, market share, or revenue. The useful verdict is conditional: select the engine whose documented workflow and commercial terms fit your specific 2D game, team, and release plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my choice of game engine determine whether Steam will accept my game?
No engine license by itself establishes a storefront’s publishing or review requirements. Check the storefront’s current rules separately, including any requirements for your release materials, build, or account.
Will choosing an engine make my 2D game more likely to sell?
The cited engine materials do not establish that any of these engines produces higher sales. Treat engine choice as a production and licensing decision, not a sales forecast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I switch engines if my project grows beyond its original 2D scope?
Not automatically. First identify the specific capability or platform requirement that the current engine cannot meet, then compare the cost and schedule of switching with the cost of adapting the existing project.
